I will be riding logging roads and forest service trails, plus highways in S. California. I am interested in buying a GPS and wondering which model would best be utilized on a KLR650 AND in a car. Most messages (several hundred) on the www.listquest archives seem to be outdated due to new models coming out and do not seem to compare the newest models. I am looking mostly at the Garmin GPS III plus and the Streetpilot. Price matters, but most important is dependability, map availability and ease of use. I note many KLR riders are using GPS's and would like their recommendations and ideas on GPS's, mounts and accessories. They have been there. I have been studying specs etc. on the < www.aerostich.com > and < www.cycoactive.com > web sites. Nope, the stock guards aren't going to protect your levers and more importantly, your hands. There's something to be said for leaving a bike stock, but hand guards and a metal skid plate would be the absolute minimum that I'd do, especially if you ever go off-road. John T. Of all the suggestions, I think removing the rubber tank cushion may have helped, but the trick for me seems to have been "severely squashing the coolant hose" as Kurt suggested. On my previous attempts, I has squished it pretty good, but obviously not quite enough. Hopefully, I'll find enough time this weekend to proceed with step two. Feels more natural...don't think the stock > guards are going to do much to protect the levers in a fall. However cheesy they are - protecting your levers in a fall was not what they were designed for. Your fingers will thank you on those cold wet days for the amount of wind protection they provide. They will also keep your fingers from being smacked by tree branches in the bush. For lever protection however - go with Acerbis Rally Pro's or Meyer's (sp?). I'm looking at a KLR650 for a trip to Alaska and South America over the next year leaving mid-June for Alaska. I suspect I will need a half decent set of hard panniers(SP?) but from my web browsing I am quite suprised by the cost of them. Can anyone reccomend an economical set that will be functional, or perhaps someone is looking to sell a set? I don't think I need a huge set, I try to travel quite light. Something not too overwhelming. I am in Southern Ontario at the moment. I have a set of soft bags for my Bandit but I think they would be too small and leaky to use for a long trip. Thanks for any advice. The purpose was to allow the bike to get up to 65 mph on the highway and then when you hit the trail, switch into a low ratio. It was very effective and made this very inexpensive motorcycle a blast to ride. The ratio was so low, you could put the bike in first gear and walk along side while it was running. It had a bigger brother, strictly off road version, without the dual ratio transmission, that included an expansion chamber called the "GREENSTREAK". Just some trivia...but this would really be a cool feature on the KLR..
