Everyone was dancing and cheering and having a good time. Except for the fact the a lot of people in the crowd smelled like they had spent their afternoon sitting in rotting carcasses, everyone was totally into it. I guess it's just because us Canadians know how to party. :) > Who shall step forward to save us? When there new album hits, we will be able to look into the gardens of musical heaven and say to ourselves, "So this is what it is all about." As for Drukqs, I think it will be like all Aphex disks, some absolutely incredible work meshed in with some distorted scraping sounds. However, I have faith since I really liked Come to Daddy (disk, not song) and Windowlicker. It's all a matter of time. I am looking forward to the Aphex North American tour which is to follow the double LP. Keep faith in this music. There is good music out there. It is just that we can no longer look to the same sources. It is like a return to the time when you first found out about electronic music and you had a hunger which needed to be fed. It was during this time that we found bliss in Orbital, Underworld and the Orb. No we must again continue our search to feed our hunger. But, just imagine what else is out there waiting for us to stumble across. Hope that gave you all some hope. take care kevin # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info orbital" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email orbital@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. # Orbital discography: http://www.swcp.com/lazlo-bin/discogs?orbital ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 17 Aug 2001 18:59:46 -0400 From: Marc Sawaya Subject: Re: (orbital) Are we all jaded? See www.warprecords.com for details. this is total hearsay, but i heard that it has something to do with his anxiety with performing in america. somebody who claimed to be "in the know" on the idm-list said that he (sqrpshr) sorta freaked out as he was about to get on the plane to come over here. supporting evidence for this is 1) until this year's coachella, he had NEVER played a show in america, 2) during the coachella set he was evidently guzzling a bottle of vodka and acting, well, drunk, and 3) he has somewhat of a reputation for getting booked at places in the US and then cancelling - the tour with plaid isn't the first time this has happened. but like i said, i have no real evidence for this - it's purely speculation. > they cancelled that NYC date and moved the what now is a Plaid/Mira Calix > show to the 20th, on a weekday, in some other venue, etc, etc. And, the > funny thing is, the price of the ticket went down from $17.50 to $15. So > Squarepusher was worth $2.50? Bollocks, I say! well, i paid $10 to see plaid in denver on tuesday. i then made the mistake of expressing my opinion about the show on the idm-l, and got completely bashed for it. so we'll try again (i'm a glutton for punishment): basically, i thought it was a good show. the music was phenomenal. the visuals were very cool. HOWEVER: - -the crowd didn't seem very into it. there were not that many people dancing (idm-l: "why should i have to dance to show that i'm enjoying myself, blah blah, etc, etc"), or even moving or smiling for that matter. the general attitude i thought was just dull and crappy. - -plaid weren't actually DOING a whole lot. i feel i know a thing or two about how electronic music is made, and as far as i could tell they were playing their song files in [max/msp/logic/whatever] and tweaking some parameters here and there. NOT that exciting to watch, especially since they didn't seem all that excited doing it. now i don't want to harp on this too much, but i do know that there are some electonic musicians (orbital, e.g.) who take a much more active approach when performing live. actually loading and playing individual loops and samples - not having everything be completely pre-sequenced. i feel like plaid didn't leave themselves very much room to play around, and it came across (to me!) as a bit static and out-of-their-control. so those are my gripes. i feel they are completely valid gripes. however, on idm-l i was accused of everything from "having a bad attitude" (which i don't really understand since i was dancing and enjoying myself, not just standing there motionless chain-smoking cigarettes like the majority) to being a "candy raver" (!). yeah, i don't understand it either. fuckin idm snobs. sorry to bitch about this here. if you saw the show, i'd love to hear what you thought. (just please don't give me shit for having an opinion!) cheers, nub # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info orbital" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email orbital@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. # Orbital discography: http://www.swcp.com/lazlo-bin/discogs?orbital ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 17 Aug 2001 23:25:59 -0700 From: "Kevin Gomes" Subject: Re: (orbital) Plaid/Squarepusher show canceled Actually, this sounds like it is probably correct. At the show that I went to, which was the first for the tour, the excuse that we were given was just simply that he did not get on the plane. Nothing was said about him being sick, which you would think that they would say considering that him being sick is a better excuse than he didn't get on the plane. Oh well, either way, he didn't come. As for what you said about Plaid, I totally here you. I know double figure inside and out due to the amount of play that I give it, and I know that one track for sure was exactly like it was on the disk. However, others were more than just tweaked, they actually had different parts in them. Maybe the new versions were what were programmed in. They did just look like they were just sitting there holding the mouse for the Macs though. I did see one of them crack a smile when the audience went wild over a track. Either way, they still were 100 times more entertaining than Ae's distorted void of randomness. I'm actually debating on whether I like it more than their first. I think it seems to flow much more nicely than Vegas did. They are playing 4 shows you could go to?? How long of a drive to each one. Man I only got to see them twice and I live in SoCal. I'd go see them because how often does an electronic artist come around to perform? I wouldn't be too surprised if most people weren't dancing to Plaid because they were probably bummed that Squarepusher didn't play. It seems a lot of people at the SoCal show really wanted to see Squarepusher and hadn't even heard Plaid before. I wish more people danced but it was an ok crowd... > -plaid weren't actually DOING a whole lot. I agree they didn't seem to be doing much but more than half the electronic artists I've seen perform like this. It's ok with me as long as I am showing support to a band I enjoy I don't mind how they want to do their live show. Who loads and plays individual loops other than Orbital? I can't tell with Crystal Method (their show seems less static than most though) or Underworld. Not often, and all the shows are within a 3-4 hour drive. two of them will only be about 30-45 minutes away from me (Austin, San Antonio) and i know its lucrative but these are the drastic measures i will go to to KILL nosey. If you dont know what Im talking about the Crystal Method have a mascot now, its a guy with a BIG NOSE instead of a face. oh the hilarity of it all. and get this, not only is he funny looking, but he's a bad mama-jama when it comes to breakdancing, skateboarding, chillin with his homeys, and yes, gettin it on. Watch the video for name of the game to understand. in other words its like the Crystal Method are trying to sell themselves using the same tactics i see in commercials for Golden Grahams or Hi-C. I refuse to support this. I almost cry when i hear the old album. Needless to say there are some good tracks (Nervous was GREAT live but man they messed it up), but still theyre just 'good', not good enough to excuse the rest. # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info orbital" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email orbital@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. # Orbital discography: http://www.swcp.com/lazlo-bin/discogs?orbital ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 20 Aug 2001 14:51:42 -0700 From: Brian Willoughby Subject: Re: (orbital) Re: bd vs. plaid [ From: Aronne Merrelli [ Subject: (orbital) Re: afx track names, bd vs. plaid, reviews, [ Date: Sun, 23 Apr 2000 13:50:58 PDT [ [ So I guess this Plaid compo is the only way any of this material [ will get re-released.
