I've been meaning to send this for a few days now, so of course I pull it together as soon as our esteemed list Mom goes on vacation. It's a talent, I know. I apologize in advance if this is too large for some of your inboxes, I wasn't sure how much was too much, so I just left it whole. *g* TITLE: Walking Wounded 1/1 AUTHOR: Amethyst Maiden EMAIL: amethystmaiden@hotmail.com TV SERIES: The Tomorrow People, New Series RATING: I’m thinking PGish SUMMARY: Kevin muses. SPOILERS: Minor ones for Origin Story and Culex, simply because we know the good guys win. Let’s face it, if you haven’t seen them by now, you’re not going to. DISCLAIMER: The Tomorrow People and their universe belong to Tetra/Thames Television and their creator Roger Damon Price. I’m just responsible for the excess baggage. Honestly though, this is all in fun, and I am not making any money. Dammit. DISTRIBUTION STATEMENT: Again, if you want it, party on, just email me so I can send you the copy with the italics that I love so well. (Which are unhappily simulated here with those little * star thigies.) AUTHOR’S NOTE: Look! I’m doing things in the order I said I would! I’ve had this on my hands for a while now, and I think it’s been tweaked as much as it’ll stand. I was a little frustrated with this fic, because it seems a bit muddled to me, but maybe that’s just because I was muddled while I was working on it. You be the judge. Also, I have to say that parts of this were born of my continuing issues with Ami. Yes I admit it, she was never my favorite Tomorrow Person. Before you lynch me, however, I want you to know that I am working on my Ami issues, hence her appearance here. Just keep in mind that a lot of what Kevin says about her is a siphoned version of my thoughts on the subject. The whole time zone thing was garnered from my roommate’s description of the time difference between here (Boston) and home (the Philippines) which is twelve or thirteen hours, depending on daylight savings time. England is about five hours ahead of us, so I figured the time difference for a random island in the south pacific would be somewhere around eight hours. Cheers to creative math. Or something. THANK YOUS: To Ib, again, for Betaing, and otherwise putting up with my over-analyzation of, well, everything. To Nicole for the not-nagging, which worked surprisingly well as a motivational tool, and to Anne for the actual nagging. I’m moving on to Out of Darkness, I swear. (And I haven’t forgotten you Anne, I’m just practicing my sloth with my hideously long reply to your last Email.) Ehem… don’t hurt me. ^_^ AND FEEDBACK: Aw, c'mon, you know you wanna... :::smiles pitifully::: WALKING WOUNDED If we deny love that is given to us, if we refuse to give love because we fear pain or loss, then our lives will be empty, our loss greater. -Anonymous Kevin sighed and dipped his toes into the water, closing his eyes as a cool wind blew mist against his face. He didn’t want to see his surroundings, this was a sensory experience, beside which he had the place more than memorized enough to imagine what it looked like. Rocks the color of red clay rose around him, worn with age and slicked green with moss. They culminated in a peak nearly ten meters up, water spilling from their heights to a clear blue pool beneath. Light undulated on the forest floor around him, filtering through the canopy in intricate patterns, a living latticework ever changing, ever moving in its frenzied dance. That was the wonderful thing about the island, it was always so vibrant, so alive, from the trees stretching towards the heavens to the animals he could faintly sense scurrying about in the underbrush. The water he eased himself into was no different. Dozens of species of plant life swayed with the water just below the surface, swishing around his legs while fish darted away as he passed. He’d watched Adam sit and stare for hours as marine life passed by the ship’s windows, occasionally pressing a hand to the glass -- if it was glass -- when a curious animal came close, content to simply watch life go on around him. That was Adam’s way, he preferred to avoid entanglement by separating himself from those around him, the ever vigilant observer. Kevin himself had never been satisfied with watching, he’d always needed to immerse himself in sensation, to feel life flutter and sway around him. He liked this particular spot on the island for that reason, sensing the excitement that flowed from the animals as they wondered at his strange presence, the pure energy emanating from the plants that spiraled up from the pool floor. He could even, if he concentrated hard enough, discern faint emotions in the air as thousands of birds called to one another in the canopy above. It was different here than it was among people, on a deserted island with the nearest person heavily shielded and more than a kilometer away. Here he could let down his shields and be perfectly at ease, wrap himself in sensation without worry. At home settling his defenses meant summarily drowning in a sea of thoughts that were not his own. ‘Real’ life had always been like that, after his abilities had manifested with a vengeance in early childhood before he’d known what to do with them, nearly driving him mad before he’d stumbled quite unintentionally onto a way to shut out the voices. But shielding took energy, and focus, two things of which Kevin did not have an unlimited reserve. He wondered if the others understood how hard it was for him to keep people out… to keep them out. They all expected a certain amount of privacy from him, respect of each others’ minds was tantamount to their relationship to each other, but they seemed not to realize that it was even harder for him to block their thoughts than those of normal people. It had always amazed him how it never took anything out of them to shut each other out - but then none of them had ever been able to hear normal people’s thoughts the way he had. His ‘gift’, if he could call it that, was stronger, an affinity between his mind and others that made his powers more…intense than theirs. And wasn’t that just splendid? They had never talked about it, but as often as not what went unspoken was louder to him than that voiced in sonorous detail. He was different from even them somehow. A freak among freaks. Normal people were even more frightening. They were at a loss to explain what it was exactly, but they had always seemed to sense somewhere deep in their unconscious minds that there was something strange about him. He had been branded an outcast by his peers in his earliest days of schooling, the weird little bloke that was to be avoided at all costs. He hadn’t really minded, it was actually quite the symbiotic relationship. He stayed away from them, they stayed away from him, and the headaches were a little less severe on the rare occasions that his control slipped. Whenever he became too tired and burnt out he felt everything in the people around him, their emotions becoming as clear as his own, a phenomenon that was both terrifying and enthralling. As unwelcome as the intrusion upon his own thoughts was, he had to admit that he was fascinated by them, by their lives, the mundane little details that probably bored them to tears that were a mystery to him in every sense of the word. He tried to imagine a life where handing in his homework late or forgetting to do his chores was his biggest concern, and laughed at the triviality of it all. Normal people were sheep, like those unsuspecting bystanders in Megabyte’s favorite horror movies that were hacked to pieces in the first fifteen minutes simply because they didn’t recognize the threat. He wondered often what some of his classmates would do if they knew that not two months earlier while they were off languishing on summer holiday, a madwoman extra from a very bad science fiction marathon had come close to letting loose a newer, deadlier killer bee. They thought there was something wrong with him, and maybe they were right. Maybe his mother was right, zealot that she was, maybe he was some sort of demon. After all, if God had intended for him to use his ‘gift’, why then did it hurt so much to let go? How did the suffering of everyday living fit into the grand design? Was it too late to say yes to that exorcism? He smiled at the thought, pushing off a rock to float on his back, all too aware that not even Megabyte would find his self deprecation amusing. Lisa had insisted on teaching him to swim the instant General Damon and her mother had left the island that first day, claiming that she could not spend the rest of her life worrying that he would drown the next time he hit the water. They did make their home on an island, after all. He’d never have the grace of an Olympian, but after a few days under her less than patient tutelage he had learned enough to stay afloat on his own and considered it a great accomplishment that he had conquered his fear of water. He had since spent as much time as was humanly possible here at the waterfall, floating on his back, feeling the tickle of the weeds as they brushed against his skin. He remembered well finding this place, wandering into the underbrush with Megabyte soon after they’d broken out. The redhead had been ecstatic, the island was a place with no parents, no worries and no rules, their very own Eden in the face of their everyday world. He also remembered how furious Lisa had been that they’d wandered off, dragging Adam into the morass of plant life in their wake as moral support for her impending tirade. For his part when they were found, the Australian had waited patiently for her to come up for air, put a comforting arm around her shoulders and explained in that terribly rational way of his that they didn’t know much about the wildlife in their new home and that they should be careful when they wandered, not to eat anything they found or goad any of the animals. He was also, ironically enough, worried about exotic insects. It was odd now, thinking of those early days, of Lisa’s tendency to mother-hen and Adam’s patience whenever he and Megabyte wandered into trouble. Kevin often wondered if his friends had ever acknowledged their parental tendencies or simply gone about their business unaware of the familial atmosphere they provided. He was happy then, he thought, and terribly naïve, desperate for the sense of stability that his new family seemed so easily to provide and carelessly trusting in its permanence. It was amusing in a way to think of himself as happy, an openly ridiculous, simplistic emotion that seemed still somehow vague and unidentifiable. Happiness was quaint, a novelty, and in a sense real torture because it always ends. Back then he wasn’t aware of the impending fallout, when Mum still called him a witch in jest and Lisa was still ordering Megabyte around and clinging to Adam for support when she was unsure of herself. Before the happiness he had finally found had been leveled in one fell swoop by the same girl he trusted implicitly. The girl who taught him how to swim, who nagged him to do his homework, who comforted him when he fell against a bulkhead in a particularly dodgy game of tag. One day she was an integral part of his life, and the next, she was just… gone. Dropped off the face of the Earth in one deft maneuver without any regard to the bond she shared with him or any of the others. He tried to rationalize her leaving, knowing that she was worried about her mum, but some small, wholly irrational part of him had always believed that there had been some more personal reason that she’d been so eager to leave, and that part more often than not was in control. Maybe that was unfair to Lisa, but he had never been very good at dealing with loss and blaming her was easier. Fundamentally wrong perhaps, but much easier than facing up to the fact that he’d lost her to circumstances beyond both their controls. If he’d allowed himself to accept it as an unforeseeable anomaly, he’d be forced to accept the fact that nothing in his life was permanent, that he could lose any of the others at any time. It was a thought that had become a constant at the back of his mind since Lisa’s untimely departure, a sinking suspicion that separation from his two remaining friends was inevitable, which kept him at once reaching out for them and holding back on his emotions, spending as much time with the two boys as possible while becoming increasingly laconic. Their silently agreed upon reticence on the subject made it easy to keep things safely hidden away. And now there was a confounding variable thrown into the equation. Her name was Ami. For one unsettling instant in the hospital as he was hovering in that diaphanous place between sleep and consciousness, he had blearily looked at the faces of the people by his bedside and believed that Lisa had come home. He’d reached out to her in his semiconscious state, only to recoil at the unfamiliar presence that greeted him. Ami seemed nice enough, but there was something about the familiar way that she behaved around his friends that unnerved him. She seemed to fall into step with the two boys a little too easily, to speak a little too intimately, to expect a little more than he was willing to allow. She wanted to be one of them, and though he admitted that it was her right as a Tomorrow Person, he couldn’t help but feel that they had betrayed Lisa somehow, that even though Ami really was nothing like his former friend, she was replacing her. It felt wrong, and despite how much he wanted to be able to assure the girl who looked to him for support when she was feeling alienated, he simply could not bring himself to do it. No matter what had happened between he and Lisa, he owed her at least enough to respect her memory. There was something in Ami’s presence that he just couldn’t reconcile with his idea of how to go about it. The soporific effects of floating kept him hovering on the surface of the water for well over an hour, paying little heed to the time as the sun climbed higher in the sky. It was something close to eight hours difference between the island and home, which meant, much to his continued amusement, that he was floating serenely into tomorrow afternoon. It made him smile as he recalled a vague account of Adam’s first encounter with Colonel Masters, nearly a year ago. *“We call ourselves the Tomorrow People. But we’re not time travelers from the future or anything.”* They were time travelers in a way, flitting through different time zones in an instant, completely unaware of the changes unless it was noticeably darker in their destination. It made wearing a watch rather pointless, and was wreaking havoc on his circadian rhythms. The thought prompted a snicker, which in Kevin’s somnolent state was momentarily delayed in being attributed to another person. As realization dawned, he bolted upright from his comfortable position, sputtering water as he hastily attempted to rebuild his shielding for the intruder. “You don’t have to do that Kevin, I kind of like it. Being able to sense your thoughts, I mean.” He stopped his construction and swiveled to face Ami, or rather Ami’s foot, as it was suspended at eye level by the rocky embankment on which she stood. Pushing his hair back out of his eyes, he stared at her in bemusement. She was barefoot, dressed in an obscenely bright bikini in a horrible orange hue that was only more jarring against the warm cocoa of her skin, fiddling with the tie of an equally obscene sarong as plaited hair fell into her eyes. She barely looked up as she continued to struggle with the garment, regarding him peripherally as he pulled a section of slimy green algae from a plant by his leg and began to dissect it. “I wonder sometimes, why do we have these gifts if we’re not going to use them? Why do we shut one another out?” He stared at her foot, noting more of the obscenity painted across her toenails, and considered his answer. “They’re afraid.” Her head snapped up, eyes wide, almost dropping the sarong into the pool. “Are you afraid Kevin?” “Terrified.” Even to his own ears his voice sounded terribly calm, looking into her eyes as he said it, wondering if she realized how many layers there were to that statement, on how many levels the fear pervaded his life. Wondering if she would care. She studied him for a moment, her lovely face unreadable as he felt his mind being dissected, suddenly all too aware of his vulnerability without his shielding. He wondered briefly if that was the real reason he maintained it, if all of his other excuses were simply that as he felt her ease herself into the water beside him. “You’re not like the others, are you? The boys, they have this way about them, an eagerness, I suppose - like they can do anything when they’re together.” She smiled at the thought. “It’s hard to explain exactly, but I don’t get it from you.” The boys. There was a possessive lilt to that, as if it would have been more appropriate to say her boys. And maybe they were, after everything they’d been through together in his absence. Adam and Megabyte had certainly been chipper of late, as if her arrival was a sudden sign that it was alright to move on and rebuild. Kevin wasn’t sure how he felt about that. Nobody had asked him if he wanted to rebuild. He couldn’t remember the last time someone had been here with him. Adam had recognized early on that this was where Kevin came to get away, and if there was one thing Adam was good at, it was giving space. Kevin understood, and after everything he appreciated the conscious effort not to smother him, but there were times when he wished he could have shared his haven with his friend. Megabyte had been slightly amused by the waterfall when they’d first come across it, but as with most things, he lost interest fairly quickly. Where Kevin saw a vibrant, colorful, emotional landscape just begging to be explored, Megabyte saw fish and plants, slightly slimy and ‘majorly gross’. Give him a man made pool any day, he’d said, something where the bottom doesn’t walk out from under your feet. He wasn’t sure why Ami was here, she was surprisingly difficult to read, only that she realized the place was important to him. Her ever escalating need to win his approval baffled him, but she went about it in such an innocent way that he couldn’t bring himself to be cross with her. For some reason, and he was at a loss to explain why, she desperately wanted to be his friend. She wanted to learn what was important to him and hear about more than what he thought of the latest B-movie Megabyte dragged them all to. She had a genuine interest in his well being, as if she could sense something was wrong and couldn’t rest until she had helped him somehow. “I feel like I know you.” He looked up to find her studying him again, dark eyes alight with mirth at his confusion as he attempted to follow her train of thought. “From the first time I saw you, I had this feeling that I was meant to help you. Because you were my friend.” An odd sinking feeling accompanied that, as Kevin remembered the bond he’d felt so immediately with his fellow Tomorrow People. It was something special, there was no denying that, the instant cohesion that bound them together when they needed it most - but it made them complacent. The illusion of intimacy made it easy to forget that any friendship took work. The constant feeling of peace around one another masked whatever discord cropped up until it was too late to fix things. Unless they learned to pay more attention to one another he knew his worst fears would come true. They really would lose each other. Ami shook her head sagely and laid a comforting hand on his shoulder. “But I don’t really know you, it’s just a feeling. We share a bond, but we don’t really know anything about one another, not the way I’d like.” Hysterical relief washed over him as he looked into her eyes and saw something more than compassion stirring there. She understood. Amidst the confusion, denial, and fear, that simple fact was almost too much to believe. No one had ever simply understood him, clarity had always required lengthy explanations. He gaped at her in shock as she continued. “And maybe we never will, but I’d like to try.” It was a simple gesture, an appeal for his trust given in such complete innocence that for the first time in a long time, Kevin allowed himself to hope. He couldn’t accept Ami, not yet, but neither could he ignore her any longer. She was a part of him, like Adam or Megabyte. Like Lisa, even if she refused to acknowledge it. It wasn’t everything, but it was a start. And there was always tomorrow. _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com - To unsubscribe to arfic-l, send an email to "majordomo@xmission.com" with "unsubscribe arfic-l" in the body of the message. Please read this message carefully and keep it for future reference. It contains all of the information you will need to know regarding subscribing, unsubscribing, and posting to the list. (This message is duplicated at the ALTERNATE REALITIES Fan Fiction Archive, http://www.alternate-realities.net in the section "Mailing Lists.") *~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~* What is ARfic-L (The Alternate Realities Fan Fiction Mailing List)? The Alternate Realities Fan Fiction Mailing List (ARfic-L) is for the posting, reading, discussion and critiquing of fan fiction in the following fandoms: Highlander: The Series, Buffy: the Vampire Slayer, Angel: the Series, and the Tomorrow People. Crossovers with any of these television universes are also welcome. These universes are the backbone of the Alternate Realities Fan Fiction Archive and that is the reason that they are central and most important to this list. *~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~* LIST PURPOSE AND DESCRIPTION The purpose of ARfic-L is to post original fan fiction for the enjoyment of others. The list may also be used to request critiques, issue challenges, request beta readers and discuss stories and/or ideas brought up in the stories. If you want to share fic or receive opinions on fic, this is the list for you. If you want to read fic, this is also the list for you. But please, keep in mind that as a reader, you do have a duty to comment on what you read. Feedback does wonderful things for authors. ARfic-L welcomes fan fiction in draft or finished form. However, if you are posting a draft or unfinished copy of a work for an opinion, please make that known up front (a good place to do this is your heading and author's notes). Also, if your work is unfinished and in draft form, please, please run at least a spell-check before posting. The list is NOT to promote your new 'zine, web page, or to discuss television shows. If you absolutely feel the need to announce something that is off- topic, you may do so in the form of an archive fic. (Archive fics are discussed later in this mailing). As an alternative, you may send your website, 'zine, or mailing list information to the List Administrator and she will post it as an ADMIN (administrative) announcement. Simply stated, you may feel free to post: *Fan fiction (including crossovers, adult, and/or slash fiction) from any of the following fandoms: Highlander: The Series, Buffy: the Vampire Slayer, Angel: the Series, and the Tomorrow People, or any crossovers with any of those fandoms. *On-Topic requests for beta readers, help with content, etc. *Discussions of fan fiction, characters, etc. *Archive Fics (see the "Archive Fic" section for more information) You may not post: *Flames - We all have our own opinions - but they are opinions. If you disagree say so, but flaming is simply not, under any circumstances, acceptable, ever! You will be banned or unsubscribed immediately if you abuse another member of the list. NOTE: If you feel that someone on the list is being spiteful, abusive or nasty, don't flame them back. Send email to Michele (mbumbarg@pair.com) and she will perform her List Mom duties. *Off-Topic Posts - All off-topic messages must be sent to the list in the form of an archive fic, no matter how short, that way you are not violating list rules. (See "Archive Fic" for more info on this.) *SPAM: This includes unsolicited Ads, Virus Warnings, Get Rich Quick, etc. Sending this to the list will usually result in permanent removal. *Requests for Missing Parts - If you're missing parts to a story, contact the author *privately* or ask the List Owner. In addition to this, you may also check the list archives at eScribe.com: http://www.escribe.com/tv/jeff/. Do not post requests for missing parts to the list. *~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~* SUBSCRIBING TO THE LIST: This email list is hosted at Xmission.com. You may subscribe to the list by sending an email to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. In the body of the message, type the following command (without quotes): "subscribe arfic-L" *~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~* UNSUBSCRIBING FROM THE LIST: If you want to unsubscribe from this list, DO NOT send a request to the ARfic-L! It won't work and it will just annoy everyone on the list. If you decide that you wish to unsubscribe, please do the following: Send an email to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. In the body of the message, type the following command (without quotes): "unsubscribe arfic-L" *~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~* POSTING TO THE LIST: To post a story or message to the list, send your email to arfic-L@lists.xmission.com. *~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~* THE LIST ARCHIVE All stories will be automatically archived at the Alternate Realities Fan Fiction Archive (http://www.alternate- realities.net) unless the author makes a note stating otherwise. There is also automatic archiving of the list at eScribe.com. This is a searchable archive, located at http://www.escribe.com/tv/jeff/ *~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~* ARCHIVE FICS If you just absolutely, positively have to tell the list about your new website, a new zine, new mailing list, etc, you may do so as long as the message is in the form of a story. This is a fun way to let you get your message across without breaking the "off-topic" list rule! Archive fics need to have the same header/labeling info as regular fics. *~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~* STORY FORMATTING: Please keep all posts under 40k in size. If your story is larger than this, break it down into smaller parts and include 'end of part number' at the bottom of every post, so that we will know whether it came through complete or not. In order to make your fan fiction readable and enjoyable for everyone on the list, please follow the following guidelines: Your post *must* be in ASCII Text, Text for DOS, Text Only (Microsoft Word), Text (Windows Write), Text Document (Wordpad) or any other *unformatted* text type. (Unformatted is the key word here. No word processor code, html, etc. Smart quotes, symbols and special characters should be removed). The best way to post your story is to cut and paste it into your regular email program. Also, please mind your line length. Try to keep all lines under 70 characters. (Many commercial word-processing programs will do this automatically if you choose the 'Save As Text' option.) Do *not* send attachments to the list. The list is not configured for attachments and in many cases, they will be discarded. If they are not discarded, they will often be delivered to mailboxes as gibberish files. *~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~* HEADERS/LABELING: Headers MUST accompany every chapter of a work of fan fiction and include the following: Title & Part Number Author Email Address TV Series/Universe Content/Rating (Important!) Summary (not required but good for multi-part stories) Spoiler Warning (if applicable) Disclaimer (see below) Distribution Author's Note (not required) Dedication (not required) Please use a disclaimer similar to the following: "The characters in this story belong to , no copyright infringement is intended." You may also write your own disclaimer, just be certain that you point out that the characters that you are using are not yours and give credit to the creator/writer/production company of the television series. Writing "Standard Disclaimers Apply" does not suffice. ADULT and SLASH fiction are permitted on the list as long as it is labeled. The header in your post MUST be labeled ADULT or SLASH if there is adult or slash content. This rule is in place for two reasons: 1. There just might be someone under the legal age subscribed to this list and reading these posts, and they should be warned so that they may delete them in advance. 2. Some subscribers have no interest in ADULT fiction; likewise some subscribers who are interested in ADULT fiction have no interest in SLASH fiction. With proper labeling, people may delete the posts without ever having to read them. No INCEST or CHILD ABUSE stories, PERIOD! (If you story requires hinting at Child Abuse, then it may be acceptable - but do it tastefully.) *~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~* THE PIECES PARTS *WRITING THE SUBJECT LINE The Subject Line of your Message should include the following: TITLE PART NUMBER/PARTS IN STORY AUTHOR'S NAME/PSEUDONYM (Optional) EXAMPLE:"A Union of Souls" (3/9) by Michele Bumbarger *WRITING AN INTRODUCTION DISTRIBUTION STATEMENT: Every work of fan fic posted to the Alternate Realities Fan Fiction Mailing List (ARfic-L) may be archived at Alternate Realities Fan Fiction site. If you do not want this to happen, please state this in the introduction section of your fiction by writing 'DO NOT ARCHIVE' or add a note requesting that the archivist contact you for permission first. SPOILER WARNING: While it is a nice assumption to think that everyone is on the same page as you and has seen all the episodes of a show that you have, this is not necessarily true. As a courtesy to those who may not be current with the shows you are writing for, and as a courtesy to any international subscribers who might be behind on seasons, please include a spoiler warning. Some people do not like knowing what is going to happen on their favorite shows with their favorite characters *before* it happens. RATING: Although this list completely open and uncensored to *all* forms of fan fiction (EXCEPT stories involving sexual abuse w/ children involved and incest), it is important that you include a rating for your work. This helps prepare the reader for what is coming, and helps archivists when the time comes to archive your fiction. The community tends to use the American MPAA rating system for movies: G - appropriate for all ages. PG - nothing graphic, but not appropriate for young readers. R - contains sex, violence or language and is not appropriate for anyone under legal age. NC-17 - contains *graphic* sex, violence or language and is not appropriate for anyone under legal age and some adults. CONTENT WARNINGS: Please try to note in the introduction if your story is ADULT, SLASH, includes a romance between two characters (and please note which characters), includes rape, or if a main character dies, religious issues, etc. While some readers enjoy these kinds of stories, others might want to avoid them. SUMMARY: It is important that you include a short summary of your fan fic (no more than one or two sentences). This is just to give the reader an idea of what to expect. Think of it like the tag line for a movie, or the jacket of a book. DISCLAIMER: This is very important! A statement informing the reader that the characters in the story do not belong to you must be in EVERY story or part of story that you send to the list. This is because of copyright laws, and if it's not there you and I could get in trouble, and I would hate for that to happen, and I'm sure you would, too. I thought that it had some interesting information, suggestions and links to be applied to fan fiction and fan fiction authors. I didn't think it would to pass it along! (Be warned, many are slash oriented and use slash encounters and slash 'ships as examples, but many of the points being made really can be applied to many types of fan fiction.) Happy writings! ~Michele~ ----Original Message Follows---- Reply-To: fca-l@trickster.org some tips In speaking of traps to avoid, there are several very good, wide ranging - and often hilarious - rants on pet peeves in fanfiction that are multi-fandom in scope. There are many more that are fandom specific, but the multi-fandom rants are more likely to be of general use. Of course, one person's pet peeve may be another's favorite kink. YMMV for any particular example, but the rants do offer a range of potential problems to avoid. These selected recommendations are from memory and in no particular order - so I'm sure I've missed a few favorites. Also, most essays/rants listed here are slash oriented and often contain sexually explicit examples. Sandy K. Herrold hosts a wonderful piece entitled "The Big List of Pet Peeves" that is multi-fandom in scope and multi-author, if I remember correctly. http://trickster.org/fannishbutterfly/10_peeves.html AnneZo has a very good series on advice for anyone writing fanfiction, entitled "Rules of the Road." See the "Road Rage" section near the bottom of the page for several pet peeve rants. http://trickster.org/radiofree/annezo/rules.html Miriam has an interesting essay entitled "Pet Peeves & Small Dogs" that focuses on those small but impossible to ignore distractions in slash. http://www.asan.com/users/pongo/PetPeeves.html Sigrid (aka anne h) Rants & Rambles section is worth reading in its entirety. She has a new URL, along with Resonant at Trickster but since Sigrid hasn't moved in yet, the essays are still at her old Geocities address. http://www.geocities.com/TelevisionCity/Taping/5963/rnr/rnr.htm Inspired by Miriam, Sigrid & Resonant compiled and edited a great pet peeve piece called "The Big List of Small Dogs." Also not to be missed are the following, both multi-authored. The Divine Adoratrice has a good essay page, which unfortunately hasn't been updated in over a year. Several essays deal with fanfiction writing conventions and cliches, while others deal with fandom in a broader sense. http://www.trickster.org/adoratrice/natter.htm And of course, FCA's list admin Lucy hosts the Fanfic Symposium which is always worth a look - and recently updated. Check out the message board and letters sections as well as the columns. http://trickster.org/symposium _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com - To unsubscribe to arfic-l, send an email to "majordomo@xmission.com" with "unsubscribe arfic-l" in the body of the message. Then I'm going to dive into conversation, play devil's advocate and in general, probably really make somebody mad. ~Michele~ ----Original Message Follows---- Hi everyone! Grammar nazi here again. Well, from everyone's comments on the list, I got the picture that a lot of people were a little unhappy as to the quality of a) their own and b) other people's spelling, grammar and so on. So, from all the comments here, I finally sat down, thought 'screw it!' and wrote an essay. Please read it- you might just find something of use. In fact, I think every American etc should read the part on characterisations of British people, and translations of Spike speak. It's not specifically Cordelia/Angel oriented, apart from a small part which deals with their characterisations. It contains parts of my original post, elaborated, and whole new sections. In the words (sort of) of Shakespeare: "if this writer has offended, think but this, and all is mended, that you have but slumber'd here, whilst this essay did appear." :-) *Fanfiction, from a Grammar Nazi's/Brit's/Beta's Point of View* An essay on the ins and outs of character writing, and managing to remain grammatically sound. Includes the hows and how-nots of writing British characters. Disclaimer: This is getting really repetitive and boring, but I really just had to point out a few things. I'm not proclaiming myself superior to anyone - most people probably already know all this stuff, and write far better than I do. Don't be insulted over the more basic things; I'm just pointing out the most consistent errors I see. Please take the time to read it, though, as I speak from a great deal of painful, punctuationless, tormented experience. I have betaed. *Spelling* Okay, firstly, the most commonly misspelled word in the whole of fandom - vicious. Not viscous. Viscous is a descriptive word for a gungy type of liquid. Otherwise, the main kind of errors creeping in are a) typos or b) those little words every individual has that they just cannot spell. One of mine is 'amount.' I just insert two 'm's. Just watch out for quirks like that, and, if all else fails, use a spellchecker. I know they're not always reliable, but they do pick up the most atrocious mistakes. *Grammar* This post was inspired by a complaint about the poor quality of basic grammar on the AngelCordelia fanfic board. In fact, this entire essay is the result of a shorter, smaller rant I wrote in reply to a post by Aunt Lorna, who was complaining about the poor grammar in fics (kudos to her for admitting she's as guilty as anyone). Another poster wrote: "There are times when I'm writing off an 'episode high' (You know that time when you run to the computer right after the shows over with multiple ideas for a fic), my brain is all a jumble with info from the show, the following weeks promo and the main theme for my next fic. So, it shows when I don't reread." I think that passage is fairly self-explanatory. I completely understand and agree with it. Thank you Danyeal. Moral - no beta? That's fine, some don't need one. If you feel that you're capable of catching your own mistakes, and that a beta slows you down, that's all well and good. But Reread, Reread, Reread. I'm probably the most neurotic spelling/grammar nazi I know, but I still manage to spell at least a few words out of the average 8000 wrong. Not bad really, but still. Typos happen, and everyone has a few words they consistently misspell. Rereading really does help, but I sympathise with those who don't like it- I'm dreadful at rereading, because I start to feel very embarrassed about what I've written, and wonder what the hell I'm doing. Another thing people might find, and I'm doing it as I write this, is that their brain gets ahead of what they're actually writing, and you end up putting words in the wrong order/skipping them out/missing out letters. Again, re-read, get a beta, use a spellcheck. A few of the more common errors- Know the differences: to, too, two "Angel went to see the oracles." "Cordelia decided to go too." "The two of them went together." their, they're, there "Their car was stolen." "They're angry because their car was stolen." "Xander and Anya stood there, angry because their car was stolen." were, we're, weir (?!?!) "Buffy and Spike were getting married." "'We're engaged!' she said, as she and Spike were to be wed." "The water went through the weir." [Sorry, couldn't think of a relevant example] your, you're "Your hair is adorable," Cordelia said. "You're adorable, and your hair is fine," she said. its, it's This is a harder one, which anyone can get wrong at times. "It's getting dark," as in 'it is'. "Its body was scaly and slimy" - belonging to it. loose, lose "The demon was on the loose," "I've got nothing to lose." choose, chose "I choose" in the present. "I chose" in the past. Know, now, no "I know all about it!" Now that made Cordelia angry. "I know all about it already!" "I know already! There is no way you're getting out of this one." etc Use correct tenses. I know that sounds silly, particular assuming English is your native tongue, but I've read whole fics written in the present. That's fine if it's intentional (POVs, maybe? Can't think why else it would be, but...) A third person narrative (ie "Once upon a time, there was vampire named Angel who was running a business with his seer, Cordelia") should ALWAYS be in the past. Hence the 'was'. Please, please use commas and other punctuation appropriately! Neverending sentences are *not* fun. Hint- commas can*not* be used instead of full stops/periods. Commas always come at the end of speech: "_____________," unless you use an exclamation mark/point, or a question mark/point. (!/?) You can write using slang, but not so much that it sounds that the entire story is being narrated either by a) Drusilla on crack or b) Harmony on a better day. *Characterisation* Very, very first point: spell the character's names correctly. These are the most commonly misspelled names as written in the Watcher's Diary and Shooting Scripts: Drusilla (no 'c') Xander Lavelle Harris (not Zander) Willow Rosenberg (we have never been told her middle name is 'Anne', but so many people seem to have picked this up from somewhere. In fact, in one cut line, Willow says: '____ is my middle name. Or at least it would be if my parents hadn't chosen Danielle') Her mother's name is Sheila, father Ira. Wesley Wyndam-Pryce (oh, the controversy. Wyndham? Wyndam? Well, the shooting scripts say 'Wyndam', so that's what I'd lean towards.) Don't give characters new nicknames without explaining it. For example, Cordelia has only ever been called Cordy, Cord by the Cordettes, and on one occasion 'CC' by Xander. Therefore, she is *not* Delia, or Cora, or similar. The Host: Krevlorneswath of the Deathwok Clan, or Lorne. Willy the Snitch, not 'Willie' My own little pet hate - if you want to start calling Spike 'William' for some reason, and feel the need to shorten it, please don't call him 'Billy'. It just sounds incredibly strange. Needs must, go with 'Will'. Much for manly and flattering. Oh, and if you make up a surname for Spike, go with something that sounds remotely British. Just find some mainly unknown dead and buried British author, and steal their surname. Remember, Spike was originally alive in Victorian England. Hate to dredge up the memories, but Riley, not Reilly. Jonathan has a surname. It's Levenson. So does Devon. It's MacLeish. Harmony Kendall. Oz's real name is Daniel Osbourne, but for the love of God don't start calling him Danny or similar. Anya possibly has two surnames. Originally, she called herself Anya Emerson, then, in Checkpoint, called herself Anya Jenkins. The first could be a quirk of the demonic persona (Anyanka), but the second could be her trying to obscure her identity to make sure Watchers couldn't find out any more about her. If you're writing a character (usually necessary in fanfiction), make sure you're capable of it. You cannot, I repeat for emphasis and with a slightly desperate note in my voice, can*not* just write your own characters, and give them the names of the people in the series. It's just not right. Also, I beg of you, do *not* resort to a Mary Sue. In case you were unaware, a Mary Sue is when you just write yourself into the story as a new, 'original' character to fulfill your own fantasies. An even worse version of this is a Cordelia Sue or more often a Willow Sue - you're writing a character with the name of someone on the show, but it's just you again in disguised. Now, let me make myself clear on this - You Will Get Flamed. Or at least emails from the discontent readers. If you think Buffy's a bitch - fine. Just don't let it creep into your story, and have another character (translation - you) beat her to a pulp. I read Willow/Spike fic for a while, and in this ship, Buffy is, more often than not, a super-bitch who is supremely nasty (translation - brutally honest) to her best friend when she finds out poor innocent Willow is sleeping with a self-confessed homicidal maniac, and is into S&M. Because if that happened to your best friend, you'd just bottle it up and help address wedding invitations. Now, the characterisations rant is applicable to all 'ships, but this part is geared a little towards Cordelia/Angel, as this is one of my 'ships, and I myself occasionally write for it. Now, a few helpful hints to get you on your way if you're writing either of those characters- Angel does *not* commonly talk in huge, long, continuous sentences, and Cordy does *not* talk like she has won a Nobel prize for literature. Angel has been around for a bit, and doesn't use too much modern slang (he's only just got comfortable with calling Cordelia and Wesley 'Cordy' and 'Wes', for God's sake). Although, that doesn't necessarily apply to evil Angel. Angelus says whatever the hell he likes, but the 'hearing voices' rule still applies. 'Hearing voices technique' - This is how I write. I try to actually hear the characters saying the lines, and see their faces as they say them. If you can't, the odds are the lines are out of character. It takes a while to perfect it, and it can be quite dangerous to have, let's say Spike living in your head, but it is incredibly helpful. Cordelia's not unintelligent, but she also does not sound as if she should be on the cast of Dawson's Creek. She likes to occasionally live up to the 'shallow cheerleader' stereotype. Occasionally, she can be fairly profound, but usually she's happy with talking like a *normal* person. I do recommend you perfect your Angel and Cordy characterisations before you embark on that epic novel-style fic. The key to the writing thing is - whatever you come up with, it's yours. You have ultimate creative control. You have artistic license. If you want to do a Curse? What curse? story, that's fine. Just make sure you do deal with it at some point in another fic, instead of repeatedly taking the easy way out. *British Characterisations* If you're writing a Brit (eg most commonly Spike, Wesley or Giles), don't just assume that you can get away with inserting the words 'bloody', 'bollocks' (not bollix! Jesus, Mary and Joseph, they even get that wrong on the shooting scripts themselves, and it's how JM ends up saying it), 'bugger' or similar intermittently. It's offensive to those of us with English heritage. Get some English consultation, if you're really stuck. You won't be told to go to Hell, believe me. I don't think I'm the only beta who is desperate to fix the poor wrting of British folks. Again, pointers to follow. Posher Brits (ie Wesley, Giles) tend to use long words, have the British Stiff Upper Lip, try not to get emotional, and are not very good at expressing things they can't get out of text books or newspapers, ie - of a personal nature. However, both Giles and Wesley have developed as characters, and are prone to language during emotional outbursts. These outbursts will usually happen when the character in question has kept the issue pent up, boiling over inside them until they finally snap. See 'Checkpoint' for examples. Spike and Drusilla style Anglians tend to speak their minds rather colourfully, not minding dropping in the odd 'bloody hell' etc, but not so often that you start to wonder if they actually know of the existence of any other words. Spike in particular still has the stiff upper lip, and only really gets extremely emotional when drunk (another common trait in British people, trust me. A little alcohol, they open right up and let loose all the things they've been wanting to say for quite some time.) or it involves matters of the heart. Because Spike is sappy like that. Remember, he hardly ever shows it! He's really a manly man. Just think of any guy you know, and multiply his ego by ten, and you could be close to Spike (who is, for the record, my favourite character). Oh, random Spike-related definitions I just thought of: 'Chit' is a derogatory word for a young girl. 'Bint' - bitch, stupid woman 'Bloke' - guy. You can*not* use 'mate' in this circumstance. I've seen it done. 'Mate' is only used in the context, "Alright, mate?" "Hello, mate," etc. 'Bird' - woman, usually of attractive variety. bloody/bleedin' - damn ______ (followed by word/phrase: "Bloody women" "Bleeding idiots" etc) bloody/bleedin' hell! - damnit, crap, etc piffle - crap (load of piffle = load of crap) peaches - pet name, sometimes derogatory ducks - pet name sod - idiot sodding - damn (see 'bloody' etc) poof/poofter - gay man (often used as a derogative description for any man) nancy-boy - see 'poof' etc shag - screw, sleep with bollocks - technically, testicles. General exclamation. And just for the record, neither Giles, nor Wesley, nor Spike is from Yorkshire, Lancashire, or anywhere too far from London, to be safe. In fact, it's actually been said on the show that Spike is a Londoner, I assume originally West, but now putting on a North London accent. Contrary to one line from Cordelia: "You little Cockney!" Spike is NOT a cockney. If you want cockneys, watch EastEnders some time on BBC cable. Actually, I recommend that for developing a good all-round knowledge of British accents. However ear-drum-shredding it may occasionally be. With Drusilla, I never can tell where in London she's from, if at all. Depends on the accent Juliet Landau decides to go with for each particular episode. Here are some counties you can get away with for characters such as Giles or Ethan, or maybe a fictional character of your own creation. Counties: Sussex (West or East) Surrey Buckinghamshire Hertfordshire Essex Hampshire Kent More northern cities, which all have very different dialects: Birmingham, Leeds, Manchester, Liverpool, Newcastle. There is not a chance in Hell that any of the British characters that have been introduced to us on Buffy are from any of these places. The casting directors are probably a little worried that people who are not native Brits, or in fact Mancunians/Scousers/Geordies/Brummies (from Manchester/Liverpool/Newcastle/Birmingham - quite useful to know the collectives for different cities) will not understand the variations on English. Probably true. That's why mainly only Queen's English is represented. As in Southern England. East Anglia is also a whole other dialect. I've read some fics adamently claiming that Spike is a northerner, in particular, a Scouser. It's like saying someone from Oklahoma has never left Los Angeles. The dialects are *that* different. One final thing: pig Latin does not constitute real Latin. You cannot just take random Latin words, string them together in the order they come in English, and expect them to be credible. It's not how the long dead language works. Find someone who can do Latin, and get some help. It's really quite complex to write, and people more in the know *will* be irritated by half-assed attempts. *Betas* One third, final little thing; the beta reader. I just want to point out, from a beta's point of view, how insanely irritating it is when someone sends you a fic with abominable... everything, really, and actually expects you to rewrite it for them, line by line. It's the stuff of countless nightmares. If I have a lot of time, and the writer is very nice about it, I may attempt it. The last time I did, however, a 4000 word fic took me three and a half hours. Now, that's a lot of time I could spend writing my own, studying and so on. So I just ask that authors show us some respect when sending fics. I love to beta, but sometimes I get something in my inbox that just makes me want to scream. I am so, so sorry to demonstrate my literary naziness. Every beta means well, and criticism is always constructive. You're not going to get a story back with the note 'This is crap. Try again.'. The points a beta will make will be individualised, and usually very helpful; we just want to reduce the amount of block text on the internet, splitting it into readable sections, and refine storylines. Gotta say, though, even published authors are guilty of the crime of continuous sentences and little to no grammar. If anyone's attempted to read Joyce's "Ulysses", they'll know what I mean. The moral of this essay is: take some pride in your writing. Get a beta, but don't submit them to such torture they want to curl up in a ball and wish for death. Betas are particularly sensitive to bad spelling, grammar etc (I wonder why?) and it can actually be quite upsetting when faced with a tale of epic proportions that only has three periods, a comma and 407 exclamation points. That is not what a beta's there for. A beta is an editor - he or she will put right occasional typos, point out continuous mistakes, and give you ideas as to how to improve or continue your story. Some betas will do line by line editing, but bear in mind how time consuming this is. All the best writers have editors - letting you in on a secret, very few journalists or authors can spell or do grammar. It's an editor's raison d'etre. There are relatively few people cursed with the inherent ability to do spelling and grammar. It's a very good idea to make good use of these people, if they're offering their services, but treat them with respect. Sending a beta an enormous fanfic with no puctuation is not going to inspire warm, fluffy feelings. It's more likely to cause clinical depression and multiple aneurysms. I'd just like to end with one of my most brilliant pieces of advice: USE A THESAURUS. There's one at http://www.thesaurus.com I couldn't write without it. Make sure you use appropriate synonyms, because otherwise it can backfire, but once you get used to it, you'll suddenly find your writing improving by tenfold, and also your day by day vocabulary. Fanfiction writing isn't just a skill that's completely detached and irrelevant to other areas of your life. It can really help you get ahead. Thesaurus.com also has select Latin phrases, which can be useful in proving your intellectual-ness, and in suitable parts of your story. Just don't use them throughout fics trying to prove how wonderful you are - you'll just confuse those readers who don't speak the Roman tongue fluently. Bearing this all in mind, grab a thesaurus, open Wordpad or similar, and write that story that's been simmering away in the muddle that is your mind. Anyone can write a fic. It just takes the basic writing skills we all have, practice, encouragement and pride enough in yourself to take into account all things I've pointed out. In the end, it's all worth it when you think how much others enjoy to read your work, and moreover, the sense of achievement you get from the finished product. Thank you for listening to my cacoethes loquendi! (in other words, babbling. Cacoethes meaning manic, I thought it was apt) Normal services will now be resumed. I'm curious to know why people are subscribed to this list and what their interests in fan fiction are. So, I've created a short questionnaire. Take a minute to answer a few questions, and let's see what we all have in common: What's Your Name/Handle? Favorite Fan Fiction Fandoms? Favorite Characters? Do You Write Fan Fiction? Favorite Fandom to write in? Favorite Fan Fiction story(ies)? Favorite Fan Fiction author? Do you have a website? (And if so, what's the URL) Any other comments, suggestions or words of wisdom? _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp - To unsubscribe to arfic-l, send an email to "majordomo@xmission.com" with "unsubscribe arfic-l" in the body of the message. Do not use quotes in your message. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: "Michele Bumbarger" Subject: Re: (arfic-l) Questionnaire Date: 20 Jul 2001 11:39:41 -0400 Ok, I'll go first seeing how I started this thing :-) What's Your Name/Handle? Michele Mason Bumbarger. Some of my older work is published on the 'net under my maiden name, Michele Mason. I also go by the handle 'CheleSedai.' Favorite Fan Fiction Fandoms? My favorite fan fiction fandoms are The Tomorrow People (New Series), Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel and Highlander. I do watch and occassionally read X-Files, (but I'm not a die-hard X-Phile), ST:TNG, ST:DS9, and ST:Voyager, Farscape, and what little Poltergeist: The Legacy fic can be found that does not have Derek/Rachel 'ship overtones. (Actually, my favorite characters are Nick, Alex and Kat, so if anyone knows of any *good* fic featuring them, let me know!) Favorite Characters? This question is always fun because I've noticed that sometimes it changes a bit from year to year even within the same fandom. So, I'll just take my list and go from there. Tomorrow People: Ami is my favorite character. I know I'm in the minority on that one, but that's life. Anyone who has read my fic prob has already figured that out by now though. Buffy: Depends on the season. Season 1 and Season 2 fiction would be Willow, hands down. Season 3 introduced Faith, enough said. Season 4 would have to be the comedy stylings of Xander and Anya, and of course, Spike. Season 5, again, Spike, Xander and Anya take center stage. And, I loved Glory. Wonderful, wonderful villain. Angel: Believe it or not, Cordelia. I mean, I think Angel is beautiful to look at, but I like Cordelia because of her growth. And Lorne, of course. Who can not like Lorne? Highlander: While I'm not sure it comes out much in my fiction, Richie Ryan and Joe Dawson have a special place in my heart. Do You Write Fan Fiction? Well, yes, as a matter of fact, I do a *few* bits of dribble out there. Favorite Fandom to write in? I started off writing in the Highlander universe. From there, I moved onto the Tomorrow People. I have only written two (three if you count "Ophelia") completely Buffy-verse fics in my whole life. I am a crossover freak (why, I'm not one hundred percent certain, guess I just like the "what-if" questions), and most of my work tends to be crossovers. Mostly crossovers with The Tomorrow People (New Series). My latest work (98% of which is unpublished) features the Tomorrow People crossed over with Buffy and Angel. (I have two original crossover universes based on that premise, "Shadows & Light" and "Dark Horizons" - each of them has taken a different direction, however, and aside from similiar characters, they really do not resemble one another). But other combinations are possible, such as an unfinished, unpublished Buffy/Highlander crossover (where Buffy is NOT the Immortal), and a Titanic/Highlander crossover (yes, you can use your imagination on that one), and of course, "Forever Tomorrow" which is a Highlander/Tomorrow People crossover universe. Favorite Fan Fiction story(ies)? Oh boy. Of course, this would happen. I have so many and the moment I get to this question, all of them fly out of my head. It would probably be easier to list one from each universe but ... still my brain is dying. Favorite Fan Fiction author? This is easier, although I am not going to list just one. I am going to list the authors that give me a happy when I see something with their name on it in my email, or ones who's sites I return to again and again. For Highlander, Sandra MacDonald is wonderful. I will re-read and re-read her work time and time again. Also, I enjoy the work of Alice in Stonyland. My favorite Buffy/Angel writers are Yahtzee and Rheanna (Ruth Hanna). Their work reads like an episode of the television show. And of course I can't forget my wicked conspirator, and partner in crime, Caroline Fales. Do you have a website? (And if so, what's the URL) Um, yes, I do. Several. The Alternate Realities Fan Fiction Archive (http://www.alternate-realities.net) Shadows & Light (http://www.alternate-realities.net/shadownslight) Dark Horizons (http://www.alternate-realities.net/darkhorizons) (Majorly under construction!) And forthcoming Forever Tomorrow (http://www.alternate-realities.net/forevertomorrow) Any other comments, suggestions or words of wisdom? I love it when writers try to do something different. I'm not talking about writers who can't stay in character, and take our favorite characters and make them unrecognizable, but writers who take a premise or idea and twist is to make something new and original. Not really a lurker on this list, I'm usually pretty vocal about fic, even if i post my feelings on the wrong list finally, a questionaire that doesn't ask the proverbial annoying question, "boxers or briefs?"! Here goeth nuthin... << What's Your Name/Handle? As my friend cinta would say, "Mi nombre es Tambien". But that's because she's phsyco. Umm, my name is Victoria Coady, and my handle is Slayervick. Favorite Fan Fiction Fandoms? Jayzus..well, I started reading fanfic as an avid Buffy fan, and then I realized that I was not the only person who watched that silly TV show Highalnder when I was in middle school. I stumbled upon the Jagged Edge Archive of Michele's making, and started looking into the TP's, and discovered that this had been in fact my favorite TV show when I was growing up, and I just didn't remember much of it. So, to make a long story short, I read BTVS, Angel, Highlander, HL:Raven as well, Sentinel, Tomorrow People, La Femme Nikita~my weakness~, And a load of other smaller fandoms that I brave on occasion. Favorite Characters? BTVS: Seas.1: Willow Seas2: Buff and Angel Seas3: Faith- Representing Boston, baby! Seas4:Buffster, Willow and Oz Seas5: Glory, Tara+Will, and Buffy HL: Richie Ryan HL:The Raven: Amanda TP: Adam is cuuuute Sentinel: Blair La femme Nikita: Birkoff Original Characters I love (i know some of their authors/creators, but not all. Just remember enjoying them): Sherezade Mackenzie (Amandr), Mahleah Brennan, Matthew Brennan, Calypso Wilde, Rachel Hudson (Trilby), and many more... Do You Write Fan Fiction? Weel.. umm... not that it will ever see the light of day, but yeah. I write Badfic. really really Badfic. My principle purpose in the fanfic world is as beta and sponge: i read EVERYTHING Favorite Fandom to write in? Well, I write in a cross between Buffy and Highlander, but I only use the lore and storyline behind the shows, I never use existing characters, I make my own based upon what the show says is possible, and what I want to be possible for my characters. Favorite Fan Fiction story(ies)? Again, too many to name. There was one that I had posted to Alternate Realities that I loved, and was very adament about. it was wicked long... "You Forgot to Mention Hell, Horatio". It was a lot of fun. took me a few days of concentrated hour after hour reading. Favorite Fan Fiction author? Well, Michele, you do hold this honor as the first TP writer that could draw my attention in so I could remember this show that I hadn't thought of in years, along with Sandra Macdonald, DocAnvil, Amandr and Dana Woods for making me laugh every time, and countless others that I have read in passing. Do You Write Fan Fiction? Yes lots of it Favorite Fandom to write in? Highlander Favorite Fan Fiction story(ies)? Detente (Kethrinet): It's 'the' best crossover I've ever read and it isn't even in my main fandoms. It's Kindred/Poltergeist the Legacy and it's incredible. True to both fandoms, correct characterisations. No overdone shipping and a storyline that you can believe the shows themselves would follow. You can find it at http://www.fanfiction.net/index.fic?action=story-read&storyid=335953 and when you go there, please review it and make the author write a sequel. This one deserves it. I've seen few authors who manage to write so real and lovingly gritty with respect to both fandoms. Well Author, from what I read, they're actually two authors writing together and damn fine at that. Kristin, but I have a hangover from AOL that makes me identify myself as Amethyst Maiden most of the time. Favorite Fan Fiction Fandoms? Tomorrow People (New Series), Buffy, Angel, Pretender, Sentinel... pretty much anything if it's well written. Favorite Characters? Hee hee. Um, I'm totally devoted to Megabyte at the moment because he's great fun to write, and I think on some level I identify with anyone who displays little or no aptitude for tact. I'm always amused by post-implant Spike, and I'm forever wanting to give Willow a big 'ol hug, so I'll read anything with them in it. I tend to gravitate towards Methos for some reason, as well as Doyle (Dammit, I miss him!) and Cordy, I think I'm just a sucker for a wise ass. :-) Do You Write Fan Fiction? Yep. Favorite Fandom to write in? The Tomorrow People is pretty much the only thing that inspires me to spend long hours in front of my computer. I'm still trying to figure out why that is, exactly. Favorite Fan Fiction story(ies)? My absolute all time favorite is called When I Was Your Age, by Nicole Grey. It's just really good characterization and it's funny as hell. Favorite Fan Fiction author? I have to choose? Ok, most are TPfic, the aforementioned Nicole Grey (who actually made me rethink all those years spent watching Millennium), Michelle Bumbarger (and unending source of well written *everything*), Caroline Fales (Who I'm pretty sure I read at the beginning of my foray into fanfic, so I apologize profusely for the utter *lack* of feedback), Renay Walker (I usually don't read adult fic, but the girl can write), and Anne Olsen. (Most of whose best stuff hasn't been published yet, but being as I am the evil nagging beta I've read it all and it rocks. *g*) Which is mostly the crew at Alternate Realities, so I guess you all know why I'm on this list. I also go *way* out of my way to read two Xmen authors (and I'm completely out of my Xmen phase, so figure that out) Minisinoo (who is an unending supply of mind blowing plotting) and Jenn (who dragged me kicking and screaming into the fun world of slash fic). Do you have a website? (And if so, what's the URL) Why yes, I do. *g* And it's being redecorated at the moment, so I suggest avoiding anything but the TPfic page for the next few days. www.angelfire.com/scifi/amethystmaiden/tomorrowpeople.html Any other comments, suggestions or words of wisdom? Feedback is a wonderful thing. I must admit that I didn't start out as the most consistent reader, but I've realized since then that it's really the only thing that keeps writers writing, especially on lists like this whose general purpose is to generate opinions. And yes, I do have a Greek mythology hang up. ^_^ > Favorite Fan Fiction Fandoms? Oh, lord there are so many but here goes: Buffy, the Vampire Slayer Angel The Pretender VR.5 The Tomorrow People Highlander Gundam Wing Ronin Warriors Ranma 1/2 Rurouni Kenshin Shojou Kakumei Utena (Revolutionary Girl Utena) > Favorite Characters? Again, too many. Best to tackle this by fandoms. Buffy, the Vampire Slayer: Faith. Hands down, Faith is my favorite BtVS character. I'm also fond of Spike, Tara, Oz, Giles, and on occasion, Buffy herself. Angel: Lorne. LOL. Any demon/man who can make Angel sing 'Mandy' is deservedly a favorite character. Also Wesley--he's come a long way since his early days on Buffy (and has thankfully become less annoying). The Pretender: Miss Parker and Jarod. The Tomorrow People: Jade Weston. I feel cheated because the series ended before we could really see her develop. Of course that might be why I spend so much time and attention on her in my fics. Highlander: Methos and Connor MacLeod. Don't talk to me about Duncan. I saw the movies first, so Connor has a special place in my heart. Never watch a character death when you have the 'flu btw... I made that mistake with 'Endgame' and bawled like a baby for twenty minutes. Gundam Wing: Duo Maxwell and Heero Yuy. Gee... Looking at what I write for that fandom, I bet you'd never have guessed. *Refrains from mentioning all those posters on my walls...* :P Ronin Warriors/Yoridien Samurai Troopers: Seiji (Sage), and Touma (Rowen). Ranma 1/2: Ryoga/P-Chan and Ukyo. Rurouni Kenshin: Himura Kenshin and Kamiya Kaoru. Again, looking at my story 'Testament', that's not a big surprise. ^_^ Utena: Utena and Juri Arisugawa. If I can ever bring my muse around, I'm writing an Utena fan fiction... We need more Juri stories in that fandom. > Do You Write Fan Fiction? Yes. In copious amounts. I just wish I could finish half of the stuff sitting on my hard drive. > Favorite Fandom to write in? That's a tough one. The main fandoms of the moment for me are: Buffy, Gundam Wing, and the Tomorrow People. I started writing fan fiction in the Tomorrow People and Highlander fandoms and have just moved around since then. I love crossovers and I'll crossover any show I think I can--mostly with any of the three above. Crossover types I've done? Tomorrow People/Highlander, Gundam Wing/Highlander, Gundam Wing/Kenshin, Buffy/Ronin Warriors, Tomorrow People/Ranma 1/2, Titanic/Highlander (and Buffy), Buffy/Angel/Tomorrow People, Kenshin/Gundam Wing, Utena/Tomorrow People... Er... You see what I mean about being a crossover junkie. I co-own three universes at the moment (all of which with Michele): Forever Tomorrow, Dark Horizons, and our as yet barely published, Titanic/Highlander 'verse. And of course, we're always hard at work... ^_- > Favorite Fan Fiction story(ies)? Oh boy... Hard one... Um.. let's see.. I really remember like Michele's Exoneration story for the Tomorrow People universe... Of course, I adore all of Chele's fics, so that's a no brainer. Shinigami's Basement, Digital, and Embrace the Night from the Gundam Wing fandom--all very nice. Rekka-chan's Chibi Troopers stories from the Ronin fandom are great. Mirai no Yakusoku by Ardeth in the Kenshin fandom is another nice, rather recent discovery. > Favorite Fan Fiction author? Michele. Probably my all-time, favorite fan author out there. I also enjoy the work of Anne Olsen, Alice in Stoneyland, Arigotimina, ClareySage, SteelSong, Shadow_Chaser, Rekka_Chan, and Alana Winters. Oh, the list is endless... It'd take days and days to make up. > Do you have a website? (And if so, what's the URL) Yep. It's called Elysia: www.angelfire.com/id2/avalon > Any other comments, suggestions or words of wisdom? Don't be afraid to try new things. Stories thrive on innovation. And don't let older members of a fandom frighten you off. I know I've had an email or two (and the names don't matter here) to chastise me for taking a different slant on a 'sainted' character. Not for changing the character, mind you but for making them a bit more human. Interpretation, that's what it's all about. I like new slants on old characters and plots...and I like reading those new slants. So don't be driven off from a particular fandom just because someone doesn't like your slant on things. Cordelia sighed as she turned to Gunn. "Funny thing about windows, they tend to let sunlight in. So asking Angel is out unless you want to scoop him up in the dust pan later. And I don't want to spend the day in the emergency room because Wesley overdid it and pulled his stitches again. That leaves you." Gunn started to hand the Windex and rag to her "Your arms broken?" "Cordelia is re-organizing the file system." Wesley emerged from his office. "Everything is still in a shambles from the move, and it's imperative that we have things in order as quickly as possible." "My job description says demon killer, not maid," Gunn muttered as he headed for the first dirty pane of glass. "So Wesley," Cordelia leaned back in her chair. "Do you want the good news or the bad?" Wesley sighed and eased himself into a chair of his own, wincing slightly as he did so. Getting shot in the stomach was *not* one of the most pleasant things he'd ever experienced. "I suppose we should start with the bad, since things can only get better from there." "Good philosophy! Ok, so the bad is ... no repair shop is willing to tackle a blood soaked keyboard." She smiled a little, trying to look apologetic. After all, it was her ex-friend who had made the mess. "And the good?" "David Navid stopped by this morning, just to check in or something. You know how lonely he gets. Anyway, when he saw what happened he offered to donate a brand new Pentium IV, to be delivered straight to our door later this afternoon!" Wesley's jaw almost hit the floor. "My word! That is considerably generous of him. But we couldn't possibly ..." "Don't you dare say we can't accept it!" Cordelia practically shouted. "You said yourself, we need to have this place up and running again ASAP. And in case you haven't noticed, computers are pretty much vital to the research mode." "I'm just glad you understand them." Angel came lumbering sleepily down the stairs, carefully avoiding both Gunn and the sunlight streaming through the windows. "I mean, I can get around on one, but the stuff you and Willow do is just beyond me." "Can't teach an old vampire new tricks." Gunn called from his place at the window. Angel nodded and headed straight for the coffee. "Something like that." "As long as you're up, get me some?" Cordelia turned back to her desk and the pile of papers that was waiting for her. Angel smiled slightly to himself as he poured Cordelia's coffee. She may have forgiven him for his fall from grace, but she still wasn't above making him do some of the scutt work around the office. As he handed the mug to Cordelia, her face suddenly contorted. "Vision!" Angel called as he caught the mug with one hand and kept his friend from falling off her chair with the other. Cordelia neither heard Angel's voice nor felt his hands supporting her. The vision bombarded her senses, tearing her away from this reality and throwing her into another. There was a dark alley, damp from the day's rain and reeking of rotten garbage. A young girl with a horrified expression, and a hooded creature chasing her. Cordelia could feel the creatures hot breath on her neck, hear the sobs and pleads of the child, and was forced to watch as he plunged his blade deep into the girl's chest. "Alley, girl ... monster," she managed to gasp as the familiar surroundings of the office began to become clear again. She was on the floor, as usual, with her three male companions kneeling beside her. "Don't know what it was ... hood or mask or something covered it's face. But it killed her ... she's just a kid!" That was all Angel needed to hear. He was on his feet and headed toward the door when Wesley stopped him. "And where do you think you're going?" "Um, to rescue the girl?" "First, we don't know where she is. And second," Wesley sighed and pointed toward the window. "Have you looked outside lately?" Although late in the afternoon, sun was still pouring through the windows. "Oh yeah." "It's okay, we have time." With Gunn's help, Cordelia managed to get back behind her desk and was searching through the drawers for some sort of pain killer. "Sunset isn't for an hour, and this was most definitely a night time attack. Besides, I think I have an idea of where we need to be." "Alright," Wesley took charge. "Gunn, you will accompany myself and Cordelia. We will attempt to track down this alley." "Um, what about me?" Angel asked. Wesley thought for a moment. "Watch the office, answer the phone, and if you get the chance, sweep the floor?" "You're enjoying this, aren't you?" Wesley didn't answer, simply walked out the door with Cordelia and Gunn in tow. "He's enjoying it." ________________________________________________________________ GET INTERNET ACCESS FROM JUNO! Juno offers FREE or PREMIUM Internet access for less! Join Juno today! Vendors and street performers on every corner, couriers on bikes weaving their way through the throng of pedestrians and cars, people talking about anything and everything as they walk, sometimes on cell phones, less often to the real live people walking next to them. But at twilight, everything changes. The hawkers pack up their wares, the business people go home to their families, and the night life begins. Young people cover themselves with less cloth than it takes to make a handkerchief and take to the streets in droves. The lights come on and the music begins, and for many it doesn't stop again until the rising of the sun. On the surface, it seems a blissful assistance. But what happened beyond the lights of the clubs and the smoke filled bars was another matter all together. Angel realized this all too well as he jumped from rooftop to rooftop, the quickest way he knew to reach the location from which Wesley had called him. "What do we know?" The Englishman jumped, then grimaced as the movement pulled at his wound. "Good gracious. Must you always sneak up on people like that?" Angel smiled slightly. "Part of my job description." "Well the good news is we think we've discovered the correct alley." "And the bad?" "Well, it's an extremely long alley," Wesley sighed. "There are several spots that might be the place Cordelia saw in her vision. Gunn and Cordelia have found a vantage point from which they can cover almost half the area. The plan is for us to do the same, and for whomever spots the girl first to call the others for backup. Hopefully we can all assemble before the attack begins." ~And if we don't there's a good possibility someone will wing up dead.~ But Angel kept his doubts to himself. Once he had made all the decisions around the office, but those days were over. It was Wesley's operation now. ~At least they kept my name on the door.~ Angel waited patiently as Wesley gingerly exited the car, and took a moderate pace as they started to walk through the dark alleyway. Although Wesley never complained, it was obvious that the man was still in a great deal of pain, and would be for quite some time. The vampire wracked his brain for something, anything he could say to his friend. He wished he could turn back the clock, go back to the days when things had been easier. Before Darla, before the darkness. Angel opened his mouth to speak, unsure of exactly what he would say but knowing he couldn't stay silent any longer. "Wesley, I ..." The silence was shattered by an ear-piercing cry of a child. "Oh my god," Wesley said, but Angel was already off and running. "Angel! Angel!" Unable to keep up, Wesley quickly used his cell phone to call Cordelia and Gunn. Meanwhile, Angel was within sight of the attack. The hooded creature was easily three times the size of the girl cowering before him, possibly more. As the shadowed shaped of the child squirmed in a desperate attempt to free herself the monster raised it's right hand, the twelve inch blade it contained winking in the yellow glow of the street lamps. With a primal growl and a final burst of speed, Angel threw himself at the girl's attacker. For the split second in which the creature was taken off guard, the vampire had the upper hand. The attacker collapsed to the ground under the force of Angel's blow. "Run!" In just the short time which it took Angel to shout the command to the girl, the beast was on its feet again. What had appeared to Cordelia to be some sort of hooded article of clothing was actually a cloaking spell of some kind. The creature had wrapped a small area of blackest night around itself, masking all his movements. A hand shot out and gripped Angel by the throat, lifting him off the ground before he had the chance to retaliate in any way. With its free hand, it used the dagger to tear through the flesh of Angel's stomach. Angel howled in pain. "Angel!" the vampire foggily heard Gunn call his name. With his last ounce of strength, he kicked the area where he supposed the hand with the dagger must be, grunting in satisfaction when the piece of metal clanked to the pavement. Unarmed and soon to be outnumbered, the creature dropped Angel as well. Before running off into the night, it retrieved the dagger and plunged it into Angel's side a second time. The pain was immense. No matter how many times Angel was stabbed or shot, he never ceased to be amazed by the burning, throbbing, strength-robbing power of pain. Eyes closed, Angel felt for the hilt of the dagger and attempted to pull it out. But the handle was slick with his blood, and he lacked the strength to complete the task. Soft, warm flesh caressed Angel's forehead. He opened his eyes, expecting to see Cordelia kneeling beside him. Instead it was the child. Her sea green eyes welled with tears still unshed; the ones which had already fallen exposing trails of pale freckled skin beneath dirt-coated cheeks. The fire in Angel's belly flared angrily as the girl wrenched the dagger from the wound, and Angel cried out. "Shh," she whispered softly as she placed one tiny hand over Angel's eyes, the other on the hole in his abdomen. Immediately a sense of calm filled Angel's soul, and a warmth spread throughout his limbs, as if the frozen blood in his veins had suddenly begun to thaw. *Thud* Was the girl pounding on his chest? Why? *Thud* No, the sensation was from the inside, so strong it threatened to split open his rib cage. *Thud* Angel's heart was beating! As soon as the realization was made, the muscle suddenly returned to its frozen state. All the warmth which had filled his body dissipated. Angel had been so pre-occupied with the movement of his heart that he hadn't even noticed his lungs filling with oxygen until they were sucked empty again, almost as if a vacuum hose had been inserted into his throat. The air crackled with electricity. Suddenly, Angel found himself sitting upright. The small girl lay across his lap, pale and seemingly lifeless. He gingerly felt her neck, sighing with relief when he realized that the girl had not passed away. "Angel? What happened?" Angel was too stunned to answer Cordelia's question. There would be time for answers later. Instead he stood, wrapped the girl in his coat for warmth, and carried her to back to his car. ________________________________________________________________ GET INTERNET ACCESS FROM JUNO! This forum is a gathering place for fans across the board to meet and talk about their favorite television shows and to share fan fiction. It's a place to meet others who share your interests, and discover that hey, you really, really are not alone. The Forum has several different message boards within it, including but not limited to Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Tomorrow People, Anime and Babylon 5. There is also a section for the discussion and posting of fan fiction, and a little corner dedicated to original universes. This forum is in its infancy, so you are encouraged (begged, cajoled and pleaded with as well) to drop by and introduce yourself and start a conversation. (Or two, or three, or four, we're not all that picky.) From now until November 1, the forum will be in a "probationary" stage while I make the determination of whether or not it has enough popularity and interest to make it worth investing actual cash and capital into. Until that decision is made, you will unfortunately have to suffer through the pop up ads and the ads that appear at the bottom of the forum. Currently, the forum is looking for moderators for various sections of the board. With only three of us on board, we are stretched pretty thin and we would love it if someone else would be interested in taking on some moderation duties. (For more information about moderation or to offer your services as moderator or suggest a general area that is not represented on the forum currently, please contact me PRIVATELY OFF LIST at mbumbarger@hotmail.com). The URL of the forum is again: http://pub39.ezboard.com/balternaterealities95909. (AOL users, click here: The Alternate Realities Forum.) In upcoming days, the forum will also be linked from the Alternate Realities, Shadows & Light, and Elysia web sites. If you have any questions about the boards, when you get there make your first stop at the "Concierge." Thank you, The List Mom ********************************************** Michele B. Millie = looked up at Megabyte to see his reaction to her latest comment, and saw = instead a flash of bright light as he teleported and left the room. "Millie one, Megabyte zero," she noted to herself with satisfaction. = Even though her brother was a Tomorrow Person, and she wasn't, it = certainly didn't interfere with the number of arguments she still = managed to win. Megabyte still remembered all too well = the lecture he and his dad had got from his mom when she had = accidentally found out about his powers and the Tomorrow People. An = erupting volcano had nothing on Caroline Damon when she had found out = how long they had kept the information from her.=20 "It doesn't mean you shouldn't respect her rules though, does it?" Megabyte decided there was no way he was going down that road, or get = his father started on it either. "So when were you going to tell me about this?" He demanded. The redhead = threw the brochure down on his father's desk, narrowly missing landing = it in the puddle of upset coffee as he did so. Damon looked closely at the paper in front of him. "Sunnydale," he = commented. "Oh yes, that." "Yeah, that. The fact that Millie seems to think we're moving and I = don't know anything about it. That." "Well, for starters, I seem to remember you promising to be here for = dinner one night last week and you never showed." "I was busy, okay?"=20 "Too busy to spend time with your family and bother to find out that = things were happening to other members of this household besides = yourself you mean?" Megabyte opened his mouth to reply to his father's accusation and = stopped himself just in time. He didn't think the comment 'well I was = planning to be here but that's the night Ami went missing and got soul = bonded to a vampire' would go down particularly well with his dad at the = moment. "I told you I was busy," he repeated. Geez that sounds lame. If I was = Dad, I wouldn't buy it either. General Damon continued, mentally translating what his son had just = said. "In other words you were somewhere you shouldn't probably getting = into trouble as usual. Your mother worries since she found out about you = being a Tomorrow Person, you know. It wouldn't hurt you to touch base = once in a while and let her know what's going on." "Yeah right, and what about all those years she was never home?" = Megabyte retorted. "She finds out I'm a Tomorrow Person and suddenly = she's all concerned about my whereabouts." His father cut him off before he could say anything else. "Well she = knows now and she's trying to make up for all the time she wasn't here. = Be fair, Megabyte, she's been hit with quite a shock here. It's not = everyday you find out that your son can teleport and has these powers = because he suddenly appears out of thin air in front of you." "That wasn't my fault. I mean how was I to know she was in your office = talking to you when I teleported in. Beats me why she picked that day, = of all days to decide to be home. She's *never * home. Besides," he = continued. " She hasn't said much to me." Damon looked over at the sofa in his office and back at his son. "No she = hasn't said much to *you *" Doing time on the sofa again? Yeah that sounds right, thought Megabyte = to himself. Typical Mom reaction. Spends the first couple of days = worrying, and doing her whole Terminator on the warpath imitation, and = then goes back to the 'he'll grow out of it if I ignore it' attitude = she'd taken with everything else that had ever happened with Millie and = himself. She'd been the same way when he'd started getting into = computers he remembered. Though of course that was fairly harmless, at = least from her point of view. Lucky for him, he supposed she didn't know = the full scope of what exactly he had been up to hacking wise lately. = Must get back into that Gate program sometime soon too. "Megabyte are you listening to a word I'm saying?" Damon's question shook Megabyte out of his reverie. "Yeah sure Dad. = Er..what did you say again?" "I said this move will be good for the whole family. Your Mom is hoping = to get a position at Sunnydale U and." "Yeah right. If we have to go back to the States, why can't we move back = to Vermont? After all I have friends there, and what about all the = friends I have here?" Damon sighed. "Right Marmaduke." He ticked off the names of Megabyte's = closest friends on his hand. "Adam, Ami, Kevin and Jade. Spot the = connection?" "Connection?" Megabyte could see where his dad was going and decided to = play dumb. "They're all Tomorrow People like you. They can teleport like you. = What's it going to matter where you live? They're still going to drag = you into trouble. Or should that be you dragging them into trouble? = These days I'm never sure." "Hey," Megabyte opened his mouth to protest. "A teenager is supposed to = be able to hang out with his friends and get into trouble. That's part = of the deal." "Not when that deal involves all the danger that you kids seem to get = yourselves into, it doesn't. I'm hoping that this move to Sunnydale will = stop a lot of this. After all according to what I've heard, it's a nice = quiet town where nothing much happens. Not like London, where you guys = seem to make a habit of stumbling across mad scientists and the like = every five minutes." "Quiet and boring you mean? Give me a break, Dad." Megabyte ran his eyes = over the brochures he'd thrown on the desk. "One nightclub, one movie = theatre. C'mon it's a nowhere town in California. What are you trying to = do to me here?"=20 Damon smiled and Megabyte groaned to himself. Whenever his dad had that = look it usually meant he wouldn't like what was coming. "Well for one thing, you mother and I thought you could take some = classes at Sunnydale U. We weren't very impressed with the last year you = spent at school. Sometimes you have to put in some effort to get = somewhere in life you know." "If you mean work all day and night so that your kids never see you, = you've got that right," Megabyte muttered under his breath. "What was that?" "Nothing, Dad, nothing. It wasn't my fault my grades slipped. I was = sorta busy with Tomorrow People stuff. Someone's gotta do the whole = saving the world thing." Megabyte could see his dad wasn't buying it. He = tried another track, flipping through the brochure for more ammo. "Look at the number of cemeteries in this place. Hey maybe all the other = parents are wiping their kids out with boredom and study, like you're = planning to do to me." He shrugged. "Hey Dad, be reasonable. I can't do = everything. Other kids don't have the whole TP gig to deal with = remember?" "Adam manages to do both. He was showing me some of the courses he was = going to take at Sydney University this semester. If he can make the = effort, I can't see why you can't." "Well, I'm not Adam, okay. And he doesn't have you expecting him to live = up to your standards all the time." Megabyte regretted the comment as = soon as it was out of his mouth. Still it served his dad right. He = wasn't Adam and he was never going to be. At least not in this lifetime. "Besides," he continued. "You've only really started taking an interest = in my welfare since I became a Tomorrow Person. Remember last year when = I disappeared for three days? How long did it take you to notice I'd = gone? One day, maybe two?" "That's not a fair comment and you know it. It's not my fault if my job = takes me out of the country and something happens to you while I'm gone. = I know I've made some mistakes in the past Megabyte, but we're talking = about now. We've had this conversation before, remember?" Damon didn't = look very impressed with his son's last comment.=20 "Yeah right Dad. I'm trying to be a good parent now, yadda, yadda, = yadda. I've heard it all before, okay." "It's still true Megabyte. Both for me and for your mother." Megabyte snorted. "Yeah right Dad. It might be nice if you just let me = know what's going on round here for a change." "Well it might be nice if you're actually around to tell for a change. I = seem to remember telling you to stay home the Saturday before last too. = What happened to that promise? Don't you think it's about time you = started listening to me and your mom and staying home occasionally?" "I had things I had to do." Megabyte rolled his eyes. "Don't tell me, = you're going to try and ground me now? I'd like to see you try." He = stood up and looked his father straight in the eye.=20 "I didn't say that, but now you mention it." "Yeah right Dad. That's your answer to everything isn't it? You do = something I don't like and you make like it's my fault." "Megabyte." Megabyte threw up his arms in disgust. "I give up. There's no talking to = you is there?" "Megabyte." his father started to say again. "Don't be childish." "Yeah right Dad." Megabyte picked up the Sunnydale brochure off the desk = and headed for the door. "Looks as though I'd better go read up about = this hell hole of boredom you're making me move to." He headed towards = the door, and suddenly grinned. "Oh yeah, about that whole grounding = thing?" As he initiated the teleport Megabyte noted with satisfaction the look = on his father's face as he vanished. "Might have something to do with the fact you’re never here." = Millie looked=20 up at Megabyte to see his reaction to her latest comment, and saw = instead a=20 flash of bright light as he teleported and left the room.

"Millie one, Megabyte zero," she noted to herself with satisfaction. = Even=20 though her brother was a Tomorrow Person, and she wasn’t, it = certainly didn’t=20 interfere with the number of arguments she still managed to win. In fact = her=20 knowledge of what he was had been handy in getting him to do a few = things for=20 her in return for her not telling their mother. That was, of course = until their=20 mother had found out anyway.

Millie grinned at the memory of her mom’s reaction to that = piece of news, as=20 she wandered towards the kitchen. As she passed her father’s = study, she heard=20 raised voices. Okay, now at least she knew where Megabyte had gone when = he had=20 disappeared. She paused by the door, wondering whether to do a bit of=20 eavesdropping and decided against it. Judging by what was being said, it = was=20 time to do some disappearing of her own…

****************

Megabyte materialised in front of his father’s desk, waving the = ‘Welcome to=20 Sunnydale’ brochure in his hand.

General William Damon looked down at the coffee he’d spilled = over his desk=20 and sighed, reaching for the cloth his wife had insisted he keep in his = bottom=20 drawer. At least these days he didn’t have to keep coming up with = excuses for=20 why he was so accident prone. "Don’t you ever knock?" he = complained. "Some=20 people in this house would like it if you used the front door and = entered rooms=20 the traditional way you know."

"Well Mom’s not here, is she?" Megabyte still remembered all = too well the=20 lecture he and his dad had got from his mom when she had accidentally = found out=20 about his powers and the Tomorrow People. An erupting volcano had = nothing on=20 Caroline Damon when she had found out how long they had kept the = information=20 from her.

"It doesn’t mean you shouldn’t respect her rules though, = does it?"

Megabyte decided there was no way he was going down that road, or get = his=20 father started on it either.

"So when were you going to tell me about this?" He demanded. The = redhead=20 threw the brochure down on his father’s desk, narrowly missing = landing it in the=20 puddle of upset coffee as he did so.

Damon looked closely at the paper in front of him. "Sunnydale," he = commented.=20 "Oh yes, that."

"Yeah, that. The fact that Millie seems to think we’re moving = and I don’t=20 know anything about it. That."

"Well, for starters, I seem to remember you promising to be here for = dinner=20 one night last week and you never showed."

"I was busy, okay?"

"Too busy to spend time with your family and bother to find out that = things=20 were happening to other members of this household besides yourself you=20 mean?"

Megabyte opened his mouth to reply to his father’s accusation = and stopped=20 himself just in time. He didn’t think the comment ‘well I = was planning to be=20 here but that’s the night Ami went missing and got soul bonded to = a vampire’=20 would go down particularly well with his dad at the moment.

"I told you I was busy," he repeated. Geez that sounds lame. If I was = Dad, I=20 wouldn’t buy it either.

General Damon continued, mentally translating what his son had just = said. "In=20 other words you were somewhere you shouldn’t probably getting into = trouble as=20 usual. Your mother worries since she found out about you being a = Tomorrow=20 Person, you know. It wouldn’t hurt you to touch base once in a = while and let her=20 know what’s going on."

"Yeah right, and what about all those years she was never home?" = Megabyte=20 retorted. "She finds out I’m a Tomorrow Person and suddenly = she’s all concerned=20 about my whereabouts…"

His father cut him off before he could say anything else. "Well she = knows now=20 and she’s trying to make up for all the time she wasn’t = here. Be fair, Megabyte,=20 she’s been hit with quite a shock here. It’s not everyday = you find out that your=20 son can teleport and has these powers because he suddenly appears out of = thin=20 air in front of you."

"That wasn’t my fault. I mean how was I to know she was in your = office=20 talking to you when I teleported in. Beats me why she picked that day, = of all=20 days to decide to be home. She’s *never * home. Besides," he = continued. " She=20 hasn’t said much to me."

Damon looked over at the sofa in his office and back at his son. "No = she=20 hasn’t said much to *you *"

Doing time on the sofa again? Yeah that sounds right, thought = Megabyte to=20 himself. Typical Mom reaction. Spends the first couple of days worrying, = and=20 doing her whole Terminator on the warpath imitation, and then goes back = to the=20 ‘he’ll grow out of it if I ignore it’ attitude = she’d taken with everything else=20 that had ever happened with Millie and himself. She’d been the = same way when=20 he’d started getting into computers he remembered. Though of = course that was=20 fairly harmless, at least from her point of view. Lucky for him, he = supposed she=20 didn’t know the full scope of what exactly he had been up to = hacking wise=20 lately. Must get back into that Gate program sometime soon too.

"Megabyte are you listening to a word I’m saying?"

Damon’s question shook Megabyte out of his reverie. "Yeah sure = Dad. Er….what=20 did you say again?"

"I said this move will be good for the whole family. Your Mom is = hoping to=20 get a position at Sunnydale U and…"

"Yeah right. If we have to go back to the States, why can’t we = move back to=20 Vermont? After all I have friends there, and what about all the friends = I have=20 here?"

Damon sighed. "Right Marmaduke." He ticked off the names of = Megabyte’s=20 closest friends on his hand. "Adam, Ami, Kevin and Jade. Spot the=20 connection?"

"Connection?" Megabyte could see where his dad was going and decided = to play=20 dumb.

"They’re all Tomorrow People like you. They can teleport like = you. What’s it=20 going to matter where you live? They’re still going to drag you = into trouble. Or=20 should that be you dragging them into trouble? These days I’m = never sure."

"Hey," Megabyte opened his mouth to protest. "A teenager is supposed = to be=20 able to hang out with his friends and get into trouble. That’s = part of the=20 deal."

"Not when that deal involves all the danger that you kids seem to get = yourselves into, it doesn’t. I’m hoping that this move to = Sunnydale will stop a=20 lot of this. After all according to what I’ve heard, it’s a = nice quiet town=20 where nothing much happens. Not like London, where you guys seem to make = a habit=20 of stumbling across mad scientists and the like every five minutes."

"Quiet and boring you mean? Give me a break, Dad." Megabyte ran his = eyes over=20 the brochures he’d thrown on the desk. "One nightclub, one movie = theatre. C’mon=20 it’s a nowhere town in California. What are you trying to do to me = here?"

Damon smiled and Megabyte groaned to himself. Whenever his dad had = that look=20 it usually meant he wouldn’t like what was coming.

"Well for one thing, you mother and I thought you could take some = classes at=20 Sunnydale U. We weren’t very impressed with the last year you = spent at school.=20 Sometimes you have to put in some effort to get somewhere in life you = know."

"If you mean work all day and night so that your kids never see you, = you’ve=20 got that right," Megabyte muttered under his breath.

"What was that?"

"Nothing, Dad, nothing. It wasn’t my fault my grades slipped. I = was sorta=20 busy with Tomorrow People stuff. Someone’s gotta do the whole = saving the world=20 thing." Megabyte could see his dad wasn’t buying it. He tried = another track,=20 flipping through the brochure for more ammo.

"Look at the number of cemeteries in this place. Hey maybe all the = other=20 parents are wiping their kids out with boredom and study, like = you’re planning=20 to do to me." He shrugged. "Hey Dad, be reasonable. I can’t do = everything. Other=20 kids don’t have the whole TP gig to deal with remember?"

"Adam manages to do both. He was showing me some of the courses he = was going=20 to take at Sydney University this semester. If he can make the effort, I = can’t=20 see why you can’t."

"Well, I’m not Adam, okay. And he doesn’t have you = expecting him to live up=20 to your standards all the time." Megabyte regretted the comment as soon = as it=20 was out of his mouth. Still it served his dad right. He wasn’t = Adam and he was=20 never going to be. At least not in this lifetime.

"Besides," he continued. "You’ve only really started taking an = interest in my=20 welfare since I became a Tomorrow Person. Remember last year when I = disappeared=20 for three days? How long did it take you to notice I’d gone? One = day, maybe=20 two?"

"That’s not a fair comment and you know it. It’s not my = fault if my job takes=20 me out of the country and something happens to you while I’m gone. = I know I’ve=20 made some mistakes in the past Megabyte, but we’re talking about = now. We’ve had=20 this conversation before, remember?" Damon didn’t look very = impressed with his=20 son’s last comment.

"Yeah right Dad. I’m trying to be a good parent now, yadda, = yadda, yadda.=20 I’ve heard it all before, okay."

"It’s still true Megabyte. Both for me and for your = mother."

Megabyte snorted. "Yeah right Dad. It might be nice if you just let = me know=20 what’s going on round here for a change."

"Well it might be nice if you’re actually around to tell for a = change. I seem=20 to remember telling you to stay home the Saturday before last too. What = happened=20 to that promise? Don’t you think it’s about time you started = listening to me and=20 your mom and staying home occasionally?"

"I had things I had to do." Megabyte rolled his eyes. "Don’t = tell me, you’re=20 going to try and ground me now? I’d like to see you try." He stood = up and looked=20 his father straight in the eye.

"I didn’t say that, but now you mention it…"

"Yeah right Dad. That’s your answer to everything isn’t = it? You do something=20 I don’t like and you make like it’s my fault."

"Megabyte…"

Megabyte threw up his arms in disgust. "I give up. There’s no = talking to you=20 is there?"

"Megabyte…" his father started to say again. "Don’t be = childish."

"Yeah right Dad." Megabyte picked up the Sunnydale brochure off the = desk and=20 headed for the door. "Looks as though I’d better go read up about = this hell hole=20 of boredom you’re making me move to." He headed towards the door, = and suddenly=20 grinned. "Oh yeah, about that whole grounding thing?"

As he initiated the teleport Megabyte noted with satisfaction the = look on his=20 father’s face as he vanished. Parents!

Megabyte seemed to stop and think, before continuing. "Let’s = just say that=20 all that stuff about vampires is real. I know, I’ve met one. = There’s a lot of=20 really nasty stuff out there, Kenny, really nasty stuff." He shuddered = as though=20 remembering a past experience.

Kenny opened his mouth to ask another question. Obviously he’d = stumbled over=20 something big here, something he’d never dreamed really even = existed.=20 "Megabyte," he started to ask, and then noticed the Tomorrow Person = seemed to be=20 miles away. It was almost as though his mind was somewhere else. His = suspicions=20 were confirmed when his friend turned to him, a worried expression on = his=20 face.

"Sorry Kenny I’m going to have to go. Something’s come = up."

"Were you, you know, talking to someone telepathically just = then?"

"Yeah. Sorry to cut you short but I’ll see you before the move, = okay?" With=20 that Megabyte closed his eyes, there was a flash of white light and = Kenny was=20 left staring at the spot the redhead had just been standing.

Just another average day in the life of a Tomorrow Person, he thought = to=20 himself. In some ways he envied the Tomorrow People, but in other ways = he=20 definitely didn’t. Being caught up in all the bad stuff going down = in the world=20 must be really hard.

Kenny smiled to himself. Maybe this move to Sunnydale was a good idea = after=20 all. With it being such a small town and all, at least his friend would = be away=20 from all that vampire stuff. Yeah Sunnydale might be just what Megabyte = and rest=20 of the Tomorrow People needed.
