Go the 6 speed box for sure. We know the KLR can do many things, a well spaced 6-speed would allow it to handle the extremes better. Maybe KHI could rationalise the KLR650 a bit, making the 650C and the 650A same in the chassis but having a list of options like tank size to cater for different markets. Standardising on the twin piston 650C front brake would be a good start. An update on the cylinder head would be nice, something closer to the KLX design could be useful. Add KTRIC to make the ignition timing more sophisticated, too. A stainless muffler would cost too much and many people would replace it with something noiser or maybe free-er flowing anyway. KHI seems to hang on to some models for a long time e.g. the 1000GTR ("Concours") seems to have been around for a long time, the GPz900 ("Ninja") is still in the Jap home market, even the little GPX250 has enjoyed little change over the years. The KE100 is another model that has endured either by oversight or by the factory sticking with well proven design. As KHI is the smallest of the Big Four factories, I suppose KHI needs to minimise development costs and maintain its foothold in niches. KHI did get adventurous in the retro market with the Indian-look cruiser thing and the Triumph-lookalike W650. Hell, they're not content to re-invent other makers classics, they go and re-invent their old Z1000R. Not upgrading some models means KHI has more development money to spend on flagships like the ZX12R. The friction disks have to begin and end with fibre plates so that you don't have the steel plates against the ally basket or pressure plate. It'll become more obvious when you have it apart. While you have the sidecase off, it'll be a good time to clean out the oil pickup strainer. If your clutch has truly been shedding chunks of friction material then this is where a lot of it will end up, and scary it will be, too. I kept my pile of chunks in a little plastic bag that I can show off. I'll take a pic some time. Before the Jap "street-scrambler" invasion of the '60's the Brits had their own legitimate form of off-roaders. Some of them, like the BSA 441 Victor, were legitimate dirt bikes with lights, and were raced successfully in scrambles, motocross, as well as ISDT and desert events. But the dual-sports that were the most popular where I rode in the Baltimore area were Triumph twins in 500 and 650 cc permutations. The "Trophy" and "Tiger" "C" models had lower gearing, ET batteryless ignition, skid plates, folding footpegs, special handlebars and square-edged "Trials Universal" Dunlops. Even the 650's weighed less than the KLR, about 375 lb. gassed and ready to go. That they were serious off-road bikes is attested to by desert wins (remember young Eddie [no relation to Fox] Mulder?) and enduro championships courtesy of Bill Baird on a 500 Triumph. The US fielded a Triumph-mounted ISDT team which included Steve McQueen that did quite well against little two-strokes ridden by Euro pro riders. So I think Triumph should be thrown into the "Top 10" mix, along with BSA and Norton, as they all made off-road bikes that helped to shape the sport into what it is today. JMHO, as always.
