Today I had lots of spare time to search for a truly outstanding fractal. I would find a 9 at least, or perhaps that most elusive of all fractals, a 10. Filled with high hopes, I tweaked the real(p1) parameter of the parent fractal version 2 and began my search. Oh how I searched, but every trail led to a dead end. Every symmetrical arrangement of elements bottomed out without reaching a midget. Unwilling to admit defeat and resort to my stockpile of old images, I searched on. After an hour I admitted defeat and settled for the bland midget in today's scene. I had failed, and my failure would be made public for all the world to see. I gave the picture a cursory coloring, named it "The Great Failure", and rated it a nearly-worthless 1. Not much can be said about the poor bedraggled waif of a midget, which is as mundane as the midgets I found the first day I worked with fractals those 12 or so years ago. Its pattern is obviously that of midgets that lie in the east valley area of larger midgets. We've all seen this kind of midget a thousand times. The splotchy colors are flat, muddy and uninspired. I tried outlining the most obvious feature, but that made no improvement. Those who would like to see my failure may do so by running the parameter file and waiting 5 minutes, or by picking up the GIF image file from Usenet at: alt.binaries.pictures.fractals or from the Web at: The fractal weather today was very humid and mostly cloudy. A heavy thunder-shower in the afternoon kept the cats in hiding, but stopped just short of flooding the fractal basement. Due to the extreme humidity, the temperature of 84F (29C) felt more like 95F (35C). And due to my foul mood over being unable to find a decent fractal, I did nothing at all on my long philosophical article, which one of these days will appear. But I did post a couple responses to articles that had appeared earlier on the philofractal list, which has been unusually active lately, though not quite as much on the topic of fractal philosophy as one might wish. Well, I've had it for one day. It's 10:50pm and Doctor Who is coming on the telly in 40 minutes. That gives me just enough time to wrap things up, feed the fractal cats, and settle in my favorite chair for a good doze. Until tomorrow, when I'll return with a better fractal, take care, and when you're at the bottom, there's only one way to go. It somewhat resembles that famous Japanese print of a giant wave, though in this case, the wave is moving from right to left. And the wave in today's picture is not a water wave, it is a wave in space. What we actually see in the image is three- dimensional space being twisted in four-dimensional hyperspace until it forms a loose spiral. The small bits and pieces scattered through the picture, could be stars, but whatever they are, they reveal the mathematical tension surging through the scene. I found today's image by accident in the second version of the 'parent' fractal, while searching for midgets. I found no midget, but today's out-of-the-ordinary picture more than makes up for the lack of a midget. I named the picture "Surging Water". I would have named it "The Wave", but I seem to remember giving an early FOTD that name. The rating of 6 seems pretty fair for an image such as today's. The parameter file renders in 10 minutes, a time long enough to make a download of the GIF image file the better way of viewing the giant wave. The file of the image may be found on Usenet at: and on the Web at: The fractal weather today was mostly cloudy and very humid, with a temperature of 82F (28C) and rain and thunder most of the afternoon and evening. It will be a few days yet before the article is ready, but when it finally arrives, it will have been worth the wait. For those familiar with (Bayesian) conditional probability (abbreviated BCP here), BCP uses division for the definition of conditional probability as Pr(AB)/Pr(A) where Pr(AB) is the probability of the set/event intersection of sets A, B, while Pr(A) is the probability of set/event A if that probability is not 0. LBP uses subtraction instead of division, defining Pr(A-->B) as Pr(AB) - Pr(A) + 1, and has a number of advantages over BCP in low probability events because Pr(A-->B) is defined when Pr(A) is 0. The term 1 in Pr(A-->B) arises naturally from the mathematics from the definition of the set/event A-->B as A' U B where A' is the complement of A (the part of the universe outside A) and U is set/event union ("or"). It turns out that the 1 guarantees that the result Pr(AB) - Pr(A) + 1 is always between 0 and 1 inclusive, which is required for a probability. Fractals, like strings/membranes in theoretical physics, are maximum entropy and maximum parameter entropy in LBP. More about this can be found from abstracts of 46 of my 100+ papers at Institute for Logic of University of Vienna, http://www.logic.univie.ac.at, by selecting ABSTRACTS and then BY AUTHOR and then OSHER DOCTOROW. Here I will merely mention that fractals regarded as boundaries (leaf boundaries, cloud boundaries, continent or geographical boundaries, tree boundaries, flower boundaries, etc.) have probability 0 and in fact Lebesgue measure 0 as proven in a typical course in graduate real analysis in mathematics. The basic reason for this is that n-k dimensional subsets of n dimensional Euclidean or Euclidean-like closed bounded sets for k = 1 to n are "smaller" than n dimensional sets in the sense of being "infinitely thin" in one or more dimensions, and so have measure (and probability) 0. I will hopefully continue this soon. Actually, I didn't find the image -- the evolver found it. I simply tweaked the colors a bit. The image was calculated by the MandNewt07 formula, which is number seven in my series of 12 Ikenaga variations. I named the image "A Fractal Puzzle" because I don't know what the Ikenaga function is good for other than making fractals, and also because of the puzzling mixture of smoothness and chaos. The finished product rates a perfectly average 5. At 10 minutes, the parameter file is a bit slow. Downloading the image file from: alt.binaries.pictures.fractals or from: is far faster. The weather today at Fractal Central is also a puzzle, since I was out of town most of the day, but in northern Virginia it was partly cloudy and 87F (30.5C), with a heavy shower in the afternoon. I had no time at all for philosophy today. That may come tomorrow. Check then to see. Until next time, take care, and keep your fractals in line. I naturally gave it the name "A Routine Fractal", and honestly rated it a 3. The midget is typical of those found deep in the stars of the higher order radicals of the Mandelbrot set, though the formula in this case is Z^(-1.1)-Z^0.9+1/C. The unusual parent fractal is worth a look. The parameter file renders in 57 minutes, far too long a time for any reasonable fractalist to wait for such a routine image. The solution to this dilemma is to download the GIF image from: alt.binaries.pictures.fractals or from: The fractal weather today was delightful, though a bit cool for early September. The sunny skies and temperature of 68F 20C had the fractal cats outdoors most of the day. But alas, the fractal philosophy went nowhere, and since tomorrow will be another hectic day, it likely will go nowhere then either. But regardless, I'll be here on schedule with another fractal and at least a few words. Until next time, take care, and see you soon. Current theories of the universe tell us that the beginning of space and time appeared as an instantaneous burst of energy, but the ending will come far less dramatically, as the universe slowly runs down until all activity and finally time itself stops. Today's fractal is a picture of Mandelbrot buds caught in a different kind of doomsday -- the destruction by fire. Now unless one lives near an active volcano or the Almighty sends down His heavenly fire, such an end is unlikely, but regardless, today's image is filled with fire, and a bit of brimstone. I needed little time to find the name for today's picture. I named it "Mandelbrot Doomsday" a few minutes after seeing it. Then I rated it a 6, because it is a little above average. The scene consists entirely of bof60 inside fill, which reveals the remnants of an evaporated midget. The formula is once again the MandelbrotMix4, the most prolific formula in my collection. Unfortunately for the impatient, the parameter file is another slow one, requiring the better part of an hour to render. Fortunately, there is another way of viewing the fiery scene -- by downloading the GIF image file from the binary Usenet group: alt.binaries.pictures.fractals or from Paul Lee's Web site at: The fractal weather today was near perfect, with partly cloudy skies and a temperature of 68F (20C), which brought out the spirit of adventure in the fractal cats. While exploring in the yard, they scared up a stray cat and sent the intruder scurrying down the hill. I finished the current rush late this afternoon, a bit too late to philosophize, but not too late to find today's fractal. Fortunately for fans of fantastic fractosophy however, tomorrow promises to be a slow day, which should give me time enough to do the really intense headwork necessary to get my long promised article in shape. And that's it for another day. It's time to shut down the fractal shoppe, give the cats their last snack of the day, and call it a night. Until tomorrow then, take care, and though haste makes waste, never put off until tomorrow that which can be done today. The exact expression that was iterated to create today's picture is Z^(-0.9)-Z^(1.1)+C, another deceivingly simple one, which promises nothing but delivers everything. I named the picture "The Laciest Midget", not because it is the laciest fractal I have ever seen, but rather because it is an unusually delicate image, giving the impression of an evapora- ting universe. Indeed, when studying the image, trying to think of a suitable name, I was reminded of the Veil Nebula in the constellation Cygnus, which is the remnant of an ancient super- nova. I was tempted to name the picture "Life" because the elements from which life developed were created in ancient super- novae, but the connection seemed a bit too remote, and I decided on the present name. At first, I considered rating the image a 7. But then I noticed that due to too low a maxiter, the midget is not fully defined. I settled on the present rating of 6. The parameter file renders in 10 minutes. Unless the internet is jammed, the GIF image downloads from: alt.binaries.pictures.fractals or from: in 1/5 the time. The fractal weather today was once again perfect, and the fractal cats took full advantage of the perfection, lounging on the porch and in the grass from late morning until 6pm. The temperature of 72F (22C) was perfect for any activity either indoor or outdoor. I finished my long philosophical article this afternoon. For those curious to see the article that took a week to refine, it will be posted as a separate article to the philofractal list immediately following this FOTD. The article is a little hard on science, but it is hard in a way intended as helpful. And now I'm going to call it an evening, feed the cats, and settle into my favorite chair, where I try to watch TV but usually doze off. Until tomorrow, take care, and keep your fractals sealed tightly, or they might evaporate. I have no excuse for such an unlikely name, except that the word simply popped into my head while I was gazing at the picture. The rating of 6 might be a bit liberal, but it's not a bad image, and could easily be described as slightly above average. Of course, the image was created by the MandelbrotMix4 formula -- that most prolific producer of FOTD's, at least until the next generation of MandelbrotMixes comes along. The scene exists deep in version 2 of the 'Parent' fractal, near the point where a group of holes converges on the most prominent ring. And yes, I must confess a sin . . . I ran the image through a graphic program before posting it. But I only added a little contrast, so the sin was minor. The parameter file takes over 7 minutes to render, making a download of the GIF image file worth the trip. That GIF file may be found on Usenet, posted to the binary group: alt.binaries.pictures.fractals and on the Web at Paul's site at the URL: The fractal weather today was variably cloudy with a temperature of 77F (25C), which the cats must have found to their liking. Tippy showed up at the door just after lunch, holding a mouse. So I know he enjoyed himself. And I feel a sense of relief now that the philosophical article, which I labored over for nearly two weeks, has finally seen the light of day. After such an outburst, I'm temporarily out of steam, but in a few days I'll be ready for another round of philosophy. So keep tuned. Oh my, I hear Thomas downstairs shouting at Tippy. Hopefully, they're not quarreling. I'd best shut down the fractal shop and settle the fractal cat dispute. Until tomorrow, take care, and find the entire universe in a fractal. The area I randomly chose to investigate is one of the side spurs of the most Mandel-like feature in the fractal. There, buried deep in one of the twisting rings that fill this fractal, I found today's midget. After studying the image for several minutes and finding no appropriate name, I decided that the many swirling filaments resemble a head of hair caught in a tornado. Leaving out the tornado, I named the picture "A Long- hair Fractal" and rated it an above-average 7. The classic image has been posted in GIF format to: alt.binaries.pictures.fractals and to: For those who would rather run the attached parameter file and wait, the wait will be 13 minutes. Like several other recent FOTD names, this one was invented without a logical reason. The eight olive-colored elements around the midget are shaped vaguely like hearts. I guess that kind of justifies the name. The formula that created the scene is Z^(-31)+Z^(1.1)+(1/C), a formula that draws a most unusual fractal -- so unusual in fact that I'll probably be returning to it often in the days to come. And speaking of days to come, I must report at this time that I will be taking a long-overdue vacation the week of September 17th to recharge my fractal and philosophical batteries. Conse- quently, the next FOTD after Sept. 16th will appear on the 25th. Today's parameter file runs very fast -- under a minute on most machines -- making the download of doubtful benefit timewise. But for those who would still wish to download the GIF file of the image, that file may be found on Usenet at: and on the Web at: The fractal weather today was just about perfect for late summer, as sunny skies and a temperature of 86F (30C) made conditions ideal for both the beach and the fractal cats. The cats showed approval by romping in the yard and getting into a friendly tussle. As mentioned above, the philosophical wisdom is in a lull, and will likely remain so until after my vacation, which I will spend somewhere on the rocky coast of Maine, pondering mysteries both large and small. But the vacation is yet a week away. Right now it's 11:40pm and time to shut down the fractal shoppe for another day. As a result, I found it necessary to turn to my fractal archives and pull out an image several months old. But old or not, it's an image good enough to receive the honor of being declared FOTD. The formula behind the image, -Z^(-0.9)-Z^(-2.2)+(1/C), is simple enough, though I can't remember the appearance of the parent fractal. It's an image composed of bits and pieces of fractal stuff, all of it surrounding a Mandelbrot Minibrot, which is the name I gave it. The rating of 7 may be a bit high, but only by a point or so. In fact I didn't even think of philosophy until I began this paragraph. That might change however when I check my e-mail, which I haven't had a chance to read yet today. And now, though it's still early, I'm already ready for a long evening of dozing before the TV. I'll return tomorrow with another FOTD and other odds and ends. They gave their aid by acting as paperweights and sitting on the work. But despite the rush, I found time to scrounge up a quick fractal. The expression -1.48*(1/Z)-0.05*Z^(-11)+(1/C) was calculated by the MandelbrotMix4 formula to produce the image of today's FOTD. It's an image with large flat areas, the kind of image that requires a narrow, sharply defined palette of colors, with numerous dark bands. I named the picture "Unexpected Midget" when a midget turned up where least expected -- in a spider-like parent fractal that is all arms with no body. After a brief consideration, I rated the picture a slightly below average 4, since fractals with such patchy flat areas of color are not my favorite type. A good feature is that the parameter file is quite fast, running in only 34 seconds. But since it will take longer than that to copy the file to the proper directory, the GIF image has been posted to: alt.binaries.pictures.fractals and to: for quick retrieval. The fractal weather today was partly cloudy, humid, and 84F (29C). The cats must have disapproved, as they spent most of the day keeping me company while I worked. And speaking of work, it's going quite well. By the time I hit the road this Saturday morning, things should be far enough ahead so that I'll be able to enjoy my week's vacation in Maine, the first time off in two years, without concern. If all goes well, I'll return armed with an arsenal of newly pondered philosophy. Whether I post it remains to be determined. But one thing most certainly determined is that the time has come to shut down the fractal shoppe, scat the cats, and call it an evening. Until I return in 24 hours with another fractal, take care, and enjoy today's picture. See Mon. 4 Sept for my definitions. Let x be the probability of set/event A, written x = Pr(A), let y be the probability of the set AB ("A and B", which is the intersection of sets/events A, B). We are concerned with Pr(A --> B) = 1 - x + y. We define a function f(x, y) = 1 - x + y, and its real conjugate f(x,y)^ = 1 - y + x, and a fixed point of (f(x,y), f(x,y)^ ) = (x,y) is a solution of this equation. By ordinary algebra (equating f(x,y) = x, f(x,y)^ = y), we get the unique solution x = 1, y = 1. Hence Pr(A-->B) = 1 - x + 1 = 1 - 1 + 1 = 1, and likewise Pr(A-->B)^ = 1 - y + x = 1. Generalizing this process, we look for points where Pr(A-->B), now written x --> y, equals 1, etc. This turns out to be precisely the points where Pr(A) = 0 (extremely rare events, boundary events, lower dimensional events in n dimensional space, etc.), and subset events where the influencing event A is a subset (contained in) the influenced event B. Therefore, fixed point theory generalized provides an independent way of establishing logic-based probability (LBP) theory. However, fixed points give exceptional insight themselves in interdisciplinary research. They are often isolated points or events which repeat themselves one or more times as time passes, and which remain the same in some way, and which have important influence on other events. For example, in the discipline of history, emphasis would no longer be on history as a collection of stories, but on the errors and crises of history: the start of a war, the end of a war, the start of a battle, the end of a battle, and what causes/influences each and other events. History would become a study of why repeated errors are made rather than a compendium of "endless stories". In fractal image compression, fixed points are of course of critical importance. But once again the MandelbrotMix4 formula has saved the day, this time by finding an image in 5 minutes that rendered in just over 1/2 minute. The crisis abated as fast as it arose. The expression -0.65*(Z^(-1.1))+1.35*(Z^(0.9))+(1/C) was iterated to produce the parent fractal, which consists of a comma-shaped Mandeloid with an ill-defined negative tail extending southeast. The FOTD itself pictures the negative tail jutting in from the upper left corner of the frame and vanishing behind a foreground hill near bottom center, while a decorative circular basin adds balance near the lower right corner. The parameter file is quite fast. And as always, the GIF image is available for those who would rather not run the parameter file. That image may be found on Usenet at: and on the Web at: The fractal weather today was partly cloudy with lower humidity and a temperature of 80F (26.5C). By afternoon, the cats grew bored watching me work, and decided to spend the rest of the day on the porch, watching the neighborhood activities. Of course, the midget is not made of iridium -- only credit cards are made of iridium -- the midget is made of fractal stuff, and fractal stuff is made of numbers, and numbers are abstractions. So the midget is a visible abstraction. But regardless of what it's made of, the midget in today's image has a nice metallic luster to it. I have added a bit of extra contrast in a graphic program to bring out the sheen. I named the picture "Iridium Splendor", a name perhaps a bit too strong, but I like the image so "Iridium Splendor" is its name. The expression Z^(1.1)-Z^(-0.9)+(1/C) was iterated by the M-Mix4 formula to produce today's image. The 6-minute draw time of the parameter file is just long enough to make downloading the GIF image file more efficient. Look for file fradev.zip. Here's what's new: Version 20.1.0\ Incremented the version number to accommodate backwards compatibility for the inside=fmod option. Fixed the assignment of hotkeys to video modes so that the fractint.cfg file is no longer corrupted. Made the showdot= feature reset with if it is entered using the screen. Added a check for the video size before invoking the palette editor. Too small a size would crash Fractint. Fixed an extraseg conflict which occurred with arbitrary precision when the key was used with various screens open (x,y,b). This conflict also occurred when loading an ap math image at the video selection screen. Cleaned up some of the ap math initialization code. Fixed an obscure bug that left memory allocated when an unfinished image was being reloaded, but a video mode was not selected (escape was pressed). Added outside=fmod option. This is an extension of the inside=fmod option. The magnitude used for the comparison is now based on the same calculation as is used for the bailout test. This feature was contributed by Iain Stirling. There is a problem with the mandel fractal type when outside=fmod is used with inside=bof6x and bailoutest=real, imag, or manr. This is likely due to changes made in the code so that bof images could be reproduced. Select a different fractal type that produces the default mandel image to explore using these parameters. Added outside=tdis option. This colors the pixels according to the total distance traveled by the orbit. This feature was suggested by Steve Robinson on the Fractint Wish List. Modified the inside and outside prompts on the screen. They are now split into two separate prompts. One for entering a color number and the other for changing the option. The left and right arrow keys can now be used to change the inside and outside options. Fixed a bug that was causing a crash when mathtolerance= was used and fractal types ifs, ifs3d, or lsystem were selected. Increased the minimum stack requirement for passes=s (SOI) to eliminate crashes when the tab key was pressed. After a week of roaming the rugged rock-bound coast of Maine, I arrived back just before noon today, exhausted but ready to go fractaling. A short 15-minute search produced today's fractal, which exists in a parent fractal that lies midway between parent fractals 1 and 2. It's a rather somber gray-blue midget, not spectacular, yet pleasant and soothing to look at -- a midget with four antennae -- just what I needed to relax me after a 600-mile trip. I named the average-quality 5-rated picture "Beings of Fractals" for no reason I can give. The name came into my head as I searched for acceptable colors. The parameter file is just slow enough to make a download the method of choice to view the image. That download may be found on usenet at: and on the web at: The fractal weather today was mostly cloudy, with a temperature of 81F (27C). The conditions were ideal for the fractal cats, but they seemed more intent on watching me to see that I had listened to the scolding they gave me when I returned and had no intention of running off and leaving them again. The philosophy flourished in the spectacular ocean-side environment, though it will take a few days to organize the 11 pages of scattered notes. For now, I'm going to call it a day and organize a restful evening. Until tomorrow, take care, and if one fractal appears, can another be far behind? As vacation trips usually are, this one was almost as hectic as it was relaxing, but it was good to spend a week without having to turn on a computer. Now as for today's fractal picture . . . The network of filaments surrounding today's gaudy red midget reminds me of a ring of herring-bones. When I noticed the resemblance, the name "Herringbone Midget" came naturally. The scene is located near a shoreline of the newest 'parent' fractal, about halfway inland to a lake, in an area that appears non-critical and therefore unlikely to hold midgets. But in the world of the MandelbrotMix4 formula, midgets sometimes appear where least expected, and I'm learning to look deeper into areas where at first no midgets seem to exist. The parameter file of the picture renders in 8-1/2 minutes once the file is installed in your Fractint directory and rendering begun. The GIF image file downloads in less than 1 minute once one of the sites is contacted. Those sites are on the Usenet network at: alt.binaries.pictures.fractals and on the Web at the URL: The fractal weather today was despicable for cats who enjoy the outdoors. A steady soaking rain and temperature of 55F (13C) kept the fractal cats snug indoors, where they passed the day on their shelf by the window, watching the water and wishing the rain would stop. It never did. I have much philosophy backed up, but no time to organize it. Since I'll be busy the rest of this week getting the restless customers satisfied, it will likely be October before the next philosophical outburst strikes. But given enough time, it will strike, so keep posted to see what trouble I get myself into. For now, it's shut-down-and-good-night time at the olde fractal shoppe. Until next time, which will arrive in 24 hours, take care, and there could be more to fractals than meets the eye. The ring of dagger-like features surrounding the mis-shapen midget in today's picture reminds me of a row of shark's teeth. So that's what I named it. The strangely truncated midget exists in the infinite spiral fractal created by the expression Z^1.5+C, though not in the ground level of the spiral. And for a change I did not use the MandelbrotMix4 formula to produce the scene. The MandelbrotBC formula served up an image quite worthy of being declared FOTD. I rated the picture a slightly-above-average 6, mostly because I like the somewhat unusual color effect. The render time of 7 minutes is slightly below average however, making the download from: alt.binaries.pictures.fractals or from: somewhat more efficient. The fractal weather continued rainy and quite cool today, the wetness and temperature of 55F (13C) keeping the fractal cats cooped up indoors, sulking. The philosophy continues simmering, with several days yet to go before it is finished. And for now I'm going to shut down the fractal shoppe, feed the cats, and drop into my overstuffed chair to watch a bit of TV. Until tomorrow, take care, and you'll never know what you don't know about fractals. For those still seeking their own copy of Fractal Creations (after the grossly- overpriced copy Lincoln OOP Books now has on the Web disappears), I suggest a snail-phone survey of strategically-located OOP Bookstores in Canada - specifically, Toronto and Vancouver. Try using a Yahoo-type map, and focus your search in the vicinity of Univ of Toronto or Univ of British Columbia campuses, respectively.

At one time in late 1995, I found - by telephone - a single used bookstore near the Univ of Toronto campus that had 20 copies of Fractal Creations 2nd Ed, as well as 5-10 of each of the other Waite Group Press', SAMS', and MPS' (a/k/a M&T Books, a/k/a Henry Holt Pubs) other Fractal-oriented publications (with and without software) which were then "out-of-print" in the US.

As all were priced less than in the US - even after including the exchange rate - I splurged and purchased "one of each", and have not had to deal with the hassles of lengthy OOP searches, inflated prices, and rip-off online "auction" pricing since. As an example, brand-new, still-in-the-cellophane copies of Julian Sprott's now-classic Strange Attractors (complete with 3-D glasses and floppy disk with Sprott's source code) are still available in Toronto "used" bookstores for $25-30 US.

In 1995, I briefly awoke to realize that I had totally missed the Fractal Creations boat. All of a sudden, friends and colleagues were no longer wiling to loan their copy of FC, and all the 2nd Editions whose location I knew about had been stealthily put into hermetic storage. Prior to this date, there had almost always been at least one dog-eared & borrow-able copy floating around the Department or among friends.

After my initial search (1mo) turned up nothing, and after another 6mo waiting after "posting" the same Request (via Fax broadcast to a list of ~25 OOP vendors), I gave up, called the publisher and was told that they had sold all their remainders earlier that year to a wholesale vendor in Toronto. It was suggested that a call to bookstores in the Toronto area might prove fruitful.

Sure enough, it was. After about 5 phone calls, I found the used bookstore mentioned above - located a few blocks away from the Univ of Toronto campus - which had apparently bought the entire lot of Waite's remainders. They're bound to still be some Fractal Creations left in the area where I found mine, or which may have migrated with their owners to Graduate School in Vancouver, BC.

When I lived in Toronto (1991-1994), it was not at all uncommon to be able to find books and software which were "out of print", and completely unavailable, in the US. And the best part is that new books are - as often as not - priced less in Canada, even after including the exchange rate,  than in the US; used books are almost invariably less expensive than their counterparts in the US, even when they are completely unavailable stateside.

Hope this helps. Happy hunting.

Date: 27 Sep 2000 01:20:53 EDT I have a bug report and a question. 1. Bug report -- using version 20.0, I hacked fractint.cfg to add a 20480x15360 disk-video mode and a 4096x3072 one. When I first tried to use the former, I got an obscure error message about handles. I did a mental calculation and realized that though Fractint was on a disk drive with over 180 megabytes free, it would need over 300. With disk space freed up by moving files to the other drive, it worked. The error message needs improving I think. Also, it seems reasonable to allow the user to specify where to put temp files, so people with multiple hard drives and/or large removable r/w media can pick the most convenient place. These are more interface issue and feature request than bug. The bug happened with the latter disk-video mode, where a tesseral image was "completed" according to all indications, but the image that I got when I then hit 's' was only 2048x1536 and the fourth and part of the third tesseral quadrant were not, in fact, completed. 2. Question -- what's the status of truecolor development? I haven't heard anything about it in ages and version 20.0 is getting stale. It's a year old! All in all, Fractint is a great program though -- 20.0 has few bugs and no showstoppers that I've seen, and the evolver is very cool. When I combine it with this vring formula (or whatever it was) that I found on a Web site, it produces the weirdest Mandelbrots I've ever seen. _________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com. It has none of the intricacy that surrounds the usual midgets. It has instead a smoothness that is rarely seen in the world of fractals. The obvious sine-wave shape inspired the name; the rating of 6 is my own decision. The object in the image is the 'Seahorse Valley' of the (-Z)^1.1+C Mandeloid, viewed from an oblique orientation closest to the Elliptic direction. The new formula, multirot-XZ-YW-min, is a generalized version of the old multirot-XZ-YW, which calculates (-Z) and takes advantage of the additional variable parameter entries. With a render time of a little under 3 minutes, the parameter file is slightly slow -- just slow enough to make a download of the GIF image the better choice. The download may be found on Usenet at: alt.binaries.pictures.fractals and on the Web at: The fractal weather today was near perfect, with total sunshine and a temperature of 69F (20.5C), which was completely perfect for the fractal cats. It was unfortunate for the cats that I had so little time to let them run free, but they thoroughly enjoyed themselves in the little time they did have outdoors. The fractosophy continued simmering, and will not be fully cooked until sometime next week. For now, it's time to shut the place down and call it a night. The exact expression that was calculated to create the image is -11Z^(-1.2)-Z^(-12)+(1/C). The parent fractal is better seen than described. I might add that it comes in two large but separate sections, one of which contains a 'fan', and is filled with midgets. Today's scene is located in a shallow valley across a wide bay from the edge of the fan. I named the picture "Fractal Textures" when I noticed the unusually textured features surrounding the central midget. I rated the picture a 6 when I decided it was just the slightest above FOTD average, (which is not that high to start). Yes, I realize that the 18 minute render time is slow, so living up to my nickname of 'James the Merciful', I have posted the GIF file of the image to the binary Usenet group: alt.binaries.pictures.fractals The image is also available on the Web at: The fractal weather today was once again perfect, with sunny skies and a temperature of 74F (23C); and once again I was too busy to give the fractal cats their customary time outdoors. Forced to satisfy themselves with a mere 20 minutes, they passed the afternoon on their shelf by the window, watching and wishing. However they cheered up quite a bit this evening when I divided a can of tuna between them. There was too much work to allow philosophy this day. I expect little slack until the middle of next week, but the philosophical wisdom is building, and when it finally breaks loose, who knows what may happen. All that will happen now however is that I'll relax for the rest of the evening, and comfort the cats as I watch the telly. Until tomorrow, take much care, and beware of hit and run fractals. It's a lively scene, reminiscent of the heaving earth at the time the planet was still molten, though instead of fiery reds the scene boasts an incongruous palette of serene deep blues. As I examined the picture, I had the impression of a great thing happening. I decided that the midget, or perhaps the earth itself, was just being born. I named the picture "A Fractal Birthing". The exponent of Z in today's scene is 1.2. As exponents of Z fall farther below 2, the midgets in the Mandeloids become progressively more difficult to find, not only because they become much smaller, but also because they are not surrounded by the symmetrical features that point to pure quadratic midgets. By the time the exponent drops to 1.5, the midgets are nearly impossible to locate, so finding a Mandel midget in the fractal created by an exponent of 1.2 is a real achievement. Actually, the only midget I could find was the one on the negative tail. Yes, I realize that the Z^1.2+C Mandeloid has no negative tail, but this is only when the ground floor of the infinite spiral is examined. The MandelbrotBC formula, which I used to calculate today's scene, draws the more remote parts of the spiral, and it is in these remote parts of the spiral that a kind of tail exists. Since the tail zig-zags off in a northeast direction, it would be more appropriate to call it a positive tail. But regardless of what it is called, the tail has one very prominent midget on it. This midget appears in today's FOTD, which I rated a 7. The parameter file's render time of 15 minutes is nearly totally expended on calculating the shoreline of the high-maxiter midget. The unusually high maxiter of 250,000 is needed to sharply define the edges of the midget, which become quite diffuse at a lower maxiter. The image file has been posted as always to Usenet at: alt.binaries.pictures.fractals and to the Web at: The fractal weather today here at fractal central was once again perfect, with totally clear skies and a temperature of 68F (20C). The fractal cats approved of the conditions by spending nearly an hour lounging in the yard. With much work and housebound cats, I had no time to write philosophy today. But the time of the revelation draws ever closer, so keep checking for imminent enlightenment. (IMO of course.) For this evening, the fractal shoppe is now closing. But it will open again tomorrow, with another FOTD and at least a few words about the image. Until then, take much care, and two fractals at bedtime guarantee a good night's sleep. I dropped by Spanky just after discovering this bug to see if a newer version was available (and to track down the link to the bug list page). It still listed 20.0 as the latest version. I'll check again in a mo, but it seems you might have a prerelease development version. In that case, reproducing the bug may require using 20.0. (Of course, if so, this might mean it got fixed...) >I have a version that can use truecolor. Unless there are specific Xfractint questions I always use the DOS version. The DOS developer's version is currently at version 20.1. I incremented the version number so that backwards compatibility for inside=fmod would work. Date: 29 Sep 2000 14:14:38 -0700 (PDT) I was a Fractint fanatic when I was running DOS, many moons ago. Since leaving DOS behind and moving to Linux a number of years ago, I've not had a fractalling fix; the duotone blue/black fractals that xfractint provides in 32 bpp colour are a non-starter. Thus I scan this list, hoping against hope, that I'll see an announcement that a native Linux version of Fractint is available. I have heard rumblings and rumours that such a beast was contemplated. If indeed my Holy Grail is in development, would some kind genius/developer (aren't they the same?) please let us Linux fractint fanatics know? A while back, there was talk on the list about a project to port the Fractal Creations manuscript from its current format (MS Word, I believe) to HTML. At t hat time I had volunteered to co-ordinate/participate in such a project but never heard anything back, as I had some spare time and copies of both editions of Fractal Creations. I'm hoping to have them all processed and available for viewing by tomorrow evening. Next year I'll just include in the contest schedule a week between the entry period closing and the entries being posted, so nobody will be kept in suspense. :) I'm impressed with the variety of entries this year, and I think the categories worked very well; there's a more even division of entries than in previous years. For the image I turned to my archives and a fractal several months old. The IkeMandNewt formula that created today's image is included in the fractint.frm file. It was written in 1993 by Ron Barnett, and is most certainly the source of my series of 12 MandNewt formulae. I named the picture "An Odd Scene" because it reminds me of a series of bizarre structures sitting alone and forgotten on some lost planet, doing strange, mysterious things. The silhouetted objects may have been constructed by alien intelligences; they may be natural formations -- we'll never know. The picture rates an average 5. I wanted to rate it higher, but then I remembered that it has already failed once to qualify for FOTD. At a render time of under 2 minutes, the parameter file is as efficient as downloading the image file from: or from: The fractal weather today was once again perfect, with sunny skies and a temperature of 70F (21C) that pleased the fractal cats. Unfortunately, I had little time to give them a proper outing, but I made it up to them by treating them to a can of tuna. As would be expected under such conditions, the philosophical ponderings went nowhere today, but next week should be different. For tonight, it's time to shut down the Fractal Central and call it a day. Until tomorrow, take care, and when questioned, claim the fractal did it. This isn't true. passes= is forced to passes=1 if a disk-video mode won't fit in memory, and therefore uses the disk. (I think this can be improved upon, by making disk-video act like automated use of divide-and-conquer in that case, incidentally. Also, since even a 32768x256 strip of the image can fit in a modern machine's RAM easily, even the existing system should allow guessing in truly "disk" disk-video -- except if the image strip affected on a single line of the first pass won't fit in RAM. Actually it might do this -- I don't know. All I have observed is that passes=t will be changed to passes=1 if disk-video doesn't fit in memory.) When I ran that 4096x3072 one, it used tesseral. _________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com.
