The other day i unearthed a lost classic in my Orb-related collection also on the short-lived AO label: Saxophonettes Secret Squirrel ep. The main track on the Secret Squirrel ep also appeared on New Electronica's 'Global Technological Innovations - Unreleased 1' compilation back in '94 under the name The Geep (Goddess of My Soul Mix) and is supposedly an Orb remix of a Haruomi Hosono's Laughter Meditation. Now since secret squirrel is a remix of a Haruomi Hosono track, what do the Saxophonettes have to do with the project or was this ep just another attempt to hide the orb's involvement during his legal troubles with Big Life in the early 90s? Anyways, The Saxophonettes: Secret Squirrel ep is a great murky electro-dub ep worked over by the Orb. After listening to it several times i decided to see if the Saxophonettes/Yasu Shimizu have released anything else. I've since read that they've released a ton of stuff dating back 1978 ranging in styles from orchestrated soundtrack material to kenny g-ish sax music, to some interesting ethno-electronica but i've not heard any of those other releases. Does anybody have any suggestions for Saxophonettes/Yasu Shimizu material that sounds like the Secret Squirrel ep? - -- - -->-Lance---- PO Box 450715 Westlake, OH 44145 United States # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info orb" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email orb@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 5 Aug 2001 19:02:55 -0600 From: "bi11i" Subject: RE: (orb) bob's I ordered mine the first day they were available and haven't gottem them yet. Technically, you would definitely be violating copyright if you distributed it...but in the US at least, you can certainly convert formats for personal/archival use. In terms of likelihood, I'm more inclined to believe that these will never be repressed than to believe that they only press *exactly* the number for which they receive orders. Seemed like 105 degree's when we got out of the car. Hydrated up before the walk in and after purchasing some water headed for the Focus tent. These festivals don't make it easy for fans of a group to meet up. Didn't catch up with anyone that I knew from the list. I managed to find a nice spot center stage around 15 feet back with enough room to dance. The tent was air conditioned which really worked out well. Jason Bentley (local hero) was just finishing up & Timo Maas went on. So looking at the internet schedule I had figured we were 30 minutes ahead. Timo played a good two hours and the Orb hit the stage a 7 sharpe. (Timo closed with the PIL number going into LX first song. After a couple of tracks they went into their first song Little Fluffy Clouds. Also heard Blue Room, Perpetual Dawn, Outlands, Mile Long Lump of Lard, EDM (had some technical difficulties there but finally got it going) and Thursdays Keeper. I also wrote down Turn It Down, but wasn't 100% sure. I think there were probably two more (someone?) Heard the Doors "The End" that they were using at the beginning on the earlier tour, this time in the middle. A bunch of other odds and ends were thrown in along the way. Time passed quickly and they were off at 8:10 after a good 1:10 set. I had been dancing for about 3 1/2 hours by this time and felt it was time for a food break. Went back and caught some of Oakey, not too bad, better than I've seen him before, but the tent was packed now and there was no use trying to jam in down close. Plus by this time the heat from earlier had taken it's toll and I needed to sit. So rather than see Juan Atkins I sat it out with my friend watching Moby. Will have to catch Juan another time. Feel into bed at 2:40 am and having a couple of days off. Well, have to go, DJ ix is on his way from San Diego and were off to see Roxy Music tonight. Hello, I'm new to the list. My name is drain and I'd like to take this opportunity to send a warm greeting to everyone reading right now. On to my question/comment: Was that a new orb song they played at area:one shoreline (SF)? The track I'm referring to was performed late in the set -- I think it was the next to last song (after Assassin?). I instantly recognized the beat -- it was taken from "kick it" (TINO CORP) but layered with it were these really insane slow nasty resonant sweeps. Strangely melodic, really simple and beautiful and it took me by complete surprise -- I was not expecting them to play anything out of the ordinary (assassin surprised me too). The only other "element" from the song that I recognized was the vocal bit from Outlands live '93 (but it was only going for a few measures). Did anyone else catch this or was it me hallucinating again? If this is new orb stuff, we have a lot to look forward to! I'm not impressed with the packaging. it's a stiff brown card mailer with no padding and no airspace, and the records are not wrapped in plastic or anything. With the package in my hands, I do see some clues as to why those who ordered multiple sets of Bobs aren't getting them, 1) There is nothing in the quantity field, so whoever packed the order would have had to look at the total cost and the unit cost to know how many to send. There is no indication on the invoice that anything remains to be shipped. 2) There is a 750g limit to 2nd class post, and Bob1-3 set weighs about 725g. Even though the shipping method on my invoice says "First Class Post" and I paid 13.00 GBP for shipping, the value of the stamps on my package is 1.74 GBP, which is exactly the price of 2nd class postage for up to 750g. So, another package might arrive tomorrow, but.... again, there is no indication on the invoice that anything remains to be shipped. I really hate having to complain about this, but this is just not proper. I hope they own up to the mistakes and correct them. As far as I can tell, I've been cheated out of 23.23 for the mp3 subscription, 12.75 for the set of Bobs that haven't arrived, 11.00 for shipping and 8.22 VAT.... I cannot afford to throw away 55 quid! I tried to ring the phone number on the invoice, but it doesn't seem to be connected. I started the cd when the plane took off, and it finished just as I landed. Well I ordered 4 records from Badorb, and recieved 3 as well as the authenticity papers ( i ordered an xtra bob3 and didn't get it) and I also recieved my t-shirt of bob3. And to my surprise, I was able to locate and purchase the Anethesia - Dirty Kiss promo 12" with the 23 min Orb mix!! as well as a whole pile of progressive house promo's. Someone mentioned Badorb record bags with the logo, that would be an awesome idea. Has anyone suggested this to Garphoo yet? cheers - -Chris # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info orb" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email orb@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 7 Aug 2001 14:38:30 -0400 (EDT) From: "Benjamin L. May" Subject: (orb) somewhat OT turntable question Hey guys, I'm finally getting around to metering the BPM counts of all my records. A boring task to say the least, but it will also be very helpful for mixing once I'm done. But anyways, I've had these 1200's for over a year now and I never quite figured out something that was bothering me. The pitch slider tells you changes in PITCH, not in meter, although what everyone does when the use the pitch control is control the meter (speed/BPM) of the song... So I need to know if there's some nice transform like: f(y,z) = q Where y = the BPM of the song when the pitch slider is at zero and where z = the current position of the slider relative to the zero position and q = the actual BPM of the song after pitch adjustment. Anyone know how to do this? :) # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info orb" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email orb@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. ------------------------------ End of orb-digest V2 #497 *************************
