I´m a new memeber of the mailing list and I´ld like to say something about the S&S and the synthetic voices used by KW. I was´nt able to get a S&S yet, so I don´t know it exactly but: There has to be a way to programm words or sentences in it. OMD also used the S&S on "Dazzle Chips" and if You listen to the spoken words of "Computerworld" like "Reisen, Zeit, Medizin, Unterhaltung" You will notice that it´s the voice of the S&S programmed in a way to make an englisch talking machine speak German. Now I want to refer to the brilliant letter about the vocoder voices that I got from the mailing list: I read in an interview that KW used synthetic voices on "Electric Cafe" that had been programmed by universitiy memebers who were involved into synthetic speech research. And another thing is that Patrick Bussy wrote in his book about KW, that they got a synthetic speech module from the army in the middle of the 70ies, I think that this one may be the voice that introduces KW to the audience when the concerts start "Meine Daaameeen uunnd Heeeerrren ...". A friend of mine was at an auction for old synthesizers years ago and Ralf Hütter, who was also there bought everything that he could get, You know their parents are Doctors and architects, they always had enough money to buy newest technology ( at least they had enough money to let the "vitual mannequinns"- company programm their "Musique Non Stop"- Video in th US years ago which cost A LOT at that time) adn they always had contact to highly experienced professionals, so I think it would´nt had been a problem for them to get access to the speech chip of the S&S- machine, at least if You notice that they always were very engaged in sound technologies and able to build own new devices. By the way, I´m very pleased that there are some nerds out there who are interested in the same useless crap as I´m. Excuses for my horrible English. It does sound a lot like a S&S, though the inflection is just a little off.=20 I would say that one of these conditions is true: - - KW managed to create a vocoder that sounds just like the S&S. - - KW hacked a S&S to get it to say what they wanted. - - The words are from one of the S&S expansion packs. - - The words are from the Speak & Read. I don't know what its vocabulary is like.=20 - --=20 /* Soleil "Ra" Lapierre http://www.cuug.ab.ca/~lapierrs */ # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info kraftwerk" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email kraftwerk@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. # Other questions? The Super Speak & Spell sounds much smoother than the original. It could not have produced any of the words KW used. The regular S&S sounds right, but does not seem to have any of the words used in Computer World. They might be on one of the expansion packs. The Speak & Read also sounds right, and has the ability to say any word you type in that is in its memory. I could get it to say "hnumber" but not "business" or "computer". Again, these words might be on one of the expansion packs. I really need to find the expansion packs for these things. I also really need to find the time to sample all their sounds. It's not easy since the words come up randomly. - -- /* Soleil "Ra" Lapierre http://www.cuug.ab.ca/~lapierrs */ # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info kraftwerk" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email kraftwerk@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. # Other questions?
