Alan, are you forgetting 'high-siding' with that locked rear?  Last time I
heard, a great way to go flying.

Actually I generally pull in the clutch during a panic stop so as to not
kill the engine in case I need to accelerate quickly. On my A13 I can lock
the rear wheel any time I want and have while fully loaded at 65mph. Being
able to lock the rear I see no need to downshift unless I need to
accelerate hard and since I already have the clutch pulled in I can down
shift while still on the brakes.

See, what I'm talking about here is a full on stop, from speed to zero as
fast as possible!  If you take a MSF course, and if you practice it, you'll
see what I mean.  You stand on the pegs, put your butt as far to the rear as
possible to get your center of mass over the rear wheel, and apply both
brakes front and rear as hard as humanly possible, without locking the
tires.  There is no time to downshift, there's just enough time to pull the
clutch in.  If you are thinking about downshifting then you aren't
concentrating on stopping hard enough, and possible executing a counter
steer if you need to.  The rear brake on the KLR is plenty strong enough to
lock up the rear wheel without the motor's help.  Your attention is better
served concentrating on modulating the brakes to remain at maximum stoppage,
without the wheels locking up and sliding.  Most panic stops occur at speeds
below 35 mph, and the motor isn't much help there.  Go out and try it, one
and all, I guarantee you all that you will stop faster with the brakes at
maximum, without downshifting and using engine braking.  The effort required
to downshift and let the clutch out takes away from the split second
reaction times needed for the full on panic stop.

I am a spry young 23, and I've been riding for almost 2 1/2 hours (total). I 
will turn 24 in exactly one week!! I feel more like 40 sometimes (compliments 
of my 18 month old daughter). 

Now I don't feel so bad about being so motorcycle ignorant. I'm just a 
"whipper-snapper" after all! By the time I reach the average age of listers, 
I'll be a motorcycle veteran, giving advice to the new "youngins" on the 
list. 

By the way, anyone on this list from Virginia? I know absolutely none of the 
motorcycle riders around here (Roanoke). My '00 is the first KLR I've seen in 
this area! Does no one in my state have good taste? They must be in hiding.

Um, would that be Jeff Beck's "Guitar Shop"?  I love that CD.  I've been a
Jeff Beck fan for a long time now.  I have an old record of Jeff Beck, Eric
Clapton, and Jimmy Page called "Guitar Boogie"  Ever heard it?

In high school I played rhythm guitar in a punk band called "Diddley Squat"
Our lead guitar / singer drowned, so the band broke up.  Our bass player
went on to fame and fortune though.  His name is Nate Mendel.  I've known
him since the sixth grade, we were both skate punks.  He went on to play
with Sunny Day Real Estate, and of late The Foo Fighters.  I sort of gave up
playing, after I got really bad frost bite my fingers don't really do what I
want them to do anymore.  My interests changed too.  Every now and then I
pull out my classical guitar (I don't own any electrics anymore), pluck out
a few arpeggios, practice a few etudes, attempt a Spanish folk song I know,
then put it away in total frustration.

Yep, give the man a cigar.  The force due to kinetic friction (tires sliding
across the pavement) is always less than the force of static friction (tire
rolling without slipping).  The idea is to apply as much brake as possible,
and if the wheel locks, quickly let off and reapply (modulate.)  There is a
danger though, if the rear tire locks and breaks out to one side or other at
speed, and the rider lets off the brake, there there is a real danger of
high-siding.  In this case the rider should keep on the brake with the tire
sliding, and balance it out to a stop, the balance is important here so that
a low-side doesn't happen.  I have personally experienced both, and neither
are fun, although I think that the high side is more dangerous.

this guy who went up every weekend, and took his trumpet off into the trees
