From: Rainer.Knape.SGG@t-online.de (Rainer) Subject: Re: (dr350) RE: Removing your chain Date: 01 Jan 2000 16:07:09 +0100 Hello Eric, you can remove the chain and put a new endless chain in if you want. That's what your manual and Suzuki will recommend. But you have to remove the 'swing arm' (not sure about the englisch word, it's all the stuff that holds your rear wheel and the damping system) far enough to move the chain between the frame and the 'swing arm'. I guess the mount the chain in the factory before they put the other stuff together. Another option is to use a masterlink that you can 'rivot' instead of the usual spring link. But I never heard of problems using the normal masterlink with the spring (and the DR350 doesnt have that much power) - everybody does it. Hope I could make it clear enough with my english to help you ! If your DR is a California model, you will also have to remove the carbon canister and associated plumbing. I never had any problems with the vents capped off. The other line is more properly called a vacum line. << Or can you just block off the vent at the carb? >> You can block off the vacuum line at the carb, and simply use a manual petcock instead of a vacuum activated petcock. That's the route that I went on my Clarke tank. You'll need 3/16" rubber vacuum plugs, one. They normally come in a pack of several at an auto parts store, and you'll replace it periodically - they eventually crack and leak. << What does the vent do? >> It supplies vacuum to a diaphragm on the petcock, automatically opening the petcock when the engine is running. << How will it run short term / long term with it blocked off? >> You'll have to remember to manually turn the fuel on and off, just like any other dirt bike. No biggie. However, if the vacuum plug on the vacuum port splits and falls off (which it will eventually, so hang on to that packet of plugs), you won't be able to start the bike - don't ask me how I know that - and it also won't run very well at all. There are about 6 of us DR650 owners on the DR350 list (soon to be the "DR" list). Please start spreading the word. You can fine sideracks for soft luggage, aluminum panniers, cooler luggage, and GIVI luggage at www.happy-trail.com I just ordered and received a pair of E36's and a E45 for the rear with backrest and rear rack. Tim is also making highway pegs for the DR650's. He can get you a skid plate or Fred can as well. My bike has Renthal bars and Kimpex grips. You can get IMS pegs through Fred or Tim. You can get Thumper Burley pegs from Thumper and Carb jet parts from Thumper. Tim (happy trails) or Fred can get you K & N filters. Jesse Kientech will help you with carbs or any part of the suspension. I also have a DG skid plate that is very stout. Fred also has magnetic drain plugs and lifetime surgical steel oil filters. I've ordered a built-up modified Corbin seat like the one's I put on my DR350 and KLR650. I also had Fred get me an IMS 5 gallon plastic tank. Here is an article on aftermarket parts on the Thumper page: http://www.ionet.net/~jhanna/dr650set.html#market. First after I had run the bike at 75+ for about an hour on the interstate I ran out of fuel and before I could get the petcock switched to reserve the bike died and I pulled over to the side of the road. Set to prime and got 'er started up again and switched back to the normal setting on the petcock and could only put along at about 5 mpg as the bike would not respond to any more throttle. I guess I vapor locked the carb (or something like that) as after letting the bike sit for about a half an hour I started it back up and the bike ran as usual. This never happened again which I have run the tank to reserve but I was in town and not running the beast at speed for an extended period of time so I ignored to first occurrence. Over the weekend I went riding (which was great!) but towards the end of the day after running at very reduced speeds, mainly in first and second gear, the bike began to "load up" and hesitate. This was just like the bike was acting in the first scenario but this time I could run it at 70+ on the freeway and all was well. However, if I stopped at a stoplight or just wanted to run at a reduced RPM the bike would load up and die. Every now and then the bike would seem to run normally and then about 15 mins later, back to acting up. I was stuck out in the boonies and needed to get back to town so I continued to ride the tempermental beast. Just for grins, I tried to fiddle with the idle adjustment but this had absolutely no effect on the engine idle, which made me think that a part of the carb had broken. I am not the most proficient at mechanic work but this does seem strange. Is there an issue with the DR's CV carb regarding riding style etc..? Tonight I started the bike up after letting it sit for 24 hours. The bike fired right up and runs great. Any suggestions as to what could be causing the problem. So far this seems to be when I have run the bike at extremes and not during regular riding. I don't think that should make a difference but what do I know. Thanks for any input. I will be taking mine out to CO next summer for riding too. > anyone with a tail rack know of a good tail bag?? I have an RKA tail bag and it is good quality but the RKA owner is a jerk and told me I had must have had a mental problem when I questioned the fit of a tank bag on a friends bike.. And that was at a show IN PERSON! He was nasty. But, that said, his products are great. I have not tried my tail pack on my DR yet.. I have the factory rack on mine too. Good luck!
