I have some records previously owned by a hippie that make the room reek
of patchouli when played. I think it's just unintentional crap in the
grooves...

On a similar note, one of the editors of Rolling Stone mentioned that some
rock group comprised of hippies sent them an album that stank so badly of
patchouli, they BURIED the album in the grounds behind the office.
By the way, does anyone remember that the film "Polyester" came with
Scratch 'n' Sniff cards for the audience, so that when a number was flashed
on the screen (when Divine's character was sniffing about for something)
you were to scratch the card and sniff your finger? The film's director,
John Waters called the one-time technique "Smell-O-Vision".
Slightly back on topic, I would gather that on of Alice Cooper's album
"School's Out" album on original issue may have smelled like cotton,
because they were shipped with panties wrapped around the LP. Just try
THAT with a CD!

Actually, well before "Polyester", there was "Scent of Mystery"
(1960) in which various odors were piped into the theatre,
corresponding to images on the screen. It was produced by Mike
Todd and they called the process "Odorama" or "Smell-o-Vision".
I've never seen the movie, though according to reviews at the time,
it stank.

check out Lole y Manuel for some amazingly emotional stuff, if you're into

Subject: (exotica) Kahiki Party Report #1 (long-ish)
When a Moment takes place you just revel in the communion. The closing
of the Kahiki was an unlikely Moment featuring a benign mid-western city, a
bland landscape and a bittersweet Blip on the architectural radar screen. But
the underground friction of a rare Moment invested Columbus Ohio with a
special power on August 26, if for only that Blip which stunned local
Kahiki-lovers and rewarded the emotional expectations of a surprisingly tight
band of onlookers from distant and nearby "shores".
The evening began at 6PM with a long line at the front door. Each guest
had bought a ticket in advance and the crowd was three-to-one Columbus area
people. Upon getting lei'd, stamped (with a tiki of course) and tee-shirted,
we were admitted into the majesty of the Kahiki lobby. The locals were
visibly moved by the rush of "jet-setters", none of whom appeared to take
themselves too seriously much to the betterment of the evening. The
inevitable "documentary makers", "journalists" and "celebrities", tongues
firmly in cheek, added to the mysticism of the event: several photographers
were seen taking shots of other photographers as they themselves snapped
pictures of exotica "celebrities". (Names have been omitted for the
protection of the guilty). For a Moment, the Exotica Movement was playing its
most subversive card: a failed supperclub in Ohio had become a Classic, and
unknown Exoticats and Kittens had become Legends.
The evening was a lesson in lost culture. As Exotica tunes offered by
several DJ's were spun, a delectable array of exotic/Asian dishes were
offered in a buffet whose display was an award winner. Notable was the giant
pineapple adorned with fresh shrimp mounted on toothpicks. The skinned and
cooked baby pig, head and body intact, was bypassed by yours truly! After
self-generated introductions and the pitter patter of post-dinner chatter, it
was upstairs for the live music. It opened with a short emotional speech rife
with promises of reopening "on the river" by amiable Kahiki owner Michael
Tsao. Michael's overblown dialog with the audience was certainly forgivable.
It was his 15 minutes and he wanted an extension. The presentation then
segued to a film clip of Martin Denny talking exotica and sitting down at a
piano to play the opening bass notes of "Quiet Village". Don Tiki segued in
"live" and the film faded to black as the Honolulu nonet began playing "Quiet
Village" in earnest to the delight of the packed hall. As the Mondo Tiki that
IS the centerpiece of the Kahiki presided solemnly, Don Tiki overcame the
predictable shrieks of clubland feedback and turned in a tight performance of
Ethno-Polyblends that swayed the crowd. The cutie who sings "An Occasional
Man" shimmied especially for yours truly (ask Jeff Chenault!) as she played
bass. I surrendered, seized by the frenzy of a Tiki-Styled Cha Cha. A few
femme fatales, exotically and erotically dressed, were selected by your's
truly to Bust A Move. Or did they select me? The soul claps raised like
thunder in the heat of the Moment as the floor shook in celebration.
But, 40 minutes of dancefloor workout call for a cocktail. Having already
sampled the Mai Tai and the Headhunter, I ordered a Smoking Eruption and just
in the nick of time as my Moment came for a conversation with a flowered
maiden from Nashville who was recruiting fellow travellers to witness the
closing of the Desert Inn in Vegas. The maiden--I think I'll call her
Mary--said that the closing was slated for the next evening! I asked her if
witnessing dying icons of eras long gone was her modus operandi. She smiled
demurely, clearly moved by the cleverness of my query. I shared my Smoking
Eruption with her as she smiled seductively. The ecstacy of the evening began
to melt into an Exotic and Erotic blur, the power of which most in
attendance seemed to feel. That was the Moment that I felt most happy to have
taken four Advil prior to leaving the hotel!
The night wound down slowly and surely, revellers saying long goodbyes
and feeling the carmaderie they hoped would be felt upon attending such a
Moment. This was a Moment that will live in infamy.............Jimmy
Botticelli
(Hopefully someone will cover the artwork, architecture and tiki sculpture in
the Kahiki...simply astonishing)

On Warner/Atlantic the reasonably priced (5-7 quid) three volumes of
'Latin Dance Party' are much better than their name might suggest. They
aren't mind-blowingly amazing, but all 10 tracks per lp are pretty
solid...

i don't know if this counts, but i got a cd called 'The Soul of Black Peru'
a couple of months back - and it's really cool!
It's Latin, but with a dash of soul, African drumming, really, really
beautiful music. i can't understand a word of Spanish (apart from useful
phrases like 'yo soy una melocoton' and '?donde estan los servicos mas
cerca?') but you can still 'understand' what they're singing because of the
sheer amount of feeling and emotion. it's really rather lovely.
(it's on Luaka Bop, distributed by Virgin, LBCD14)
Or there's always good ol' Herp Alpert and 'A Taste of Honey'...

Hal has put together a lot of tribute records, including one for Kurt Weill
(something about Stars), one for Thelonius Monk (Weird Nightmares) (or was
it Mingus??) and my favorite, one of Disney tunes called Stay Awake. This
includes adult staples like James Taylor, Bonnie Raitt and Aaron Neville,
but also such great acts as Yma Sumac, Sun Ra, Betty Carter and Los Lobos.
He also produced David Sanborn's Night Music, which routinely featured acts
as far flung as Boozoo Chavis, Diamanda Galas, Christian Marclay, Sonic
Youth, Indigo Girls, Leonard Cohen and of course more routine folk as well.
They usually all jammed together in the end. Alas, I've never seen, only
heard
of the shows. One of my holy grails.
So.
I've always wondered about this title, though, because I like him so much.
I imagine he draws on and juxtaposes some amazingly disparate sonic
resources.

The Thelonious Monk tribute is called "That's Way I feel Now". I have it on CD but get it on LP if you can find it. They took some tracks off the 2 LP set to put it on CD. Great Joe Jackson version of 'round Midnight".
And the Disney CD is great. I just wish most of the tracks were not squashed into medleys....
and speaking of medleys...I know most of you hate the Ultra Lounge habit of taking 2 songs and putting them onto a singe track...Just borrowed the "Bachelor in Paris" CD...usually given low marks by those I asked about the series...One thing I was not told about this one is that every 3 or so tracks they have young lady with a French accent talking up all the romantic sites of Le Pari.
Beside that I really liked this one.

Sure wish I was living in the US when this show was on. It's a current topic
of conversation on the Zorn list as well. One show that boggles the mind (at
least as described by someone else) was one with Todd Rundgren, Taj Mahal,
Pat Metheny, Christian Marclay and Sanborn apparently performing a scene
from "H.M.S. Pinafore."
Are there tapes of the show anywhere out there?

I believe that is Line Renaud, actress and singer. You probably DO like her

Well, a song from it, in any case, "Never Mind the Why and
Wherefore". Christian Marclay is a fellow who plays altered records. I
don't recall seeing Metheny in this segment, but I believe Nanci Griffith
was singing the Gallant Captain's Daughter part. Rundgren took the first
verse, Mahal the second. Sanborn and Marclay the instrumental breaks.
All of this was performed in sailor's garb, draped over street
clothes. It's one of the best segments of the show.
For some other recollections of the show, look here:
http://users.loa.com/~ceol/nornr.html
The one that I can think of that most closely relates to the list is the
version of "America, the Beautiful" by Van Dyke Parks, performed by an
orchestra of Japanese vocalists and a mix of Western and Eastern instruments.

This guy I work with just told me he bought the Green Hornet soundtrack off
eBay, which he's never even listened to. Should I borrow it and rip it from
him?
I seem to remember people saying it was pretty great.

Well, I can't remember much of the incidental music, but the theme song
certainly was a classic...trumpeter Al Hirt performing "Flight of the
Bumblebee".

I still have one of these cards and it still smells (just). Beware No. 2!!

Well, I've ordered it just based on the title track, which is a jazzed up
take on Flight of the Bumblebee (if I'm not mistaken) with the obligatory
POW! brass hits.
Ehhhhh-xcellent.

According to The Book Of Tiki the Kahiki must have (had) the largest indoor tikis
of all tiki temples ever. Did you catch any conversation about the plans for the
new Kahiki?

I published a perfumed CD myself a couple of years ago, a best-of compilation
album of my then-label Ata Tak designed as a box of cigars. Not only did we
silk-print each booklet cover in gold by ourselves, but we bought an
extra-expensive bottle of tobacco aroma essence and put a drop of it on each.
Unfortunately only a few cigar afficionados seemed to smell it, the others
probably just thought that the guy who owns the shop must be a heavy smoker...

Subject: (exotica) The Kahiki Closing Party - Intro
Sorry that I have been tardy on getting a post to the List regarding the
event.
I was away from my office about a week and have been busy since my return.
The Khaki closing was a tremendous event where I got to meet the owners and
staff of a great Polynesian restaurant, friends from the world of Exotica
(and especially this List), and entertainers that I have appreciated for some
time.
I have been thinking a lot about the closing and, in general, my overall
interests and participation in this suburban pop culture of ours.
I am going to post not just about the events of the closing party, but about
some of my observations and opinions regarding the event too.
This will take a few days to all come together so bare with me while I work
through it.

Subject: (exotica) The Kahiki Closing Party - Part 1
Well, the closing was fantastic - no two ways about that. This event served
to bring great recognition to the Tsao Family and their contributions as a
provider for Tiki Culture and a productive business in the Columbus area for
nearly 40 years, as well as providing a great venue for tiki aficionados to
gather.
I arrived at The Kahiki early on Saturday afternoon with the plan to meet
some of the people what would be instrumental in the closing. Things were in
an "organized disarray" as the members of Don Tiki, The Kahiki Staff, King
Kukulele, Otto and various others were preparing for the evenings events.
Almost immediately, I met Mr. Michael Tsao, who preferred all to call him
Michael, and had the most amicable, albeit very enlightening, discussion.
Actually, it was more like a dissertation, as Michael openly told me about
the things leading up to the closing decision.
Things have been painfully slow in recent years. There were the occasional
catered events, weddings and such, that helped but, in general, business was
pretty slow. The area The Kahiki is in is a "transitional" area. And the
transition to "rough" is nearly complete.
Now there are some that will not categorize the area as being "rough." But
the patrons with the money and dedication to keep a place like this afloat
have long since moved away.
The Kahiki is about 5 miles from downtown Columbus on Broad Street, which is
one of the main lines in and out of downtown Columbus. The first 3 miles of
Broad Street coming from downtown goes through one of the nicest, most
upscale neighborhoods of Columbus. This area was developed in the 20s, 30s
and 40s and the quality of the homes is impressive. There are no business at
all along the beautifully kept and manicured vistas of Broad Street in this
area.
The next stretch of Broad was developed in the 50's and 60's when developers
learned there was more money in placing 3 or 4 houses per acre and making the
main roads "commercial." What was I am sure a nice area in the 1960's has
gone through the traditional suburban decline and the area, while not totally
derelict, is not where most people who are "getting ahead" prefer to live.
And with that goes the people who prefer to dine in places like The Kahiki.
They moved away a long time ago and if they do come back, it is once in a
blue moon and that is not enough of a following to keep a place like The
Kahiki in business.

A major contribution to The Kahiki=E2=80=99s demise is because of the econom=
ic status=20
base of Columbus. Columbus is not an industrial city like many cities in=20
Ohio. Urban neighborhoods in some industrial cities have experienced=20
redevelopment in the last ten or fifteen years. Especially if the industrie=
s=20
are thriving and a good wage is afforded tot he workers. =20
This was the case that I observed while on a side trip to Dearborn, Michigan=
,=20
just before going to Columbus. Ford is headquartered in Dearborn. Factories=
=20
are all around, but urban (and suburban) redevelopment has allowed the=20
surrounds of the factories to be cleaned up. The neighborhoods are clean,=20
the streets are maintained and the businesses have prospered. There is an=20
Italian restaurant that had been there for more than 40 years that was still=
=20
prospering. It was on Michigan Avenue, right in the middle of all the Ford=20
development, but was on a much more solid footing because of the support of=20
viable neighborhood dwellers.
Now back to Columbus, the city has spread out because there are no reasons t=
o=20
refurbish areas like where The Kahiki is. The newer, and most say nicer,=20
suburban areas are north of downtown -- far north, about 12 miles. In=20
essence, The Kahiki has become a restaurant of destination and not a=20
convenient stop on one's way home.
I do want to state that the area of downtown Columbus is very nice. As ofte=
n=20
happens, the true urban areas are often renovated as they are still major=20
areas of commerce. It is the suburban areas adjacent to the urban area that=
=20
falter. I stayed in a refurbished 1800's hotel, The Great Southern, right=20
in the middle of downtown and it was spectacular. Adjacent to the hotel is=20
The Southern Theater which has also be refurbished and is used for upscale=20
concerts and plays. A block away is a restored movie house, The Ohio,=20
complete with a "Mighty Wurlitzer" organ (although they call theirs a "Might=
y=20
Morgan"). Another Exotica List member and I went to see Gunga Din the night=
=20
before The Kahiki closing. The place was great. I include this because I=20
don=E2=80=99t want to give the impression that all of Columbus is run down.=20=
It is=20
not. Its just too bad something like that could not happen to The Kahiki. =20
On a final note about downtown. The Columbus Museum of Art has a spectacula=
r=20
collection which includes about 30 Impressionists paintings. The Museum is=20
definitely worth a visit if passing near Columbus.
