So on the klr it could be an add on piece, it would look like a triangular wedge with no bottom, app. 10" in length, the exact width of the Moose/MSR Skid plate with two tabs (no hardware) that hooks between the frame tube and the existing plate in front or behind of the existing mounting hardware - slide it in - then at the back, ends at the end of the current skid plate but about 1.5" below it (covering the drain plug), which then can be affixed to the current plate with one long flathead latch screw. Simple - only one bolt - easy on / off - the strength depends on the gauge of aluminum we decide - with total protection - (anyone want to fabricate). Simple to make, take one piece of aluminum 10" x 15" then bend in 1.5" on either side of the 15" width to 90' angles then cut along those sides a 45' angle,,, hang on here, were am I going with this the fabricator can make this better than I could...... could it work ?? Great weather and a great time. The topper was a 180 mile ride from Glamis to Borrego Springs to Ocotillo Wells. Lots of sand. I don't want to start a debate, but the only way I found to make the sandy areas, was to stand on the pegs and keep the speed around 20-30 mph at high rpms. I pilled twice, with the first breaking the previous owner's JB Weld repair to the left side luggage rack/grab handle. Everything else survived without damage...or so I thought. Today, after an oil change and standard maintenance, I removed the seat and tank to check things out. Turns out I sheared one of the bolts were the rear subframe mounts above the UniTrak. Off comes the airbox, rear fender, etc.. Not much of a KLR sits in the driveway. Any suggestions on how to successfully remove the sheared bolt? Figured I would return a rabbit ear antenna that doesn't work to the local hardware store on the way home. I put the antenna in my tail rack pack and headed to the " Snowbird Ski Resort". Usual, I watch skiers, they watch me routine. On the way home I returned the antenna. The return desk is next to the bargain rack at the store. They had a really nice chain saw with an eight foot pole handle that I've looked all over for. Couldn't pass up the deal. Bought it, walked out the door then I remembered something when I was looking for my truck. I only brought two wheels. Looked real funny on the way home with a small chainsaw protruding from my rear turn signal and three foot of pole hanging out the front of the KLR. I guess the question is: " Is this Alhiemers?" If anyone can enlighten me before it gets to bad to make a reply, I sure would appreciate it. Also I guess if I could find a place to carry a saw on a pole, a place for a scabbard shouldn't be to hard to find. Center punch the center of the broken bolt, take a drill and small bit, drill out the center of the broken bolt. Enlarge the hole to fit the easy out and try to remove the broken bolt. If it is really stuck, you may have to drill out the whole bolt and rethread the hole. Just be careful that the hole you drill is smack dab in the center of the bolt. I have seen several of the subframe bolts broken on the KLR. So it might be a good idea for everyone out there to check theirs from time to time.
