Good communication matters. Communication is like a trapdoor: nobody will stop listening to you just because you communicate too well, but people will stop listening to you if you communicate too poorly. What is wrong with writing in all lowercase letters? It emphasizes form and diminishes content, and so limits your ability to communicate effectively. Would you apply for a job and deliberately submit a resume that contained erroneous punctuation, spelling, and grammar? Of course not--because whoever read it would think you were an idiot, and you would not get the response you desire. So what do you suppose people think of you when you post a message to the list that contains erroneous punctuation, spelling, and grammar? It is quite common nowadays for people to insist that other people should not judge them, whether it be on their communication skills or on whatever other weakness they have. This in itself is idiocy. You may call the people who judge you Nazis, or elitists, or whatever you want, but you cannot stop them from judging you. Making judgements is what people do. If you have survived for any length of time riding a motorcycle in heavy traffic, it is because you have succeeded in making good judgements about the drivers around you. And you judge them on whatever information you have available: whether they are using a cell phone or applying makeup, their age, the type of car they are driving, the way they are driving. Give people a writing sample, and they will judge you on that. You can no more stop people from judging you than you can stop the Earth from turning. Of course, you may say "I don't care about communicating with the kind of stuffed shirt who reads resumes; I only want to communicate with other free thinkers like myself." That's fine. You and the other "free thinkers" can go off and mumble discordantly together--perhaps you'll make a pleasant noise that other people will like to listen to in their spare time. But don't complain if you find yourself left out of the most intellectually challenging and productive activities in our society. List - about a week ago, I posted 2 mechanical questions, trying to get my bike ready for an Alaska run this summer. A couple of folks have been very helpful with advice, but where are the old hands? Kurt? Fred? Mr T? I'd really like to get some "expert" advice on these questions - bike is a 98 KLR with 13000 mi, stock box, stock muffler, K&N filter and Dynojet stage I (don't remember offhand which jet size). 1 -I've noticed for the last year or so (about 8000 mi) that when I get off the highway, if I pull in(out? - I never know which word is the right one) the clutch, the engine idles down to about 200 RPM less than standard idle. If I keep the clutch in, it will stay like that for about 10 seconds, then gradually make its way back to normal idle. During those 10 seconds, if I give it ANY throttle, the engine abruptly quits. I can restart easily with the starter, or by just letting the clutch back out(in?). If I just downshift without blipping the throttle, all is normal - no hesitation if I roll on. I'm thinking for some reason this is a carb issue - maybe flooding the float bowl? I havent' checked float height yet. I did tear down the carb to re-jet last year, and I cleaned EVERYTHING well, and checked float height at that time. I should mention that this problem started BEFORE re-jetting. 2 - WHen letting out the clutch into 1st, it clunks and jerks once. If I accelerate hard in 1st or 2nd, I'll get 1 or 2 clunks and jerks. The jerking feels like something is slipping for just a half a second. (No jerk jokes please). If I really baby the throttle, it won't do it under acceleration, but still does when I let it out in 1st. It doesn't feel like an engine thing, the chain is a little old and sticky, but I can't see how it would be a chain thing either. I'm thinking it's a clutch issue?? What would be the smart move - just assume it's the clutch and buy a rebuild kit with plates/disks/springs? Or should I just open up the clutch and check it out first? Alright list, let's get your best shot. THanks. I have ridden my bike about 5600 miles with the stock set up with the preload cranked all the way. I have only bottomed it once going over a road crossing on a gravel road going about 80mph. Rode the bike out to Colorado from Iowa with tank panniers, soft bags and rear top case fully loaded. Was fine on the highway. Only left the soft bags on while on the four wheel drive roads in Colorado and had no trouble. Haven't been off road much and was going fairly slow when I did. No trouble. All that being said, I have purchased a heavier spring and plan to put it on before I go out to Moab this year and wind up out in more demanding single track. Come to think about it I did bottom out the back going rather slow over some big bumps down by the river and bent my license plate pretty good. I guess it comes down to how and whear you are going to be riding. You can ride it as is for a long time if you are careful. But if you are going off road and plan to ride aggressivly I would go ahead and buy a heavier rear spring. I just can't use them... When I bought my bike, it had a White Brothers Mikuni carb installed. I get much worse gas mileage than you with stock carbs report, and do not know whether I get any benefit. (I have not driven a stock KLR, and so have nothing to compare to.) Two questions: First, does anyone have experience optimizing the Mikuni carb that White Brothers sells? And second, does anyone with experience with both carbs recommend that I install a stock carb instead? I got the stock carb for this bike from the seller. I have a Supertrapp IDS and K&N filter installed. No holes drilled in the airbox.
