Hello All, I have maxxed out my rear stock shock to give maximum spring tension. I have replace the front shocks with progressive springs. The progressives were a nice performance enhancement but unfortunately... I need more resistance. My question to all is as follows: Is there a stiffer front spring available that will keep me from bottoming out my forks from a simple wheelie. Is there a stiffer rear spring/shock combo that provides a SIGNIFICANT increase in spring resistance. I will try and pretension my progressives about an inch with some PVC pipe from home depot to see if that will help. As per the rear shock... I am aware of the aftermarket cutetsy coloured sprink/shock combo that sells for about $450. Unfortunately, there are no performance specs available to me for comparison to the stock configuration. I would appreciate ya'lls help with equipment or tweeking recommendations to beef up my suspension. I ride my A13 in Tucson Arizona trail riding (along power lines, pipelines, etc.). I am about 250-260 lbs. and I do NOT carry a camping load when trail riding. The problem with my riding conditions now is that I keep bottoming out on the trails when ever I get the slightest amount of air (6 to 8 inches off the ground). GAWD forbid that I get more than a foot of air!!! Please spare any recommendations for new bikes or lectures about how the KLR is not made to be a KX. I just need some help with beefing up the suspension. Progressive Suspensions has been very responsive to the needs of the KLR. The first replacement spring that they make was rated at 350#. This was better that the stock shock spring but just not enough. They then made the famous "Panama Red" spring which was rated at 560#. This was great and a much better spring than we had seen before. Now there is a true progressive spring rated 500#- 560# from Progressive Suspension which is as good as it gets. This spring will fit your stock shock or you can go all out for the Larry Roeseler series shock with the new 500-560 spring. I have both of these in stock and if you want to talk it over, let me know. There is a new fork spring from Progressive Suspension, also the Larry Roeseler series. This spring is chrome plated and maybe just a little larger, but with the same spring rate as the old model. Try using some thicker fork oil to see if that helps your front end dive. Stock is 10wt. and you could go with 15wt. or 20wt. Since changing to Progressive front springs, I haven't bottomed out the front... and I've dropped from a lot more than a foot. I have 15W oil in my forks (the correct amount... 420ml), and have not cut my spacers. What set up did you use? > Is there a stiffer rear spring/shock combo that provides a SIGNIFICANT > increase in spring resistance. Yes. The big-ass Panama spring from Progressive is twice the thickness of the stock with WAY more resistance. January 18, 2000 **Ace KTM rider Kinigadner crashes hard, multi- broken bones, out of race! **Sainct has GPS problems and Lewis slows to help teammate. **BMW's Lady Mayer finishes #15 on today's stage - she spanking some good boys!! **137 Motorcycles start race today (60 was incorrect yesterday, ktm source - -bad) **BMW in place 2 - 5 overall, need Roma to falter for chance at victory. **Stage winner Cox (KTM) averages 100 kph (~70mph) over almost 600km! **Tomorrows stage is longest with 631km scored - BMW must close gap on Roma. Heard in the Pits: KTM: It was a disastrous day for the Austrian bicycle factory. Ace rider Kinigadner crashed out of the race very hard. Broken thigh, left hand and vertebra -oouch! Seems Kini detected an oil leak at the base of the cylinder and lost time in fixing it. In an effort to catch up, he "wadded up" - was going waaay to fast for conditions! Kini is no stranger to crashing out, 6 times entered into the Dakar, he has yet to finish. On a brighter note, Kini has been contacted by the MSF for a possible job as an instructor specializing in how to avoid crashes caused by "time pressure". Look for a write up in Chuck's Crash Poll. Another more important fact is that Kini and overall leader Roma were the only 2 KTM riders on "identical" bikes. Roma no longer enjoys the "rolling spare-parts bike". All efforts are focused on having Roma shadow Sainct and maintain a comfortable margin. Roma said, "I ride very conservatively, stick close to Sainct and may be get lucky and win this race if bike don't break." KTM lead mechanics, Sparkz R Miszings and Goudt N. Tite, are working very hard to see that Roma's bike makes it to Cairo under its own power. Sparkz is boasting that the bike cranked this morning (unlike yesterday) and Goudt stated, "I go over every nut and bolt on machine and get dem all "goudt n tite", righty tighty, lefty loosey ......or is it the other way?" BMW: BMW's spin doctors hype 4 bikes in top 5 but don't appear to be content to finish 2nd. They acknowledge both Roma's skill and KTM's speed. Sainct's problem with his GPS slowed him today, yet he still managed to cut 1 minute off Roma's lead of 23 minutes. Seems that Sainct's GPS unit went on the blink just after the start of the stage. American Jimmy Lewis showed his team spirit by slowing down and guiding Sainct to the finish. Sainct said of Lewis, "Jimmy could have won the stage today on ol' Woody, if he hadn't had to slow down for me. Hopefully, he can show his stuff tomorrow." Meanwhile, BMW logistics specialist, Nav A. Gator, has been reassigned to assist Sainct in de-bugging his GPS unit. Lewis' tire problems seem to be solved after BMW brought in a specialist from the University of Tireallogee at Munich, Prof.. N. Zufficient Ar' Prezshure. After the stage was complete a very happy Lewis said, "Getting in Zufficient Ar' Prezshure was the key to success." The Prof. also went on to say that Lewis himself helped solve the problem by correcting the pressure-volume equation. The Prof. said, "Normally vee use, pv=nRT", but as Lewis explained, "This Woody-Boxer ain't no stink'n RT, it's a GS !" "Vee adjust equation to, pv=wbGS, everything work out OK now, I zink", said the Prof... The 1st set of new chains for the F650's today, Driveshaft #8 for Woody. Motorcycles are probably on the bottom of the list in terms of gas consuming vehicles targeted for massive environmental redesign. At this point in time, they pretty much are considered envoronmentaly friendly [aside perhaps from 1200+ cc gas guzzlers]. In addition, do you have any idea how much hydrogen fuel cells weigh? Remember, they've been around for 15 years, and they still aren't used in any mass-production vehicle. What we'll most likely see over the next 10-15 years is increased polution controls on existing motorcycle combustion engines, the introduction of lower emmision fuels, and perhaps a 'cc' restriction. Oh yeah, water is actually one of the rarest elements in the 'known' universe; I'd rather see people drinking it than 'burning' it. Plus, I just gotta ask, you seriously consider the prospect of an absolutely quiet motorcycle appealing?? Shyte man, gimme pipes!
