We have a motorcycle club at the church I pastor, and the club and show is a growth of us having so many avid motorcycle fans in the congregation. For the first show, we were finishing taping a review of the KLR650, and took it out in the country for some good country riding/curvy road shots. Afterwards, I asked the guys to come with me to a local homemade motocross track, so that we could get some shots of the KLR riding in the dirt, and maybe riding some wheelies and jumping a little bit. We get to the dirt track, get the camera set up, and the other two guys that were helping me rode a 98' SuperHawk, and a 99' Blackbird 1100xx. We attracted some attention from the kids in the neighborhood behind the track, and before we knew it there were about 10 kids talking to us about the bikes. All of the sudden most of em' dissappeared while I was riding for the camera, and I wondered "Man, what happened to all those kids? Must've gotten bored with the Big Moose Bike!" Then I see a coupla Dads come walking out onto the track. Then I see a new YZ80, and KX60 come onto the track. Then a JW80. Then a KX80/100. All these kids wanna see what the big Dual Sport'll do. All these kids had full motocross gear on also; from the helmets and goggles, to the racing pants, and chest protectors! My camera guy decides, "Hey, let's do a Motocross start, and line up the bikes, and see who get's out first!". The kids line up reving their bikes like they are Jeremy McGrath in a SuperDome somewhere. I'm there "Thump, thump, thumpin", and hoping these little motocrossers don't blow me away! The hand is waved, and the big KLR comes out on a wheelie and gets the whole shot on the little Ziiiiiiiingers! Only problem....after the nice straightaway, there is a sharp bumpy u-Turn. I'm sliding the rear of the Moose around that curve, but basically lose my lead to the little YZ80 in the curve (Hey, he had a pipe!). I take the long way around the curve, and pull in behind the YZ, eating his roost (I didn't know a bike that little could roost at all). we come to the big jump (A little double jump). He flies (Ziiiiiiiing) I set up for the jump........"Yeeeehaw.........Uh-Oh, gotta land this 747"..........whooosh..."Hey not too bad with the new Progressive fork springs. Sure does take some muscle to help the bike land comfortably though." After a while of messing with the motocrossers, I got tired of beating my KLR senseless (Now it is filthy), so I just kicked back and watched them race. The bike is just too big and squishy to ride HARD on a track for more than 15 minutes or so. It takes some muscle to keep jumping it, and land it without crashing. Those kids showed me absolutley no mercy. especially because I always left em' in the dust on the starts. I'm sore already tonight, so I know I was using a lotta body to keep the bike upright, and not get embarassed by the little guys. Pretty funny picture though....The big KLR against bikes that all put together, still didn't match it's displacement. I can definitely tell a huge difference in the bike's on and off road manners now; with the new fork springs, jet kit, pipe and stuff that I put on over the winter. Coming off of hill wheelies and landing, is smooth now where before it took effort to stop the suspension from compressing. Got some footage of the KLR riding with a Blackbird 1100xx in the curves on a way out, isolated country road with no traffic too. I was smoking the guy through the curves, and he got mad and just blew by me like I was standing still when we hit the straight.. Man, those bikes are mega-fast. I hit the throttle for a second and though "Yeah right!", laughing as his tailight got smaller and smaller. The I went off the road right into the ditch and jumped it, just to make me feel better :) Fun day, but it made me want a serious dirt bike, in addtion to the KLR. My budget says that feeling will pass.... I packed the camera and tripod up, and put everything into my detachable trunk, and hit the road; admiring how smooth this big dual-sport was , even after beating it on a track with some ziiiiiiiingers. Sweet bike. As we were loading the bike up, my SuperHawk buddy said "Man Bill, this KLR is like the Sport Utility Vehicle of motorcycles. You can do anything with it!"...."Yup", I said. Some of the KLR stuff does look pretty cool on video. I'm looking forward to getting into the editing booth and seeing what we can put together for the show on the KLR. I figured replacing the OEM bulb with a H4 90/130w, was the reason. -- Verified 10A fuse blew, replaced it...still no headlight !! Re-installed the OEM bulb, still no light...confirmed all connections were good. Tapped the lens and Yammo - light returns ?? Now, every time I remove the key, and reinstall it - no headlight, and it requires a tap on the lens to come back on ? So what happened ?? Has anyone else run into this problem, and found a fix ? However, I recently purchased for $3.42 from JC Whitney a front and rear mudguard. Looks like it should help, though not completely eliminate the problem. Easy install. Regarding the install of the fender, I fabricated an extension for the two front mounts to raise it off the tire a little more. I then had to drill the mounting hole for the rear mount a little lower than factory. Went to PEP boys and bought an automotive plug (white) and placed it in the factory holes. Looks good, works good. Additionally, I mounted the brake lines on the rear position of the UFO clamps. Had to purchase longer bolts to do this. If you need more info, email me direct with your address and I will send you a sketch. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 21 Mar 1999 02:23:31 EST From: Cloudhid@aol.com Subject: Re: (klr650) I dare you...well oil righty then On 3/20/99, ajax@xmission.com writes: snip >eat some peanuts...all the while letting your oil settle. This way I didn't have to worry about making the conversion to qt/oz. The oil sump takes 2200 ml, or 2.2 liters to reach the top of the sight glass. I run the engine to fill the filter. Then the factory says, "If the moto has just been used, wait several minutes for the oil to drain down." So I shut it down and light a smoke while contemplating exactly how long "several minutes" is. I snuff the butt and realize that some mysteries may never be revealed to me. Glancing down at the sight gauge, I see that it's slightly below halfway. Now pour in the remaining 300 ml, which brings it to the top of the glass, for a total of 2.5 liters or 2 quarts and 20.536 ounces. snip >2.5 liters equals 2 qt. 19 ounces (this is Eldon's figure, I actually< >get 20 but use the 19 ounces)....My bike reaches the sight glass at< >1500 miles so it is using about 5 ounces every 750-1000 miles...< 2.5 liters = 2 quarts +20.536 ounces. Eldon isn't overfilling his oil tank, he's UNDERfilling it. My bike hasn't needed topping off between oil changes. Let this be a lesson fellow listers!! This is one of the old tried and true methods but it is complicated on the KLR for the simple reason that you have to take the Gas Tank off the beast in order to get the plug out? Surprised? So were we. The trick also is to shut the machine down at a time when you are running on the main and not any other circuits...so that means "clipping" along at a good highway pace and then turning the ignition off...coasting to a stop...pulling your tank and pulling the plug...it can be done. I believe shifting into 2nd was also recommended. Anyway, I tried this and it worked great no more black marks in the driveway. I wish I had known this sooner. My poor tranny. My other Kaw. also has stickey clutch plates. I can rock it lose by putting it in first and while pulling in the clutch roll the bike forward. This method did not work on the KLR. The rear tire would just slide. If you can free the plates before you hit the starter you will find it easier to get a bike with a low battery started.
