Whoa there pardner! It ain't that easy.... A Helicoil works because you first have to drill out the striped out hole a size larger and then you rethread it to fit the helicoil. After you insert the helicoil (should need a special tool for this) then you have the original threads again. I have a helicoil assortment but with out the correct drill bit, tap to rethread the hole and helicoil inserter tool, a helicoil won't do you much good. I would imagine that the valve cover bolts are either a 6mm or 8mm thread. You can go to any good autoparts store and ask for a helicoil kit to fit any metric bolt you need. Take a striped out bolt with you, so you get the right helicoil kit. These kits are around $40 and it probably will be cheaper to let your bike shop do it for you. The kit I have does 6mm threads to 14mm sparkplug holes and cost me about $260. It was a wonderful machine on the street and would eat up dirt, county roads no problem. There were a few things about the TDM that I couldn't tolerate and ended up selling it shortly after I bought my KLR. It was the absolutely worst motorcycle I have ever had to work on. Any maintenance at all usually required removing the tank, front cowling and other bits. The 92 model also had a weaker electrical system than a KLR. The 93 was beefed up substantially. If you ran it until it sputtered before switching over the petcock, you had to plan on sitting by the side of the road a while before you could get it started again. If you did that on a 92, plan on walking home because you would run the battery down trying to start it. Oil changes were lots of fun. The oil filter is part of s plate that is underneath the engine. Six different sized bolts had to be removed then the plate would come loose and a quart of oil would dump out all at once. The other 3.5 quarts were fortunately in the oil tank which had a drain bolt. Just some insights in the TDM ownership. It included 6 or 8 coils, the "coil driver", the tapper and the drill bit (I'm not sure about the bit). I don't remember the exact price, but I'm sure it was less than $20. If memory serves, I'm pretty sure it was a 6mm metric that matched the bolt. I just checked the bolt thread by taking it to local hardware store to make sure of the thread size and pitch. THe whole deal was easier than I expected. I think that price I came up with might have been for a sparkplug size Helicoil set. A 6mm kit would be cheaper.
