It's a huge melee of allsorts of stuff, much like their album (Since I Left You), but with more samples (de la soul, cyndi lauper, hall&oates, michael jackson, the beatles, bob dylan etc...) all thrown in the mix. on the tape I think some of it's live Dj-ing and other bits are clearly computer manipulated to get a perfect loop. if you're even luckier still (which i am), you may have the 'radio'/'gimix' promo cd double pack from australia which has the whole gimix mix on the cd continuously (ie without the break from side 1 of the tape to side 2). it's pretty mad stuff, so well worth tracking down a copy. they're gonna have a new album out next year sometime hopefully - this time with more identifyable tracks on it (ie pop songs). laters neil On Tue, 18 September 2001, "Pieter Gieszen" wrote: > Does anybody know if they’ve also made other singles / albums than the > above one and if so, are these also KLF-ish/related? They sure have made other singles, and one album. Their first release was a 7" called Rock City, in 1997. Bargain-basement Beastie Boys with a clarinet-led b-side, Thank You Caroline. The b-side and three other tracks from the same demo tape came out a couple of years later in the UK on a 10" with no particular title, but Undersea Community was the lead track and so the record is generally referred to by that title. Two tracks here (previously released on an Australian indie compilation) featured a Japanese rapper who had since left the band due to being deported. More cut-price cut-up hip-hop basically, with a generally laid-back tone. Before the release of the 10", as I recall (in 1998, anyway), their first EP came out on CD - titled El Producto, this featured a new version of Rock City, four other similarly jump-up-and-down rap-and-live-instruments tracks, and a brief intro and outro. Now going for hundreds of bucks on Ebay, apparently. Next came a remix of EP track Rollin' High on a Homebake comp, a gloriously odd cover of Do You Know The Way To San Jose for all-Aussie tribute album To Hal And Bacharach and a guest spot for Darren on a Moler 7". Second single proper appeared in 1999, as a generic-covered 12". Featured genius electro-choral thingy Electricity, plus four similar instrumental electronic-type things. First album was finished about this time, and then underwent endless delays for sample clearance (like, they kept announcing release dates all through 2000, then bumping them back by months...) Worth investigating from the waiting period is a remix they did of pals Gerling's song Enter Spacecapsule - every remix on the single is fantastic, including the one with vocals by a friend of mine. Darren also assisted Gerling on a remix they did for Alex Lloyd, if I recall rightly. Frontier Psychiatrist went to radio in mid-2000, got hammered for months, came out as CD5.=20 A bit before or a bit after the mersh release of FP, a mix tape called Gimix came out, basically in frustration at the delayed LP: an hour of DMC champ (and world #2) DJ Dexter mixing 80s pop, 90s hip-hop and tracks from the limbo-bound album. Rereleased on promo CD a few months ago. First album, Since I Left You, finally had Australian release brought back from Feb 2001 to November 2000. It now seems this may have been due to less stringent clearance requirements here, as the later UK release - and all subsequent pressings of the Australian issue, including the only vinyl) have a number of samples removed or replayed by the group. The title track was also released in 2001 as a single.=20 There've been various UK promo releases of album tracks and whatnot as well, plus the current ripoff merch single in Australia (nothing new but a radio edit of Radio). I think I've covered just about everything important, though... Yeah, hopefully some new b-sides will turn up for it, but since the 1999 12" had three otherwise unreleased tracks, I wouldn't get too hopeful. > "Frontier Psychiatrist" was (re-)released in 2001, as well as (or > possibly instead of, I'm not sure which) the 2000 release that Chris > already mentioned. "Frontier Psychatrist" > charted in the UK singles chart at about #15 I think. The UK release just took the b-sides from the earlier four-track Australian CD5 and some old stuff, to make one of those shitty three-track two-disc ripoff jobs that the UK music industry can't live without. I didn't bother mentioning it specifically because there was no new material (though they did make a new video for it -not quite as awful as the original, but pretty bad- and put that on one disc). Mario C. actually engineered the Beasties' 1989 Paul's Boutique LP, and has co-produced (with the band) every one of their records since, as well as doing most of their live sound (skipping only the UK/Australasian 1998 tour dates, as far as I know - he even came to Australia when they were touring incognito as punk band Quasar in 1997 playing pubs and supports). Two notable Avalanches releases I did forget to mention were 2001 remixes for Badly Drawn Boy and Manic Street Preachers. The Manics' So Why So Sad (Sean Penn mix) was added (along with Masses Against The Classes) as a bonus track to the Oz release of their latest boring album, whatever it's called, but I think the BDB track has only been released in the UK - I got it on an import 7". Also forgot an Andy Votel remix of 1997 b-side Thank You Caroline, which came out on an XL mini-compilation in 98 or so, but the track was re-used as a Since I Left You b-side, so I don't feel worried about that one.
