They hook up great off road however your ride suffers on the street. It seems the cause the bike to vibrate more on the pavement. If I was to travel long distances I would probably get a more street oriented tire. But it seems I do more riding in the dirt so I am not so concerned about the street. They do seem to grip reasonably well on the pavement. Had an interesting chat with a couple of the salesguys out there. They say that the company is just about back from the dead with new investor money. Of course they couldn't say enough good things about the bike "a future collectors bike, smooth as silk, power up the wazoo, blah, blah, blah"... maybe theyre itching to sell... Anyway one of the guys said he could get me on it for 16K, and another salesguy (not knowing I talked to the other guy) said 18K. Both of these offers came pretty much unsolicited (since I was in "just looking" mode) so you tell me if they want to unload it :) In all honesty though, I was "feeling up" the bike for about five minutes and was really impressed with the fit and finish on it. I'd say that it is better to feel and look at up close than a Harley. I think that even the underside of the tank was painted and clearcoated. All the welds looked like they were ginded down to smooth, so the whole bike had a seamless look to it. No plastic, anywhere at all, was seen. At least the build quality looks like it's there. Maybe the guys in Minnesota at least got one thing right. We again were based at Bahia Concepcion and did several rides into the Sierra Guadalupe and the Northern Sierra Giganta. Good weather and good riding. This trip was a little less intense than some of my recent trips there, we took some time off from riding for kayaking, beach volleyball and trips into Mulege to watch our beloved Vikings win their way into the playoffs. All in all a very good trip, I'm back at work for the rest of this month but will be spending most of Feb back in Baja. It will stretch prematurely and the front sprocket will wear quickly and of course that will wear the rear sprocket as well. I would go to a 14 front and add 2-4 or more on the rear. Then you could still go back to the 15 when you do pavement traveling. I am not sure what the effect of adding teeth to rear will have on the rear chain guide if any. The bike is just resting then ;) Here in SW Ontario, Canada, I've done absolutely nothing to my bike. Whenever the days are nice enough to ride, I'll take it out for a spin, like new years day here. Have yet to strip anything or have anything vibrate off that I have bolted together. Gino That's been my modus operandi for 20 years. There are some instances where torquing by feel is risky. The valve cover bolts on the klr have heads that are larger than normal for their diameter. What you feel is not what you get. I'll bet that the lister who striped his oil drain bolt didn't or couldn't tighten the bolt very far with his fingers. Then he applied a big clumsy torque wrench which didn't give him the feedback to realize the bolt wasn't going in straight. A simple wrench would have been better. My method is to get nuts/bolts good and tight with my hand high on the wrench directly over the socket. Never striped or lost a bolt/nut this way. I have striped bolts using a torque wrench but that is a murky story shared with the list ad nausea. Nowadays I often do use my torque wrenches cause they're there.
