So, my review: there were a lot of little things I liked about this episode. Xander's concern for Willow at the beginning (okay so it wasn't enough to satisfy me but it was a start), Giles finally starting to have some kind of relationship with an *adult* (I want to see if that computer teacher comes back in another episode) and the great ending when all three friends are just sitting there in a very self-deprecatory mood. I loved the implied homage to VR5: the kid in the library at the beginning who said "virtual reality is the only way to be truly alive" or something like that. Worst points: the very cheesy special effects...and is Sunnydale High a lot less crowded than it seems, or does everyone go around with a paper beg over their heads -- why was Buffy totally alone in the locker room, computer lab, and why was she the only one to notice that the "third most important industry" in Sunnydale was showwing some action? And about next week's episode...isn't the "evil/possessed ventriloquist dummy" about the most over-used plot in the horror genre? Sorry if I'm being too nit-picky...it's late & these things bug me. Hi....I'm a newbie to this list but I figured I'm a big enough fan to join a mailing list about a show that's been on for like two months. It's a great show (although I never got to see the ENTIRE first episode). Anyway, about tonite's show, great as usual! I really enjoyed the thought of demons invading the internet...and it was a good show that sortta based itself around Willow. I just love how this show doesn't revolve around vampires all the time. It gives it great variety, and doing a show about demons in cyberspace was REAL variety. Yep, my favorite part would have to be the end where they remenisce about their love life! "Virtual Reality Is Real" was VR.5's tag line. My favorite homage was when Giles asked about uploading a virus. "You've seen too many movies!" I love it when someone has the guts to put down the worst film of 1996. > Worst points: the very > cheesy special effects... I didn't think they were cheesy. I think, if I wanted to be nit-picky, that the scanner Willow was using was a bit much - almost as bad as the perceived problem the acoustic modem was on VR.5. (Of course, there we got an explanation as to why the modem wasn't a hinderance. Here we saw Willow scanning a page and her hand deviating from a straight line as she scanned making it very difficult for the computer to patch together images, but. . . ) > Buffy totally alone in the locker room, It was after school, during gym class, or during any of the other million times per day the locker is empty. > computer lab, Only the geeks go there. Shouldn't this been called "I Robot -- You Willow"? I know it was a take off on Tarzan, but I think my title is more to the point, and the take off would've been still intact). I have a new fave ep! This was excellent (I think I need to start finding some new adjectives, can anyone say thesaurus?) , albeit it struck a bit to home at times. This is shorter then some of my other reviews, *Sonja thinks she hears the sound of cheers coming from the general direction of the Buffy list!* Giles and Ms. Calendar - I like this new character - Ms. Calendar (any ideas on who plays her? She reminded me of Karen Duffy at times, but I don't think it's her), I hope she stays around for awhile, no becoming lunch please! She plays the perfect foil for Giles, computers vs. books, each have their place and each of them trying to make the other see why what they love is better. She got off some great lines: Giles - I'll be back in the Middle Ages. Ms. Calendar - Did you ever leave? The glares that Giles gave her were priceless, pretty much on par with those he gives Buffy at times :D It's nice to see Giles interacting with other adults, esp. someone who seems to know things about supernatural like he does, he seemed pleasantly surprised to find out she did. Almost like Xander and Willow knowing that Buffy is the Slayer. Hmm...now we have the possibility of two love interests (if not on the show, in fan fic), Joyce - Buffy's somewhat clueless mother, or Ms. Calendar, a techopagan who prefers computers over books, hey you know the saying - "opposites attract", both are very opposite of Giles in certain ways. She calls him Rupert, how familiar! If I was stuck with Rupert as a first name, I would prefer to be called by my last name. Love his new nickname though - "Snobby" *giggle*. Giles is so sexy when he gets to put some passion into what he's doing, like casting counter spells (this ep and "The Witch"). Wonder if he'll ever figure out where she dangles the "corkscrew"? Joining the GASPers & More Things to Keep: If you want to join the Giles' Appreciation Society Panters email me and I'll send you info on how to join or choose something from below and email me and I'll send you the rest of the directions. Things Left to Keep: Clipboard (seen in "The Pack") File Cabinet (seen in "Never Kill a Boy...") Radio - new (Seen in "I, Robot -- You Jane") Sugar Bowl from the tea set (seen in "Never Kill a Boy...") Tie Clip - new (seen in "I, Robot -- You Jane") Time Life Books (seen in "Welcome to the Hell Mouth) Books vs. Computers - I have to agree with Giles on some points and Ms. Calendar's on others. I spend a good deal of time on the net, and not as much time reading as I used to. I've learned alot from the internet, made many friends and wouldn't give any of that up for the world but I have also learned alot from reading, which I wouldn't give up either. I am trying to get back to reading, right now I'm sludging my way through a book on Ivan the Terrible, and murdering the Russian names while I'm at it (is that a crime? It should be! ;D). Willow and Online Romance - Okay this one struck close to home. I had a semi-relationship with a guy online, and we spent hours talking to each other, I would have to force myself to go to bed so I could go to school (college) the next day. He lived in NJ and came to visit me after my 22nd b-day, the relationship didn't work and I hear he and someone else from the channel we used to frequent got together (offline). Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't, in Willow's case - it didn't big time! Warning from someone who's been there - Just be Careful! High Mortality - I think eventually they are going to have to have a ep dealing with all the on campus deaths this show has. There should be some kind of warning for all perspective students - Attending this school could be hazardous to your health. Well like I said this was going to be short. Since it's been awhile since we had a new ep., I think I fell out of writing these every Mon., hopefully next week I'll have more to say *Sonja now thinks she hears the collective groan coming from the general direction of the Buffy list!" You will be there in my heart. .7 That is all that I can do and I'll remember. .8 .9 Your eyes, that always make me shiver 10 Now they are closed, they can sometimes twitch a little... 11 and your body, have it all for an hour... 12 It's forever, the speed and the power. 13 14 I'll remember you. You will be there in my heart. 15 And I'll remember you. 16 That is all that I can do, but I'll remember. My changes based on closed-captioning: Line 2: there are two "do they know" phrases, and I can't make out the first one. Only the second one is captioned. Lines 2b and 2c inserted, first part of line 3 is line 2c now. Line 9: changed "they'd" to "that." Line 10: changed first part. Line 11: changed last part. Line 12: totally changed. Closed-captioning said "It's forever" instead of "It sent me to heaven," but it *really* does not sound like that to me. I think you're version is closer. However, I am pretty confident that "the speed and the power" is correct as it was captioned and sounds right to me. Nothing else changed. Either the closed-captioning didn't have that part, or the closed-captioning confirmed what you have. I Robot You Jane Spoiler Space S P O I L E R S P A C E S C R E E N Questions for the VCR-poised masses: How did the book end up getting scanned? I remember Buffy pulling it out of the box, Giles saying something about how he'd get to it later, then Buffy saying something about 'putting it on Willow's pile'. Was that Buffy not having paid attention to what Giles said, or Buffy assuming that Willow could take care of anything Giles could take care of? Can someone correct this quote for me? I'm doing this from memory, and am sure to have misquoted somewhat: W: The first boy who shows a real interest in me, and he turns out to be a demon robot! What does that say about me? B: It doesn't say anything about you. W: I thought I was really falling... B: Hey, girl, the only boy I've had the hots for since I got here turned out to be a vampire. X: And the teacher I had a crush on? A praying mantis! W: I guess so... X: That's the joy of living on the hellmouth. B: Lets face it. None of us are ever going to have a normal, healthy relationship. X: We're doomed. *hollow laughter, and sad looks* And last but not least: So how _did_ that corkscrew end up among Giles' books? Calendar took it off after lighting the candles, and right before she sits in front of the Mac (not the PC! not the PC! woohoo Dinosaurs, arent they !) I think I saw her reaching for her ear. This ep was STELLAR GELLAR! *finds a flower-power thesaurus amongst Cagey's Library* but my fav is still "The Pack"... the suspense just wasn't here in "IR-YJ". Someone on IChat mentioned a similarity with 2001's psycho computer, Hal 9000. Hal was spooky cuz his voice was perfect human speech. Ol' boy Morloch was trying to instill terror thru a tinkly 2.5 inch speaker... (Macs and everything except PC's are cool -- my PC crashes way too many times). Unlike CRQ's security cameras, Hal's ominous Red Eye was totally phat... hrm 2001 isn't too far off either.... I liked his ruthlessness tho. Morloch- "To see again, to feel again... [crick] to kill again..." [Willow gasping in disbelief] M: You don't love me? "too bad" (the suspense here was nice ;) Is it Morloch or Moloch? I thought it was Morloch. I really thought Willow would be like totally victimized like in "The Pack" -- I'm glad she's learned more confidence especially when wielding a nice heavy fire extinguisher (wanna Keep this?) W: "I don't think we can work out this relationship *thonk*" Anyone with a VCR wanna analyze Willow's room? How about that face/poster in her room? Was there an aquarium in there? Pennant? ObBuffy: Upon Buffy uncovering the Gates of the Hellmouth, a HUGE carnosaur type threatens Sunnydale with grisly teeth, and in a high-falsetto voice begins an unGodly evil chant: "I, luv you -- You, luv me..." or maybe the -Sliders-osaur slides in for a visit -- Now here's a multi-$$ movie to rip on -and- big purple dino x-overs are 'Net canon! /---------------------------------------------------------------------\ | Hendu | hendu@usa.net | http://www.personal.psu.edu/hxn106 | | WOWIE! Pretty much enough, 13I'd hope. Totally Unfocused First Reaction: Cooooooool. Alyson did a terrif job with her episode; very sweet and happy, brave and confused, hurt and depressed. Not a boring or cliched reaction in the lot. Much more hurt than angry, when Buffy tried to express her concern about Malcolm, which is consistent with Willow's character. *Wonderful* sad hurt look when Malcolm turned out not to be what she'd hoped for. The Xander bits were priceless. Must re-watch for various very hysterical lines.... loved him and Buffy spazzing over Willow's new e-mail boyfriend at the very beginning. A fun side to their friendship, that both of them are so hyper-reactive and egg each other on. And the bit where he said "I got to hit someone!" had me ROTFL. *Interesting*... interaction between Giles and Miss... what's-her-name. I'm afraid I'm mentally blocking her actual appellation. Sorry! Anyway. Very interesting, valid conversations about Giles' technophobia and its sources. Loved the bit about why he likes books better than computers; and I completely freaked for the space of the commercial, when I believed that she had been undermined by Molock. Ahhhhh! Don't do that to me! Heart attack time! Giles is really getting into this Grand Master Mage bit, isn't it? On him it works, though, so.... But, ummm, did anyone else have Star Trek Next Gen flashbacks when he said "Kahless with a K"? (It's just you, Christina, never mind...) Don't know if I want her to come back or not. Mixed feelings. Enough to make me misplace pronouns... mmmmmm.... Hmmmmmmm. Buffy, of course, was in great form; I want those sunglasses, and that dippy-silly-tacky trenchcoat. Really liked how she decided she could try to handle this on her own, when Giles couldn't point her in any particular direction. Loved her "how is my hair?" question; and the use of her Slayer skills throughout the ep, without actually slaying, was quite good. I'm too dead to bring up questions of how-the-heck-did-Moloch-control-those - -guys' minds.... but I'm sure the rest of you have ideas. The depressed scene of "we're doomed" at the end was the funniest bit of romantic fatalism I have ever seen. Oh. And I now know what I am. :> Christina vqrw76a@prodigy.com Merc - PFWC - DueSer - TechnoPagan ------------------------------ End of buffy Digest V1 #40 ************************** To subscribe to buffy Digest, send the command: subscribe buffy-digest in the body of a message to "majordomo@xmission.com".
