It's just that when I hear that phrase, it really makes me think of how sad the state of videogaming is. No one wants a challenge anymore. I remember in EB once when I told this guy what to do on Eternal Darkness. He asked if I had the game. I said yes and that I'd beaten it three times. Right away, the next question was, "Did you use a guide?" The guy was very shocked when I told him I didn't. It's like guides are such a commonplace thing when new games come out. As Japan sits through a very hot summer (it's been said that the country will be the among the first to feel the effects of global warming, and we believe it!), the weekly Famitsu magazine released sales data for the first half of the year, showcasing the big winners and comparing everything to the first half of 2001. If sales stats tickle your happy, see below for the full story. Other than that, there hasn't been too much to go crazy for here in Japan. Mario Sunshine is still the biggest game title around, PS2 is selling better than ever (the new colors seem to have caused a two-fold sales spike), and... well that's about it. Oh yeah... and don't believe the hype about Choco-Pie, one of Korea's favorite treats. A Choco-Pie is really just a stale-tasting Ding Dong. You heard it hear first! FAMITSU SCORE GET This week's Famitsu has the first ever review for Capcom's Automodelista. How did this first ever Online driving game for the PS2 do? Check out the scores: Automodelista, PS2 - 9, 7, 7, 7 TV animation X, PSX - 6, 6, 6, 6 Memorial Song, PS2 - 7, 6, 6, 7 Crash Gear Turbo, WS - 7, 6, 6, 7 Harukanaru Tokyu no naka de, GBA - 8, 9, 7, 7 Mister Driller Ace, GBA - 8, 8, 8, 8 Hmm... there seems to be some disagreement on Automodelsta, although the reviews aren't too clear on what's wrong (especially the girl's review -- she just describes the stuff that you can do in the game!!!). We'll judge for our little ol' selves when we pick up the game next week. GET RATED Yes, believe it or not, Japan still doesn't have a solid ranking system in place for its games. While Sega made an effort to mark all the porn games that appeared on its Saturn system as being for adults only, look to any game that doesn't contain boobies or... what's the cute name for vagina... and you won't find a rating what-so-ever. Until now, that is. You may have heard of something called CERO, or Computer Entertainment Rating... followed by some sort of Kanji which apparently lends the "O" to the name. Anyhow, this ratings group, akin to America's ESRB, will be providing ratings for Japanese software starting in October. Apparently, five ratings will be available: 18 and up, Above 15, Above 12, All Ages, and Learning/Education/Database. Let's hope these markings don't make our beautiful Japanese boxes ugly! FIRST HALF RANK-IN! This IGN Japan column has been grabbing sales data from Famitsu for months now, but looking at things week by week, only a few things are clear: 1. The PS2 rules all. 2. The Xbox rules none. 3. Konami is very big in Japan. If you want a better look at the bigger picture in Japanese sales, you've come to the right place. This week's Famitsu has a look at the first half of the year in review, and we've translated some of the information here for you. It all begins with the top 100 sales, the top ten winners of which should come as no surprise to anyone who's been paying attention: 1. World Soccer Winning Eleven 6 - Konami, PS2, 4/25: 975,605 2. Onimusha 2 - Capcom, PS2, 3/7: 963,529 3. Kingdom Hearts - Square, PS2, 3/28: 787,513 4. Super Robot Wars Impact - Banpresto, PS2, 3/28: 625,364 5. Virtua Fighter 4 - Sega, PS2, 1/31: 526,562 6. Saka-Tsuku 2002 - Sega, PS2, 3/7: 510,557 7. From TV animation ONEPIECE GB2 - Bandai, PS, 3/20: 500,480 8. Xenosaga Episode 1 - Namco, PS2, 2/28: 423,299 9. Gran Turismo Concept 2001 Tokyo - SCE, PS2, 1/1: 334,218 10. Gundam Giren's Ambition - Bandai, PS2, 5/2: 333,162 Yes, it's all PS2 titles, with the exception of one PSX title. This is in contrast to the top ten for the first half of last year which included plenty in the way of GameBoy and GBA title. Here's that list: 1. Gran Turismo 3 A-Spec - SCE, PS2, 4/28: 1,097,801 2. Dragon Quest Monsters 2 - Enix, GB, 3/9: 1,063,297 3. Onimusha - Capcom, PS2, 1/25: 849,444 4. Super Mario Advance - Nintendo, GBA, 3/21: 592,987 5. Super Robot Wars Taisen Alpha Gaiden - Banpresto, PS, 3/29: 539,202 6. Yugiyoh Dual Monsters 4 - Konami, GB, 12/7/2000: 458,648 7. Pocket Monsters Crystal Version - Nintendo, GB, 12/14/2000: 448,570 8. World Soccer Winning Eleven 5 - Konami, PS2, 3/15: 431,736 9. From TV Animation ONEPIECE GB - Bandai, PS, 3/15: 367,740 10. Legend of Zelda Fushigi no Ki no Mi... - Nintendo, GB, 2/27: 352,208 A look at the percentages of software sold for the first half of this year compared to the first half of last year confirms that the PS2 saw a huge upswing while the GameBoy dropped a few notches: SYSTEM 2002 2001 PS2 61.3% 27.8% GBA 15.6% 12.4% PSX 10.2% 19.0% NGC 8.2% NA GB 2.1% 27.2% DC 1.4% 4.6% Xbox 1.2% NA N64 Not Listed 6.5% WS Not Listed 2.5% You'll notice that the Dreamcast beat the Xbox in software percentage for the first half of this year. Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha. Also, you'll note that there are no million sellers this year compared to the two for last year. Of course, Winning Eleven reached the platinum mark in the first few weeks of July, and we're pretty sure that Onimusha 2 has also reached the mark; it certainly shipped in the millions. See the end of this section for the complete top one hundred list (yes, we have lots of time on our hands). This year's software sales marks somewhat of a change from last year in the genre department. Specifically, RPGs are down and action games are way up! Let's have a look. GENRE 2002 2001 Action 36 22 RPG 18 29 Simulation 12 7 Action/Adventure 7 5 Action/Sim 4 1 Simulation/RPG 3 4 Simulator 3 3 Board Game 3 3 Adventure 3 2 Adventure/Sim 2 3 Action/RPG 2 5 Table Game 2 1 Shooting/Adventure 1 5 Adventure/Puzzle 1 1 Puzzle/Action 1 2 Card Game 1 2 Other 1 5 According to the magazine, the jump in action titles is owed to all the soccer games released this year (apparently soccer games are considered action titles) and the large number of action titles for the Game Boy Advance. So who's making all these games? The top one hundred list is populated by a number of companies, but as usual, Nintendo has the most slots, with 16 (although none in the top ten). Konami comes in second with 14 slots followed by newbie Sega with 7 and Enix, Sony Computer Entertainment and Bandai with 6 a piece. It would seem that if Sega means it when they promise to become the number one third party, they're squarely targeting Konami right now. Although, we doubt we'll see a replay of the shouting match going on between EA and Sega over in America. A look at the top ten alone ought to tell you which hardware is on top. There was no stopping the PS2 in the first half of the year as Sony's big black (and now blue) system flew off shelves with nearly double the numbers of its nearest competitor, the Game Boy Advance. Here are the solid numbers for each hardware unit. Below the numbers, you'll find the month by month sales from January to June (or for the Xbox, from February to June). PS2: 2,080,025 JANUARY: 593,696 FEBRUARY: 277,572 MARCH: 410,151 APRIL: 276,938 MAY: 260,255 JUNE: 261,413 GBA: 1,295,067 JANUARY: 475,310 FEBRUARY: 152,858 MARCH: 185,937 APRIL: 155,662 MAY: 158,821 JUNE: 166,479 GAMECUBE: 478,202 JANUARY: 214,476 FEBRUARY: 59,033 MARCH: 89,736 APRIL: 42,233 MAY: 31,491 JUNE: 41,233 PSOne: 158,154 JANUARY: 51,011 FEBRUARY: 19,181 MARCH: 26,430 APRIL: 16,724 MAY: 20,908 JUNE: 23,900 Xbox: 236,372 FEBRUARY: 123,929 MARCH: 66,163 APRIL: 14,118 MAY: 12,479 JUNE: 19,683 WONDERSWAN: 72,272 JANUARY: 25,922 FEBRUARY: 10,552 MARCH: 12,102 APRIL: 8,122 MAY: 6,049 JUNE: 9,525 If you could see the graphs that are presented in the magazine (we are far too lazy to make our own graphs), you would see that all platforms sold incredibly well in the first month of the year then slid downward, with the PS2 seeing somewhat of a jump in March (probably due to a string of high profile releases). Of course, with Mario Sunshine for the GameCube and the new colors for the PS2, both these systems should be seeing huge upswings right about now. Well, there you have it, Famitsu's sales report for the first half of the year. Oh yeah... that's right, we promised to post the top 100 sales charts. Note that some of the titles (as marked) were released prior to the start of 2002. The total sales figures are just for the period from 1/2002 up to and including 6/2002 (so Pokemon Crystal, seeing as how it was released in 2000 and still managed to make it into this top 100 chart, has obviously sold a lot of copies). 1. World Soccer Winning Eleven 6 - Konami, PS2, 4/25: 975,605 2. Onimusha 2 - Capcom, PS2, 3/7: 963,529 3. Kingdom Hearts - Square, PS2, 3/28: 787,513 4. Everything else, two (pieces?) of 64 MB RAM (no idea what kind, all I know is that I'm told is it won't work in my new PC, and since I'm getting 512 MB of Dance Dance Revolution (DDR) SDRAM I don't need the current RAM I have), a 16 or 32 MB Voodoo 3 Card (god, one thing that's ticking me off is that I can't locate the box for my Voodoo 3, which is bothersome since all my X-Men cards from the early 1990s are in it and I don't know how to store the Voodoo 3 card or even what kind it is exactly), a 40x CD-ROM, the internal AC Adapter, the mouse (standard PS/2 Wheel Mouse), what's left of the keyboard (went ape shift on it when the PC died), the burnt out non-spinning Hard Drive (that's what really died), the motherboard (of course, maybe somebody will want an AMD K6-2 475 MHz chip and board?), and that's about it. Oh, and the tower case thing, the one with all the Hello Kitty stickers on it. ;-) I'm keeping the Printer (Compaq IJ 300 - like anybody would really want that anyway), the Pacific Digital CD-RW, the monitor I've had since the 486 (I'm thinking VGA Box if I can find one), and that's it, I guess. Nobody I contacted wants the Voodoo 3 card, and it's of no use to me. I may be able to sell everything else to a repair shop, who knows. Yeah, so if you want the Voodoo 3 card, send me an e-mail or something, I'm still trying to find the box for it, but I'm sure something could be arranged. (As you may know, I'm not rolling in money, so if the shipping costs are high (like more than $5 USD) then I would need some assitance in shipping costs.... but fear not, you can have the Voodoo 3 card for basically free of charge) ** Dave ** TreyTable@msn.com (insert money here) ;-) _________________________________________________________________ Chat with friends online, try MSN Messenger: http://messenger.msn.com [ To quit the NGamers mailing list, send the message "unsubscribe ] [ NGamers" (without the quotes) to majordomo@xmission.com ] ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: "Dexter S." EverQuest has its Japanese addicts but the ratio of players to population is very low compared to the US as well as European countries. So, it doesn't surprise me one bit that the numbers are so low. It doesn't make FFXI a bad game. Unless you are a crowd follower, that is... I'm personally looking forward to the game. I wont buy it at launch unless I hear something very assuring that it's good. So far, I've played EverQuest, Dark Ages of Camelot, Anarchy Online and Asheron's Call... all PC MMORPGs (and btw, PSO is not a MMORPG and should never be compared to either of those four or FFXI) and I only really enjoyed EQ even though I can't really name any horrible flaws in the others. All are quality games, but only one suited my interests enough to keep me going. MMORPGs are still in their infancy. Square is due credit for trying with FFXI. It was an awesome road trip with some gambeling in Las Vegas, bridge- crossing in San Francisco, sightseeing in San Diego and a lot of cheap stuff in Mexico. About 2,500 miles in 2 weeks.. I guess I need some rest now :-) Anyway, after arriving here I got my copy of Final Fantasy X and I'm very looking forward for the RE remake in three weeks. So I only gotta get the Gamecube.
