Low budget, and kind of surreal in spots. But the parts detail the life of Leon Theremin are really interesting...kidnapped by the KGB in 1936 (in New York!), forced to invent listening devices for several decades in the USSR, and finally allowed to be a musician again late in his life...everyone presumed he was dead and suddenly this film-maker finds him alive and living in Moscow. Whoa. >Anyway, the movie was quite interesting and enlightening. As I recall the >title was actually "Theremin". I bought a Big Briar (Moog's Company) Etherwave about three weeks after seeing that movie. Damn fun instrument. Well, Saturday I got my hands on a copy of Time Pie. I like it a lot so far (I've only listened to it three times). Very VERY kraftwerky in spots. Flur's Kraftwerk percussion is pretty obvious as are some of his sound effects. The whole albums sounds like what Kraftwerk would sound like if Computerworld was made in the past few years. The vocals are kind of strange on a few songs...they sound kind of like a mad scientist singing (I expect him to suddenly sing "fools I'll destroy them all!"). Overall, it sounds like Kraftwerk meets Ryuchi Sakamoto. =--------------------------Eric Oehler-----------------------------= | wonko@itis.com http://www.itis.com/~wonko | =------------------------------------------------------------------= Can you think of another word for "synonym"? # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Email majordomo@xmission.com with "info kraftwerk" in the message. # Postings must go to kraftwerk@xmission.com -- replies go to original sender. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 13 Oct 1997 11:46:17 -0400 From: MCINTYRE@pa.msu.edu Subject: re: (kw) Theremin >From: Ra >Recently one of the cable stations here played a movie about the inventor >of the Theremin, the first electric musical instrument. Technically, the Theremin was not the first electric musical instrument, although it's certainly had more success than its predessor, the Teleharmonium. The full title of the Theremin movie is _Theremin: An Electronic Odyssey_, and it is available on videotape, although the scene of Sam Hoffman demonstrating the Theremin on the Mickey Mouse Club has been edited out of the home video version. I saw it twice: once in the theater during its initial release, the second time in my electronic-music class. It was so funny! (now my really bad english translation) "... admittedly when I was young I also listened to Kraftwerk. Besides I remember meeting Carl Bartos at the New Music Seminar '92. There were statements like 'I am Franky Bones and I brought Rave to Brooklyn', 'I am Derrick May and I invented Techno' or 'I am Money Penny and I published the first magazine'. Bartos was standing beside and I asked him, what he thinks of it. He told me not to care about him, he was only listening. The tremendous influence of Kraftwerk on Techno-Music seemed to disappoint him. It would have never occured to him to go on stage and announce that Techno-Music wouldn't exist without him. ..." They say that "according the informations given by EMI the release date of the new Kraftwerk album was delayed (we noticed THAT) and now scheduled for January 1998"... The article was entitled: KRAFTWERK "Der Arlesienne". I guess this title is nothing but some author's fantasy. What could it mean otherwise? What a fascinating instrument. Issue No 4 of Grand Royal (the Beasty Boys' magazine) contains lots of material and LONG interviews with people involved in creating, selling or using MOOG synths and also some stuff on the Theremin. I think they actually build one from scratch as well. I can only recommend the mag and especially this issue (although Issue 5 is the "Miami Bass" issue and a lot of fun as well) I envy everybody who gets a chance to go to the concert. Record !
