Liking any of the original tracks here is not necessary, with one or two possible exceptions (read below). If you are new to The Orb, then liking Banco De Gaia, Leftfield, Pink Floyd or FSOL may be a good sign for liking this album. Then again, it may not. (This is all IMHO by the way) TITLE: AUNTIE AUBREY'S EXCURSIONS BEYOND THE CALL OF DUTY - THE ORB REMIX PROJECT RELEASED BY: DEVIANT RECORDS (e-mail deviant@volume.demon.co.uk) CAT NO: DVNT12CD (for the CD) TRACK LIST: CD1 Material - Praying Mantra 17.05 Killing Zoe - Democracy (The Russian Tundra Mix) 17.52 Keiichi Suzuki - Satellite Serenade (Trans Asian Express Mix) 13.10 Zodiac Youth - Fast Forward The Future (Bucket and Bong Mix) 7.18 Primal Scream - Higher Than the Sun (Higher Than the Kite Mix) 8.46 Ready Made - Ambient State 0.49 Wir - So And Slow It Grows (The Orb in Atlas Mix) 6.57 Yasuaki Shimizu - Secret Squirrel 7.47 CD2 Yello - You Gotta Say Yes To Another Excess (Orb Extended Remix) 12.58 Innersphere - Out of Body (Logical Mix) 4.25 Depeche Mode - Happiest Girl (Orbital Mix) 7.38 Erasure - Ship of Fools (Orbital Southsea Isles of Holy Beats Mix) 8.52 Sun Electric - O'Locco (Orbital Therapy Part 1) 6.05 Maurizio - Ploy (Battersea Was An Island Of Mud Mix) 12.38 Time Unlimited - Men Of Wadodem (Orbital Mix) 4.20 Paradise X - 2 Much (Start And Depart From Paradise Mix) 6.35 Pop Will Eat Itself - Home (Home Sweet Home Orb Remix) 11.13 Love Kittens - What Goes On (Orbient Mix) 5.15 With this album comes a small booklet. Within, this booklet is a glossy layout. There are the usual logos, quotes, discography and promo article. Reading through it, I find a rather cynical feeling on the `chill out' scene. But it is very thoughtful and interesting. The discography is very descriptive. The quotes are amusing. And the article is informative. Normally I'm put off by little booklets and other silly novelties coming with albums. The Trance Europe Express compilations had one or two good books about the artists, but by Volume 4 they degraded into fashionable teenage bollox. The X-Mix compilations had a set of DJ cards for Volume 5, and a techno quiz for part 6. Bubble gum and stickers next, I'm sure. The little Orb book is nice. Don't be put off by it. The tracks are mixed together with a little extra production by the Orb. This makes it a good solid piece of work, so, although it is a compilation, it retains a certain homogeneity. The first CD offers a great deal of pleasure. The Material track is quite lively; it's very FSOL towards the beginning. Many smooth samples and whispy sounds. It progresses nicely becoming a little tribal (Air 2 style). Democracy is very spacey and quirky, a bit like Daniel Pemberton meets Orbus Terrarum. By the time Satellite Serenade begins, the listener(s) is well chilled. This track is just beautiful. Suddenly, one is reminded of the days of Ultraworld. I'm also reminded of FSOL's track Ill-Flower on Lifeforms. Yes, yes, the Orb are still number one! A lovely beat kicks in later on. Very Ultraworld. Fast Forward The Future is even better. Fuck me, how I've missed this stuff. This one is like Magestic on UFOrb. Higher Than The Sun is very effective. Very Leftfield. The Orb do a magnificant job remixing this one. Lovely track, lovely track. So psycadelic. So help me, the vocals are even good (they play a small part, anyway). The synth and rhythm work is juicy. Ambient State is a short and sweet interlude - a smooth 808-State (Pacific State) type synth, complete with Dolphins and birds. The Wir track is very nice. This is another rock/indie track that is completely Ultraworld-ized. Secret Squirrel is a complete wind down, just the thing to cap off the tracks before. Very chilled and smooth. What a great disc CD1 is. From Satellite Serenade onwards is the best part of the album. The second CD start off with a Yello remix. Bits and pieces of conversation, coupled with animal sounds and other whispy noises, open this track. This is a typical interlude - waiting to build to something. Slowly but surely it does form into a rhythmic trip. Fairly slick and energetic. A bit varied from the previous disc. Out Of Body is weird and abstract, like Pomme Fritz, and smooth, like Obus Terrarum. Happiest Girl is quite fruity at first, but liking Depeche Mode vocals may be an advantage. Yet another rock/pop track is orbified. It has a nice Orb-techno feel. Ship Of Fools starts off with a slick techno sound. The Erasure vocals crop up later on. Nice tribal-ish, Ultraworld rhythm. O'Locco is very clubby. A slow trancey track, with a dubby feel. Ploy is chillier. Nice feel to this track. This is reminisent of Plateau or Valley on Orbus Terrarum. There are fast soft beats later on, though. Men Of Wadodem is another orbified rock outing. Not very spacey, more bassy. 2 Much is chilled out. Birds and seashore sounds. A jazzy piano jams away. Vocals from the original track are messed with. Nice rhythm accompanies the piano. Good track! Home is a reggae track - like a toned down off-beat version of Perpetual Dawn. What Goes On is rock/guitar type of crap - the Orb do enough to signal their presence. It's a little spacey in parts. Not great though. That ends the album off. The album is varied; it has Orb techno, astract musaks, smooth ambience. Only in the second disc does the listener feel less spaced out, and more down to Earth. The whole album is very nice, and is just brilliant in places - i.e. the first disc. Once or twice, though, a track may not be interesting enough. This is only due to the original input of the tracks. Having said that, this is very much an Orb creation. It should be in your Orb collection right beside their original stuff. These guys can take a track, suck it right into their little world, chew it up, and spit it back out at you. In the little booklet, one gets the impression that Dr. Alex is bemused by the `ultraworld' chill out scene that he feels has come and gone. He feels it's time to come back down to Earth (cue Orbus Terrarum) and explore new avenues. In that respect, this album is a taste of paradise lost. djdan "Marijuana is Mother Natures way of saying 'High!'." ;-)---~ # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Email majordomo@xmission.com with "info orb" in the message. ------------------------------ From: Darius Telycenas Date: Thu, 8 Aug 1996 21:56:13 +0300 Subject: Re: Spanish Castles in Space >> Huge Debate here right now - what language is that?????? > >According to some texts on 'ultraworld', it's from a russian radio >program regarding fishes.
