If they are out of the money, then they will trade purely on speculation that the co will extend the expiration, which often does happen if the company needs money, as warrant exercise is a cheap way for a co to raise cash. They came out of my I've been following THQI for a while and it seems that the rise this week was because of the error made by First Call that earnings were going to come out on 2/4/98. Earnings will be released during the 3rd week of February, per Invester Relations, and expect a similar rise preceeding that as estimates are lower than what it will report. Estimates are for about 50 cents for the 4th qtr, which have been upgraded from 38 cents, and about 98 cents for the year. Sounds a little like the UPS strike, where the losers ended up being all the temp workers, who were not immediately rehired following the settlement, because mkt share had declined as a result of the strike. Of course, the savings to a co with high percent of temp workers is that often the cost of benefits is substantially less (and a temp worker can still work something like 30 or 35 hours a week regularly, and still be "temp"). But employee relations (and loyalty) tends to suffer with this kind of treatment, as does the experience level, product quality, etc. with the consequent long term effects. Comes at a point where one would expect only a temporary rest and not a significant turning point. OMQP - Dave, the "base" is really a long cup and handle "type" formation with a little 2 week "curl" for a handle, don't you think? I understand your point, however. Typically, too short a pause to foster much confidence. Here's why I risked it anyway. With the "M" coming on strong, and with the way this issue rushed up to form the right side of the cup, dried out the volume to just 20% ADV on Friday, it looked worth a shot just after the open at 23 1/4. I wouldn't typically feel comfortable with such a move since it violates entry point rules, but Connie Mack's lesson seemed to offer some confirmation we usually lack. With Connie Mack's slow stoch cross and 3/6/9 EMA ready to follow on Monday, it looked worthy of a low risk entry. Granted the volume after it passed the pivot point (24 to 24 1/2) was big enough to scare one away if you were considering or in fact made a traditional buy after it crossed the pivot. However, at 23 1/4, it was as low risk as you can get. I bought it right there. We'll see how it goes, it's experimental for me. But so far, using the slow stoch and 3/6/9 EMA is keeping me out of trouble and has me into a substantial gain for this young year.
