For the last years you can find Alex and friends mixing the records for a few months after they finished a tour. And suddenly there's a new album. Yeah, I agree...the Orb could do something fantastic with that approach, and it would sound like nothing else out there. It's all the warped effects...that's what sends them over the top. They have their own studio, of course, so I dunno why they'd need to work someplace else.... Also, LX and the crew have done quite a bit of collaborating/remixing of late (witness the "Davy Jones' Locker" track on the upcoming System 7 LP), so I'd say they definitely haven't dropped off the planet. It's difficult to find out why they do it in the Island studio's because they have their own studio. As I read in the papers they were demoing new material, maybe it's the difference between working on it and demoing it. All I want is that fourth album soon to arrive and more, I want them to get on that stunning tour again. I've seen The Orb live for four times and all I can say that that's not enough. Please guys bring me more of that live stuff. BTW is their anybody on this list who've seen them perform on that commercial Woodstock II fest? And does anybody have a recording of this performance. I have a bootleg with have a registration on it. It's from a radioshow and you can hear the DJ for two times. The most stunning experience came when I saw them gave a special club performance at the Fuse in Brussel (Belgium) at the closing of their Happy Happy tour at the end of last year. I think about 300 people went crazy with some heavy beats, strange noises and beautiful sounds. Very different to their regular Happy Happy tour wich I visit a couple of week before at a "normal" venue. The guys were freaking and make it a very very special event! The owner of that club know the Orb personally so he got them do that very special event. And I was a happy person experiencing this one of a lifetime. Is there someone out there (sounds like X-Files to me) who had the same experience? And as we talk about live recordings. I'm very interested in it. The Orb live is an experience and not as they made that Orb live 93. I know there are people who hate the word bootleg. But for me it's the real Orb. I've got some very fine live recordings (almost all of them were recorded in the Uk after their huge popularity after UFOrb and their performances at Glastonbury in 1992 and 1993, wich I've both on CD. And all I can say is that Live 93 sucks when you've given this live recordings a listen. Love to see a reaction. What really turned me off to that > album was the bad rapping....but that's another post :) I've heard this sort of sentiment before...seems that the Hillage guitar sound it a pivotal thing when it comes to liking or dissing System 7. For me, the sound that makes Orb tracks like "Blue Room" soar is that trademark Hillage gliss guitar sound, the same sound that makes System 7 tracks like "Altitude" (brilliantly done with help from Derrick May) and "Alpha Wave" faves of mine. As for the vocal bits on the first album, most folks seem to agree that the LP would've worked much better without 'em. I always skip these, and think of the disc as more of an EP or mini-LP. Intrumental tracks like "Depth Disco" and "Listen" are among the best bits of programming I've ever heard. Truly brilliant stuff.... BTW, ob Live Orb: Though I haven't heard it, the _Dipping into the Cyberworld_ bootleg is supposed to be quite good, with at least part of the material coming from that 'ravestock' thing at the 2nd Woodstock.... I have tried the usual suspects for the bootleg, but with no luck. Anyone know of an online store that has this in stock? Or perhaps I kind soul is willing to puchase this for me at their local store? I would prefer a CD, but I wouldn't mind trading for a tape copy of it. I have just about every studio material done by the Orb. I also have a pretty decent collection of the Orb remixing other artists (both Japnese CDs with YMO, Front 242, KLF, Depche Mode, Pardise X, Big Audio Dynamite, Erasure, Harumoi Hosono, System 7, Meat Beat Manifesto (remixed by Kris). Also have Anthology II bootleg, Ultra Rare Trax (as well as KLF URT), and Europe 1992 live bootleg - all on CD. And a bunch of other things that I'm forgetting right now. Also while I have your ear, does anyone know where I could get Patterns & Textures? This is the biggest hole in my Orb collection. I understand this is way out of print. I would really love a copy - even a bootleg. I could give a few goodies for the kind soul who dubs this for me: Front 242 Rhythm of Time 12" (with Orb Remix) AND [Orignal Pressing] Perpetual Dawn 12" (American) with 4 remixes and Star 6 & 7 8 9 (Phase II). I've heard a couple of tracks on the radio, one's smart, one's alright. It's sort of slow jazzy techno, unless my memory is letting me down. * They also mention Orb news: the new Orb album should be due for release in August/September (I'm still hopiing for May myself, as NME reported last week, they're working with Thomas Felmnham); Volume magazine are putting together a 2/3 disc package of all the Orb's remixes (hurrah!) and it's sort of suggested this is because of all the bootlegs going about; and lastly, there should be another John Peel session in April. oo -\/- Vince + "I bleed sugar and smoke ice-cream." ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Michael Hauben Subject: Recommendations on ROIOs? I'm relatively new to the list so, hello . Has anybody noticed the following? On "Mut@ge.Mix@ge", track 10 is listed as; Rhythm of Time (victor the cleaner mix by the Orb) However, the track time is 6:12. The time of this mix on the original release is 7:46 (on the sleeve), 7:36 (according to my CD player), but fades out at 7:26 in reality. Comparing the two, it seems that they have just chopped roughly half a minute off the start of the mix, and faded out the track during the (Islamic call to prayer?) vocals, which finish around 6:35 on the original... Does anyone have any idea _why_ this has happened? However this word seems far > over my 10 english word vocabulary ;-) Could someone tell me what is a slinky ? Well, a slinky was/is a toy spring tightly coiled so as to make a tube, only not all that tightly that you can't easily stretch it out. You could put the slinky on one step of a set of stairs, pull the top end of the spring up and then down onto the next step below (so the tube looks like a macaroni noodle), and let go: the bottom end of the spring (on the upper step) would "follow" the end on the step below, pass over it, and go on to the next step below that. This would continue until you ran out of stairs. In this way the spring could "walk" down stairs. ;-) Anyway, Ob Orb sounds: I've been interested in getting the kinds of cymbal- like sounds heard in "Blue Room" and "Plateau" (a little like backwards cymbal samples, but not really). After messing about with reversing a bunch of normal cymbal samples in a sampler, I decided to try something different: I sampled the sound made by scraping together two steak knives at various speeds and, voila` -- Orb percussion (well, pretty close, anyway). I think their use of sampled water sounds ("Blue Room," "Lucky Saddle") is pretty cool as well. Check Alex's comment in the Warp Records _Artificial Intelligence_ comp: Warp: "Electronic Music...where next?" LX: "Natural sounds used as rhythm sections and various other water noises too!" orb be in u, orb be out u Neil Hetrick nh6957@wcuvax1.wcu.edu ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: orbico@globalxs.nl (Nico Baars) Subject: Re: That Noise Date: 24 Feb 1996 11:19:04 +0100 > yes, i do. i've seen it at a party...it's called a ZOOP TUBE. weird >reverbed metallic sounding tube with a hole to speak into so you can get >star wars warp space sound effect. > >whovuh > Is this the same thing as System 7 used on Civilization, the track on Power of Seven with Carl Craig?
