I&= #146;m looking for company on a ride around the Great Salt Lake after the = monthly meeting in Logan on Saturday, June 12. What I have in mind is leaving Loga= n headed for Snowville to fuel. Then, heading south on dirt roads along the = west shore of the Great Salt Lake to Lakeside, then continuing south on dirt an= d paved roads to I-80 west of Salt Lake City. From Logan, it’s approxim= ately 65 miles to Snowville, another 65 miles to Lakeside, 42 miles to I-80, and 60= miles to SLC.

Th= e west desert is of interest for natural and human historical reasons. We would pass nearby the Golden Spike National Monument where the transcontinental railroads were joined. We then go through Locomotive Springs, where the steam engines picked up water, Kelton, a ghost town whe= re ranchers used to bring their livestock for transport to market (which made= settlement of this part of the west possible at all), thence south along t= he east side of the Hogup mountains, with glimpses of islands critical to American= White Pelicans and other birds for rookeries.

Re= aching the present Union Pacific railroad tracks we will be near the Newfoundland Mountains, used by early miners, then head east along the tracks to Lakeside, where Utah spent $60 million to install pumps to lower= the Great Salt Lake in the 1980s to prevent flooding the mineral extraction companies on the east side of the lake. The last miles before reaching I-8= 0 skirt one of the U.S. Air Force testing ranges. This section is also where= the Donner Party and others crossed the Great Salt Lake desert in the mid-1800= s sighting on Pilot Peak to guide them, before their tragic encounter with t= he snows of the Sierras.

Th= is area is quite remote, so it’d be safest to do it with a couple of = other riders. It should be about an hour to Snowville, 3-4 hours to I-80, and another ho= ur to SLC.

A leisurely day Wednesday the 14th on scenic hiway 12 (Lewis & Clarke route) and the Nez Pierce National Mnt, and on to Lewiston, Idaho, where there is the BMW BBQ for $5 that evening 5:00 - 7:00 pm, at Hells Gate State Park. Camp again somewhere in the vicinity, or maybe go another couple of hours (110 miles or so into Spokane) that evening??? At latest plan on arriving at rally site mid-morning Thursday the 15th. I usually travel solo, and wouldn't want to hold anyone up (I don't travel at lightening speeds, and do stop to take photos now and then) neither would I want to wait too much for others.
