Most songs are by Steve Hoffman, who also produced. The single "Sha La Love You" was produced by Steve Barri (ex Fantastic Baggy, ex Grass Root) who had become an in-house staff producer at ABC. It's great, rockin' bubblegum. Harder than most, with a big guitar sound. I was in my usual record store today and saw a near new portable record player that looked battery operated. I asked the guys in the store about it and they said it belonged to the Japanese guy at the back of the store... and this is what he was buying... 2 - 2 cubic foot boxes full of LPs and a smaller box ful; of 7"s. He apparently owns a store in Japan. But what surprised them was the kind of stuff he was buying as typically they sell Japanese collectors Jazz records. This guy was buying Martin Denny and all sorts of stuff from exotica to new wave. They also noted that if it weren't for these people the store could not survive. So the good news is you can't generalize about Japanese tastes, and the bad... as usual, they still seem to like the same things I do... So I bought 'em (and the best of Blue Brazil, which I've not really listened to). None are dated and all are pressed in Japan (original price printed on the sleeve is 2,500 Yen, that may help someone with a working knowledge of Japanese record buying date them I suppose) on the Tam label. The sleeves are pretty rough. Fist OF Fury - Joseph Koo, Ku Chia Hua - YX 70001 Lyrics by James Wong, sung by Mike Remedios. The main theme is great, a tell the story stirring theme sung by Mike Remedios (why do I know that name?) along the lines of the Water Margin Theme. The rest of the music reminds me of some of Ennio Morricone's western scores, orchestral, disturbing. There is a lot of dialogue (in English) and plenty of those Kung Fu sound effects. Full sleeve notes. In Chinese (? big square pictograms rather than the smaller more fluid ones I associate with Japan). Is Joseph Koo Ku Chia Hua? Way of the Dragon - Joseph Koo - YX7011 Lyrics by James Wong, sung by Mike Remedios More of the same, I think this one has some whistling on it, too. The picture of Bruce on the cover is slightly less blurry. Tower of Death - Kirth Mormin (this may be wrong, I can't read my own handwriting) - YX28022 Lyrics by Casey Lunkin, no singer listed Different Kettle of fish this one, a vocal and instrumental of a quite good Disco/Funk track, a truly terrible pop song that I would date to the early eighties. If I had too. Still, plenty of FX. Nice front sleeve, no sleeve notes whatever on it. Could this be 'Game of Death' in disguise? Its the record I saw first and I think the unrecognisable name is what threw me. I like the disco cuts on Tower of death, but the one that cuts it for me is the 'Fist of Fury' for the main theme, something about his hand being a hand unless you cross him when it become 'A Fist! Its the Fist of Furyeeeeeeee!'. Also It seems a bit bizarre to have middle eastern records with the English dubbed soundtrack snippets. Something for budding Depth Charge wannabees anyway. Calling this an HSGem is pushin' it--more like an HSRhinestone...but I've very fond of a Steve Allen faux hippie collaboration with Gabor Szabo and Hal Blaine called Songs for Gentle People. Recorded on Dunhill during Steve's psychedelic period. I'd guess it would appeal to the soft popsters here would also along with the Now Sound folk. These are all -instrumental tunes, some cutesy (the march called Here Comes Sargeant Pepper), many with strings (So Nice, serving a fine sitar break in the center), some straight ahead mid-60s pop recastings of hits o' the day (Something Stupid, 59th St. Bridge Song, Groovin', (If You're Goin' to) San Francisco). Szabo's tunes Fox, Flowers and Love, and Flower Revolution get pretty trippy, man. Bonus goodies: Shrewd liners by Nat Hentoff. And sitar and harpsichord on most cuts. Plus you can puzzle as I have over why Steve's pupil's on the cover photo look so funny. Just found a second copy, which will wing its way to Europe shortly. Dan, let me know if you wanna burn a CD. That sounds like a record I should have. If you find a third copy.... Gabor was quite the little hippie experimenter, eh? He finally got some props in the new Vanity Fair, even if it is just for the cover of his record. Then again, were he to be rediscovered, he'd have to answer for that record he made with Gary McFarland, which though I have a soft spot for it, is probably the most ill-advised record either of them ever made.
