Age frankly has no bearing, Ralf sings the same as he always has done, and it wrong to suggest that any new material would contain fewer lyrics on the basis that they are getting older. David Bowie and Iggy Pop would have retired by now. Have you heard Bryan Ferry of Roxy Music? He still sounds fantastic. What is a good singer? A good singer is someone who can evoke the spirit of the music they are singing to, someone who is emotionally in tune with the music - not necessarily musically in tune. A good folk singer can't sing opera, and a good opera singer can't sing folk (generally speaking). Can you imagine Frank Sinatra singing heavy metal? It just doesn’t work. Music is art. Achieving a recognized standard of playing an instrument or singing scales is a craft. Art is about emotion, craft is about skill. To sing Beethoven's Ode To Joy requires a great deal of craftsmanship from the singers and the musicians. To sing a punk song does not require much craftsmanship, however both can be intensely emotional. Both can be good art. If Ralph or Karl are bad singers, then their singing is not of the required craftsmanship needed to express the emotion. I don't think this is the case. KW's music requires musical skills but not so much vocal skills. In my opinion, the vocal should never sound too dominant or tuneful on a kW song. KW like to be compared to the Beachboys and the Beachboys make surf music, evoking sun, sea, love and the USA. To do this requires harmonious singing. KW evokes the spirit of industry, modernity, introvercy and Germany. This requires a vocal that is not impassioned, but fragile and human. How many adjectives are there in a KW lyric? The lyrics and singing are the finishing touches, the spices that bring out the flavour of the music. The vocal should be a little bit raw to offset the perfectionism. And when they play live? well that is a one off imperfection only for the people who really understand KW, hence no official live album. ian t _________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com. # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info kraftwerk" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email kraftwerk@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. # Other questions? I know Bussy wrote this in his book, but it's one of the more unbelievable stories in my opinion. Not that it matters much to the Telephone Call really, or other Kraftwerk songs. Did anyone ask Bartos himself about this?
