So, what are they going to do next? Obviously they're not going to Disneyworld, since the guys live in Orlando (been there, done that). No, this time they're going after the adult market. The Backstreet Boys' single "I'll Never Break Your Heart'' has spent the past two months atop Billboard's adult-contemporary chart. And now comes the crucial crossover to VH1 via a co-starring role on the cable channel's Storytellers with Tony Bennett, who has just released a kids' album, The Playground. ''He asked us to do it with him,'' says BSB's Kevin Richardson, who at 27 is the oldest member of the quintet. The Boys taped three of their own songs for Storytellers, which will premiere on Nov. 29. Following their own session, they joined Bennett on "Swingin' on a Star." A dressing room rehearsal and a soundcheck were all the preparation they were afforded. Backed by Bennett's combo, the unlikely teaming nailed the song the first time out. ''He only needs one take,'' Richardson says. ''It was really cool.'' < Yeah, I'll bet, Kevin! I bet you own *all* of Tony's records, and probably that Sinatra Duets record, too. If your CD player has Digital output (O) then it can be run directly to the digital input (I) if the CDR. But I guess I want to know, do you actually know people who replaced their entire collections or is this one of those urban myths where it happened to a friend of a friend? I can't imagine what that means, "replaced their entire collection". Unless they had one of those collections that consists of twenty or thirty records. The concept of somebody re-buying a whole collection on the new format boggles my mind frankly and I don't think I believe that anyone actually did that. First of all, when CD's came out there weren't that many records that you could replace. And I still don't think you could replace your whole Captain Beefheart collection. But that's not even the part that confuses my pretty little head. You have some old Aynsley Dunbar Retaliation record or the first record by "If" or Every Mother's Son or the first Association record which you got for your bar mitzvah and you've never been able to part with it. You hardly ever play these things but you like having them... which is sort of what having a "collection" means Then CD's come out and you go out looking to replace them???? I think not. At least I hope not. I replaced three records which I sold during my "vinyl purge" period and I've gotten two of them back on vinyl and would still love to find the third one... which was by Prince Lasha and Sonny Simmons, in case you're interested. I'd love to hear any stories anyone has of someone "replacing" substantial collections. And did they keep replacing them when the newer and better 20 bitmap (or whatever) versions came out? And by the way, I think you'll always be able to replace your cartridge. I do understand how Elvis's vocals can rub the wrong way (there was one song I had to abandon), but much in the same way a strong coffee can complement a sweet dessert, I thought his roughish vocals provided a nice contrast to the elegant and refined arrangements. For the record, I am a former fan of Elvis who hasn't listened to anything else he's done for 10+ years. And speaking of "aging rockers" reinventing themselves with pop/exotic airs, I also liked Todd Rundgren's "With a Twist," on which he re-interprets several of his own songs with bossa/island-ish arrangements. The version of "Hello It's Me" with it's deliberate appropriation of Martin Denny's "Quiet Village" sound is especially fine, IMO. I also like the latest effort from Saint Etienne. On this, they shed some of the more "clubby dancefloor" emphasis of prior recordings and instead offer up tasty pop tunes with some '60s now/mod/bubblegum flavor. Good arrangements and solid pop smarts overall. Three positive reviews in one posting. Richard, the guy in Disquivel, where I bought "Soft & Easy," complained that this kind of stuff wasn't selling much anymore. I'm back from Alberta, where a trip to the antique/thrift stores south of Calgary turned up a near-mint copy of Esquivel's "Infinity of Sound" for $2.00. In a thrift store, I found Jury Krytiuk Orchestra & Chorus, "A Portrait of Burt Bacharach". Who is Jury Krytiuk? It seems he's the forgotten kingpin behind Canadian music of the 1960s: "Having developed a winning combination for Stompin' Tom Connnors of Boot Records in the country field, Mr. Krytiuk, who is by the way, owner of Boot and Cynda Records, decided to diversify into other types of music. He has since produced Sean Dunphy, Ireland's top balladeer, Humphrey and the Dumptrucks, an up-and-coming folk country group from Western Canada, and this his latest achievement "A Portrait of Burt Bacharach." Canadians will know how much this all means. Calgary must be the martini capital of Canada, and I was ready to burn my membership card after a weekend. The menu for every two-bit bar has long lists of novelty cocktails at $6.00 each, and you sense that none of them existed 3 years ago. ------------------------------------------------- Will Straw, PhD Associate Professor and Director, Graduate Program in Communications McGill University http://www.arts.mcgill.ca/gpc/ # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info exotica" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email exotica@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Elisabeth Vincentelli Subject: (exotica) French weirdotica Date: 01 Dec 1998 22:57:30 -0400 I must recommend a recent purchase: (FGL, France). Well, judging from the number of used records I picked up in the early 90s, a lot of people were getting rid of a large portion of their collections. I know many people who don't even have a turntable any more, so they just junked their vinyl, and bought whatever on CD. Of course, people like this couldn't possibly be as attached to their music collections as many of us are - there are waaay too many records in my collection that I could never bear to get rid of, whether or not they've been reissued on CD. Too much sentimental value, and I still like them. Then again, I did trade away my Partridge Family record many, many years ago - it was one of those things that was way too embarrassing to keep in a collection once I reached the ripe old age of 14 or so! - and now you can buy them at Dusty Groove! cheryl # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info exotica" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email exotica@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Ottotemp@aol.com Subject: (exotica) Sergio Mendes/Otto live Date: 02 Dec 1998 03:51:35 EST Thursday Dec 31 (New Year's Eve) 9 pm - 1 am I will be spinning between sets by locals Vivendo de Pao and SERGIO MENDES at Fairmont Hotel Grand Ballroom downstairs from the Tonga Room tix are $99 available from 415-775-2107 __________________________ I'll be making three other appearances this month in SF Thursday Dec. 3 7:30 - 11:30 pm Djing at Radio Valencia FREE Sunday Dec. 6 Selling tiki News and Tiki Mugs with Tiki King and a cast of dozens of Burning Man folks at the Naughty Santas Bizarra Bazaar Somar Gallery Harrison and 9th 3pm - 12 midnight $3.00 Sunday, Dec. 20 7:30 pm - 12 midnight Djing at the Li Lo Connecticut and 18th on Potrero Hill FREE If you've never been to the Li Lo this is a good time to go Fridays and Saturdays it is packed with local yuppies and usually bad music. But why didn't I enjoy this CD overall? The Sound ! So my question, related to the record-to-CD posts, is: Is there a way to make new recordings sound old? It would be an excellent use of computer technology if there was a way to configure the sound spectrum that predominated in the early sixties and be able to channel new recording through this process to make it sound *better* (to my ears.) I could then add the missing element to the Don TIki and the Combustible Edison albums. There is a real difference made to the quality of the sound of a record during the 'cut'. There is also a difference between the old style lacquer master and a Direct to Metal master (DMM). Its not just due to the eq that the engineer doing the mastering may put on, as I've seen it done flat and still make a difference. Theres actually a lot that goes on here, the sound is passed through compressors and limiters (not quite the same thing). Different mastering rooms use different kit and have different sounds, for example Porkys mastering used a lot of valve equipment with a really warm sound, enormous things with big rheostats on and cuts (or did) to lacquer. Abbey road uses a lot more digital equipment and cut DMM, the sound from here was very different, its hard to define the difference but it had a 'vinyl warmth' but with an extended top and bottom end that was crisper, more like a CD Going into the mastering room with a DAT tape and hearing change from that into a record sound was quite an exciting thing. So you would need different filters and effects to emulate different periods in time, plus all the flavours added by microphones, tape recording technology, available effects blah blah blah. I bet there are trainspotting studio engineers who have written PC filters for this, try some home recording newsgroups. He was 88. Roventini died Monday at a hospital in Suffern, said a nephew, Philip Roventini. The cause of death had not been determined. In 1933, Roventini was 22 and being promoted by the New Yorker Hotel as "the smallest bellboy in the world" at 4 feet tall when he met advertising man Milton Biow, who had an idea for a cigarette ad. Biow gave him a dollar "to locate Philip Morris." "I had no idea that Philip Morris was a cigarette," he said later, and he strode through the hotel, shouting "Call for Philip Mor-rees." That began a career that brought Roventini a lifetime contract and a salary of up to $50,000 -- fabulous at the time. He was heard on popular live radio programs and on some of the most-watched television shows of the 1950s and 1960s, including "I Love Lucy," "Candid Camera" and the Red Skelton and Jackie Gleason shows. Darienne Dennis, a spokeswoman for Philip Morris Cos. Inc., said Roventini, who always appeared in his short-jacketed bellboy outfit, was the company's "living trademark." She said Roventini estimated that he called out the slogan more than a million times -- and shook hands with more than a million people. "I remember going out with him," his nephew said. Ms. Gillespie, 56, one of the nine original Mouseketeers in "The Mickey Mouse Club" television show, faces 14 counts of conspiracy, securities fraud, mail fraud, obstruction of justice, perjury and aiding and abetting a Federal crime. Jack S. Weiss, an assistant United States Attorney, told jurors that Ms. Gillespie had written bad checks, some under a false name in a stock swindle and then lied about the scheme to investigators. Ms. Gillespie took part in an "elaborate series of lies," Weiss said. The prosecutor told jurors that Ms. Gillespie had written bad checks to brokerage firms to pay for stock in the company Unique Mobility, beginning in late 1992. Ms. Gillespie's boyfriend and Ms. Gillespie bought tens of thousands of shares of stock in the company, and because their checks were not good they risked nothing but stood to make money if the stock value rose, Weiss said. The music propelled the cat from catnapping to full hysteria in under 10 seconds. It should be noted that the Star Trek theme music was being produced (loudly, with a lot of emphasis on the high notes) by four human beings not noted for their abilities to sing on key; exposure to the theme music of the actual show had no measurable affect on the same cat. The hysteria manifested itself in the typical cat behavior of galloping around as if being chased by George Scherr, and the behavior ceased when the music (such as it was) stopped, though the cat showed signs of apparent paranoia for at least an hour afterward." 1998-11-08 Cat Song Survey Inspired by investigator Hogue, we invite you to take part in our survey entitled "Feline Reactions to Theme Songs." Here's some quick reviews: Morton Gould - Jungle Drums Morton Gould, Marty Gold, it's close right? I got duped by the name and the half naked chick on the cover, hiding behind a palm. Gould is an orchestral arranger and there's not a friggin' jungle drum anywhere to be found. Instead, it's very orchestral treatments of latinate exotica standards, like Jungle Drums (hence the name), Caravan, Hawaiian War Chant, Malaguena, and so on. When I say orchestral, I'm not just talking strings, I'm talking it sounds like something out of the Nutcracker Suite most of the time. Pretty dull, unless you like full-on orchestras. War Chant is interesting, except the nimbleness of the tune gets tripped up by the weight of the orchestra. Also, it's not particularly well balanced, so the horns carrying the tune are overrun by the strings playing backup. Caravan really sounds like the Arabian Dance from Nutcracker. Again, slightly interesting for fifty cents, but nothing I'd search for. Charles Magnante - Fiesta! - Command It's fantastic. Get this one at all costs. The track list covers a few of the same items as the Gould, but it's just Magnante and his accordian, plus a few percussionists and maybe a bassist. There might a guitar player too, I can't remember. In any case, it starts out with a super-latin bang and though the second side gets a bit Spanish-y (think Mexican Hat Dance or Cucaracha), it's still pretty good all the way through. If I had to, I'd pay the bucks for this one. Though it only cost me fifty cents. Enoch Light - Movie Hits - Project 3 A later Enoch album, and my first exposure to him, leaves me yawning. The track selection looks great, but it's all pretty watery. The Godfather Waltz is NOT the same as the Godfather Theme, alas. There is an interesting bit of jazz-fusion going on in the French Connection theme, and the theme from Shaft is decent, but too close to the original to make it worth playing this one. The rest is slow and stringy, or even really dorky in some cases. No percussion or organ, really. In any case, maybe pick it up for a quarter. Dick Hyman - Man from ORGAN and Electrodynamics Both of these cost me a pretty penny but are well worth it. ORGAN is a classic and covers all sorts of nifty spy-type tunes on the organ with just enough help to really swing. Electrodynamics is not quite as strong, but it starts out very Moog-like, with a nifty version of Stompin' at the Savoy. It's a later album, '72 I think, but still pretty good all the way through. When are they gonna re-release this Hyman stuff?? V/A - !Wild! Stereo Drums - Capitol I bought this when I was a neophyte. What a cover. And what a name! But man, only if you really really really like drums, because it's not much more than eight or nine drum solos. Yawn, mostly, though it does have the nifty Bongo Bash by Pepe Dominguin that's on the Saxophobia UL disc. The two Les Baxter tunes are disappointing and so are the other Pepe ones. The two Dick Harrell tunes are alright. I would include Rocket Racket on a tape. If you see it for cheap, pick it up maybe, especially for the cover. But I paid five bucks for it. Yikes! What did I know. Warren Kime and Brass Impact Oh yeah! King Kini turned me on to this. A real go-go swing thing with wordless vocals and sharp brass, on Command. They cover Mas Que Nada, Mr. Lucky, One Note Samba, plus Elenor Rigby. Woohoo! In any case, this rocks. It cost me a few bucks, and was well worth it. Dick Schory - Runnin' Wild - RCA The same Stereo Impact album they took the cuts from for the Space Age Pop series. There are definitely others I would have picked though. It starts slow, but the back side is fantastic. I got the die-cut outer sleeve, but no inny. (Anyone have an extra?) Plus, I got it cheap, but I'd pay for it for sure. Lots of good brass, much percussion and generally well-crafted arrangements. Very fun. Bert Kaempfert's GH Not exciting, really, but a nice introduction. There are a few arrangements I might toss on a tape, but not stellar by any means. Herb Alpert - Whipped Cream and Other Delights Sure, sure, we've all got it and I've got two, but I only just recently sat down to really listen, and except for Taste of Honey (which I was humming incessantly all Thanksgiving. It wouldn't go away!!) it's pretty mediocre. Ah well. Francis Lai - A Man and a Woman Really really good light bossa tunes. If you like Gilberto, you should samba down to your local thrift and pick it up. It's nice and light and airy, great for hammock summer listening. The Folkswingers with Hariha Ross - Raga Rock Go-go type arrangements with sitar. Nothing that really shakes my shoes. Very average. Maybe if they had some horns? Anyway, that's the report so far. More to come as I tape and listen. Convenience was the driving force and I think we're talking of a collection in the order of 300 to 350 which I consider small. It is feasible to do (assuming you have the money to do so) if your tastes in music are more mainstream but I have to say looking at our colection, we'd be lucky to be able to replace 25%! > First of all, when CD's came out there weren't that many records that you > could replace. At least I hope not. You're overestimating the dedication of the average person's attachment to records as collectible objects. You, and I would have to include myself in this category as well, are what the average person would call obsessive. If you consider the contents of the average person's music collection, you would probably not have any problem understanding why they woudn't hold any particular attachment to it! > I replaced three records which I sold during my "vinyl purge" period and > I've gotten two of them back on vinyl and would still love to find the > third one... which was by Prince Lasha and Sonny Simmons, in case you're > interested. I replaced one Klaus Schulze LP early on which I had hoped would be an improvement, only to find the CD to be of inferior quality. I consequently dumped it and rebought a newer vinyl copy which someone else had obviously dumped (there's of course since been a 20 bit remastered version...) and at that point I stopped. In fact I reverted to a last ditch vinyl splurge, figuring I may never get a second chance. This multi-edition reissue game is highly annoying and the Residents are one group I waould have to sigle out a a prime offender in this respect. > And by the way, I think you'll always be able to replace your cartridge. Yes, but a lot of the manufacturers are disappearing. I'm totally sold on moving coil and the choices here are limited. I'm currently using a Signet (Audio Technica) OC-9 which I think (hope) is still in production. Maybe you all knew this, but I hadn't shopped for CDs in a while, and I sort of panicked--buying up about $100 worth of reissues that I figured would simply be unavailable next year. . . Everywhere I went, the "Lounge" bins had been moved to back corners, shrunk in size, and left picked over without restocking. One store owner bluntly told me that the Bar None _Infinity In Sound_ I pulled out of the bin was the last one he would be ordering. "They just haven't moved like the earlier Esquivel releases." (By the way, did the _Latine-esque_ reissue ever make it out the door before the axe fell?) Even the once-ubiquitous UltraLounge series seemed to be less visible, with only about 9 of the volumes still on the shelves. The final insult was having to rescue Martin Denny's _Hypnotique/Exotica vol. III_ from the "Swing" bin at a Wherehouse Records. They just changed the name on the sign, still leaving behind the cutesy little Martini drawings, the swine. I had previously wondered why Ashley sounded so aggrieved about the whole Swing scene--but no more. That's why I can't understand the disdain with which some "audiophiles" hold all CDs. As the record proceeds from the outer grooves to the inner grooves, the rate of groove linear distance passing the stylus decreases. Thus, the peaks and valleys of a given sound get closer together on the vinyl, and distortion set in. High frequencies are more susceptible to distortion, because the peaks and valleys are closer together in the first place. Even the best records I've heard, played on good systems, develop some noticeable level of high frequency distortion on the inner grooves. You may in fact have a stylus or cartridge problem contributing to the distortion you hear, but under the best conditions, you're going to hear some distortion , anyway. --Mark Jacksonville, Florida, USA tibia@compuserve.com http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/tibia # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info exotica" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email exotica@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Lou Smith Subject: (exotica) Roventini, Shapiro, Van Eps obits Date: 02 Dec 1998 10:06:31 -0600 WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. Shapiro, who co-founded the National Record Mart chain with his younger brother, died Sunday of heart failure. He was 84. Shapiro died four months after his brother and business partner, Howard Shapiro, died at age 82. National Record Mart is now the nation's fifth-largest music retailer with 200 stores. In the late 1930s, the Shapiro brothers opened Jitterbug Record Mart in the downtown Pittsburgh area. Samuel Shapiro came up with the idea to sell records that jukebox operators no longer wanted. Samuel Shapiro built relationships with record companies to help the small chain get copies of new recordings early. He also persuaded WWSW radio to broadcast the latest hits from a National Record Mart store for one hour on weeknights. *George Van Eps SANTA ANA, Calif. (AP) -- George Van Eps, a jazz guitarist who played with Benny Goodman, George Gershwin and Fats Waller, died Sunday of complications from pneumonia. He was 85. In the mid-1930s, Van Eps was one of the first to add a seventh string to his guitar. The innovation allowed Van Eps to play lead lines while accompanying himself with bass notes and harmonies. Other guitarists, including jazz-grunge player Charlie Hunter, have taken up the seven-string in recent years. Van Eps also worked with Freddy Martin and Ray Noble in the 1930s. # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info exotica" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email exotica@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Lou Smith Subject: (exotica) Album Frames Date: 02 Dec 1998 11:01:45 -0600 At 10:46 PM 12/1/98 -0500, Peter wrote: >I've got a catalog from the Restoration Hardware store that lists album frames. >12 x 12 inch frames that are thick enough to house an album, record and all. > >Peter Funny you should mention RH. Well I didn't but NOW I DO. "Ping Pang Pong The Swinging Ball", by the Creed Taylor Orchestra. "Arrangements by Kenyon Hopkins". In the field of swinging percussion records, I'd say it's above average. Not quite Terry Snyder but close. The best part of the record are these two original compositions by Kenyon. "Argument" and "Lovers". They sound like classic crime jazz. The liner notes inform you that the two pieces were composed for "interpretive dance" pieces performed on the Perry Como Show. I can definitely see that. In fact if I could show you, I could probably do an imitation of the kind of moves those dancers must have made. I'd be willing to bet they were dressed like beatniks. Maybe they even carried bongos as props. In any case, those two compositions certainly whet my appetite for more originals by Kenyon. And by the way, for Brian and others... I didn't find it for 50 cents. It was eight dollars! Of course that's eight dollars Canadian. At the same store, also for eight bucks I found this record by "Kem-o-Sabe", subtitled "The Electric Indian". The store put on a post-it note calling it "Lounge, Native Style". Once it was Indian and now it's Native but either way, what a great record! How would I describe it?. "Spinning Wheel" and "Ma cherie Amour" don't sound too Indian to me but I guess the originals do have a bit of that "From a Wigwam" sound. It's got lots of percussion and vibes, horns and organ with a kind of funky organ jazz groove. (Not exactly Susan Aglugark, another inside joke for my fellow Canucks.) And speaking of funky grooves... There's this DJ who I know and he's always looking for that elusive and indescribable groove. I've heard him play. I figure I kind of know what he's into. "Mambo Parisienne" from the Mancini "Charade" soundtrack and stuff like that. So whenever I see him in record stores, I point out records I think might fit into his thing. But they're never right. At first I was kind of hurt, then baffled and then I gave up. So I saw him today at the store where I bought the Kenyon Hopkins and he actually recommended the Kemosabe record to me. He was standing there listening to stuff on headphones as I pulled out a Toots Thieleman "Whistler" record that I own. I showed it to him and pointed out this cut "Duke's Place" which I love and which I've put on a bunch of mixed tapes. So he listened to it... And lo and behold and Hallelujah, I got one! He liked it. He even bought it! So I guess Nat has the groove after all. Well it was a Bobby Setter tune called Tchip Tchip, which the record boasts as "the million seller hit". This causes the stylus to actually cut a groove into the record. The awful thing about this is that these records can look beautiful -- even visual NM+ --- but then at home they are almost unlistenable. The same thing can be caused by a record being played with a SAPPHIRE stylus or a worn diamond stylus. If one is playing valuable LPs on one of those old turntables that does not use a cartridge, just a cheap replacement stylus (the kind of table found in beautiful "furniture style" cabinets) you are seriously damaging these records with every play. # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info exotica" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email exotica@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: mimim@texas.net (Mimi Mayer) Subject: Re: Fw: (exotica) French weirdotica Date: 04 Dec 1998 08:27:43 -0500 BasicHip wrote >i checked it out, but I speak or read no French. My weirdest records. That's really got me stumped. What exactly is a weird record? You'd have to make it more specific for me to list my weirdest ones. I think Heino's weird but I'm sure someone thinks my Smog CD's are weird. I have the Spiro Agnew record that someone mentioned but for the people who bought it at the time, it was the voice of truth. Five years ago, I would have thought those bird calls on Martin Denny records were weird. I guess I still do but I like them. And if Yma Sumac isn't weird, I don't know who is. I think a truly weird record would have to have been weird the day it came out. If you include everything that's weird now, with some critical distance, then you'd have to include "Mrs.Brown you've got a lovely daughter". Actually I thought that was weird the day it came out. Same with "Winchester Cathedral". I guess I'm just whining because this is a thread I should be able to respond to but for the life of me, I just can't figure it out. I have a box full of obscure Canadian country records. I think they're the weirdest records I have but I bet their families didn't think so. I think Lee Hazelwood is weird. And that Leonard Cohen/Phil Spector record. And does anyone have that Tex Ritter /Stan Kenton record? He sings "September Song" like he's literally about to die before the last note is played. By my criteria, the most consistently weird records are country records. Ever heard "Hit it with a stick" by Freddy Hart? There's this country compilation out now called "God less America" I think, by the same people who brought you Las Vegas Grind. If you want weird, check out "Ed's Place" by a certain Horace Heller. Or "Please don't go topless Mother" by Troy Hess. Don't make me list all my spoken word records. Okay just one. "Teaching your daughter about sex". Satisfied? One more? "The New World Money System". Sorry. He was 84 and lived in Venice. Haggart's long and varied career demonstrated his own vitality as well as that of the music. Not only did he record with some of the greatest black jazz musicians, including Louis Armstrong, Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, Duke Ellington, Sarah Vaughan and Charlie Parker, but he was a mainstay in some of the great white bands as well. And by the end of his life he had not only participated in the bands and recordings of figures like Bob Crosby, Eddie Condon, Muggsy Spanier, Wingy Manone, Jess Stacy and Jack Teagarden, but had become an important part of the neo-traditionalist movement that he helped start by forming the World's Greatest Jazz Band in 1968 with the trumpeter Yank Lawson. Through the mid-1990s, Haggart was still playing and recording with musicians like Kenny Davern, Bob Wilber, Jane Jarvis and others. Haggart's success came in part from his ability to perform in all sorts of different contexts, from small jazz groups to larger pop ensembles designed for singers. He worked with the string orchestra of Charlie Parker, and in the large ensembles that backed Sarah Vaughan. In the small groups his buoyant, swinging playing came to the forefront; at his several appearances at New York's 92nd Street Y in the 1990s, Haggart's playing always enlivened the band, making the music swing harder than it otherwise might have. His first significant work in jazz was as a bassist with the Bob Crosby band, to which he added not just his bass work but arrangements that often proved to be classics, including "What's New," "South Rampart Street Parade" and "The Big Noise from Winnetka," a duet for bass and drums. That number, which he composed and recorded with the drummer Ray Bauduc in 1938, opens with drums, has stop-time sections, slapped bass and a rare musical virtuosity. Haggart whistles, Bauduc taps on the bass strings with his sticks, and the effect is casual brilliance. In 1942 he left the Crosby band to freelance in New York, working in recording studios and in radio and television. During the 1940s Haggart was one of New York's most sought-after musicians, recording and playing with such artists as Duke Ellington, Louis Armstrong and Ella Fitzgerald. His playing with Armstrong is recorded on the "The Complete Town Hall Concert" of 1947. For the next few decades Haggart drifted in and out of the studios. He worked occasionally with Bob Crosby reunion groups, and recorded with the saxophonist Bud Freeman in 1962. Born in Manhattan, Haggart, whose full name was Robert Sherwood Haggart, grew up in Douglaston, N.Y. He started playing guitar as a teen-ager and then switched to the double bass when he was 17. He is survived by a son, Bob Haggart Jr. of Sarasota, Fla., and a sister. In 1968 he formed the World's Greatest Jazz Band with Lawson, a group that in many ways provided inspiration for an entire movement of neo-traditionalists that came to fruition in the 1980s and '90s. In the '90s Haggart recorded regularly with the clarinetist Kenny Davern and the saxophonist Bob Wilber, along with the pianist Jane Jarvis and the saxophonist Rick Fay. In July 1996, he performed in Japan with the World's Greatest Jazz Band. He was also an accomplished painter in oils and watercolors and found a ready market for his work. # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info exotica" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email exotica@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Lou Smith Subject: (exotica) fwd: Teri Summers LIVE Date: 04 Dec 1998 11:30:16 -0600 From the AS/PMA website: Teri Summers Live at Sweet Basil The song-poem world is abuzz with news of Teri Thornton's upcoming five-night engagement at New York's Sweet Basil nightclub, from December 1 through 5. These software gizmos might work, but don't neglect ye olde analog approach. A lot of that great "sound" of the old recordings comes from the classic tube ("valve" in the UK) equipment used to record it. Of course you can't do anything about how things are recorded these days, but try assembling a rig of old tube hi-fi gear -- it'll get you closer on your end at least. And consider single-driver speakers (meaning: just one speaker in the box -- no separate woofer & tweeter). Nice presence without crossovers or phase problems to muddle things up. And the highs and lows will be a bit compromised, which would eliminate some of that modern harshness. Of course to have things even out, you'd have to play your modern recordings through this system and your old records through a separate *modern* system. m.ace ecam@voicenet.com OOK http://www.voicenet.com/~ecam/ # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info exotica" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email exotica@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Rcbrooksod@aol.com Subject: Re: (exotica) Re: consumer audio blanks Date: 04 Dec 1998 14:05:28 EST << >So these "audio" blanks are really $5?!? they're dropping, currently $4 over here in belgium. they'll cost only a little more than computer cdr's in a year or so, now they're so expensive because it's a new product. >> Respectfully submitted: Not with the artists' "commisions" tacked onto them. that is why the cdr's for computer use are only a dollar now while the ones with the special code to work in sound system CD recorders cost the same $ 4 or $ 5 that they do in Belgium (and elsewhere). After procrastinating its purchase for years, when I found a copy of Jivaro still in the bins at that hell hole of overpricing, Border's, I figured I'd better grab it. Copies of this stuff MAY still be sitting on store shelves or turning up used, but grab 'em while you can if you want 'em. Some of this stuff is inevitably rarer on CD than vinyl. Yeah, I'm still convinced the swing movement is what the masses wanted the lounge scene to be and commercial viability reigned. (I *still* don't think "lounge" effectively describes the music) Proof is in that ludicrous 9/97 "Lounge LA" ComEd review recently found and discussed here: >And on the other hand, how much do stereo test records and their sterile >anonymity really have to do with Frank Sinatra or Louis Prima and Keely >Smith (supposedly all chief deities in the Cocktail Nation's pantheon of >musical gods), and their crucially in-person lounge performance, anyway? Boy, *I'm* dealing with a totally different pantheon -- until I found that mint Sinatra/Jobim record for 50 cents, I owned *nothing* by the aforementioned gods, or even Billy Holliday, mentioned at the review's end as the perfect antidote to that awful Combustible Edison. Louis Prima sounds more like the swing demographic to me... That review breaks what I deem one of the worst offenses of media review and criticism: panning something because, while it may succeed at what it intended to do, it doesn't align with the reviewer's own agenda. In a post-Marilyn Manson music world, it's kind of funny that "lounge" was the genre to confound/shock/rile the music press the way it did. (Bei Ludwig Beck am Rathauseck, die gerade Vinyls verramschen, dies nur f=FCr die M=FCnchner) I'm really surprised about the man. It looks like there was another "Kraftwerk" at the same time as Kraftwerk and that "Kraftwerk" was Giorgio Moroder. The album is called "Einzelgaenger", means "lone wolf", is from 1975 and pretty experimental, german lyrics, yet Pop and nice to listen to. Has elements that Kraftwerk used much later, such as a counting robot-voices, sequential patterns and layers, and and and. It's phenomenal! Recorded in the legendary Musicland Studios of course... all compositions by himself and "all instruments played by Giorgio Moroder", which is kind of unbelievable, since a friend of mine has talked to the studio technician that Giorgio has worked with, who claimed that Moroder couldn't read notes and had to paint colored dots on the piano keys to be able to play a melody. But who cares! The results speak for themselves. Another goodie to be reissued! At that time ('82) Beuys was a candidate for the Green Party, who now at last have made it into the new government coalition. The joke of the title is based on the fact that Reagan sounds exactely like the german word Regen, which means rain. So it's "Sun instead of Reagan/rain". Why is it a weird record? Hard to tell... Joseph Beuys isn't a musician, he sings kind of false, the lyrics are VERY political, but a bit naive at the same time. Beuys is dead and he was a sort of mysterious person. All of this in combination makes a pretty weird impression on the contemporary listener. Many of you may be familiar with the Line Renaud tune "Sexe" which appears on the UltraLounge CD, Batchelor Pad Royale. This song of course is phenomenal, unfortunately it is a complete anomaly as compared to the rest of the album. Renaud is your basic French cabaret style singer and while I could see some of the songs growing in their appeal, it is still a disappiontment, having the expectations of more "Sexe". These are interesting artifacts of the days when cheap air fares to Europe were just becoming available, books like "Europe on $5 a Day" were being written, and Holiday magazine was in its heyday. Each album features several stereotypical tunes from the country, along with 4-6 Hopkins originals, along with "sound pictures" by recording engineer Keene Crockett, and claimed to offer "Impressions in Sound of an American on Tour"--"everything but the tickets inside." They're also among the very few albums I've ever seen where the gatefold was right done the middle of the front cover, with two half wings on each side. Each record also featured an essay by Esquire's travel editor printed on a half-sized booklet attached to the inside of the right wing. The music is arranged and conducted by Hopkins and features ace NYC session men like Doc Severinsen, Joe Wilder, Hank Jones, Phil Woods, and Phil Bodner. I'm still looking for "France." Bon voyage! Unless they were smash hits in print for several years or a giveaway promo, there were a lot of Christmas LPs, this one probably included, that may have only been in print for one Christmas season and then deleted and are thus quite rare. The strange thing is that there are songtitles listed, but no way can you see who are the interpreters. There are a few words from the compiler (Mr. Projorktor), but he doesn't seem to bother to let the world know who actually sings and plays on those often beautiful tracks (the "Summertime" rendition here is one of my exotica faves). Stuff like Harry Bertoia's jangly metal constructions or David Jacobs' large, pneumatic rubber creations which emit massive, droning whale fart sounds (to put it impolitely). Sit around all day at the Aesthetic Reseach Center, people come up to you and play you stuff or show you stuff and you tell them "From an aesthetic point of view, that's crap". I've always wanted to be a consultant but never found anything where anyone would want to consult me... which probably goes a long way towards explaining why I'm so driven to foist my opinions onto this list. I have a lot of weird records, but in the case of, say, The >Residents, it's intentionally weird, which seems to violate the spirit of >the question. I suspect you'll get an argument there. A truly weird record would require the artist in question to be completely "serious" in their intent. As if to say "this is really how I hear music". I don't think I can say that the Residents aren't totally serious, that they don't hear music that way. At the same time though, I assume that they know their music is weird so that might let them out. Daniel Johnson might be a better one to talk about. I agree that unintentionality (does this word exist?) must be given for true weirdness, but how do we know? In case of, hmm, The Shaggs it's easy to tell, they were most probably not aware of their natural weirdness, but how about Bruce Haack or even better: Heino. I'm quite shure that he - at least nowadays - pretty much knows, how ambivalent and excentric his appeal really is. Others might have played with such kind of strangeness long before the Residents. I guess, again it's one of those highly subjective subjects that we can endlessly discuss here. I'm not saying we shouldn't.... I mean, W.E.I.R.D. was the only fan club I was ever in, so I should be an expert. One thing's for shure: If I say this or that record is a weird record, I am giving my own personal point of view. This point of view is most likely based on my ignorance of the true character of the involved musicians or the exact circumstances under which the said record was once produced. As soon as I learn more about it, the weirdness dissolves. It so happened to me with the Shaggs. A friend of mine (Boyd again) had one of the Shaggs on the phone and asked her all about the production and also what she thought about their rediscovery etc. And she was really innocent and explained everything nicely to him and the whole story sounded very normal. Since Boyd told me this I heard the record with different ears. Now it wasn't weird anymore, rather cute... Granted, not always the best finds there so it wasn't much of a challenge. The soundtrack to "The Wild Eye" music by Gianni Marchetti (RCA 4003). Late sixties ('68) Italian stuff with a little bit of every style from one track to the next. Reminiscent of Barry's "The Knack" soundtrack or the ST to "The Girl from UNCLE", filled with that winsome female background vocal. One track, "Bali Street" features a very nice use of the star and some guy humming to himself, a sort of mumbling-humming that still has me perplexed (think of a bashful Gary McFarland.) A strange fuzz rock guitar track,"Nights in Saigon" seems to go on forever, sound as if this is the guitarists first attempt a a blues rock melody. All in all quite a hip album. Has any one seen this film? It looks kind of strange. From the liner notes it seems to be a behind the scenes story of a film director who shoots "mondo" type films. From the liner notes: "The Wild Eye" is a starlkly realistic, highly dramatic shocker about a man who'll stop at nothing to produce horror documentaries for their "entertainment" value. [About the lead character Paolo] Could there actually be a human being as unconscionable, as cruel, as thoroughly selfish and dissolutely sensual as this man? It is not a question lightly dismissed. Sounds like a good one to me. "Kringle's Jingle" comes from the Columbia album "Skating Time". (CS 8782) The Jackie Davis Trio does The Christmas Song from Kapp KL 1030 "Organistics." Ian Fraser's Orchestra takes a "Sleigh Ride" from Richmond's Percussive Stereo series album "For the Young at Heart." Billy May does "Snowfall Cha Cha" from "Cha Cha! Billy May," Capitol ST 1329. Hal Mooney's O plays "Baby, It's Cold Outside" from Woodwinds and Percussion, Mercury PPS 2013. Someone suggested "The Bells of Saint Mary's" from "rePercussion" also on Mercury...but I am doubtful. I might possibly include a Mancini original "Carol for Another Christmas" (pretty homey sounding...not at all swinging, but for an original I might go for it) and Marlene Dietrich singing Der Trommelmann (that's The Little Drummer Boy in Deutsche, of course you know that).
