Thanks Tom for the info re the settlement date for the DEC/Compaq deal. Just wanting to see how much time I had to assess which might be the better deal-selling Digital before the settlement or taking the settlement and hoping Compaq share price to goes up. Right now it looks pretty close to even. Seems like if CPQ does a good job with the integration of Digital, share price would go up. DEC is trading at or above where I would expect it to be, considering the value of CPQ at this time. With the deal valued at $30 cash plus 0.94 shares of CPQ per share of DEC, and closing still months away, I would typically expect DEC to trade at a 5% or more discount to value. Thus, it is likely the only addl gain in the price of DEC will come from CPQ going up further. Worth noting it quickly recovered from the initial (and typical) selloff when it was announced. From all the commentary I have seen, the analysts seem to like the deal, altho it will take a lot of work to make it meet full potential. CPQ has some decent CS elements. RS 85, EPS 95, a/d C, Timeliness C, earnings growth rate 42%, last 4 qtrs earnings were up between 33% and over 50%, funds have 23%, and u/d is 1.1. I worded this poorly, what I meant to say is that typically the acquiring co (CPQ) goes down on the announcement while the acquired co (DEC) goes up. That happened in this case, however CPQ reversed the next day and moved higher since, which is not typical and I believe reflects how the deal (as well as CPQ itself) is being viewed. >the only addl gain in the price of DEC will come from CPQ going up further. >Worth noting it quickly recovered from the initial (and typical) selloff >when it was announced. > - - ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 26 Feb 1998 06:21:10 -0700 From: carolreynolds@juno.com Subject: [none] I was wondering if youowned any of the following if you woulld sell them. Their recommendations are almost always on the basis of fundamentals, not technical analysis. However, they don't release the news of their upgrade for several hours to a day or more after their analyst has already spoken to their retail and institutional brokers. The clue is a stock moving up on very heavy volume with no recent news on it or its industry group to explain the action. Often, this will be followed hours or days later with a headline confirming the upgrade. By then, it may well have moved out of a buying range for a CANSLIMer. If a stock is averaging 10,000 shares a day, I have no problem = trading it. These three stocks met this criteria. That said, OFG was = the only one to follow through today. I have started using Office 97 for my e-mail, and can't figure out how = easily attach tag lines. Bummer.
