It's not always successful (uh, the rap part comes across as appalling tokenism to me...), but it's basically excellent. The first five or so songs (plus Forever) are all winners. Some of the stylings are indeed very "dance-clubbish" (ie. bubbly analogue synths), but it's still very much a pop record. For example, judging them solely as songs and ignoring the production, IMO Open Your Eyes and Walk On Water are fundamentally pretty similar kinds of songs - that is, completely brilliant. Great melodies and massive pop choruses. It doesn't get better than this, surely?! Alex, please get hold of a copy of The Spell (it's on Amazon if you otherwise have a problem) - you won't be disappointed.
