I've found the best way to order these Canadian cds is directly from Canadian cd shops. You can call HMV in Toronto 1-800 567-8468 or Montreal 1-800-567-2442 or you can order on the net from A&B Sound in Vancouver www.absound.ca I have used both of these places with very good results. Keep in mind when you call HMV you are calling directly onto the sales floor so you end up talking to whoever happens to pick up the phone. I've found if I say right away that I'm calling from California and want to do a mail order they pay attention... Also the Canadian dollar is $.60 US so (if you are calling from the US) you are getting 40% off whatever price they quote!! Good luck. As far as I know, all the Polygram MWH cds are still in print in Canada. You can also get Greatest Hats (different from the US release) and Ivan's The Spell (still one of my favorite cds after a whole year), but you can only get the 2fer from Laura (as far as I know) on this list. Sperbadgirls has got some problems too. I though at least Open Your Eyes would be great, but I was disappointed. I had heard Tox's clip, and it played the only good part to the whole song. That is my opinion...thank you. Aaron, you have made a common mistake about Ivan. He is not exactly a band member in some rock group. Ivan created MWH and then basically hired his brothers (and a few others) to help perform his creations. MWH was more of a vehicle to present his art. It may be, that lately he sees some limits in what MWH can do for his work and has opted to simply use his name. (arguably, a more honest approach).I like The Spell. It is a well rounded album and shows that Ivan has matured as an artist. Let's not forget how different PGTW was from MWH's previous releases. He is always exploring music and in a progressive fashion. I haven't heard him live yet but I'll try tomorrow. Maybe this concert was a poor rendition of the album? In any case, reserve your judgement on the solo Ivan for when you hear the studio album. Let's not jump all over Aaron, I kind of know where he's coming from. Whereas I like 'The Spell', I happen to love the MWH material. I'm sure a lot of people on the list would agree. Aaron just happens to hate the new stuff. I think the fact of the matter, though, is that Ivan is desperately trying to escape being equated with MWH. To some significant extent, he's trying to forge ahead with his new stuff, and he doesn't want to look back. That's why his CD is pretty different than what we expected it to be at first, and that's probably why he has (for now!) refused to give us a concert as MWH. But that's his prerogative. Maybe the guy got bored with MWH (although I personally cannot grasp the reason for this - there was genius in that work.) Maybe every second phrase from people around him at the time was 'MWH', and he got sick of hearing that. Maybe he doesn't think he was evolving as a musical artist, and wants to travel different, more exciting avenues. Who knows? When I went to see Ivan last 'summer'(with Tom, Dave, Laura, Trena, and Claude from the list), I remember the DJ-guy asking the audience who was headlining that night right before Ivan came on stage. What I heard was "Men Without Hats!" Not one person said "Ivan!" I think he's finding that he cannot easily separate himself from MWH, and that bugs him. Sooner or later, I think he's going to have to go back to it if he wishes to attain the level of success of his MWH days...but only if he thinks he'll enjoy the experience. Well, everyone knows who "Men Without Hats" is and it is natural that Ivan will be referred to as the guy in Men Without Hats. In my opinion, Ivan = Men Without Hats isn't true. There is a reason why Ivan is Ivan and Ivan will be Men Without Hats when they release their new album. It is like saying The Beatles are opening up when Paul McCartney is singing. About wishing to attain the lebvel of success MWH did, I think he has a good chance with today's teenagers (that seems to be the majority of the radio audience) since most of them weren't conscious of music back in '82 anyway. It is us "vetrans" who remember him as the Pop Goes The World/Saftey Dance guy and are nostalgic for the electronic RoY days. Which brings a question to mind, Why do we tend to absolutley adore RoY and hardly anything else? When I say hardly, I mean compared to the other albums whether we like them or not, RoY stands out by a landslide. I remember when the list members came back from their trip to Montreal last summer and one of them mentioned Colin was surprised to see everyone interested in only the RoY demos. Could it be part of that early 80s nostalgia? Back on topic, what I remember back in the RoY days is when they would announce a song by MWH, strangely they would say "Ivan and Men Without Hats" or "Ivan without a hat". This could be where this comes from if Ivan is in fact trying to seperate his solo work from MWH. Maybe that's why he wears a hat on stage? It sounds funny but it could be. ----- I was listening to the RoY demos (yes yes I do prefer them over the Folk3 demos except for WDTBG but that's another story) last night and realized how greatly they sound european. I mean to say that they sound like they were from a european electronic band. Even the Folk1 songs have that feel to them but not the preceeding albums. I've just finished hearing the Ivan live stuff and I am disappointed too. The quality of this recording is very poor. I'm not commenting on Richard's work, I'm sure he has done his usual good job in reproducing the mp3's. The music, though, is unbalanced at times, fading in and out and very noisy. Certainly, it gives us a chance to hear what Ivan is doing lately but it's not a pleasing experience to play these. Also, that's got to be the worst rendition of PGTW I've ever heard. And that's another good point, which falls in the same category as 'playing the game'. A couple of weeks ago, Ivan was featured in a Montreal Gazette article. The article made it sound as though Ivan wanted to forge ahead with his career, and wanted to downplay his MWH past (although he is proud of it). Ironically, the Gazette printed a picture of Ivan in his Montreal studio bathroom whose walls just happen to be lined with 'Rhythm of Youth' LP's. Financially, Ivan needs us to know he was once the founder of MWH, but artistically he would rather we forget it. And that's his catch-22 dilemma. What I'm worried about is the fact that I don't really believe you can achieve fan loyalty in the dance music/techno business, and if it's possible, few have achieved it. 'Open your Eyes' is a very good song, and it received a lot of airplay here in the province of Quebec. Yet, Ivan's 'The Spell' is not roaring up the charts. Even more disturbing, I don't think he's becoming any more popular because of the song. Yes, dance/techno is probably where the youth is at, but of all the musical categories, it is the one with the most 'one-hit wonders'. However, when you play rock, pop, etc., the chances are on your side that if you get that one big hit, a good porion of the fans will stick around for the long haul. We are living proof of that. I find "The Spell" pretty average (though I really dig 1972). It just isn't worth it to me to spend all the money and effort to get to the show and not hear "Mother's Opinion" ,"Walk on Water", etc. I hope that the show does go off, and that many fans do get to attend and that it does get videotaped. I thought the idea to make some sort of documentary was also a cool idea, with people taping their pilgrimages the whole way. I am sure that someone could put all of the tapes together. If he did, I think the music would sound more like what is on the dance radio stations (the cheesy euro crap) and be repetitive than the pop and hiphop on the CD. For me, it shows on the CD that he is trying some styles he likes. I wonder if Ivan is interested in remixing? I bought two tickets and told my wife she was going with me whether she wanted to or not. She did - and she's been a bigger Kiss fan since that night than I ever had been at the height of my own Kissmania in the late 70s and early 80s. And all of this happened to her in her early 20s. It's not just appealing to kids. I used to argue this point with the idiot adults when I was a kid but, because I was a kid, I was unable to prove the point. I think Forever is the exceptional track, and it's _very_ good, but the album as a whole is filled with songs that just don't interest me or "stick with" me a few minutes later. Open Your Eyes, Superbadgirls, The Spell, and occasionally www and You are pleasant enough to listen to, but they're nothing really special, and the remaining tracks don't even need mentioning.=20 The whole album has this sort of "flat" sound to it - for me comparing Ivan to (earlier, especially) Men Without Hats is like comparing Pet Shop Boys to Erasure: the former have very complex orchestrations, and sometimes nice musical ideas, but they really lack the "spunk" or "life"=20 that make the latter so enjoyable to listen to. It's like Ivan and PSB are "too refined" or something; the kernel ideas get buried under layers and layers of coating, until you're kept so far away from them that it's really sterile. Then again, I wasn't overly impressed with "Sideways", so, go ahead and write me off as "unwilling to evolve" or something if you want. (I think the process from Folk of the 80's EP through PGTW was evolution, and there was great music through that whole period.) However, the fact that Ivan performed at Whiskey Saigon (a club) on Sunday night is interesting. Sunday nights, CFNY broadcasts from there and it's all retro 80s. So according to our discussion about Ivan possibly trying to prevent people from associating him with MWH, this is a major contradiction! :D I used to listen to their broadcast from Whiskey Saigon but they always play the exact same songs (sometimes almost in the same order!) so I grew tired of it. From Fot80s to PGTW, there is clear evidence of an evolution occurring in Ivan's musical abilities and development as an artist. However, after PGTW, there have only been shifts in style and direction. But I really cannot say that this is so bad. I think Ivan really went "over the top" with PGTW just as the Beatles did with "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band". He even said in one of the interviews on the video compilation that it was like his own "Sgt. Pepper...". The Beatles had a hard time trying to top that album afterwards - and whether "Abbey Road" did or did not is debatable. I believe that this played a large role in the group's ultimate demise. I think Pink Floyd has reached a similar pinnacle with the release of the "Pulse" concert video in 1995. I literally don't know how they or anyone else can do any more on a stage than what they did during that particular Earls Court appearance. If they retired now I'd not mind it a bit. "Pulse" on video has left me completely fulfilled and satisfied at least on the Pink Floyd level. Now Ivan's a bit different. He satisfied me musically with PGTW but he's not produced a lot of other product in the nearly two decades that he's been around to entertain us - but the CDs being produced by the fine folks on this list are kindof helping me deal with that. There is still no officially released, professional quality video compilation available. There are still no live shows from the PGTW, 21st Century, and Sideways tours around to be heard. There's only one professionally filmed concert video to be seen - which is damn good, but still only representative of a slice of the MWH/Ivan career. I would love to see a MWH/Ivan career documentary with vintage video from the RoY tour and before that even. Where all that was leading I don't know, but... :-) My biggest compliment for PGTW is that it's cohesive in both style and concept from beginning to end. My biggest complaint for The Spell is that it's "all over the board". I simply cannot shift my moods as fast as The Spell shifts its, in order to enjoy it the way I do PGTW or anything that came before. My thoughts on the show, well, Ivan doesn't seem to be much of a talker! :) I have never seen this show before (I'm not a big sports fan so the only time I watch TSN is during the World Cup ) so I might not have a good perception of it. I think it's a talk show where celebrities come on and give their views on sports events of the week. On today's show Ivan was on, an actress I do not know, and a former Hamilton Wildcats football player/wrestler. He seemed to be the only one who was energetic ont he show :) I don't want to sound terrible but the topics were not very thought provoking. As for Ivan, we don't learn anything about him except that he is for women going topless (law recently passed here in Toronto)--don't take this out of context but I think he is for it as in equality (in case youa re wonderign what that has to do with sports events, they were referring to the 16-yr old tennis player who posed very provacatively for Sports Illustrated). They showed a clip of the "Superbadgirls" video. I haven't seen the video but I LIKE IT SO FAR! I like how the picture moves right to left. Hurts my eyes but it seems to fit the song!! :) Ivan looked different in this show than in the video where fans from this list met Ivan in Montreal. On TSN, Ivan's face was rounder. Camera tricks?! :) At the end, they breifly mentioned Ivan's CD and single 1972. I think there is a mix-up, at first I thought Ivan said there was a cd single out but I think he meant the latest track is "1972". Funny how he didn't call it "1972 (Slippin' Away)" :) As for the news about Ivan's new material being made on his MWH synth--LOVE IT!!! I can't wait to hear what he creates from it!!! (Also with the boisterous personality of that pro-wrestler no one could hardly get a word in edgewise anyway!) The purpose of "Off The Record" is not sports events of the week but more like social issues concerning sports. I've seen the show a few times now and they have a wide range of guests like Pierre Burton and the lead singer of Pursuit of Happiness. The comment he made about topless women was to point out that people seem overly ashamed of their bodies and perhaps that the topic of conversation was a little silly or trite. I also liked the comment he made about the goalies fighting and how it was just their way of male bonding! (I had to laugh). At the end they were discussing sexual aspects in sports and at the end you can just barely hear him say something about the fact that all sports involve sexual connotations because most of the time it involves putting "things into holes"!!! Again, I had to laugh. Despite Ivan having to put up with some pretty trivial topics, he seemed to have a lot of fun and was laughing quite a bit. After hearing some of "Superbadgirls", the actress was genuinely impressed and gave Ivan several compliments. How's your copy of this show Daniele, mine is fairly good but "could be better". I also got good news today regarding Ivan. When Ivan mentioned "1972" as a single I thought I take a stroll down the block to HMV and see if they could at least order the singles for me. They couldn't. Then the guy there says "btw, did you know Ivan is playing at the Republik on April 17?" The Republik is a nightclub for alternative bands some four blocks from my place! Woohoo! I simply adored them in elementary school (I'm the same age as you) and by the time they lost the makeup, I was losing interest. I came to mock them during my "punk rock" years- there was a Zildjian ad w/ peter Chris stating "this is serious music" that I turned into a not-so-flattering t-shirt. After I got a little more open-minded, I returned to listening to them and playing the music. "Firehouse" is still one of my faves to just wail along with my guitar. A marketing exercise? Hardly. Just 4 hardworking guys. I caught a few minutes of Jerry Cantrell talking about how he loved Kiss and they are the reason he is in music. I just bought a used "Kiss Meets the Phantom of The Amusement Park" (or whatever the actual title is) video and fondly recalled when it was on network tv in the 70s (ok, this could have been marketing...). I have seen Strutter (very good!) and Firehouse (not as good) as they occassionally swing through here. There is a short article about who (and what happened to them) the replacements for the original band members were in the newest issue of Maxim magazine. I still think it was weird that the guy from Mr. Mister was supposed to play with them (immediately before Bruce Kubiak joined). There are a million bands that owe a great debt to Kiss (one of them, Insane Clown Posse was here a couple nites ago).... The ability to do so attests to the artist's creativity and musical eclecticism. The inability to stay to a single style (which Ivan can certainly do if he wanted to) is a sign of musical immaturity. The choice to go all over on a single album speaks of the artist's courage and pioneering spirit, unafraid to experiment and drawn by whatever he might find. I wouldn't want Ivan to make another PGTW. One is enough for me. At times, listening to it, I am whisked to another place, and I am part of Johnny and Jenny's life (although actually they are part of ours). I sometimes weep for the love and joy and understanding that went into it. Other times, I find it annoying because it's all about the same thing. Where's the variety of styles, the brave experimentation of the hats? It's all a matter of mood, really. And I can't blame Ivan for wanting to separate himself from his roots, but recognizing the need to keep them. It's paradoxical that artists want to always best their previous efforts. What was a pinnacle yesterday becomes an expectation today and almost embarrassing tomorrow. When I look back at my own old work, I see a lot of enthusiasm, but not much focus. Looking at my current work, I can see a lot of maturity and thought. When I show my work to someone, I'd prefer to show them my most recent stuff, which has all the years of experience going into it. I almost feel apologetic for my older stuff. I didn't get a chance to catch the whole show (because of editing an upcoming World Cup promotion for Soccer Saturday, Apr. 11)but will check out the tape today. Heard that the show was bombing but, that's the way talk shows go. I ran into Ivan coming out of the studio and only had time for quick personal small talk has he was on his way out to the Life Channel or something and I had to get back into edit suite. My thoughts on the show, well, Ivan doesn't seem to be much of a talker! :) I have never seen this show before (I'm not a big sports fan so the only time I watch TSN is during the World Cup ) so I might not have a good perception of it. I think it's a talk show where celebrities come on and give their views on sports events of the week. On today's show Ivan was on, an actress I do not know, and a former Hamilton Wildcats football player/wrestler. He seemed to be the only one who was energetic ont he show :) I don't want to sound terrible but the topics were not very thought provoking. Camera tricks?! :) At the end, they breifly mentioned Ivan's CD and single 1972. I think there is a mix-up, at first I thought Ivan said there was a cd single out but I think he meant the latest track is "1972". Funny how he didn't call it "1972 (Slippin' Away)" :) As for the news about Ivan's new material being made on his MWH synth--LOVE IT!!! I can't wait to hear what he creates from it!!! One point he made was that the variety of sounds available in the newest technology and the ease with which it is used allows him great flexability. Let's do it that way. I can no longer count how many times I've copied my MWH video collection for people on this list. Also, I intend to soon be in the market to buy an S-VHS VCR. It has chroma/luma video inputs that will work beautifully with my Commodore 128 which has chroma/luma video outputs. I want to write programs that draw random, coloured graphic patterns and use them as video source material for when the time comes that I can release my entire life's collection of sound art and music on a video format. It's kinda boring listening to a VHS tape with no picture. Since the format supports video information as well as superb-sounding audio, I see no sense in not creating something visual to accompany the aural. They play website requests from time to time, so I thought it wouldn't hurt to do this. I asked for superbadgirls or 1972 (since I already have Open your Eyes on tape). So anybody who gets Muchmusic, watch for this! Also, is it just me or at the beginning of Monday's "Off the Record" show, did the host say Ivan would be performing "later on in the show"? I could swear I heard him say that, but there was no performance... I will have to watch the tape again to see if I was just hearing things... ;) And one last thing.... last night right before "pop up video" started on Muchmusic, there was a 30 second commercial for THE SPELL album! Yes, and now a 20+ minute film has been released on video with Pink Floyd performing an early version of that song (and one other) in January 1967. It's a professionally made film of the band in a small studio 2-3 weeks before EMI signed them to a record deal - and Syd Barrett is in it playing lead guitar. There is also a companion CD. I have both. Have you ever heard Voivod's version of "Astronomy Domine"? It's very good, I think. I always liked "Atom Heart Mother" and "Meddle". They seem to be a pair - each having a full-side-length piece and all. I've got a tape of their 1971 live performance on the BBC. All of her albums were finally released by Ryko last yearon CD in wonderfully remastered form. I suggest you find a copy of her 1996 release, "Rising", her "Walking On Thin Ice" compilation, and her first album with John in '68, "Unfinished Music, No. 1: Two Virgins". If you like you can also try out their "Wedding Album" on CD. And if you're feeling really brave, get "Unfinished Music, No. 2: Life With The Lions", "Yoko Ono / Plastic Ono Band", and "Fly". I really love that early, noisy stuff where she screeches like a cat in pain or heat or whatever, but most people cannot stand it. Unfortunately, all too often, people who've heard that end up dismissing everything she's ever done since. In all honesty, everything she's done from 1972 until today has been very musical in nature and not noisy at all. Check out "Death Of Samantha" from the compilation CD and/or 1972's "Approximately Infinite Universe". A lot of people can't handle hearing her sing with her Japanese voice. When the Beatles spoke, it was obvious they were from England, however when they sang nobody could tell. I'm glad you asked me why I don't like "In The 21st Century". It's a question I've asked myself ever since I bought it. It's also a question I've never really answered. But having been asked publicly, I guess now is the time I should try. Keep in mind that I'm typing this in nearly a stream-of-consciousness manner. I really think I was predisposed to not liking that particular CD in large part because of how it came to be in my possession. In 1991, I and my girlfriend (who is now my wife) were visiting a friend I knew from where I was working at the time. This guy was like me in a lot of ways - i.e. he understood that there had been a thing called "New Romance" in the early 80s and he also owned a lot of CDs. There's more to it than that but those are the first things which come to mind as I type. While browsing through his CDs, I was startled to see a Men Without Hats CD of which I'd not previously heard. I immediately removed it from his shelf and examined it. I asked him about it and the first thing out of his mouth was that he'd bought it on name recognition alone when he'd seen it for sale in a store but it had disappointed him becasuse it wasn't as good as the earlier Men Without Hats albums that he'd heard and liked before. He was so disappointed by it that he saw my enthusiasm about it as a sure sign that he could make a few bucks by selling it instead of being faced with the having to keep it around for awhile longer. He said I could have it for $5.00. I couldn't refuse that and bought it on the spot - knowing in advance not to expect it to be a very good CD, based upon his opinion which I didn't entirely dismiss in most cases. I took it home and listened to it and, quite honestly, couldn't hear anything in it that was interesting to me either. I was most displeased by the lack of even a remote similarity to the original Safety Dance by the track titled "Safety Dance 1990" or whatever it's called. That was another mark against it which I've never gotten over. More than anything else, when I think of that album, I immediately think of it as "that album with the bad version of 'Safety Dance' tacked onto the end of it". I also don't particularly like the artwork on the cover from the style on down to the dismal, dull pastel colours. It's just a very unattractive looking CD to me. Overall the album to me is just one big bore. I do happen to like "Hey Men", "S.O.S." and the title track quite a bit but other than that there's not a lot of really great music on it, IMHO. The guy who had it before me didn't like and was willing to sell it to me for a measly 5 bucks as soon as I'd seen it for the first time. I dunno. It just got off with a really bad start as far as I'm concerned and there's nothing about it that has ever convinced me to think more highly of it than I did the first time I played it. Now, about "Sideways"... I just knew somebody was going to comment about that album in the same way I commented about the one aforementioned. I would almost be willing to go along with you about "Sideways" if it weren't for the fact that it proves beyond a shadow of a doubt that synthpop bands can do serious, loud rock-n-roll if they want to. It is too often a common misconception for people who don't like synth pop to curse it as being gutless, hopeless and lame. But when a synthpop band turns around and records a heavy rock album - and especially one as good as "Sideways" - it gives me all the proof I ever need should I ever get into one of those stupid synth-vs.-guitar arguments with people that bands like Men Without Hats aren't gutless! If anything, it shows just how truly limited is the scope of most any heavy metal band that ever existed. While Men Without Hats can change course and do a heavy rock album, I guarantee you that bands like Motley Crue, Metallica, AC/DC, ad nauseum could never turn around and do a synthpop album - so who's the more versatile? Who's the more capable? Who's the more musically accomplished? It's a lot like Ministry. They started out as a type of Curish light synthpop group with happy melodies - although pitifully morbid lyrics, if I recall correctly - but within 5 years time converted into this hideous thing that could churn out songs like "Stigmata". I think Ministry took it a bit too far for a bit too long, but at least Men Without Hats were able to do it very well just one time to prove that they really could do it when nobody before thought that they could. Plus, I consider "Sideways" to be more of a Stefan album than an Ivan album. That gives it a completely fresh, new spirit and personality which "In The 21st Century" does not have. Int21C bores me. And that's one thing I doubt anyone with ears to hear can say about "Sideways". It might turn some or a lot of people off, but I really doubt they find it to be a boring album. I bought it at a used CD store last summer. Listening to it today, aside from "SOS" and "In The 21st Century" and the "new" Safety Dance, it sounds like whiny protest music from the 60s. Some of the other tracks are good (I forget the name but it's the one where he mentions his babysitter and four lads from Liverpool) and "Eloise & I" (the fast one). Since then I only lsitneed to it about three or four times only because I am more interested in electronic music. When "Hey Men" came out I did not like it but everyone else (who wasn't a fan) did! :D I heard that Safety Dance was nothing like the original so I was ready for that and I like it in a non-safety dance sort of way (I love the original). This applies to "Folk of the 80s Part 3". When I bouight it, it was when the "Freeways" EP got old. I found the two in a bargin bin and bought them jsut so I could have all of Men Without Hats' albums (I was probalby 10 or 12 years old). So I quickly listneed tot he tracks and found it was not like RoY so it was never played again until i subscribed to this list! "freeways" sounded too early 80s for me and I only liked "Modern(e) Dancing" and "Freeways" until this list...I gave them a chance and now I like them. "Pop Goes The World" was a similar experience except I like that album a lot more. I taped it from a tape I borrowed from the library (I'll buy the CD soon, don't worry). "Walk On Water" was played on CFNY a few times and "O Sole Mio" was played on the radio frequently. I am wondering why it is only "Safety Dance" and "Pop goes The World" that gets recognized. I still like "O Sole Mio" for Ivan's commanding sounding voice. I'd like to hypothesize that single, EP, and LP come from the era of vinyl.. where a single would typically be pressed on a 7" disc. Then, for a longer playing time, one could press a 10" disc, which was "extended play" (from the amount of time on a single). And of course LP for 12" discs with even more space on them. I further hypothesize that short singles and mixes fit on 7" discs, while longer remixes and such required a full 12" disc - thus the related terms for various versions of songs. Now, those terms may refer more to the 'style' of a mix than its length, but I'd argue that originally those styles developed because of the space limitations of each format. I'd certainly be interested to hear any comments about these ideas, since I've never heard from anyone who "knows"... It was a common practice, moreso in the UK than in the US, in the 1960s to release not just albums and singles but also "extended play" singles which featured two songs per side instead of just one. Since Fot80s featured only 4 songs, it is an EP. The 1980s saw the emergence of the "mini-LP" as well which typically featured four songs per side. U2's "Under A Blood Red Sky" is a mini-album featuring 8 live tracks, however, their US release "Wide Awake In America" featuring 2 live tracks on side one and 2 studio outtakes on side two is only an EP. An oddity in all of this is the case of The Beatles' "Magical Mystery Tour" soundtrack which was issued as an album in the US in November 1967 but as a double-EP set in the UK. The US album featured the six songs from the soundtrack on side A and 5 songs culled from various current singles' A-sides and B-sides which had nothing at all to do with the film by the same name. The UK 2EP set spread the 6 songs from the film over four disc sides, two songs on one side of each disc and one on each of the other sides. The songs on the B-side of the US album remained only available as singles in the UK until 1976 when the US album version was also released in the UK to, I suppose, end a lot of frustration. The emergence of the CD-single has really muddied the waters now because all songs are on just one side and that side can contain 1,2,3,4,5,6,7, ad nauseum, remixes of the same song plus a couple of extra bonus tracks and maybe an interview segment or whatever. They're still CD-singles though unless labeled otherwise by the marketer. It's a mess. Thanks Woody,Yes, I think most people would agree with that interpretation. This makes sense, especially where songs are all four minutes long (e.g.. the pop world). Perhaps not so much elsewhere where 1 song/track can be as long as 22 minutes! (And still be known as an LP). The reason this was on my mind was that I'm trying to archive the cover art for MWH and trying to show where the art appears. I'm unsure whether to be using 45/EP/LP or 7"/10"/12" or both in order to be as clear as possible. Never mind the terms of CD/CD single/CD Extended Play (or whatever Moonbeam is?) Date: 09 Apr 1998 17:17:43 -0700 Single = a record having one short track on each side Extended Play (EP) = a record with a playing time of 6-8 minutes (presumably per side). Since the EP was coined in the 50's it probably came about when Jazz singles could no longer fit onto a single 7" side. Technically speaking, FOTE would qualify as an EP even though it's actually 2 songs per side making up the 8 minutes. I think the key here is that the music contained on an ep is for all practical purposes an original piece of work. Where as a maxi-single would involve some sort of alteration of the 2-track source (i.e. remix, extended mix, etc. - including multiple versions). Also keep in mind that it was very common for an LP to run 25 minutes with 8-10 songs. (side note: In today's digital age I'm almost offended when a CD-album runs less than 60 minutes, but 60 minutes on a single vinyl record sounds like crap.) A long-player is specifically a 331/3 RPM record. It has nothing to do with the amount of music contained, but obviously was invented to provide artists with a medium that can virtually mimic continuity (i.e. a classical concert performance doesn't sound all that great on 5 78's). An "album" by the way is one or more LP's stored in the same package. So a 2-track 10-minute 331/3 RPM record technically would be an LP, but obviously this was a device designed for radio play when the 7" 45 was going away, and the album was commonly used to DJ - you can just imagine how crazy it must have been when someone accidently... (insert your own sarcastic musical reference here). How would I apply these terms to the digital age? Pretty much the same way, except that an LP would be anything longer than an EP (and I might bump the EP margin up a bit to around 30 minutes (since there aren't a whole lot of 3 minute songs being written these days) total playing time assuming there weren't 6 or more tracks involved) and there are no more sides (until DVD makes it's mark in the music world). A personal distinction I like to add when determining the difference between an EP and a single, is was the context of the EP "intended" to be a stand-alone work or was it intended a device to promote the sale of some other work. In other words, the Safety Dance was specifically sold with the intent of selling more copies of ROY. Of course this line gets blury all the time like "I Got The Message" which features 2 non-album cuts on the B-side (probably intended with a dual purpose in mind, the a-side for the new comers - a single, and the b-sides for the fans - an ep). Oh what will we call it when DVD takes over and can give us the entire Beatles catalogue on a 2 disc set? Like something like that would ever be marketed! The terms themselves refer to amount of "play" whether it be long or extended. The # of tracks then becomes irrelevant. I.e. a symphony containing 1 track on each side of a record and totaling 45 minutes is still an LP. The other extreme does conflict with a time definition, since 12 tracks totaling 15 minutes would then be an EP but I think this example is so rare that we probably don't need to consider it. It would seem, in any case, that most people see FOTE and Freeways as EP's. How we all seem to be without direction in our lives, just meandering around in circles, not really getting anywhere or accomplishing anything with the gifts we've been given. And it isn't until something disastrous happens in our lives that we say "uh oh" and finally look at our lives objectively. If we had been paying attention in the first place, we could have avoided or at least minimized much of the hurt that befalls us, but we're too busy filling our heads with meaningless things to take the time to notice the important things like where we're going. Like in Alice in Wonderland, Alice asks the Cheshire Cat which way to go. The cat asks where she wants to get to. Alice says she doesn't know, and the cat replies that in that case, any road will take you there. Another aspect of the song is Ivan's musical career. The boys had made a hit, but got nowhere with it. It got them fame, and almost a major award, but the money all went elsewhere. For all their efforts and all their talent and all the things their heads were filled with, they may as well have been walking in circles. We're beginning to get into some of the reasons why FOTE3 is my favorite hats album... And when you're young, you have lots of strange crazy ideas that have little grounding in reality - "our heads were filled with things that didn't matter anyway" - but you just don't care, it doesn't bother you. I've always thought the song was about school. "We walked around in circles singing, whohuhoh", "our heads were filled with things that didn't matter anyway". Sometimes Ivan steps into the teacher persona and says things like "okay, third time, everybody sing ...". Everything is mooving smoothly. To this day it is a 10 songs deal. I'm still wating for some confirmations from you guys (Myke). Most of the communications are done in private to make it has some sort of surprise. I'm trying to get some "known" artists to contribute to the CD. For those on the list who wants to contribute a song there is still room. 8 songs are already "reserved". I'm looking for a release at the end of june. Concerning the cover art, FRONT will probably be a parody of the Sgt Pepper cover, with the MWH instead of the Beatles, and various characters from the Hats mythos in the background. What I would like is to have as many people from the list appearing on this cover. Since this work takes longer to do, I'll need pictures ASAP (before may 15th). After that I'll work with what I have. You can send them via e-mail (any format) or by snail mail (address given on request). I had some interesting submissions for art work. Some that blend well with the Sgt Pepper angle, and some less. If you have some suggestions, feel oblige to make yourself heard. It is a good day indeed! Intrigued by a comment made earlier regarding the superior sound quality of the 2-fer due to digital remastering, I promptly loaded in my Collection CD and set it to I Like (I love the rising drum beat at the beginning bursting into an intoxicating rhythm), then did the same with the 2-fer. I will shipping out the first few by this WED. Alot of people have emailed me asking when they can get it and the time is now. Also the other cds are still available. If you want to know what is on each CD you can vist my web site (which has all songs on the bootlegs in mp3 format) at www.holdman.com/mwh The qulaity on CD#8 is not as good as the rest of the CDs just to warn you. It was not a direct recording but was recorded with a portable tape desk using the built in microphone. You can hear the quality of it before you order by downloading one of the mp3 files on my website. Again the price for the CDs are $15 including color artwork. The CDs are not available anymore without the artwork since I make a whole slew of them ready with artwork already on them. The artwork is printed on a real press and the quality is the same you would expect from buying the CD from the store. Again these are the CDS that are available 1,2,3,4,5,8 Cds 6 and 7 are not available right now and I am not sure when they will be. There will also be a CD-ROM available with all 8 cds (when they are available) in mp3 format. There will also be some music videos on the cd-rom and a few covers of MWH songs done by other bands. The CD-ROM is not available yet and when it is I will let you all know. The CD-ROM will be $15 including the artwork just like the audio CDs. The group is called Centrifugal Force. Colin is the singer on the album. ITs interesting because Sahara sings a bit and Jacqline dances in the video and concert, the same people from the SPELL. Colin really has an amazing voice. I know for a fact that this CD is deleted so you should definately get it from one of us. I am real sorry about the holdup with CD#6,7. I don't understand why this guy is SO busy. I HAVE a copy of 6,7 but not remastered. This guy is putting a month of work into these concerts in a PRO studio. I just want to let you know that if this guy doesn't come through, I will just let you have my tape - hissy copies.
