I have to agree, as a North American, that this is certainly the first thing that comes to my mind when I think of the term Exotica. What is interesting is that this image is very much from the past. The original Tiki bars and the polynesian food craze have long fizzled out from their 1960's peak, here at least, and any new revival is mostly attributed to the rediscovery of the lounge culture and the associations and images this evokes. Certainly anyone who has visited Hawaii in the last 10 years or so and expected polynesian paradise would be utterly shocked at what they saw; Honolulu itself rivals New York densities in many places and the other islands are rapidly becoming indistinguishable from south Florida. (I've been many times to both worlds!). Point being, it can't be recreated as it is a phenomenon unique to a specific time and place. Nonetheless, it is a very useful departure for the discussion of world music influencing popular music and in this sense Martin Denny was somehat of pioneer. To this degree, I would see this as a natural extension of discussions but of course you need interest to generate discussion so I'd welcome more discussion on this subject. But in defense of the wide variety of postings, I look to this list to discuss (and of course discover more of) all of those unclassifable records I've discovered and many seem to fit the spirit of the discussions here. Certainly no other list I know does it better, so... The song is listed as the soundtrack to a TV (Game?)show of the same name. Anyone know anything about this program? Is this single featured on lp release? (although this track in particular is different from the rest of the CD). There is a wild toy instrument and brass band version of "Paint It Black", as well. As on all Comelade CDs, quirkiness and toy instruments abound. And, likewise, as most of his other CDs, it's on Les disques du soleil et de l'acier, from France (DSA 54042)and was released in 1996. My personal Comelade favourites, which I would recommend to anyone wanting to know more about him, are El Primitivismo on G3G/DSA, 1988 (CDSA 54011/G3PC3),Ragazzin' The Blues on Delabel/DSA, 1991 (DE 871442), and of course, Haikus de Pianos - this one is lots of very short tracks, mostly cover versions of songs including Smoke on the Water, Egyptian Reggae, and 96 Tears, played on toy piano.(this was originally released on Eva, but I believe it's been reissued by DSA)1992. I know there's stuff for the Mac, but i don't really know anything by name that i can recommend. For the PC there are several options. Sound Forge has a De-Clicking plug-in which works for digital clicks as well as vinyl. Wavelab also has a similar plugin, which to my ears sounds much better than the SF one, even though i like SF infinitely better than Wavelab. In fact, the declicker in Wavelab is the only thing i use Wavelab for! Then there's Dart Pro by Tracer Tech, which is a dedicated Vinyl Restoration app. This purportedly is capable of the best results, but i've never had any luck with it because the damn user interface is too clunky. It takes forever to adjust settings and preview things. Both the SF and WL plugins are direct-x, which means they have real-time, tweakable previewing. That, for me, is the most important thing. Apart from these, there's one other program that i can't remember the name of right now but it's not very good so don't bother! Oh wait! Adaptec EZCD Creator has a vinyl restoration section....... i haven't tried it, but i doubt very heavily that it's any good... > > Are there downsides? Thanks. All of these have their negative side effects. You'll never really get a completely perfect restoration. The best you can do is strive to minimize the pops and clicks. The more processing you apply, the more obvious the digital artifacts are. But as i said, in my opinion the Wavelab plugin is the most effective and easiest to use. pea # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info exotica" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email exotica@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 29 Apr 1998 21:19:33 EDT From: BasicHip Subject: Re: (exotica) Declicking software? speaking of computers... i finally got a good one (pc) and have been looking foward to the day when i could use it as a part of my stereo system to create mixes. I enjoy them very much, with >John's electronics being very prominent on both. It's the same fusion of >Rock/Moog that makes me enjoy Keating's Space Experience. I'm playing it right now to remind myself why I didn't like it. I was making tapes with lots of moog and everytime I'd put one of these songs on, I'd take it off part way through. It's not that it's bad exactly. I guess it's that other Montenegro records with moog on them have a kind of "naivete" (?) or something. This resembles some mild mid-70's fusion record more than anything else. It's got Larry Carlton and a couple of other fusion criminals and when the liner notes refer to "John - not yet out of his teens", I just think "Oh Hugo you let your son ruin your music". The kid's listening to all these wankathon fusion records and his dad is a musical genius and he goes "Hey dad, you should really listen to this stuff" and next thing you know, another guy's trying to UPDATE his sound and losing everything that made him interesting in the process. I'm going on about this I guess because this record reminds me that it's not that I like any record with moog on it. I lost sight of that in this new moog record pursuit. I forgot all those crappy moog solos that came out after that Edgar Winter thing when he's playing that thing slung around his neck like a guitar and showing that guitar players aren't the only ones that can play a boring solo. >I'd love to hear the Elton John one. What year was it recorded? He died >of emphysema shortly after the Wonderland album, I think. This came out in 1975. By the way, I was excited by the presence of James Jamerson on bass but I guess I shouldn't have been. I apologize in advance if this is inappropriate, but I thought this might interest some of you vinyl hounds. Over the weekend, I was out of town in Homer, Alaska and wandered into a thrift store. They had an amazingly small selection of records there, but I saw some that might have "exotica value", so I thought, "what the hell" and bought them. Personally, I don't collect vinyl, but I thought they might be of value to some of you folks. I figured there may be a few goodies in Homer that haven't been "discovered" by the exotica crowd yet. Here they are: >1. Mitch Miller and the Gang: "Sing Along With Mitch" (Columbia CL1160) >2. Jesse Crawford: "The Poet Of the Organ" (Design DLP 230) >3. (Unknown) : "Lure of Hawaii" (Sutton 220) >4. Ferrante & Teicher: "Golden Piano Hits" (United Artists 6269) >5. Bert Kaempfert: "The Magic Music of Far Away Places" (Decca DL4616) >6. Morton Gould & His Orchestra: "Love Walked In" (RCA LSC2633) >7. Broadway Pops Orch: "Strings Around the World Vol. 4" (Omega OSL 61) All albums seem to be in pretty good condition (though the sleeves leave something to be desired in some cases). Song listings are available on request. Haven't listened to them yet, as I don't have a record player. (But a friend does.) Email me privately at <> if you're interested.
