I have been on the KLR listserve but am new to this one. Does not seem to be as much traffic though. I have spoken with Kurt Simpson and Fred Hink previously about the DR and accessories. I will get a factory skid plate as my bike is assembled and add extras later (hand guards been first). I am from Canada and my bike is also coloured different than it's US counterparts. A question, I've driven a KLR but not a DR for a greater period than twenty minutes. How do they compare in your opinions? I feel the brakes are much better. It sits a little lower, but a like a high bike. Who here has done much off roading on one? Any thoughts or tips on it's capabilities? Once again, I'm just trying to get some dialog going. My friend will be buying a used dr350 in the spring, but I'm trying to convince him to look at the drz400. From what I've read it would appear to be a great bike, all new and improved. Haven't heard much about the price though!! Looking forward to all your thoughts and opinions. My name is Jan Bradley (JB) and I too am new to the list. Although, I was on the list last year for awhile while I owned a '92 DR350S. I now have a '98 DR650SE. I am all for getting some DR650 dialog going. I too spoke to Kurt and thought I'd give this a try. Shayne said: >I will get a factory skid plate I bought the White Brothers skid plate from Chapparal here in the USA. The quality ant fit is very good and it is much less expensive than the Suzuki item. I think the cost was about $70 USD. I also bought the Suzuki gel seat. It is pretty comfortable but it is a bit too low. It is lower than the stock seat, but much better on the bum. I think I will send it off and add some foam under the gel and bring it back to at least the stock height. I also have the Suzuki rear rack installed as well as Acerbis rally hand guards. >compare in your opinions? I had a '92 DR650 then a DR350 then the current '98 DR650. For obvious reasons of weight etc., the DR350 was better off road. The 650 is far better on the road. The 650 is really not too bad off road. I've had it down some trails and it does pretty well as long as you leave the jumps alone. It is a bit heavy and softly sprung for the off road stuff, but really not too bad. I weigh about 190+ lbs. Once I adjusted the suspension "sag" it isn't too bad. On the road it is great. It is a blast in the tight twisty stuff. As far as traveling, I haven't done much. Comparing to the KLR, I've not owned one, but one of my friends has one. I think the fit and finish is a bit better on the Suzuki. The front brake is FAR better. The bike in general seems to be better quality. I have even had my DR on the road race track and it was pretty fun. Not quite the same as my Kaw ZRX1100, but still just as fun. I think I've rambled enough... Shayne, do you have a picture on the 'net of your DR? I'd like to see the color we don't see here in the USA... My bike can be seen at > http://www.suzuki.ca/en/bike/dr650se.htm. When I bring the bike home I'll put my own picture up. I looked at the gel seat on the 'net but I would rather have the bike raised than lowered. They are setting the shock at it's firmest. I'm 6'3" and 230 pounds. I would also like a bigger tank eventually. At first I thought my tank was black but it is all silver. I'll keep looking for a bigger one. I think that Fred Hink eventually can help any one out. I will add the acerbis hand guards as well. Any comments on those?? I based my purchase on the article at the Dual Sport News web site on the dr650. I hope to do plenty of forestry road riding in the Rockies. First after I had run the bike at 75+ for about an hour on the interstate I ran out of fuel and before I could get the petcock switched to reserve the bike died and I pulled over to the side of the road. Set to prime and got 'er started up again and switched back to the normal setting on the petcock and could only put along at about 5 mpg as the bike would not respond to any more throttle. I guess I vapor locked the carb (or something like that) as after letting the bike sit for about a half an hour I started it back up and the bike ran as usual. This never happened again which I have run the tank to reserve but I was in town and not running the beast at speed for an extended period of time so I ignored to first occurrence. Over the weekend I went riding (which was great!) but towards the end of the day after running at very reduced speeds, mainly in first and second gear, the bike began to "load up" and hesitate. This was just like the bike was acting in the first scenario but this time I could run it at 70+ on the freeway and all was well. However, if I stopped at a stoplight or just wanted to run at a reduced RPM the bike would load up and die. Every now and then the bike would seem to run normally and then about 15 mins later, back to acting up. I was stuck out in the boonies and needed to get back to town so I continued to ride the tempermental beast. Just for grins, I tried to fiddle with the idle adjustment but this had absolutely no effect on the engine idle, which made me think that a part of the carb had broken. I am not the most proficient at mechanic work but this does seem strange. Is there an issue with the DR's CV carb regarding riding style etc..? Tonight I started the bike up after letting it sit for 24 hours. The bike fired right up and runs great. Any suggestions as to what could be causing the problem. So far this seems to be when I have run the bike at extremes and not during regular riding. I don't think that should make a difference but what do I know. Thanks for any input.
