Hello! I´m going to mount a pair of heated grips to my bike. They leave about 20w of heat.. How many w can the bike handle (klr 650, 91)?? I want to be able to use bot headlight (70w?) and grips at the same time. Plus that i´m mounting a socket for a heated west. I just want to know before i´m getting started so i´m not trying to squese out to many watts out of my trusty tengai.. _________________ Check out the archives for plenty of discussion about this. The wattage isn't all that easy to figure because it partly depends on the rpm's of the engine. It comes down to this, you can probably get by with the three items you mentioned but be careful with the heated west...you want one that draws the least as possible. I went with Aerostich...they make a good west. But, things are slowing down as the Web Site has not added much lately in the way of real helpful articles. Articles on bike reviews are fine but we all see numerous "Bike Review" articles in the professional bike magazines. What the Dual Sport Web Page gave (and gives) us is articles that we can actually use and do something with - like "How To" articles. I would like to have some people write up and submit articles on "How To" things - one comes to mind that I feel a lot of folks would use and appreciate - can someone provide an article on changing out front and rear wheel bearings for the KLR650? Just need to basically follow the Service Manual steps - but - need information on the sealed bearings size and industry stock numbers (they can be bought at any bearing wholesaler). Some photos of removing and installation, etc. If someone has the time and is at the point where they should check and replace their bearings it would be a real help if you would document your procedure and send it in for publication. Jon, I installed a pair of Tim and Sherry Bernard's radiator guards on my KLR. A few weeks later I dropped the bike hard on the left side in dirt with only cosmetic damage. The pair of radiatior guards also provide a great mounting point for tank bags. I originally complained to Mike at Dual Star that my new centerstand didn't raise the rear wheel of the KLR clear of the ground. I even measured it, and Mike agreed it seemed a little short by about a quarter of an inch. Anytime I wanted to have rear wheel ground clearance, I'd park in gravel and make a hole. The stand is old now - I've put 16,000 miles on the bike since May, and it looks a little ragged. Well, it was all my fault - I've got a big fat custom Works shock with remote reservoir on the rear, and its default length is longer than the factory shock when the bike is unloaded. No wonder the rear wheel drags. I'm having a welder add a piece to the bottom of both centerstand legs. In the meantime, I gotta go grovel in front of Mike and Carrie, and will settle up with them asap for the extra stand they sent me. New sprockets, new chain, Fastline up front, valve adjustment, heli-coil install, coolant change, horn mod, da, da-da, da-da... I want to thank EVERYONE for the tips and advice sent my way. Can I be honest here? I ABSOLUTELY HATE working on my bike. Riding is my gig, but wrenching does nothing for me- altho' I DO like knowing exactly what's been done to my bike, and that it's been done right. And it's also a must for those of us who want to get into big time touring. I admire you folks who can really get into it and enjoy it for it's own sake. For me, it's like exploring some dark cavern without knowing if I'm going to be find my way back out. It's a non-stop walk upon the eggshells. Oh well, I can't see myself wanting or needing to do anything to my bike that I haven't already done at least once. And once I get my mits on a Russell Day Long the journey will be complete. My state of riding nirvana will be reached, and I will be happily touring in my own private Idaho. My bike will then be perfect for me! Thanks again folks, sorry for the ramble... But I got paid to ride my bike all day long, 13 hours total, boy is my butt sore. and wrists. so sometime next year a movie will come out called "romeo must die" starring jet li, kind of a chinese vs. black mafia romeo and juliet. in this movie there is, of course, a chase scene (or two) which contains two motorcycles: a triumph tiger and a BMW R1100GS. while it's very cool that they used the GS, (instead of the cruiser in the Bond flick, for instance) the trouble with it is that the sound of it isn't dramatic enough for the director and producer...so today we recorded all the moves that the R1100GS made in the movie with my R100GS! so i got to be stunt driver for the day. grueling work, and of course we have to do it all out in the desert so there is less extra noise...bummer... we not only recorded the moves and driving, but also attached onboard mics, one near the tailpipe and one in behind the transmission for a lot of "you are the bike" sound. i want my own cd! so it'll be funny to see it when it's all put together, that R1100 sounding like an airhead. but it's better than the triumph - he's being dubbed by a 900 ninja! - --jes MAGNETIC PO Box 460816 S.F.
