Here are some responses I got: ______________________________________________________________________ For good bang/buck - - dual PII 440LX-based motherboard (266 for better b/b, 300 if you got $) + perhaps overclock 266->300 / 300->333 (if it works..) - - xxxMeg SDRAM (dimm) - - Leadtek L2300 AGP - - 19" monitor - - 6Gig ultrDMA/33 drive - - NT - - Miro DC30 / FAST AV Master if videocard needed For lots of $$ add - - ultrawide SCSI - - highend 3d card - - bigger monitor, more mem etc.. - - PVR if videocard needed or just a highend Intergraph system. ______________________________________________________________ I'm real happy with my dual pII Intergraph, SN benchmarks only maginally slower than an Alpha, plus I can run After Effects, Fractal Design, etc. Intergraph tech support rocks, not that you'll need it too often, their boxes are extremely well designed, there's even an internal temperature alarm. Netpower makes a pretty mean box too. _______________________________________________________________ If it's performance, the best Intel is a Dual PII-300 - but it's pretty expensive. You'd get similar perfomance from a PII-266, for a lot less money. If you're on a budget, pick up a Dual PPro180, overclock it to 200, and away you go. Alternately get a single PII-266 to work on and a cheap Dual Pro-180/200 barebones and screamernet to it. For video, seems you can't go past the Leadtek L2300 (or Diamond 1000Pro?) based on the Permedia II chip. Creative labs are also promising a cheap board based on the same chip, but I don't know that it's out yet, or how good their OpenGL drivers are. If you're mainly doing LW work, WinNT will be the best choice. It's far more solid/stable than '95 and a tad quicker (full 32bit). And things like the PVR tend to work better under NT. Seems to be the way to go for pro work. You can always set up a Win95 dual boot system for playing Quake (though GL Quake under NT on the Leadtek card goes well :) I've always assembled my own systems to spec, rather than buying, say, a Compaq off the shelf, mainly because it's cheaper here (New Zealand), and off-the-shelf machines often don't have the specs you want exactly. I'd recommend : Dual PII-266 (or a single if your workload isn't too bad) 128Mb RAM 4-9Gb Hard drive, preferably SCSI (get an Adaptec controller) but IDE is cheap and quick Leadtek L2300 graphics card 17" Monitor (Get a good mid-range one, not a crappy low end one - Viewsonics are nice) Window NT 4 Shouldn't set you back too much, and it'll rock... _________________________________________________________________ - -- Justin Knowles President Mythic Wolf Studios http://www.utanimator.com/mws.htm Utah's Animators Exchange http://www.utanimator.com - - ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 29 Oct 1997 22:32:26 -0700 From: Justin Knowles Subject: (lwgroup) (no subject) Here's another responce I got about the intel computers Andrew Weiler wrote: > At 04:04 PM 10/29/97 -0700, Justin Knowles wrote: > I'm real happy with my dual pII Intergraph, SN benchmarks only maginally > slower than an Alpha, plus I can run After Effects, Fractal Design, etc. > Intergraph tech support rocks, not that you'll need it too often, their > boxes are extremely well designed, there's even an internal temperature > alarm. > Netpower makes a pretty mean box too. Thank you, James Knowles - ------ Russian Scientist Jailed by FBI; SLC Participating in 23 July 2001 Demonstration In 1998 Congress passed the DMCA (Digital Millenium Copyright Act) with the expectation that it would bring America into the 21st century. The DMCA was immediately taken up as a weapon to land US teachers, students, private citizens, and magazines in court. Their crimes? Private citizens wrote software to watch their personally-owned DVDs on their computers. A PhD dissertation describes security flaws in consumer equipment. A university professor and his class took up the public challenge by the recording industry to demonstrate flaws in their new "unbreakable" technology -- and succeeded. In an unprecedented move, on 16 July 2001 the FBI arrested Dmitry Sklyarov, Russian PhD student, computer scientist, a husband and loving father of two young children, on criminal charges. His crime? He conducted research with a team of programmers to help their Moscow-based employer develop a program. It allows Russian citizens enjoyment of electronic books bought and owned legally, and offered it for sale. Dmitry and his co-workers visited the USA, the land of free speech, in order to give a lecture about their research. His 15 July presentation demonstrated severe security flaws in Adobe eBooks. The day after the presentation the FBI took Dmitry into custody as he and a co-worker left their hotel to fly home to Moscow. He has been denied contact with his family, and was not allowed to speak to the Russian Colsulate until 19 July. Since then (as of 22 July) no one has been allowed to see Dmitry Sklyarov, not even a lawyer. He is currently somewhere in the bowels of the federal pennitentary system. The FBI has charged him with traficking security circumvention devices and have labeled him a "hacker." This case has galvanized numberous civil liberty organizations already fighting the DMCA. A letter from the EFF Executive Directory Shari Steele to Attorney General John Ashcroft may be found at http://www.eff.org/IP/DMCA/US_v_Sklyarov/20010720_letter_2_ashcroft.html Rick Boucher (D, Virginia) was quoted on NPR as saying: "Circumvention, even to exercise legitimate rights such as the fair use rights that courts have upheld repeatedly over the years, is still a criminal offense [according to the DMCA]. I think in passing this measure, Congress did not contemplate the misuse of the provision, which is now rather apparent given the arrest, and I think it does tend to build a case for substantial reform." Grassroots activists have organized peaceful demonstrations across the US, Europe, and Australia to raise pulblic awareness of Dmitry's imprisonment and the gross flaws in the DMCA. The local demonstration iformation is thus: WHEN/WHERE Monday, July 23, 11AM at the Federal Building in downtown Salt Lake City at the corner of 100 South and State Street.
