The Tie-Dyed Side of the Force ------------------------------ From: dmotut@robson.jumppoint.com Date: Wed, 26 Jun 1996 13:02:06 -0700 Subject: Jimmy Cauty - and his neighbors? The always amusing JIMMY CAUTY, formerly with the successful British pop-technoensemble KLF, is facing claims for damages after his experiments with a "sonic weapon" at his country home went awry. The ever-getting-weirder Cauty, who has also made a name for himself by wearing antlers on his head during performances and publicly burning one million pounds (the equivalent of $1.5 million) in cash, is now facing claims filed by angered farmers whose nearby herds of cattle reacted to the low-frequency noise by stampeding, and another farmer who blames the sonic disturbance for causing the death of a heifer and her calf during the birthing. For reasons unknown to those of us who haven't experimented heavily with psychedelics, Cauty "test-fired" a 25,000 watt sound system that he had installed on the back of a Saracen armored car at his country house near Broadhempstone, Devon, England, during a party. A local farmer describes the subsequent events saying, "When the noise started it was a low howl like an aircraft about to crash, but then it stopped and when it started again it sounded more like a didgeridoo." Meanwhile, police received dozens of calls complaining about Cauty's experiment and they eventually traced the night "howl" to his home where a group of friends had gathered. The techno shaman says, "I found two old surplus Saracens with some of the secret sound equipment still attached. Then, I rebuilt it all with information I found on the Internet. I did not intend to do any harm, and aimed the weapon away from homes and in the direction of a nearby radio mast. It had no effect on sheep and I did not realize that it would disturb the cattle. I was just demonstrating it because it is such an awesome piece of equipment and we are not sure of what it can do. The sound tests only lasted about 45 minutes, and I won't be doing them around here again." Apparently, Cauty spent only $3,000 on purchasing the two armored cars, but he has since spent tens of thousands on installing massive amplifiers and speakers which can cope with very low sound frequencies. Meanwhile, his neighbors are really pissed off and Cauty refuses to divulge why his current interests include buying armored cars and playing sonic war games. Hello everybody it's been a while since I wrote so I thought I'd tell you about the time (about two or three years ago methinks) The Orb played in Dublin, It was troubled by the fact that alot of people had been misinformed that it was a rave and were on the wrong chemicals if you know what I mean, so when the Orb came on, there was shouts like "get on with it !" as you might imagine. They played for about two and a half hours and it was fantastic, over two million quids worth of lighting effects so I was informed afterwards (which include two fantastic "Orbs" hanging out of the ceiling flashing different colours. The only problem on the night was that the lights, sound and other influences conspired to giving my friend a "panic attack" no shit !!!! Which just goes to prove just how captivating they actually are !!! Can't wait to see them again in Dublin hopefully soon. OK, we've been on an Orbital tangent lately, so I decided to give my final comments. I saw them last night and it was absolutely incredible! Started off with Dreamtime, Lush was in there somewhere, a buttkicking version of Satan. Came back in the encore and played the complete Impact USA (the earth is burning diversion), and the Halcyon spoken of earlier (the one mixed with "Heaven is a Place on Earth"), and a few that I didn't recognize that shook the hell out of the place. All in all, if you have a chance to see them, do! Vapour Space, the opening act was ok. Not too bad for a loop guru. If it wasn't for the light show, he would have sucked mightily. Not because the music was bad, but because he just sat in a corner and flipped switches. Not very entertaining at a concert. Heavy Cabaret Voltaire influence, I thought. One piece even reminded me of "Bolero". So when is Orb touring? I keep hearing rumours from you guys. What's up? When are they going to be in Oregon? I would like to disagree. I think that this album is very much worth the price, even though I got it for $30. The Orb remix of Supernova is just great. And there are other songs that are very good, too. Such as Orbital, Underworld, PWEI, Cabaret Volataire, and not to mention Node. I have been trying to track down any Node albums here in BC, Canada, but haven't had too much luck. Found a single or two, but that is it. I would highly recommend this comp. just due to the fact that a lot of it is fukn awesome. And the Moby remix rules. My opinion, thanks for coming out....
