Evidently, the syndicated episodes of the tv show 'WKRP in Cincinnati' have had many of the original songs altered or changed from the original versions. This was done mainly to save money, as the syndication company no longer wished to pay the royalties for the original songs. Even some of the original generic background 'stock' music was changed, even though no royalties were ever paid out for those songs. They replaced that 'stock' music with a newer version of generic 'stock' music, just to make sure that nothing illegal was getting through. Then, because the music was changed, they had to overdub various actors voices, so they would no longer refer to the original songs. In once case, the D.J. Venus Flytrap refers to 'The Swords' instead of 'The Doors' Some episodes where the characters spoke out actual song lyrics had those sections altered and changed also. Its a quite fascinating look into the world of music and royalties and television reruns. I agree with Moondog's music sounding "exotica" without actually being labelled "exotica". Another non exotica Exotica album I would recommend is Harry Partch's "The Bewitched", or many of his records, but Bewitched stands out in my mind. He used many homemade instruments that have an exotic quality to them, many sound like Boom Bams, claves and other "exotica" type percussive instruments. Plus lots of wordless female Yma Sumac style "HEE-YAA!s" and yelps. If you like Yma Sumac's "Legend of Jivaro", you will love Partch. Granted his music is a bit more dramatic and over the top than say Martin Denny or Sumac, but to me sits along side my Baxter, Lyman, Sumac and Denny in my exotica collection.

any other non "exotica" exotica albums that anyone else can recommend??

While this is indeed sad news, yes, I knew that he passed away. Johnny Carson, when he recalled Moondog standing outside his house also mentioned erroneously that he had died. Hardin mentioned the false death rumors in the NPR interview that I had taped when he was publicizing "Sax Pax For a Sax", which was released in 1997, two years before his death, which makes their interviewing technique not so novel. By the way, he was leading the orchestras playing his music via a bass drum and someone (maybe Elvis Costello?) had noted that he performed with great vigor and drummed all the way through his concerts, which isn't bad if you are in your eighties! I posted out about him in April, in response to a post by Sean Pearman. Lou Smith posted his obituary on September 15th. Since the post that I was responding to was about his music and not his passing, I left all of that stuff out. I apologize for confusing anyone.
