One of the great benefits of being on this list is the opportunity to meet other enthusiasts and trade for rare KLF releases (my collection is much better now than before discovering this). However, one item seemingly eludes us all--The Black Room. According to the recent article on Klf.de, the entire album was recorded, but only two tracks were mixed. Thus the decision to release this final work in final form rests squarely in the hands of Mr. Cauty and Mr. Drummond. I don't know if anyone, even Drummond and Cauty know why they quit right when they did. But some comments made by Drummond in his book 45 as well as other comments by Black Room mixer M. Stent give the impression that this album could have been not only their greatest work, but a work that could have propelled the KLF further into the stratosphere of pop superstardom. If you consider the music atmosphere of 1992, an album like the Black Room would have fit neatly between the disparate grunge and dance movements, making later bands like Limp Bizkit completely redundant. Perhaps this is what Drummond was afraid of. Mid next year will mark the 10th anniversary of the KLF implosion. Perhaps this would be a great opportunity for the KLF to share their last work with the enthusiasts who have supported them over the years by purchasing Cauty's remixes, Drummond's side projects and books, and the handful of KLF releases still available on the US market. The question is, what as a list may we do to entice Cauty and Drummond to share this final record with us, a small, nearly private audience? Start a petition, or perhaps offer fund the release ourselves? Sign bizarre, MU-esque documents promising not to share the record in any way with outside members? Sponsor a mass Brittney Spears CD burning for the Summer Solstice? What can we do to make the Black Room a reality? I look forward to hearing the lists thoughts. I would also be willing to participate in any effort that the list devises. - -- Dan T. Most of them are fairly sane, do really miss the days when new stuff was coming out and look forward to the rare outside chance of some of the old recordings suddenly appearing in a vault somewhere. However a surprising number have taken to trying to be KLF lookalikes, with varying degrees of success. The Kompetition, last year, was a fun little convention where a bunch of people dressed up as them. But some people do seem intent on taking it more seriously. Importantly though, no amount of dressing up as them or even throwing knickers at them is going to *persuade* them back into the limelight- in fact I'd see it as dissuasive. The many years-long scrabbling hunt for the "Black Room"... if Bill and Jimmy knew the extent of the desperation (and they possibly do) I think they'd laugh... This new "Live On Stage" disc is such a good lookalike that even some of the music press has taken to speculating whether it could be the real one (something which has happened to Elvis impersonators far more than once). Good impersonation it is, but really Bill and Jimmy, I don't think so. Watch the skies! Thankyouverymuch. With the number of bootleg copies no doubt being sold on eBay (I don't look that closely at many of them) I figure people need as many quick pointers as they can get. The cover is a better bootleg than with the Shag Times release. The big logos are good photographic copies. However, the writing on the edge of the sleeve is bolder on the bootleg, and uses a slightly funny font. (The question mark in particular has a weird 'hook' to it.) The writing along the bottom of the front and back has also been retypeset and is bolder on the bootleg. Font differences means that it says "The Sound of Mu(sic)" on the original, and "The Sound of Mu[sic]" on the bootleg. On the back (the mostly black '1987' side), where it says "A KLF Communications Company", the KLF in a diamond logo has almost disappeared on the original because the white lines are so fine. The bootleg is actually a lot clearer. The small 3D pyramid blaster logos on the front and back have lightning bolts over the pyramid on the original. These are missing on the bootleg. The LPs themselves are the real giveaway though. The bootleg has been totally retypset in the same more bold font with squarer parentheses. Also, the bootleg has a typo, "ALL SOUND O9N THIS RECORDING.." and says "331/3 RPM", instead of using a 'proper' one-third symbol. Original has "MPO JAMS LP 1 A" and "MPO JAMS LP 1 B" written by hand on the run-out grove. Bootleg is stamped "JAMSLP 1 A" and "JAMSLP 1 B" by a machine.
