Picked it up Friday and got the first 400 KM on it. A little frosty but my new First Gera Kilimanjaro and some of my snowmoble stuff came in handy. I've only been on dirt roads so offraod I can;t make muc of a call yet but this is one remarkable road bike. I was amazed at how competent it was and had visions of a much less friendly ride. I have not come home after two days of riding without a sore ass before. All this and I haven;t taken it over 4000 RPM, well most of the time anyway. The faring buzzs a bit and the mirrors are like two chromed fuzzy lollipops, the frnt end is way too soft and the front brake is border line dangerous, all fixable I'm sure. My limited advice: I have thin polypropylene glove liners and a silk balaclava from Mountain Equipment Co-Op (Canadian). Absolutely love them for the cold. (This is my number one piece of advice.) Go-over the bike with an objective friend and a bottle of lock-tite (the blue stuff, Threadlocker 242 - removable, not the red stuff) and retighten fasteners before the trip. I rode an XL to the east-coast from Ontario and lost parts of the bike on the way back (footpeg, toolkit...) Have had some losses on the KLR as well (several exhaust fasteners). Take a (small, pudding-sized) tupperware container full of fasteners. This has been one of my most valuable tools. Take a spare H4 bulb. My primary piece of gear is a 45 litre dry-bag (kayak bag). It has been on every trip I have taken (since I started biking in '92) is 100% waterproof, and has held up tremendously! (Other than a tank-bag, it was the only piece of gear I had on the XL). The Aerostich dry-bag saddle bags look awesome! http://www.geocities.com/MotorCity/Downs/6164/page33.html Have a blast! Would love to be in your boots! Yes, you better believe your local "wonder" mechanic. The 3" external disc mufflers were made for bikes 30 years ago before Supertrapp new much about making mufflers. They are very loud and had a reputation for falling apart and plugging up. These should not be confused with the new 3" IDS pipes. They are two different mufflers. You get what you pay for. For $70 you won't get the connector pipe to fit your bike. If you want a cheap pipe I would go with the Cobra but they are known for only lasting about a year and then they fall apart too.
