Date: 10 Aug 2000 04:30:13 -0500 This is my first message on the list. I am also fairly new to Kraftwerk; however, I've been enjoying their music very much. I am curious if anyone has gone to the Kraftwerk site lately (yes, I know it gets old pretty quickly). Every once in a while, I like to check if it has been updated in any way. Fat chance right? Anyway... I noticed that when I went to the KlingKlang Konsum Produkt site, it posted a message like: temporarily shut down for maintenance or something. So I thought that that was a half way good sign. I checked that link pretty frequently after that. One day, what do you know, a nice array of products were listed and shown. It's good to see new Kraftwerk memorabilia to buy. The bicyclist shirts must have been added by request from Ralf... eh? I don't know about the skateboard though. I tried to make this known on the list when I first found out. But it took some time to be okayed by the list operator. I scanned some of the most frequent list entries and didn't notice any mention of this, so I thought I would. Hope I haven't wasted a bunch of time retelling. I must say that I have set dreams and goals to make a Kraftwerk computer game. It is something I think is much needed because there aren't any that I am aware of and because of the fact that it is so doable... robots, radioactivity, space labs, trains, freeways... German progressive rock groupof the 1970s, which enjoyed international succes with its experiments with electronic pop. Influenced by equivalent groups in the UK, Kraftwerk established its reputation in 1975 with the hit instrumental 'Autobahn'. Other releases included the concept album Radioactivity (1975), Trans Europe Express (1977), Man Machine (1978) and Electric Cafe (1986) and the UK Number One single 'The Model' (1981). An as not yet unrealized dream of the band's members was to replace themselves with robots, which tour for them. Only question: What happened to Computerworld? And, does anyone know if there's a descent/large record-store in Sydney with some good KW records? Kaspar D.L. ===== "Don't let me die in a automobile I wanna lie in a open field. But essential and rewarding reading. To my surprise I read that Kraftwerk came to Australia with the 1983 Computer World tour. Does anyone know what cities, venues and dates they played? As I am new to the list I am not sure if this has been done before (or recently), but what would list members consider to be Kraftwerk's "crowning achievement" officially released track? Personally, without having heard the albums before Autobahn, I think that for me it's perhaps Trans Europe Express, and perhaps even the version on The Mix. Obviously there are many bands and recordings that appear to be direct descendants/inheritors of the Kraftwerk legacy, but it was interesting to hear Chemical Brother's "Surrender" CD this last weekend, for the first time in a long time, after immersing myself in Kraftwerk for the last month. In that context I found the similarities quite striking. The melodies allow the listener to become intimate with Kraftwerk rather than take a back seat, need I say, on a trip down the Autobahn. Although you can hear a fine example of Kraftwerk using flanger on drums as early as 1970 ("Vom Himmel Hoch"), a noteworthy example of flanger usage on drums which pre-dates it would be Mitch Mitchell's drum solo at the end of "Bold As Love", which appears on the 1967 Jimi Hendrix LP "Axis: Bold As Love". ouija@mail.com _____NetZero Free Internet Access and Email______ http://www.netzero.net/download/index.html # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info kraftwerk" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email kraftwerk@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. # Other questions? I'd say the Experience used the effect pretty often, and (although no example springs to mind) I'd guess the Beatles do as well there are probably examples On the Magical Mystery tour EP... I'm pretty sure "I Am The Walrus" has some. These are just examples from pop, mind you. I'd bet there are experimental artists that predate both band's usage of this recording technique. As for bands "influenced" by KW, I just wish for once there was a band that's influence ran a bit deeper than samples. To me, samples don't show influence. They show that you've heard something and you like the sound. If I sample Black Sabbath, my neighbor's lawn mower and a cat, again, it doesn't say anything. So, if I'm a "techno" artist, all I need to do is sample a techno fore-father to show my influence? Nope. Sorry. Doesn't work for my ears. You've got to write a SONG that although dance-able, is also listen-able, and has the basic elements of a good song. Melody, movements, etc. To date, I haven't heard many (okay, any) artists that do this as well as Kraftwerk. At least not from the techno field. Yah, they can stuff the right amount of beats into a song, they can make them sonically interesting at times, but none of 'em seem to be able to write a song! I don't think my idea of a song is outdated either. I listen to many types of music, and even some noise artists (like NON) can make an interesting piece (with no music at all), that has many elements of a good song, or piece. Mouse on Mars will occasionally come close, but unfortunately, my favorite song of theirs "Die Seele Von Brian Wilson" is actually a bit of a sample (although not of the origial) from the Beach Boy's "Wind Chimes". # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info kraftwerk" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email kraftwerk@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. # Other questions? Man Machine and Computer World are close runners-up. TEE has a hypnotic quality to it. Europe Endless is a beautiful track and I loved Showroom Dummies the very first time I heard it. Computer World also has beautiful melodies, especially Computer World, CW2, and Computer Love. Man Machine has a bite to it with its funky rhythms and sounds. While The Model may have been composed to be more commercially appealing, it is the first song by KW I heard and seems to be the one most frequently covered by others with their tribute recordings. Speaking of which, I just got a copy of Balanescu Quartet's "Possessed" CD with five KW covers: Robots (The Mix version); The Model; Autobahn (only six minutes worth); Computer Love (again The Mix version); and Pocket Calculator (with vocals!) Did I mention this quartet is a string quartet? Yep, KW using two violins, a viola and cello. Very cool. The Model is my favorite...very pretty, as is Computer Love. The lettering on the CD uses a font similar to the font used on The Man Machine. Thank you very much Coen for settling my doubts, but now I have a more query. On Kraftwerk International Discography webpage the catalogue number for the two regular UK CDsingle issues are EMI CD KLANG 001 2/00 and EMI CD EM 562 3/00. I actually forgot about these MIDIs as I've been so busy with other work and projects. I originally intended to render most of the Kraftwerk catalog as MIDI but time simply didn't allow this. That particular MIDI (Pocket Calculator - Live) was programmed by me about 2 years ago based on the arrangement from one of the live 1991 concert bootlegs. There are other Kraftwerk MIDI files still on the old (ie. rarely updated) Resonance Underground web site: http://www.ameritech.net/users/jtalbert/krftwerk.htm Currently this link is not accessible from the main index. You are welcome to download the rest and post them to your server if you wish. It is recommended that many of these .MID files be played back on an AWE64 sound card with a high quality sound font (as there is specific NRPN programming embedded within.) Any other high quality MIDI device will suffice but of course any AWE64 specific programming will be ignored or possibly give strange results. BTW: There is an Efofex instrumental version of "The Robots" (original 1978 arrangement) which was recently "recreated" using only analog equipment. If time ever allows, vocoded vocals will be added as well. Should there be any interest, the full version of this track can be made publicly available. Here are brief clips: Stream: http://www.efofex.net/ra/~robots288sclip.ram 64 kpbs MP3: http://www.efofex.net/mp3/efofex-robots64m.mp3 For those who are curious, there are two new Efofex projects in the works. One, which will be entitled "Midistücke Vol. 1" is a direct word play on Stockhausen's LP titled "Pianostücke" and is a modern musical tribute to the experimental avante garde electronic works of the 50s and 60s. The title of the other Efofex CD is yet to be announced. The Efofex "Stress" CD released earlier this year is still available at ab-cd.com, amazon.com and efofex.net as well as selected record stores) Kindest regards, -John ______________________________________________________________________ [soundofelectronics] 000 111 001 10 100 111 0010 0 0100 0 1010 1 010 111 10 00 1010 000 ETX http://www.efofex.net/ http://www.mp3.com/efofex/ # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info kraftwerk" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email kraftwerk@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. # Other questions? And another question: i'm trying to put my vinyl albums on cd. I downloaded some really cool programmes (depopper, wavcorrector) that "repair" the effect of scratches, dust,... The only thing that's bothering me is the background noise (i think the correct english term is white noise). Is there software available to remove this white noise? geert ===== "Thru the darkness of Future Pas The magician longs to see One chance out between two worlds Fire - Walk with me." __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
