First up is the XT600! WHAT? Yamaha dealers HATED this bike, slow, poor handler, and a sales flop. they pretty much paid people to take 'em, at least here in the Southeast. This bike should be replaced withe the 1995 KTM RXC 620/400. When Suzuki introduced the DR it wanted a more dirt tolerant machine. KTM was the first to offer at "dirt bike with lights". The '95 was in essence, an EXC enduro model with a speedo and a Baja Lighting kit. It was named Best Dual Sport Motorcycle everyyear but one since 1995. And has now evolved into the LC4 640 (Not that it needed any MORE power!) The KTM has been known world wide as the LC4, but only in the States as the RXC for the first four years. It is an awesome motorcycle, but not on the road. The next one will offer some debate, but I would suggest removing the Africa Twin and adding the Yamaha Super Tenere. Didn't Stephan Peterhansel blow away EVERYBODY in a few dakars with that 660 single? Not to mention the incredible sales success it had in Europe. I kept wanting one he in the states and settled on a TransAlp. (Talk about a bike ahead of its time, 'eh) Anyway, theres my two cents, and now..... LET THE DEBATES BEGIN! I just open the gas cap and that stops it. It has always done this. I did have the gas cap vent labrynth clog up last summer and the bike stopped running twice in the same day while I was cruising down the road. Opening the gas cap allowed me to get home. The 400 should have never been made as it weighed only a couple of pounds less than the 620. The 640 LC4 put it all together and was rightly noted. > The next one will offer some debate, but I would suggest removing the Africa > Twin and adding the Yamaha Super Tenere. Didn't Stephan Peterhansel blow I think Stephen used a factory bike with a TDM engine for his wins. Not really readily available to the public. I did consider the XTZ660 Tenere, though. The Honda Africa Queen however won out as it picked up when BMW dropped the GS ball as a high perfromance adventure touring machine that could actually look at dirt without losing its composure. The Canadian version only has the single hose, however - while my bike is currently in pieces, I took the tank vent hose (while it was still connected to the tank) and blew into it to see if there was any restriction in my hose (yeah baby), and/or the labrynthian venting system in the cap itself. What I found was NOTHING. It was almost as easy as blowing through a MacDonald's straw (without the spitball's). The slightest pressure from me and it immediately vented from the tank cap. I believe this to be a good thing, as consequently, I've never been victim to tank pressure build-up, hesitation, or mysterious wet weather stalling. If the link is truly frozen, what it does is create uneven sections of chain pitch. Shortsection-longsection-shortsection-longsection causes a rhythm which can whip the chain. A whipping chain drastuically increases the chance of breakage, beats up everything in its path (chainguides, frame parts, chain slippers, chain master link), and is the real problem, not wear. The California version is the one with the two tubes protruding from the rear of the tank. It appears that the western states are getting the California version along with some other states (a lister from Florida had reported that he had the California version). The U.S. version A-14 is still available. When I was looking for one I found it on a showroom floor in New Jersey which surprised me being how New Jersey is so strict with emissions. I expected to only see the California version there. Since the bike was apart, I took off the chain and inspected it thoroughly. All appeared well except the rubber cover over the nose of the left side of the swingarm was worn significantly from the chain sliding over the top part of it. Obviously this rubber shield is there to protect the swingarm from the chain sliding and slapping on it. Judging from the wear on my bike, I would expect to need to replace the rubber shield somewhere around 15,000 miles. But I never hear anyone talking about replacing it. What's up? Thanks. The first happened last summer when I was replacing a set of Tim's generation I highway pegs with a generation III set he made for me. The original set was installed with plated hardware that Tim provided with the pegs. When I removed them, the top bolt was completely devoid of its plating and the hole was full of white powdery residue similiar to battery post corrosion. The bottom bolt was corroded but far less than the top one. I installed the new footpegs and coated the new hardware with grease while wondering to myself if it would be a good idea to install a ground strap from the engine to the frame someplace. Then I forgot about it. The second was last night when I pulled out the swingarm bolt. About three inches of the the head end of the bolt was devoid of its yellow colored plating and there was a fair amount of the white powder. I suspect electrolysis between the dissimiliar metals/coatings between the engine and the frame. I'm going to make up a braided ground strap and install it somewhere. Thanks.
