It uses flimsy plastic laser optical discs for sounds and sounds very very very similar to a mellotron. I can now confirm that Kraftwerk used this for their mellotronesque sounds - Ralf has been quoted as saying that they used a 'light disc organ made in florida' - which is an orchestron....and once the "Violin" disc is inserted into the slot and begins spinning on the red velvet inside the machine, you get the EXACT same sound as the strings on TEE - and i mean EXACT!!!!!!!!!! same with the "Vocal Choir" disc - it has Radioactivity written all over it - scratchy, noisy, and very very eerie! - --a fun thing to do - play the eerie TEE chords and turn the little pitch knob down like the train is travelling past - just like the song!!!!! cool................................. # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Email majordomo@xmission.com with "info kraftwerk" in the message. # Postings must go to kraftwerk@xmission.com -- replies go to original sender. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 13 Sep 1997 17:38:22 +0100 From: Mark Reed Subject: (kw) Kraftwerk Box Set I now have a copy of the legendary 12" Box Set issued by EMI in May and am accepting offers for its sale. I asked Klaus if it was worth posting it, and he said yes, sure, Bussy’s quotings are well-known, but the original thing remains a rarity. What Klaus says, God says. So here we go. I kept both Ralf’s interview and the pseudo-hip and rather silly comments of Bizot, which are his trademark, otherwise the whole thing would have been hard to understand. But please don’t flame ME, I’m NOT responsible for some of the stupid comments. I’m just translating. (sorry, ROBOT, some more America bashing...). jbv (was here) - -------------------------------------------- EVEN THE ROBOTS ARE TRIPPING... It looks like a serial story. Twenty years later, here I am, back in Dusseldorf at the Kling Klang studio, the land of the robots tripping in the middle of the Ruhr, synthetic and skilfull. And here is Ralf Hutter again, identical to himself, a nervous leg jumping out of his cycling shorts, his hair always perfectly combed, hardly a wrinkle and the same soft voice. Only the machines have changed. Micro-computers are stacked on the racks in the blue neon lights. Kraftwerk, the most sampled band after James Brown. From house to techno, from Bambaataa to Front 242, who knows how many hit makers stole their sound or their riffs from Kraftwerk... They release an album of remixes. Their wonderful sound inventions still work, always spacey and mind-blowing. Kraftwerk spacey ? Do you think I’m joking ? “Ten years ago, Ralf says, we played in Bombay. We brought our high tech environment with us and we found it quite strange. The reaction of the indian people surprised us. They told us that “Autobahn”, our first hit, sounds like a raga, their inspired music. It was quite stimulating.” Everything comes from an endless work on sound and repetitions. Their studio : a futuristic factory looking like the dream of any sound maniac. Four consoles are facing each other, with stacks of effects and computers in the background. It took five years to Kraftwerk to store their catalog of noises in the computer, from the forge to the hooter, from the microphone larsen to video games. Then everything had to be fine tuned so that it could be played like Bach starting to play organ. The Kraftwerk people step into the studio like monks getting ready for electronic vespers, every evening at 5:00 pm and until 1:00 in the morning. They hack, away from the show-biz, in what Ralf Hutter calls their living room. “We have a buddhist technic to keep patient”. And it lasts for about 20 years. It all started around 68-69. Ralf and Florian are students in Dusseldorf. They have long hair and want to open their minds by any mean. The environment is friendly. Dusseldorf is the capital city of Fluxus, the modern art movement leaded by Beuys, John Cage and Nam June Paik. People hack random music, mecanical pianos, happenings and video. Not so far away, in Koln, the great master of modern electro-acoustic music Karlheinz Stockhausen. Two of his students are Irmin Schmidt and Holger Cuzkay who are about to found the band Can, and who are currently recording with Bill Laswell. Florian and Ralf remember a trip to Koln where, after taking some LSD, they found themselves at a Stockhausen concert which blowed their mental barriers. Their fate was traced. When Ralf evokes those crazy times, then his voice of great vegetarian cyclist is shaken with nostalgy. “All the forms of art used to be mixed together. We could produce low-budget experimental movies and hack the sound for a few pennies. Ha, everything has really changed. Look, New Age makes me yawn. It’s a kind of Valium, of paper wall, of functional sleepiness. I keep thinking that the best spacey musics are from 1969-1972, the first albums by Popol Vuh, Tangerine Dream and Ash Ra Tempel”. It is true that back then people wanted to discover everything and to go always one step beyond. Endless organ sounds, solemn chords fading into each others, unique whispers, wavings, Klaus Schulze playing with a symphonic orchestra to mix woodwinds with synthetic sounds. Kraftwerk and Conrad Schnitzler already used to work at some techno-folk music, an industrial ethnology inspired by forges, highways or pocket calculators. The band Popol Vuh used to play with liquids, turkish percussions and mantras : “It’s the synthesiser that took me to yoga, used to say Florian Fricke the founder of the band, and I went to religion through the physical theory of vibrations. By studying eastern musics, people can re-discover the cure power of music”. In front of the Germans, there was already the american school. Steve Reich, Terry Riley and Philip Glass used to rock their improvisations with an hypnotic fluctuation that influenced the dry, metallic or cristal-clear harmonies of Kraftwerk. Kraftwerk. There’s a good reason why they are the semi-gods of rap and house. “We were the first ones to use the drum machine on stage, especially for the concert in Boulogne-Billancourt with you in 1973. Back then, no drummer accepted to use the machine. They were deprived from the physical side of drumming. That cerebral, automatic and hallucinating rythmic used to fascinate us. But we still keep a possibility to exit from it and to manually improvise over the robotic background. Q : So you never became a robot ? A : No. We play the machines and the machines play us. We want to orchestrate the mecanic ballet of urban life. Miles away from the pure spacey ones. Because we are mocking. We don’t mix with the world of rock or dance, even if we have been enormously sampled. Apart from Bowie, Eno and Byrne, we’ve never been acquainted with anyone. Except in New York when the DJs started to remix us for house parties, and when Afrika Bambaataa used our music for Planet Rock. We have been very surprised by the collage they did with our musics. Our most ripped-off rythms ? Those from Robots, Numbers, the Model, Home Computer.” Even german unification should, according to Ralf Hutter, finally contribute to a come-back to spiritual and intelligence in Europe ! Surprising ? “There will be devils, says Ralf, like xenophobia and violence which spoil Germany, but also a healthy distrust against materialism that made our country an american colony. They will say our values are worth as much as yours. After buying cars and VCRs, I’m sure they’re gonna ask : where are we going with cars, and what are we watching on VCRs ? They are over at last, those boring 80s. During all these years, we did our best stay awake, to refuse sleeping drugs. Think about the fact that, anywhere in the West, pills are given to children to calm them down at school ! Europe itself can become a great multi-cultural society. That’s what we’d like to say with our next record.” Kraftwerk are very excited by a project. It’s the musical, video and artistic garden that the city of Barcelona ordered to Brian Eno. “Philip Glass, David van Tiegem, our robots, a whole collection of musical artists on a hill playing with perceptions.” The anti-Dysneyland. For 1993. In the meantime, on the road with their electronic living room, typing on their machines from one city to the next, the Kraftwerk people take the opportunity to exercise in mental and physical sport. Ralf loves to leave the bus 100 kilometers from the cities and cycle to the next soundcheck. Once in town, he visits galleries and lively places. Perhaps will you meet him on the next 12 and 13 november somewhere around Beaubourg. # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Email majordomo@xmission.com with "info kraftwerk" in the message. # Postings must go to kraftwerk@xmission.com -- replies go to original sender. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 13 Sep 1997 21:55:02 +0100 From: jbv Subject: Re: (kw) Album price? I always love your esprit!! :) Thank you so much. Actually I have a very good opinion about japanese people : everytime i was in your country, I always found dozens of people ready to help. When groups of japanese people travel abroad, lots of people find them irritating. The reason for this, I think, is that everything works so well in Japan (cars, phones, everything) that japanese must be scared to death when they find themselves for the first time in cities like L.A. , Paris or Bangkok because everything is much more messy and cahotic. For instance in Paris, you have to try 3 or 4 public phones before you find a working one, when in Tokyo or Osaka, I've always been able to make long distance calls from any public phone on the street. > BTW, could you smile at EURASIA's homepage? Why should I smile ? Yes, the lists are quite hard to read, but they seem to have a pretty large (if not exhaustive) collection of european records from the 70s. Of course, some prices are amazing, like this one : MUSICA ELETTRONICA VIVA " the sound pool " FRA ACTUEL 69 FOC ) M/M- $327 but I'm sure it's a real rarity, because I haven't seen it in any record store for at least 20 years. And someone replied that ToneFloat was. Well, ToneFloat is readily available in Scotland in various shops (HMV, Virgin, Tower). I bought it just last week on CD and it cost me only =A312.99. It is available on other formats aswell. Sounds like the chap who paid $250 was diddled. # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Email majordomo@xmission.com with "info kraftwerk" in the message. # Postings must go to kraftwerk@xmission.com -- replies go to original sender. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 13 Sep 1997 22:21:06 +0100 From: jbv Subject: Re: (kw) Album price? jbv wrote: > > Actually, there will be someone at the entrance of the Karlruhe gig > sitting at a small table and selling the new album. You know, it's quite hard for 50-something people to come back into bizness after 7 years of silence. It's like they had to start a new career. Who remembers them ? And once the first 1500 copies are sold and after they refund the money to their friends, they hope to be able to press another 1000 copies with the benefits. Or they're thinking of starting a small independent label and produce / distribute singles by local bands of the Dusseldorf area. They might also issue a bi-monthly 4-pages B&W fanzine with graphics inspired by some web sites and some rave flyers. They were thinking of starting their own web site, and Florian bought a book about HTML last month, but finally he gave up, saying that he's too old for that. So I hope you will all support the old generations of electronic music and buy at least one copy of the new album, so that Ralf and Florian could get some pocket money before they definitely disapear inside the Kling Klang Retirement House somewhere in the Dusseldorf countryside, pissing off nurses with stories about the good old time when oscillators had to be hand-tuned and when the frequency drifted anyway. jbv # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Email majordomo@xmission.com with "info kraftwerk" in the message. # Postings must go to kraftwerk@xmission.com -- replies go to original sender. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 13 Sep 1997 22:32:52 +0200 From: jss@onestone.de Subject: Re: (kw) Album price? And - bad news: It's limited to 1000 rsp. 500 copies. Heyy! Just bought a copy of TIME PIE at HMV today-- I think Hypnotic released it on Tuesday. Hey, this album is fun! Nothing like KW, but it's still cool. Don't know how to describe it-- it sort of resembles YMO, Kraftwelt (!), Telex, Yello... whatever. I don't have a favorite track yet, but 'Speechdancer' could go over big in NYC, and 'Mosquito' is hilarious-- I envision a music video in the vein of 'New Frontier'. A little 1950s-animated Wolfgang chasing after cartoon mosquitos with his new flyswatter... 'Guiding Ray' runs a little long, but it builds toward a good rave-up near the end and has actual drums in it-- I think. Didn't he sample a loop of his drumming because he was so rusty at it? "Naked Japanese' is a good exercise in rhythm. (I'm going into detail because of an earlier posting that asked if anyone had heard TIME PIE and could say something about it.) About Robo-tronik construction: Check out www.robotstore.com for just about everything you'll need in that area. They've got servomotors, control boards, software, books, kits, and the mighty Nitinol Muscle Wire. I just ordered their catalog!
