WOWS allows you to scan stocks by about 80 different fundamental fields. Telescan has more. However, WOWS allows you to write your own technical scans and Telescan does not. The only way you can know whether a particular program meets your needs is to try it out. Most have 30-day trials. Most also have downloadable demos, but they're no substitute for the real thing. - --Db _________________________________________________________ DO YOU YAHOO!? Dear CANSLIM er's I am a fulltime options trader. The reason I got interested in CANSLIM is because it allows me to get to know a part of the market I am not familiar with. I have been trading options on the OEX and large cap stocks. Why? Because it was their turn. The liquidity driven market made the large caps a fertile field to harvest. We have seen the large cap participation narrow, rotation deteriorate and earnings become weak in Q2. I believe it is time to get ready for a different type of market. Now we have begun a correction that will as part of it's recovery incorporate a broader participation of the market. The market will be seeking value. If the bull market is too continue we need the participation of the broader market. I have relied on Technical analysis as 95% of my trading system. I am not sure TA alone is the way to go for smaller caps. One way for me to play this market is to trade Russel 2000 index options. I would also like to ride the small caps value plays. That is why about a month ago I entered this thread. I think we have much room to run yet on the upside. I also think that CANSLIM can be a very effective trading system for the next market condition. I will be glad to share any trading ideas I have. Please do the same. In my humble opinion I think it is CANSLIM's hour to shine! Ready to profit, Dave PS. I would like to share a personal quote. Data is available by 6 pm. No fundamental data--DG or TC2000 for Windows for that. At less than 1/2 cent per stock per day and a cap of $1/day it is inexpensive. I've tracked 80-100 stocks for about $10/month. The new TC2000 for Windows provides data on an intraday basis for all stocks and indexes and enables fast scans of all stocks based on a set of criteria they supply or that are designed by you. Such criteria could be: --Minimum percent earnings change for each of past 4 quarters (approximates IBD's EPS rankings). --Price growth rate better than X% of market (would approximate an IBD RS ranking of X or better) --Volume and/or price surging -- you pick either a percent rate or a ranking compared to all stocks; can be done during the market day) --Stocks in your watch list indicating oversold conditions --Apply any or all of the above by industry group --Many more criteria available The strength of TC2000 is that it can be easily set up to quickly and frequently scan and sort all stocks by criteria close to CANSLIM elements. TC2000 for Windows costs $2.49 per day regardless of how many times you download during the day. A sliding scale of discounts are available up to 25 percent. If you are interested in TC2000, I'd suggest their trial offer of $29 (DOS) or $39 (Windows) which includes a $25 (2 week) usage credit and a 30-day money back guarantee. My experience has been they are good folks. You can trust them to fix any problems (I've had one problem in 10 years--which was my own fault), but don't expect them to hold your hand. If you want fundamentals, WOW combined with Dial Data sounds good. If you want to do a lot of technical analysis with indicators, Metastock 6.5 would be pretty good. I use Metastock to run scans on my stock list based on some technical criteria, its pretty handy for that. I think simple is probably better - if you are new to investing, you might try starting out with Quotes Plus. I haven't used it, but a few members of the list recommend it. There is a demo available from their web site. - - ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 8 Aug 1998 08:51:16 -0800 From: "Patrick Wahl" Subject: Re: [CANSLIM] Non-CANSLIM--Purists Please Skip > But whether the bottom for this particular leg has been reached or > not, the chip, chip equipment, and, possibly, disc drive stocks look > as though they may be ready to rejoin the party. Hi Dave, Well I hope you're right. I won't believe it til I see it, though. The "rally" the last couple of days did exhibit some of the characteristics you refer to below. That is to say, the darlings of the last leg (big cap stocks like Dell, MSFT, LU, AOL, Internet stocks, etc.) didn't take off like the smaller fry. Also the Russell 2000 finally showed some life. However, the small cap index is the only major index to show a loss for the year, and it was battered especially badly in the last few weeks. The last couple of days is encouraging, but only time will tell. If CANSLIM stocks' time has come, then you better believe this list will be hopping. Here's hoping. Craig's post was an excellent start. I get the impression, though, that those who are interested in the subject are looking primarily to learn how to do it as opposed to sharing ideas for shorts. And learning how to short takes more than a few posts. I suggest that anyone who's interested in shorting spend at least as much time studying the process as they did studying how to invest on the long side. Excellent idea, DB, but one of the problems I have run into in trying to *understand* shorting (not yet to the point of actually trying to do it) is that unlike HTMMIS and other books that are devoted to going long, there is little information out there about the mechanics of shorting. E.g., what tables do you read in IBD? How do you interpret them? How do you place an order to short? And so on and so on. I am a bit closer to understanding the mechanics of when to place a short order thanks to the Stan Weinstein book on technical analysis which was recently recommended by another member. I found this book's description of long and short indicators very valuable. I'm sure there is more to it than what Weinstein says, but I feel like I've got a good overview of technical analysis from Weinstein. But as they say, a little knowledge is a dangerous thing. ;-) Warren Keuffel - - ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 8 Aug 1998 21:26:08 -0600 From: "Dan Sutton" Subject: [CANSLIM] This week's HGS file After a grueling 2 week vacation, I am back in front of the tube.
