I usually do all my own service, but as I told someone else I like to let the dealer do the first service just for warranty issues. And I don't mind paying the going rate for a first class job. I took a bunch of photos to document the process for the website. But basically you have to get the baffle out one way or t'other, I used a broomstick. Much to my surprise a very small portion of the original packing was burnt near the inner most flange of the baffle. When I got it back together it was definitely back to a smoother sound, but I have the feeling it had just about gone away again 700 miles. The silencer now lives with John Paul in Dana Point.... It was built 9/96. The owner of the bike and the owner of the shop are telling me this bike is a 97 model. Could this be true? Is some other way to tell besides the ID plate on the steering head? The owner of the shop said that any bike built after June of a particular year is considered the next years model. True? The bike is very nice with mucho after market equipment and 5713 miles on it. It has: Russell seat (which unfortunately places me too close to the tank for my 6'6" frame) Braided steel brakeline on front Avon Gripsters front and rear (look very new) Progressive fork springs Dunlopads on front and rear Rifle (I think) windshield Dyno Jet kit Kawasaki tank bag Centerstand Moose bash plate 14 tooth front sprocket All original parts including seat Priced at $3650 Valves checked before it was brought to dealer. Talked with the owner. Has a Gold Wing and spends more time on that than KLR. Does this sound like a good deal? It seems to me to be a fair price. I will test drive it tomorrow. Beautiful views and mountain goats what more could you ask for. The day I rode up a local bicycling club was having a practice ride up in preparation for a bike race later that week. I don't think I could have ever done the climb on a bicycle. > Alan Henderson A13 Iowa BRRRRRRRRRR >> I rode my mountain bike up Pikes Peak on the "hiking" trail twice, once to the 10,000 ft mark (Bear Camp or something) where my girlfriend started feeling altitude sickness, and by myself 2 days later. When I couldn't ride anymore, I carryed the bike to approx 1000 ft of summit and then stashed-it under a big boulder. Some tourists looked surprised when I popped over the top in biking gear with water bottles and asked them to take my picture. It took me about 8 hours to go up and only 3 or so to go down. The trail down is gently terraced, huge, long lofting airs over and over again. Really one of the best mtn. bike downhills I have ever done. My knees hurt really bad for days afterward. I think I'd rather ride up the road on the KLR. But I also need enuff about the operation as to not bug the mechanic and observe without being in his way. That's from years as a motorcycle mechanic and service manager myself ha ha ha.. But this did really lock me on to this dealer for years to come. Very good, well trained mechanic and a very good dealership that knows it's products.
