I know a lot of this is old territory, but I'm thinking of a late summer/early fall trip to Alaska. I haven't really thought it out any better than that, so I wanted to pick the collective brain. I live in central Washington State, and I'm thinking about taking the ferry as far up as I can (?Haines?), then tooling around, taking about a month to make my way back home. Mostly camping, the occasional cheap motel, or night on a friendly biker's couch. Now, for those experienced travelers on the list, what's the best time to do this? Is October too late? I don't know jack about Alaska's roads, where can I get to in this timeframe without pushing my time too hard? I have pretty limited offroad experience, too. On another note, is there anyone in the great NW who would be willing to spend a day or 2 going over my bike with me to make sure it's ready for the trip? I would be willing to part with $$ and/or beer for the time. I've got a 98 with about 15k on the clock. Unfortunately, I live in the boonies, and the Kawi dealer near me (50 miles) is a d**khead. I'm no wrench, but I've adjusted my valves and broken down the carb to re-jet. I have never lubed the Unitrak - wouldn't even know how. Anyway, if you're getting the idea that this is kind of a half-baked scheme, I guess you're right. But, I've been working TOO HARD for TOO LONG, and I need a break. I know a little about touring on the KLR, rode to Moab last year. But, I know very little about Alaska, so any help would be appreciated. Oh yeah, if you're interested, I don't have a riding pal planning this trip yet, either. One of the comparisons was the zinc content in 20W-50 motor oils. The highest zinc content of the ten or so oils compared was Spectro Golden Four and Castrol GTX "auto" oil. Their zinc content was essentially the same. I have been using Pennzoil 20W-50 in my bike during the summer and Pennzoil wasn't in the comparison. I bought four quarts of Castrol at Wal-Mart for 82 cents a quart. I've never used Spectro but I think it's two or three bucks a quart at motorcycle shops. So, if you're looking for the zinc, it appears that Castrol could be what you need. Thanks. About 10 years ago, I came across an Amsoil brochure that had bar graph comparisons of Amsoil v. about 7 different dino oils and breakdown into volitile compounds and viscosity retension. Obviously Amsoil was rated best, but Castrol GTX came in close second. Pennzoil was third or fourth. QuakerState was by far the worst. I use Castrol in my bikes, mainly from my experience with my SAABs. My SAAB factory service manual says to use Castrol oil, grease and brake fluid and I have had no negative results. My thinking is frequent oil and filter changes are more beneficial than high $ oils. My complaint was about the restocking fee. When I ordered on the phone I asked if I could return it if I didn't like it - "Sure" they said. And you can - you just have to pay. It was a good lesson. Since then I would say that I have bought about 80% of my stuff from local dealers who always seem willing to deal a bit - e.g. my Killi I got 10% off which was okay by me. Hoskins" Does anyone have any experience with KLR650s at high altitudes? A small group of us are going to be taking our KLRs into Napal and Tibet later this year. This trip is going to include crossing a series of high altitude passes including three passes over 17,000 ft and several weeks riding at altitudes above 10,000 ft. Is the KLR going to need to be rejetted when we get to high altitude or will it just keep purring along? ************************************** Randy- I've had my KLR a tad over 10,000 feet a couple times and various altitudes below that, down to sea level where it runs most of the time. My bike with stock carb jetting and exhaust tends to not want to idle as well up that high, so I just adjust it up with that handy manual adjuster. Other than that and the harder starting and longer warm-ups that Toby mentions, it runs fine. This is one reason that I like the stock carb jetting. It might run a bit rich at high altitude, but a little rich is no problem. If I had richer jetting for sea level, it could run pretty doggy way up high. I fathom that up around 14-17000 feet, even with stock jetting, the bike will run sluggish. Sounds like a job for the Super Sherpa. ;2) Darrel (takin' the highs with the lows) A12 Visit the KLR650 archives at http://www.listquest.com/lq/search.html?ln=klr650 Support Dual Sport News... dsneditor@softhome.net To subscribe/unsubscribe send message to majordomo@lists.xmission.com leave subject blank. You can expect cold weather, not really cold, but cold and damp nonetheless. If you are traveling later in June, you will likely be ok. Fuel is limited in the north once you leave Fort St. John (assuming you travel the Alaska Highway), but there are outpost resorts that sell gasoline. I understand that fuel on the Dempster is even more limited. If you have an electric vest, wear it. BTW, as of June there is no "night" as we southerners know it. If you have never experienced 24 hour daylight, the trip 'north of 60' is a must.
