What are/were the 3 commercially released tracks?
Hey those uploads sound GREAT! Too bad the traffic died down on the server
(for uploads at least, not sure how many people download). I put all I got
on there (not a lot) but I guess I can put up the John Peel thing (I forgot
if it's there) and Worcester, Massachusets (even tho it totally sucks).

As the are a few experts on the list with regards to making / mixing music
etc. Can anyone tell me if there is software available to allow you to
sample and produce your own beats etc on the PC? And make a recommendation?
I cant afford to go spending a fortune on machines but would love to be able
to have a go on the PC. Going by the remix competition on Loopz, some of you
are pretty clued up!
Any advice greatly appreciated.

Subject: (orbital) Three Questions: Seattle Train Station, US Tour, and Homelands
Date: 02 Feb 2001 15:09:05 -0800
Hey All,
I apologize in advance if these are FAQ's...I'm new to this list and
can't
seem to find a FAQ list for this group, so here goes:
I've run across lots of links for the Seattle Train Station web
recording.
The site that lives on no longer has the music, though, just some
peripheral
links. Is there somewhere else this is available. It was through a web
recording (House of Blues New Orleans, also no longer available to
non-Windows/Mac machines) that I first understood how truly
transcendently
great Orbital are. So if anyone has any pointers...
Also, are there any announced plans for a US tour? They haven't toured
here
in the last three years, and that has (unfortunately coincidentally)
been the
period of time I have been heavily into them. I've seen live videos,
live
music, bought all the records, but I still haven't seen them. If it
seems
they'll not be coming to the US this year I am considering going to...
The homelands festival in may. Anyone have any feedback as to whether
that'd
be an interesting show, from past experience? I'd love to see P & P
Hartnoll,
and the Orb as well, but if Orbital are going to play only a 45 minute
set,
since I saw Alex Paterson recently, I could just save my $1000. But if
it has
been a great festival in the past, I may as well do it. Any input would
be
greatly appreciated. Peace,
James

Actually, Orbital HAVE toured the US within the last three years. I saw
them the summer before last at the Community Service Tour with Crystal
Method in support of the MoN album. FANTASTIC show. Loved it. Im
considering going to homelands too but I know some think its cheesy or
wahtever. Im interested in Orbital and Bent, if anybody as any info please
let us know!!!
I DID go to the homelands site, its not down, but it just doesnt work.
There are no links and just broken images.

This doesn't seem to work anymore but a copy of it in mp3 format is
on the ftp site... too bad I couldn't get the real audio file that
would have been much smaller (and better quality too).

I have been making music on my pc for over 5 years now, and the best program
that I have discovered so far is Dream Station. It is incredible. It is a
full synthesizer that allows you to totally alter the sound of your samples
or sine waves with such things as LFO filters, oscilators, etc. Also, it
has an efffect send on the mixer that allows you to use the effects that are
in the program such as Flange, Reverb, Delay, etc. It also has a full multi
tracker. It is absolutely incredible. However, you have to have a good pc.
A lot of my friends pc's won't run it. It also, costs $100 US, but if you
are interested, I can send it to you for free.
well, hope that helps.

Hello
In terms of this recording, I remember listening to it many years back. In
fact, it was on e of the first Orbital shows that I heard live. As far as
quality goes, the .RA file (yah, they were .RA and not .RAM files back then)
wasn't that great of quality. It sounded much like the version of San
Francisco 93 that is on the Orbital web site. The MP3 copy that is on the
server is much better sounding.
And just to add my 2 cents, Orbital - Live from the Seattle Train Station is
one of the best setlist from Orbital. It is from the In Sides era and not
only features Choice, but also the full version of the Box. Don't miss out,
download today.
Cheers

During the show, the sequencer actually crashed during Forever. The last few
seconds when all you hear is the flat tone is the sequencer locking up. They
had to reset during their show (I believe). At the end of the last track,
you can hear Orbital apologize to the crowd for the breakdown.
That set is complete

It's due out on the 19 of March, and has a mix by Plump DJs
(among others, I hope). Allegedly the album's now due out on the 26th of
March, according to Ministry. They also say there'll be a DVD of the album
at some point and that their live show will be 'revolutionary'. No change

troubleshot
a minor issue with one of the orbiter's "multiplexer-demultiplexers"

So anybody have an idea what "multiplexer-demultiplexers" are?
I figure it's some sort of astronaut synthesizer.
I think it would make a great group name, if anybody's looking >8^)

I hate to tell you how un-prosaic it really is... A mux is a device that
"routes" data, say from one line or bus onto one of 4 selected lines. (A
1x4 mux) A demux takes data off of one of 4 lines and transmits it onto
one bus (a 4x1 demux). Not unlike what goes on inside a patchbay.
Though- calling a band Mux-demux does have a ring to it...

I'm sure Scott knows a lot more about this than I do, but I'll try to
explain it in "laymen's" terms = ). A multiplexer is an integrated chip
(read: piece of electronics) that reads in a number of bits (a bit can
be 1 or 0), and determines what the output should be based on some
stuff. So a 1x4 multiplexer reads in one bit and outputs 4. There are
many different kinds (such as 2x8, blah, blah). A demultiplexer does
the opposite, so it takes in a number of bits and spits out 1 or 2 of
them, etc. At least this is what I learnt in my assembly programming

then Shannon can tell us about some more cool chemistry stuff (I still
remember that thread about people glowing).

Well, I worked at Corning Inc, and Multiplex/Demultiplex (or Mux/Demux) is
used. With Corning, it was used with fiber optics. We made these little
filters that only allowed certain frequencies through them. For example, if
you had a fiberoptic strand, there would be filters located on both ends,
allowing 16, 32, 64, or 128 "channels" to get through. You'd send them
through on one end with a laser (Mux), and at the other end, the different
filters would filter them into the 16, 32, 64, or 128 channels, (Demux) on
the other end. This allows up to 128 channels out of a single fiberoptic
strand. This is hot technology right now. Also, I know other companies like
JDS Uniphase and such have been working with the space program to apply
similar technologies in space. I assume this is what they're talking about.
It's certainly not an astronaut synthesizer. (hahahaha! That'd be nice
though!) It's probably a way that they use lasers in space to power
different mechanisms, since "normal" functions that we do here under our
gravity/conditions isn't the same. Here's a pasting from the site:
"Our past is filled with examples of innovation and high volume production.
Products primarily used for defense and space application, had to meet
severe environmental and cosmetic requirements for diverse climates and end
uses such as missile systems or weather and communication satellites.
Additionally, we provided infrared optics in volume for commercial
manufacturers of analytical instruments used to monitor elements in the
environmental, manufacturing and medical fields."
Do a simple search on yahoo or something for this, and you'll find a lot of
companies are doing it now. Two years ago it was totally unheard of.

Hope this helped :-)

No, you joined what used to be the best mailing list around. It sort of
died, and I'm not too sure why. I've been meaning to write this e-mail
for a while, and here goes. When I found this mailing list, I was just
really starting to get into Orbital. I had bought In Sides after seeing
the video for The Box on MTV's Amp. Everyone on the list was really
friendly, and I just had to buy all the Orbital cds I could get my hands
on.
Anyway, if it weren't for this group, I would have never heard of
Autechre, or Plaid, Boards of Canada, 2 Lone Swordsmen, Squarepusher,
Jega, u-ziq, Amon Tobin, Kid Koala, Cosmic Baby, BT, Fluke, I wouldn't
have any Underworld or Orbital bootlegs or any of the stuff people put
on my server. This list has been solely responsible for my musical
maturity, etc., and I am forever indebted. Not to mention the cool
people who used to post (some still do): Shannon, Digger, Aimee, Loopz,
Morpheus, Rob Schultz (whom I met), Trym, Deekay, Mehul, CDRich (sorry,
don't know your name), Majordomo (who is that guy? = ), benjib, AJ,
Philip, Josh, Kel, nub, Shaun, Kulsoom, Ender, Tasan, Iah Mahuron, Jon
Green, on + on! I can't help but get a huge smile when I read my
archived Orbital list e-mails. So much traffic, so many flames (Brenden
sure caused a stir, huh?). I think I've been getting e-mail on this
list for 4 years now!
A big part of this list was my ftp server, and I'm sorry it didn't
survive the transition from on-campus to off-campus housing. It took
forever to get DSL here, but UPS should be dropping off a router today,
along with a new 45GB hard disk, and with any luck, my ftp server will
be up and running today!! Now I'm not on campus, so the upload speed of
the dsl is probably gonna max at 18K or so (I know, it sucks). Still,
it's my server! I'll send out an e-mail about it when it's official,
but it should happen any day now, I'll be back in business. Since I'm
getting a new hard disk, I'll have my current one (9GB) dedicated to the
server, so no more problems when people are uploading 2.5GB of Oakenfold
= ). Anyway, I'm very excited. mmmmmmm

mr. sawaya - thank you for writing that post. i feel exactly the same. i
joined a bit before you - sniv era - and it was really a great list back
in the day. traffic has slowed to about a fifth of what it once was, for
whatever reason (we all have our opinions, i'm sure). :) but yeah, i
learned about many of the people you mention above through people on this
list. unfortunately i feel i have now sort of "graduated" to the idm list
in some sense, but probably more because people here just aren't as
forthcoming with reviews/recs and things as they used to be. therefore, i
highly encourage everyone here to talk more about the stuff they're
listening to, and not just orbital. i guess that's all i wanted to say on
that.

mouse on mars. they're an electronic outfit consisting of jan st werner
(is that right? i'm pulling it out of my ass...) and somebody else. i
don't have instrumentals, but i do have all of the lps (i think). my
favorite is autoditacker. i would recommend them to anybody who
appreciates a bit of of playfulness in their electronic music/idm. they
seem to walk a fine line between microsound, melody, house, and about a
million other genres and influences. quality stuff.

Wonder if he ever learned to use tact? :-)
Marc mentioned all of the great bands he learned about on this list. The
best way I know of to learn about new artists is to ask everyone what
their favorite (or favourite for those of you over in Orbital-land) bands
are. I compiled a list-members survey in the fall of 1998 and 1999 - was
a little busy last fall, but hey, it's not too late and it _is_ quiet.
Anyone up for a new survey? Send me your top 10 bands, _besides_ Orbital.
Post to the list or send directly to me. When the traffic dies down, I'll
compile a master list and post it. If you want to review the last two
surveys (and see if you contributed), check out the web site below.
Cheers,

life)

hmm top 10 bands besides Orbital eh? Well most of the bands on my list would
be non-techno although between Orbital and Underworld itcomprises most of my
listening time hehe..... but here goes:
10)Freaky Chakra
9)Prodigy
8)Creed
7)C.J. Bolland
6)Pink Floyd
5)Metallica (old stuff)
4)Fear Factory
3)Staind
2)Future Sound of London
and #1 besides Orbital.... Underworld
there you have it...... mainly electronic or metal...... Floyd and perhaps
Creed being the only exceptions.
I wonder if I am in the extreme minority with a list half populated by metal
and the like hehe

assuming it's the same sample as the one from the
London Arena 00-01, i'd like to know also. the
one with the guy talking about satan in his satanic
majesty and stuff? hell yeah. now, i'm not saying
that it's an overly scary song or that i'm too easily
scared, but the songs never been that creepy since i
saw it live. combined with the visuals and

out. it's awesome. but yeah i'm rambling now.
on a side note, i realize that they aren't brand new,
but i picked up two records the other day: Bola-

alderandelius-kingofpop. quite good stuff. i

I actually asked Paul Hartnoll what that sample was in a webchat thing
they did on dotmusic.com last year. Here's a transcription:
"Funky Dung from London asks: Where was that cool sample you played in the
middle of 'Satan' at Cream 2000 from? It made the tune even more
brilliantly evil than ever!
Paul : I did't think anyone else heard that, and I wouldn't tell you!"
Yeah, cheers Paul. :)

Hey All,
I can't pick my top 10 but I like all of the picks so far (except for
Aerosmith).
I have been listening to Arling & Cameron lately - two guys from Holland
who have got Sergio Mendes, John Barry, Air, and Fatboy Slim over for a
party and they are waiting for you to show up (the ladies are already there
too). John Barry is an influence of the Hartnoll brothers. I'm sure you all
can recall them opening their set with the "Moonraker Theme." If you like
cool/cheesy retro of all eras with humor and good production (Beck fans this
means you) get a hold of their stuff.
What is in YOUR audio playback device?
$.02,

I've been enjoying everyone's lists. Seems like I'll have to look at
Autechre again. I've found them sort of "clangy" in the past, but I'll
try again. As to my own list, it's very hard to do. Only 10? Current
or all time? Hmmm...both then....(Cheating, I know, but there you have
it...)
Current:
Orbital
William Orbit/Strange Cargo/Torch Song/etc. Pretty much anything WO
puts his hands on.
Massive Attack
Underworld
BT
Banco de Gaia
Kruder and Dorfmeister
Sasha and Digweed
The Beta Band
Bowery Electric
All time:
Bauhaus/Peter Murphy/Love and Rockets
Gary Numan (I can't help it. I'm quite old...)
The Specials
The Clash/Big Audio Dynamite
The Cure/The Glove. etc.
(Embarassingly) Adam and the Ants
X (i.e. of John Doe and Exene Cervenka)
Iggy Pop
Bowie (through say 84 and very occasionally thereafter)
The Smiths
James

1. Leftfield
2. The Chemical Brothers
3. Orbital (yes i know, not on, is it! They should be in 1st position, but i
thought that some of their earlier stuff wasn't as good as the two above)
4. Underworld
5. Groove Armada
6. Hybrid
7. Mauro Picotto
8. Faithless
9. St.Germain
10. Talvin Singh
After about position 5, it starts to get a lot harder....the list would be
changing every day depending on my mood (:

Dang, I love doing top ten lists so I must join in.
here is mine, you may be upset not to find orbital at the top anymore. MON
has almost made me loose interest, so I am praying that the new album will
reignite the flame.
1. Fila Brazillia
2. Boards of Canada
3. Tool
4. Luke Vibert/Wagon Christ/Plug
5. Autechre
6. Orbital
7. People Under the Stairs (who I saw last night and were totally amazing)
8. Nine Inch Nails
9. Radiohead
10. The Deftones
the end of the list could be different if I had more time to think about it,
but this is what I have been listening to the most lately. Underworld would
probably be number 11 though, or possibly trade spots with the deftones.
take care

Speaking of clanky, has anyone heard Ae's ep7.2? As much as I love Ae, that
disk is practically unlistenable. It sounds like they are going for the
rural sound by running over their synths with a tractor. I personally think
that they have pushed the limit too far. However, their new album, set to
release on April 19th, looks like it may be a little more conventional, that
is Ae conventional. Afterall, this one actually has a name and everything.
I really wish that they would make some more stuff like their their remixes
of the beast and slowly-on the loose. Those tracks are incredible.
However, I am expecting something totally new. Something that no one has
every done before, hopefully anyway. And BTW, does anyone know if Anti is
out of print? The warp website isn't selling it anymore, and I just found
that kind of odd. Also, is Pentamorous Metamorphisis by GC out of print as
well. I can't find it for sale any where, and a lot of stores used to carry
it.
oh well,
kevin eagerly awaiting the abundance of warp releases set for this year.

hey, i was wondering if some of you out there in
orbital land were familiar with some good breakbeat
stuff. i'm looking for stuff that is more melodic
than just full of tough bass lines, although some of
that's alright too. i'm mostly looking for stuff that
would sound good with trancey stuff, stuff like
Hybrid, or Aquasky vs. Masterblaster's '777.' i'm
under the impression that's how way out west and
tsunami one are, but i'm not sure, cause i've never
heard em. some of BT's more breakbeatish stuff is
good. example: the breakbeat type stuff in BT's
'Content' = good. BT's 'Love Peace and Grease' = bad.
(i like the song, but it's not what i'm looking for).
does that make sense? melodic breakbeats? i know
they exist, i have a couple of records. i'm just
looking for more.
thanks

..try Squarepusher! ;-D
I just listened to some of his stuff in the car (chin happy/the fat controller/vic acid), and this guy
is THE godfather of breakbeats.. Totally far out, a true inferno, it seems like the fag that
accidentially landed in the box of firecrackers! ;-D

I guess what YOU mean is what's currently referred to as "newskool/progressive breaks"!
Stuff like Hybrid... Check that one out then if that's what you mean! ;-D
It's alot like the Tsunami Orbital stuff and if you check out the Belfast - sasha vs the light mix,
you get an exact idea of what newskool breaks are! ;-D

Oooh, I didn't know about this one... something else to
look forward to. Actually, just checked the Warp site. They
have a name for it apparently :
"Autechre’s new 9 track album “Confield” has been
delivered. The release date is set for the 16th April.
Ae are now planning live dates for later this year."
- from http://www.warprecords.com/
(and btw, what a fantastic site that's become)
Btw, do you mean the "Peel Sessions 2" by "ep7.2"? The four
MP3s that were available from an AE-homepage finally made
it to disc, and it's really very much in tune with "lp5"
and "ep7" (the "clanky", distorted ones). Mostly, I let
Incunabula, Amber and the Garbage EP get most playtime.
Something feels wrong about the Tri Repetae album, just
can't get into it, although the Anvil Vapre EP is a beaut..
Autechre, autechre, autechre (come on, let's revive this
old dreaded thread...) :-)

Plump DJs are sometimes very good. Tracks like The Push, Scram, Big Groovy
Fucker, and so on. They're very big and bouncy, but have some great bleepy
tune bits.
Freq Nasty's good as well - I saw him do an AMAZING set of progressive
melodic breakbeat stuff last year.
Tsunami One are great, although they've only done a few things and I hear
their first album's been scrapped (they've split up, apparently). The
things they've done on their own (Kevin Beber or Adam Freeland) are
normally very cool - there's a Beber tune I can't remember the name of
which has a really nice Orbital-style second half.
Timo Maas has done some very trancey breakbeat stuff that's really very
good as well.
Slacker? Some of their breakbeat stuff's pretty tuneful.
Oh, and Waveform. They're nice, swooshy, chilled breakbeat. Did a very
good remix of Way Out West's Earth.

Can someone recommend some Autechre to me, then? I've heard some of their
stuff that I thought was fantastic, and saw them live at the Warp
Lighthouse thing last year where they were amazing to begin with (friend
said it was their older stuff) then they went completely mental and I had
to go rest my poor head.
I've only got one of their CDs, and it's ep7. A random buy that scared me
off getting any more of their stuff without a prior recommendation.

No, they just can't manage a whole album as they're nowhere near
each other (geographically, ironically enough). Freeland's working on a
solo album ATM, with some tracks co-produced by Andy Page.

01. Orbital (Undisputed)
02. Depeche Mode (What can I say? I love them.)
03. Morten Abel (Norwegian guy. His latest album is really good.)
04. Hans Zimmer (No, really!)
05. Hybrid (Their remixes in particular are incredible)
06. Future Sound of London (I prefer their singles to their albums)
07. Bola (He has some incredible stuff.. Pendulus is a favorite)
08. Radiohead (Not all that fond of their newest album, but OK Computer and
The Bends are really good).
09. Underworld (Prefer dubnobasswithmyheadman to Second Toughest in the
Infants, and Beucoup Fish inbetween there).
10. Boards of Canada (In A Beautiful Place Out In The Country is sooo
beautiful.)

If you don't think Squarepusher can be melodic, then check out Journey
to Reedham, and especially Port Rhombus off of Big Loada. Both
excellent songs, and Port Rhombus is extremely laidback/melodic and has
fast breakbeats at the same time. Good stuff.

Absolutely pick up their first release, Incunabula. That, along with In
Sides, are my two favourite albums on the planet. I could listen to it
straight through for eternity. Amber has some good material too, but I
much prefer Incunabula. Not very easy to pronounce though. I usually
say in-COON-a-BOOL-a, but it might be incu-NAB-yew-la. Who knows?

Me!
I say: In-cue-Nab-yew-LA! whic actually has something to do
with an ancient mystical codex of some sort. I think of fantastic
mythical creatures.
I brought this up about a year ago and somebody told me,
but the demntia has really been raging as of late, and I'm lucky
to remember my own name ;^)
I think In Coon a Boola is an old song from Yale University at the turn
of the century [1900 AD].
The chorus is "Boola-Boola, In Coon-a-Boola"

The second pronunciation is the correct one (in cooh NAB you la). Latin
for infancy, swaddling clothes, cradle. Approriate for the launch of
AE's stunning career. I hope the new album Confield [sic] marks a return
to the
earlier directions (rather than a rehash) scouted in Envane and the Tri
Repetae double cd.

autechre recommendations: like i said, i think amber is their most lovely,
incunabula (i pronounce it "inCOOnaBOOLa") has some nice moments, and tri
repetae 2cd w/ garbage and anvil vapre eps is the best bang for your buck.
anything post-chiastic slide (including cichlisuite, lp5, ep7) is going to
be less accessible, but some idm kids seem to love it. i must say that
"fold4wrap5" on lp5 is an amazing track.
somebody mentioned how fsol singles are better than their albums. i agree.
the cascade ep is my favorite - just excellent stuff, and maybe even
danceable!

it's in-kyu-NUH-byew-la ... a really old book.
and yes, it's by far my favorite autechre album too.
the basscad ep is definately good too. i love the
basscadub remix, though i'm rather disappointed
that it's not on the vinyl of the ep that i have.
otherwise, i'd also have to say that the garbage
and anvil vapre eps are good too. after those is when
the music starts taking a back seat to the
experimentation (for the most part...#2 on tri repetae
is beautiful to me, along with some stuff on lp5 like
rae).
anywho...enough rambling from me. i'm gonna go
listen to autechre now.

I find that EP7 grew on me after a while... I still think its their worst
release but I do like some of the tracks on it. But take my opinion with a
grain of salt, I tend to enjoy strange stuff... In any case if you don't
like EP7 try any think before LP5 (LP5 is somewhat of a mix between the EP7
randomness and their earlier stuff.) This includes : Amber, Anti, Tri
Repetae, Incunabula, Amber, Basscadet, Garbage, Anvil Vapre, mail order 12",
Keynell remix 12", ... you can't go wrong with any of those, really. and of
course the gescom stuff too, but that tends to be a bit heavier.
Anyway here's my non-orbital top ten of the moment (yes all electronic
artists)
1. Autechre/Gescom
2. Bola
3. Boards of Canada
4. Speedy J / Jochem Paap
4. Woob
5. L'usine
6. Dettinger (oasis was my top of 2000)
7. bauri
8. shuttle358
9. arovane
10. nate harrison / various toshoklabs aliases
some honorable mentions : monolake, brinkmann, metamatics, t-power,
kandis/senking/jens massel, farben/jan jenilek, phonem, dntel... ok I better
stop :-)

Ermm... Why is it, that on EVERY single Mailinglist around, the EXACT SAME discussions
repeat in a cycle of say 1 year? <:-)
Do we really have that much "fluctuation"?
..i think i read the very sentence "EP7 grew on me" about 5 times since i'm on this list (~1.5

that's how I say it too, but I don't know about the mystical creature bit.
It's actaully plural for some sort of strap that holds a baby into the
cradle, or something along those lines. I know it the cradle bit is
correct. And it kind of makes sense since it is their first lp.

wow...i like it a lot. it's a little downtempo, but
the vocals are beautiful. i can't wait to hear the
full thing. is there any word on any kind of us
release yet? or is it going to be like the previous
three singles (style, nothing left, beached)?

A friend of mine said much the same thing about the Plump DJs

found Plump DJs to be a bit hit and miss. You know, I might not even

Its just the nature of the beast, really. Its just because its a response to
a common question (Recommend some Ae? CD vs. vinyl? is safe?
etc etc) that new people tend to ask when joining a mailing list. And we are
all apparently on digest so we all answer the same question, which doesnt
help :-\
But, Im fairly certain I remember only one or two people other than myself
ever saying "EP7 grew on me", and that the other 99.9% of people either
immediately love or hate EP7. :-)

Yeah I was tempted to listen to it but after I loaded it and saw it
was a 30 second clip (instead of the whole song) I didn't want to
hear it. I shouldn't have listened to all the tracks I did already
(Tootled, Tension, Last Thing)...

Now that it looks like Orbital are doing a UK tour, it's not necessary

ordeal), but I still may need to fly in from seattle to at least catch
the brixton academy show if there is no US tour planned. Anyone have

To be totally honest, I listened to the clip and came away even less
impressed with the possibilities of this new album then before...... I'm a

indicative of the album, it may well be their worst one..... I'm saving full

I'm not sure what I think of it; its too hard to tell with a massively
compressed 30 sec sound clip. But I must admit it doesn't sound very
'orbital' to me. It sounds much much more 'pop'-ish. But yeah I agree we
shouldn't judge until the whole album comes out. Whatever it is, it should
be better than MoN (I've said it before and I'll say it again, that was a
weak album...) Also, I finally got the track from Beached. What did everyone
think of that? Maybe im just in a negative mood but that kinda sucked too.
oh well.

Subject: (orbital) funny break and music
Date: 24 Feb 2001 11:26:57 -0800 (PST)
well, i heard the 6 minute or so remix of funny break
by the plump djs (not the one that aired on british
radio, that was only 3mins or so). in my opinion,
it's quite good. i know everyone's complaining about
it, thinking that the song sucks. i don't know. i
think it's quite good. oh, on a side note, the mp3 of
it that we found seems to be recorded straight from
vinyl, as there is some popping and static sounds.
does anyone know of any promos or anything that are
out yet???
anywho, there was a comment that was made on the list
the other day, i don't remember who wrote it because
i've already deleted it, but they mentioned that funny
break was to "pop"-ish and if it and the other couple
of songs off the new album that are floating around
out there are any indication of how the album as a
whole will sound, then they probably won't like it. i
find this disturbing. now, i do agree that the sample
of the original funny break does sound pop-ish, i
wouldn't say that the song automatically sucks for
that reason. all that counts for me is the overall
musical quality. if it's good music, then it's good
music. oh well if it's not the exact same kind of
music that we're used to from orbital. i think it's
great that they're continuing to branch out from where
they started and are continuing to explore styles that
are farther and farther away from their original
style. the reason i say that orbital is my favorite
band is because the consistantly create beautiful
music. not because they consistantly create good
techno. they could turn into a rock band, and as long
as the music they made was really good on all levels,
then i'd like it (for the record, i don't really like
too much rock any more, so for a rock band to win me
over they'd have to make some really *good* music).
i'm sure there were some people that were pissed when
snivilisation came out cause orbital stopped making
the stuff they were used to. they felt alienated.
yet, if they had just sat down and really listened to
the album, and the ones that followed, and heard the
quality of the music, then they probably would've
really appreciated those albums. i'm sorry i'm
rambling on like this. it just pisses me off when
people don't appreciate music because it doesn't sound
exactly like they want it to sound. that's how we get
custom made bands like backstreet boys and all of
their look-alikes, and britney spears and all of her
look-alikes, and limp bizkit and korn and all of their
look-alikes. if orbital continued to make music the
way people expected them to during, say, the brown
album period, then we'd probably just have another ATB
on our hands, where damn near every song they make
sounds exactly the same. then there wouldn't be as
much musical quality there. there wouldn't be as much
to appreciate.
anyway, i've rambled for quite some time now. i guess
all i can say is that, when the album comes out, we
just all gonna have to put some headphones on, turn
the lights down low, close our eyes, and let orbital
take us on a brand new voyage that none of us have
experienced before. who knows, maybe the album won't
be good. i'm not saying i'm going to automatically
like it, simply cause it's orbital. that's
ridiculous. we're just all going to have to give it a
chance.
ok well that's enough out of me. sorry for your time.
brandon i.

Snivilization is their worst album, unquestionably.... I know a lot of
Orbital fans would call me crazy but hey, so hasn't everyone else.... It had
it's own redeeming qualities mind you, but I was not enthralled with the
music..... beautiful sounding in general??? I don't think so..... A lot of
that album just irritated me, not sure what exactly to say.... some were
quiet tunes like Attached, while others were upbeat dancy (Crash and Carry),
and others were just there (Kein Trink Wasser).... there are a few tunes I
enjoy off this album, yes.... Crash and Carry, Philosophy by Numbers, and
Sad but True are all great, while Are We Here is alright in stretches and
not so great in parts..... the album lacked a continuity and bounced about
too wildly for my tastes.... and a few of the songs quite frankly I just
don't like (Attached and Kein Trink Wasser)
I was the one who said that I wasn't pleased about the way the album tunes
that are out sounded, but I didn't say the new single was too poppish (tho
upon further inspection it is, and I hate pop... well I hate everything but
techno, ambient, and metal/industrial so....) Tootled I still dunno what to
make of it.... Sorry but I prolly never will... sampling Tool's Sober for an
Orbital song? That is disturbing to me, for some unquantifiable reason.....
as for Tension it is growing on m a little bit, but not as much as the stuff
off MoN did..... and Dr. Who I have heard a trillion times, and I never
liked it..... Funny Break doesn't impress me what little I heard.....
Will I get the album? Most assuredly. Will I be impressed? We'll see...... I
wasn't with MoN..... nor with Sniv..... In-Sides is simply the best album
they (or anyone else) has ever produced, and there is virtually no way that
it will ever be topped in my books... and while MoN grew on me.... I'm not
sure if the new one will...

I see you have already judged something you havent heard. I feel sorry
that you have set yourself up for a disappointment. Since this will never be
as good as In-sides, and most likely not even a good album, maybe you should
save your money and buy some of your own equipment and make your own
"In-Sides 2". P&P have already given us so much. It is selfish to want
everything they do to be YOUR favorite. Just be happy that P@P are happy and
know that they are creating music that THEY enjoy first and formost and if
you do too it is only a side effect.
I do not mean to insult you, I just want to point out your poor attitude
so that you may correct it.

i'll look for that. thanks for the pointer. mmm... l'usine. i'm about 2
seconds away from picking up that detroit escalator company lp from
forcedexposure, so i'll let you know how that is when i get it.
uh, so i don't have anything interesting to say (haven't heard the new
tracks, although i'm pessimistic at this point) except that i've always
found it amazing how people's tastes regarding orbital differ so wildly.
imho, all else pales in comparison to brown. hated sniv when i first heard
it, but it grew on me a lot. MoN i find very uneven, but still has moments
of brilliance. beach single sucked.
i guess i'll say that if it turns out that the new album does suck, it'll
be extra disappointing because i REALLY liked the mock tudor track on the
style single. that was orbital doing what they do best (or did best), ie.
being innovative and complex and melodic and good. so i guess we'll see
what comes of all this.

this is the other thing i wanted to comment on. people who listen to
electronic music AND phish rock. phish is the greatest rock band on the

and finally, a recommendation for everyone to check out luomo - vocalcity.
bouncy, minimal, and INSANELY funky house. hard to describe, just check it

Well, the first track I heard from MoN was Nothing Left, and I
loved it from the word go. Next tracks I heard were Way Out and Bigpipe
Style, which I also loved. I love MoN, and I have done for as long as
it's been around. AFAIK, I'm the only one, though.

Now, now. Anyhow, about the new stuff. My view is 'fuck it, it's
by Orbital, so why's everyone whinging?'. I dislike the version of
Tension broadcast on the Q Awards programme, but given that it's badly
edited, I've only heard it once, and live stuff isn't best suited for

honestly Lightfinger,. if they enjoy it that's great, more power to them....
I'd hate for any band to NOT enjoy the music they made.... however releasing
it as a commercial product means that they have to expect the fans to say
what they will about it, and comparisons are more then inevitable. I still
listen to the old albums, tho these days Underworld and Chem Bros get more
playtime then Orbital.... I am glad they made In-Sides, it is a blessing to
all of us..... but that doesn't mean I have to lower my expectations for
their new material.... they have built themselves a reputation and a
name.... and lets face it no matter what anyone says, there will be
comparisons to their old stuff..... Once a band has earned commercial
success in whatever form and has fans, comparisons are going to happen, and
judgments will be made. That's human nature.
Have I judged the new album? In a way maybe.... the 4 tracks (you figure
thats over 1 third of the album) I have heard from the new album just are
not up to their high standards, at least not from this listeners standpoint.
Tootled is the best of the 4 songs I'd say from my viewpoint, but I still
can't shake the weirdness of sampling Sober for it.... Will the rest of the
album be better? I certainly hope so, and since the singles of MoN were the
songs I liked the very least, I expect there to be a couple nice
surprises.... but it isn't going to be a listen to the whole cd disc like
In-Sides was.....
as for Snivilization vs. the Green album.... I will say I listen to the
Green album about as much as Sniv, which is to say once every 4 or so months
maybe.... I prefer the Green album to Sniv, albeit very slightly, because of
Oolaa and Desert Storm along with Chime and Midnight.... but I'd still much
rather listen to the brown album or In-Sides..... or the US Halcyon CD
single or Diversions or the Satan live set (for the non Satan tunes LoL) for
that matter....
anyways, I am looking forward to the new album, don't get me wrong.... but
as of right now I'm looking forward to the new Underworld more..... I'm very
curious to see what the difference is now that Darren Emerson has left....

Have a listen to 'Beneath the Radar' - their second album, IIRC.
Also, Dirty Epic is relatively free of Emersonisms. I've always thought
the two elements clashed - Smith and Hyde are completely different in
style to Emerson.

4th...

I wonder if I've heard that version of Tension. There is one version
I got off of Napster that sounded like it *could* be a studio version
because it had no crowd noise or anything and I liked that one a lot.
I heard a live version from New Year's and that one didn't seem as

Ah, now here I'll leave it - I don't want to spend ages
pondering what my order of preference is. Suffice to say that MoN and In
Sides are my favourites.

I'm trying not to listen to tracks from Napster / elsewhere on

Oh indeed. It's shaping up to be as good as In Sides and MoN, if
not better!

Well since this has given life to the list, ill throw in my two cents.
I cant believe so many people dont like MoN!? In my opinion its a very
distinct sound. Not what I would consider commercial at all, or at least
its very easy to tell it's orbital, and not the generic electonic music
made these days. As for new stuff, Ive only heard the live versions of
tootled and tension, but only once. I remember REAALLY liking Tension, and
tootled was just kinda boring. Nad righ tnow Im listening to the 6 minute
verion of the plummp Dj's remix and it sounds good (albeit a bit generic),
but im blaming that one on the djs rather than orbital (guess well have to
see!)
What im REAL excited about is the DVD. il have to find osmeone with 5.1
system and REALLY enjoy that!

You were probably responding to my comment. What I meant by it
(and I guess I didnt explain myself clearly) was that the new
track sounds, to my ears, like a lot of other pop-electronic
music that I've heard lately. How could I not be dissappointed
by that? I'm not dissappointed that Orbital changed their sound
as you say, I'm dissappointed that it changed to something that
sounds like a thousand other groups.
Now, if it doesnt sound like that to you, then cool, you will
get a lot more enjoyment out of it than me :-)

I shouldn't have listened to any because it does ruin the suspense. The
internet has ruined the days of opening up the cd and hearing it all for the

I was meaning to comment on this...I was recently
listening to the Peel Session (really loudly too), and
it's my opinion that this version of Attatched is a
lot better. Even simple things like the little
samples added in help. Also, is this version of

happens in side of me. it's beautiful.

One of the most noticable things is that the samples are quite a
bit louder.

Oh indeed. The beginning is harsher in the Peel Session version,
and I believe it's different in other ways too.

To be perfectly honest, I don't like Otono or Style too much,
and given that they sandwich Nothing Left, I usually listen to the album
in two separate parts.

This whole discussion appeared in the wake of the MoN
release too, so let me jump in too (again). I still stand
by my decision after all these years that I find In Sides
the worst cd Orbital ever made, if there is such a thing as
a worst Orbital cd. I mean, apart from Adnan's and The Box,
there isn't much to be happy about with that album.
MoN, however, was as you both agree a good album. Diverse,
experimental and a "live" album, well you probably get what
I mean by live.
> >Brown would come in 3rd and Green and Sniv tie for

Seems like the ranking's overturned here, put these two as
no 1 and 2 respectively, with Green in third. But of
course, these are just _my_ rankings of preference, anyone
else could beg to differ.
I've only listened to Tootled (but I wouldn't have if I
knew it was to be on the new album), there was a discussion
earlier which mentioned the track and I thought someone
said it was a bit older than to-be-released. That said, I
thought it sounded a bit in the lines of I Don't Know You
People (the same distorted rock-thingy going on for
Orbital), or was that just my distorted memory?

There are only TWO songs i don't love on that album, and that's P.E.T.R.O.L. and Dwr Budr

From what i remember when i talked to Paul about their past and future music was that he

Even though i personally would *love* to hear another In Sides-like Album, i nevertheless respect
their urge to evolve and go on rather than repeating themselves over and over again (e.g. like

Afterall i have several *days* of older Orbital music for my full enjoyment, so having that i just sit

I agree with you that the first three songs are just awesome. The only song
I don't absolutely love is Otono but it seems some people consider that one
their favorite off of MoN.
> To be perfectly honest, I don't like Otono or Style too

I think Style is really nice I always find myself humming the tune. Did you
all notice that the 'single' version sounds a bit more polished and also has
pieces of the "now i'm aching for you" vocal from early on (before finally
dropping the full sample) but the album version doesn't have any hint of the
vocal until mid-way (when it's the full sample, no bits and pieces of it are
played on the album version)? Hope that made sense.
> I find In Sides the worst cd Orbital ever made
Blasphemy! In Sides is my favorite cd of ALL TIME! I have like 250 cds or
so and probably more full cds on mp3 (that I never listen to).
> That said, I thought it sounded a bit in the lines of I
> Don't Know You People (the same distorted rock-thingy

Tootled does in fact sound a bit similar to I Don't Know You People but I
actually feel Tootled is a ton better (and I love MoN).
> I think his words were something along the lines of
> "Hey, look, i can make other music, too!" <:-)
Hey you got to talk to Paul? That's cool! While I think In Sides is great
I do have a feeling if they went out and tried to make another In Sides it
might make the album seem less special. Might sound stupid.. but I feel
like they perfected that 'sound' (whatever it may be) on the album and it
can't be done any better. I'm kind of glad they are doing different styles.
Plus it might sound forced if they tried to do another In Sides if that's
not what they're feeling.

I wish I lived over there! It would be neat to see Paul Hartnoll dj. Plus
I think Eat Static are great.. I wish I could buy their CDs over here in the

Another band that I think is brilliant (and the only band that reminds me of
