Do a search on your computer for the file "mplayer2.exe" and execute it - this is the old version of Media Player. Now open the ASF file in this program and you can shift through the file. The problem is described in the Readme file that came with ASFRecorder, if you want the technical details. Date: 01 Nov 2001 14:10:56 +0100 Hi everybody from Giovanni. My fanzine 'Illegal Tales', dedicated to Sting and Police, has jus won a competition planned by Carlsberg, linked to the MTV Europe Music Awards of these days in Frankfurt. Seven people has been awarded with prizes (I still have to receive my own), but only one got the ticket to go to Frankfurt to see the show (if I'd wont it, I couldn't go anyway!); I am happy because I won sending the report I sent to you all, about the 11th September concert (rememebr about my story?), and they all considered it very interesting and emotional; I gave Sting a certain image I truly believe! Last year Lydia and I won as well, getting a lot of stuff from Carlsberg! Everything is linked to another Italian association dedicated to fanzines and fanclub, called fanzine.net. I'll tell you more about it when I will get the prizes!!! Date: 01 Nov 2001 15:52:02 +0000 Hi guys, It's Greg from Budapest, Hungary. Andy Summers performed last night with Darryl Jones and Dennis Chambers in my hometown, at the Petofi Hall. They played approx. a 100-minute-long set and they seemed to be in a very good mood. Andy said that he couldn't speak an awful lot of Hungarian unfortunately, but he was very pleased to be here for the second time (previously he made an appearance with Larry Coryell and Trilok Gurtu in Budapest in June 1996). They played some Summers, Monk and Mingus compositions with some brilliant solos and improvisations by all three members of the band. After the show we managed to talk with the guys and ask for their autographs. They came back to the stage when only 15-20 fans stayed there and were still waiting for them. They were very patient and friendly! I asked Andy why hadn't they played 'Behind My Camel' or 'Murder By Numbers' while he was signing my ticket... He made a funny grimace (just as he didn't like those songs anymore) but after that he explained that they usually do 'Murder By Numbers'... and then he smiled. He was a real gentleman I must add. It was an unforgettable night with great music from a former-Police member and the other two jazz cats!!! Set-list: 1. Strange Earth 2. ??? 3. Opus Three 4. Reincarnation Of A Lovebird 5. 'Round Midnight 6. ??? 7. ??? 8. Think Of One 9. ??? 10. ??? Encore 11. Tonight At Noon P.s.: I recorded the whole show, so I hope I can find out the titles of the unknown songs in the near future! :-) Bye, Greg _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp - To unsubscribe to police, send an email to "majordomo@xmission.com" with "unsubscribe police" in the body of the message. And I notice that the UK edition has, as part of the credits, "Mastrered [sic] at Abbey Road Studios, London" - add that to the typo list along with the heinously broken French lyrics in the Brand New Day booklet. In passing, I find it slightly annoying that the booklet also says "Recorded on 11th September 2001" when the version of Fragile on the CD is the single version that was recorded many days before. I think I also prefer the live version off the webcast to the single version - the single version is a bit too over-produced to my tastes. You expect it on bootlegs, but not on the official releases. Curiously, they got it right on the "includes" sticker on the front of the UK release. The version of Fragile on the album is the live version. There are three versions of the track currently "doing the rounds" - the live version, a studio version and a studio version edit (all three can be found on a UK promo-ony CDR). But to continue with the nit-picking, Mad About You wasn't performed on the 11th... But these minor irritations aside, the album is superb! Nice booklet also, but disappointingly, no live pictures. For those collectors/anoraks, the UK release has a silver "special edition" sticker on the front to distinguish it from the Euro release which has one less track. Cat no is 493 180-2 and the "s" and three dots on the front cover are black... Subject: (police) Top of the Pops and Radio 2 performance review Date: 06 Nov 2001 00:51:52 Hey Folks, Was nice to attend a few of the shows over the last couple of days. On Friday, we went up to London for the taping of the Top of the pops sting special at the BBC studios in London. The taping was for a 1hr special all on Sting. There was approx 150 fans in the room for the recording, and Sting played 10 songs, all which are supposed to appear on the broadcast later this month. The band was the same as the the Tuscany show except for Chris Botti being replaced by another couple of horn players, and Manu being replaced by Abe (who is just a wonderful drummer). Sorry, but I dont have time to do one of my silly reviews, just a quick summary. I cant remember the tracklisting order, but he played Set them free Dont stand so close When we dance All this time Mad about you Roxanne Fields of bored fragile Lose my faith Every breath you take The sound was poor in the venue, although it is more because we were situated with the speakers behind us as were so close. Gig was attended by the usual suspects except for Fred and Andrea, and Karel who never comes anyways... Tonight we went to the BBC Radio theatre in London for the recording of the Radio live concert with his stingness. This will be broadcast on the 1st of December on Radio2 at 8pm. The venue was quite an interesting little room. Felt like a mini lecture hall, with a recording booth at the back. The sound was excellent, although the Drums were a little loud, but man that Abe can play. For tonights show, Paul, Andy, Debs and I didn't have tickets, and despite all our usual sources, we found ourselves at 6pm still with no tix. Kipper and the gang didnt get a ticket allocation for this show, so even they couldnt help. At about 6.30, Dom came out with a smile and gave us tickets much to the anguish of the little french woman that was also trying to get tickets. She was hoolding onto Doms arms and begging him to get another, and he was looking at us and getting all embarassed. After telling her that we all go to the shows all the time, and he felt it unfair that we couldnt get in, he said he could only get the 4 for us. Thanks Dom ! Sting played I think 16 songs, I cant remember the order perfectly but it was more or less like this: Set them free Hounds of winter (abe let loose in the end of this, was amazing) Seven days Dont stand so close When we dance - probably the nicest version I have ever heard of this all this time mad about you Roxanne - messed up the lyrics a few times I'm so happy - Doms fingering on this is amazing thousand years / perfect love medley Brand New Day - nice bluesy version, really goes down well fields of gold - even I quite liked this tonight lose my faith - great energy tonight Every breath - also great, and he is finishing the song and then counting it back in again to repeat the close out again as he did on 10 summs tour Fragile - this was a mixture of the old version and the new version, the first half was the original version, up until half way through the guitar solo when the key jumps and then it was the new version until the end. Sting made a few jokes about him wearing a tux, although he was wearing the t shirt that Fred self imposed onto himself to pretend he was Joe. But the radio audience will obviously not know this. Pop-star Sting was among the passengers on Concorde's first fare-paying flight since being grounded after the crash in Paris last year. The pop star said he was delighted to be travelling on the supersonic aircraft again, having been a regular customer for 20 years. He added: "Concorde is a symbol of British Airways, of air travel and normal life. "Some people are too afraid to leave their homes and need to be encouraged to travel." 'Still excited' He said he had particular reasons to be pleased to use Concorde today as his wife, actress Trudi Styler, was giving a speech in New York tonight and did not realise that he was coming over. Sting added: "I'm still excited about going on Concorde even after all these years - flying at twice the speed of sound gives you a buzz." " Yes, I never quite feel that things are normal til I've had a good flight on the Concord . I wonder how this all might feel....having such unlimited amounts of money. Being disabled and trying to make ends meet on a daily basis, I just can not conceive of what it would be like to be able to fly whenever I wanted, let alone grabbing a last minute Concord flight. I bet the cost of that flight was more than my entire monthly costs for bills and food. I'm not complaining or looking for sympathy. I've got food on the table and my electricity is on. I just can't believe the incredible span of wealth that there is in this world and wonder if the "haves" have any idea what it's like to be a "have-not". Wealth and opportunity are not necessarily distributed by ability, talent or need. Sure, Sting is talented, but this incredible amassing of wealth.......what do you become? (and can I try it?) Date: 07 Nov 2001 15:06:40 -0500 Hello All, Oyster head at Hill Auditorium was an unbelievable show. It has been a long time since I have seen a show that has moved me musically beyond belief. When you watch Stewart Copeland and you are a drummer the only words that go through your head is this can't be real!! To all of you with no holds barred, this was the best display of musicianship I have ever seen!! I would not say that lightly, because I have seen quite a few good musicians. This Trio of Copeland, Anastasio, and Claypool captured the energy of the Police and then some. Likewise, there was a jamming quality to this where they just went off and blew everyone away. I am still trying to catch my breath from what I witnessed the other night. All I can say to anyone who has the chance to see this, DO NOT MISS IT!!!!! I will go out on no limb by overstating this point. Stewart held myself, The Crowd, Anastasio and Claypool in a spellbound stupor with his galactic talent. I am exstatic for Stewart, no offense to any of the Sting fans (of which I am one), but right now musically he is getting blown away by Oysterhead. If you need proof you had better go out and see for yourself, tickets are going fast but lots were available from the phishheads outside the door. Peace and Love, Terrence Sheehan PS here is a post form some phish phan who went, by the way I was'nt able to tape due to my seating location and thier policy, could have though if i'd have tried. I will get a copy of this show there were alot of people professionally recording and I will get a copy soon. Holy shi*, what a show! I'm glad it was wayyyy better than I expected, you have to see those three guys live to believe it! Trey: ..very different than anything I've seen from him. he really laid back in the cut alot, but not too much though. He blew me away not by his shredding, but the way he held back at times and complimented the others. Birthday Boys was excellent IMO. He sounded great, and looked like he's finally happy again with what he's doing. Les: What do you expect? A showboat, but it works here cause he has class and sits back when he needs to. I'm not much for the FFFB anymore but I thought he was great. I'd seen Primus a few times when they were in their prime but this is definetely a different role. Also, I don't feel the band sounds like Primus or Phish after tonite. Also he was great on the encore which I called on the spot in front of about eight people. Guess the encore, always a fun one. :) Stewart: :) :) ..I was talking with some guys about Copeland before the show, telling them this is the only reason I came. One kat from Tahoe was telling me he just started playing a couple years back and just got a new set. I told him about when I got my first trap set sixteen years back and how it was partly due to Copeland and listening to Synchronicity over and over. This guy must of pissed in his drawers because Stew was more than he'd expected. He's looking back at me and saying, "how can this be." His friends were blown away I think just as much by Stew as they were by thier buddy's excitement over watcing Stew. Really though, a legend at work in front a small crowd (compared to his standards). He did not let me down, nor anyone else tonite that I talked with. His percussion setup was sick! Bells, bells, bells, what looked to be another drumset mounted (roto-style) so he could stand with the heads off the bottoms, and a snare also. His main setup was stripped down from what he use to play with the Police but still enuff to fill up the 16wheeler out back. This was the real star of the show IMO, and Les and Trey both knew it. You could see by watching them that they were so confident with Stew back there. Even the roadies didn't move once during the set I don't think because they were too busy watching Stew. Honestly, I'm not much for the originals but maybe a few. It was the live show and the band that I cared about seeing from the beginning. There is no other band out there like this one. They jam, but not like Phish. It's just different, shorter but enuff to make we wanna see them again. Oh yes, hopefully someday. First it showed him on the Concorde, saying how much he enjoyed it, etc., and he was referred to as "the ubiquitous Sting", with some disparaging remark made about his "shameless self-promotion" or words to that effect. In a subsequent item, he was shown at the London premiere of Harry Potter and dissed again. I wasn't in the room for that one, but it sounded just as disdainful. I don't like the fact that Stew say f**k a possible Police reunion, but I think it comes from him doing something now. Wait until his Oysterhead gig stops and it will be back to the "I'm still waiting" routine. Oysterhead mates bring Copeland out of his shell by Sarah Rodman Friday, November 9, 2001 How did Stewart Copeland describe the first show he performed with his new band, Oysterhead, last spring in New Orleans? ``It was a lot of fun, but it was a 2-hour train wreck,'' says the former Police man. The supergroup - featuring main Phish-erman Trey Anastasio on guitar and vocals, primary Primus member Les Claypool on bass and vocals, and the ferociously percussive Copeland on drums - should satisfy gearheads the world over. New England fans will get to stare in open-mouthed stupefaction as technical virtuosity and noodling collide at a speedily sold-out show tomorrow night at the Tsongas Arena. That New Orleans show was also a quick sell-out, which amazed Copeland. ``I was hardly even aware of the following of Les Claypool and Trey Anastasio,'' says Copeland. ``I had sort of heard of their groups but I didn't have any idea that there would be that much interest in the show. So when the tickets sold out in 12 minutes, I thought `Jeez, these are not my fans.' Because my fans were busy getting the kids to school. And I thought, `Well, somebody in this band is famous.' ``And then a few days later, when the tickets were being sold on eBay for $2,000, I thought to myself, `Those are my fans,' the ones that are now CEOs with big, high-paying jobs.'' Prior to that much-bootlegged, admittedly derailed New Orleans performance, Copeland hadn't played drums in close to 10 years but, he says, ``There were enough high points amongst all the carnage that we decided to keep on going.'' Anastasio was on hiatus from Phish, Copeland had some space in his busy film-scoring schedule and Claypool has mastered balancing multiple projects, so the members of Oysterhead reconvened to record their debut album, ``The Grand Pecking Order.'' The results are often as wacky as you might expect but far more accesible and melodic than you might envision. The album zigzags from the ambient dance grooves of ``Little Faces'' to the impossibly clever and tasteful Zappa-esque pop of ``Mr. Oysterhead'' to the spacey, reggae-jazz of ``Oz is Ever Floating.'' Copeland even contributes the voice of a maniacal tyrant on the manic ``Wield the Spade.'' ``It's got elements of all three things,'' he says. ``It's got the waft of Phish, the thrust of Primus and,'' he falters, searching for the right descriptive phrase, gives up, laughs and says, ``and the drums, I guess, of the Police.'' Speaking of which, you can blame Sting for the lack of a Police reunion, which led to the formation of Oysterhead. ``Up until recently I was maneuvering and cajoling (for a reunion) and Sting would always say, `Well, never say never.' That's because he's a tease. Then I met Les and Trey and now I couldn't give a (expletive) about the Police.'' Copeland calls his new bandmates titans and gushes with admiring profanities about what a pleasure it is to play with them. ``Those guys are (expletives). It's absolutely wild and I'm much more passionate then I ever was when I did drums for a living.'' Yet Oysterhead's definitive designation as a side project is what makes it alluring for all involved. ``We each have full lives,'' he says. ``I have a career as a film composer; I like this work, I'm doing really well at it.'' Indeed, the 49-year-old multi-instrumentalist has scored more than 50 films in the past 15 years - from Oliver Stone's ``Wall Street'' to the recent 'N Sync movie, ``On the Line.'' ``I work at home, I have my pristine studio and it's all grown up. And then I have Oysterhead, which is a wild, absolute hysterical abandonment of responsibility. It's the antidote to all that professionalism. ``But,'' Copeland says, ``if Oysterhead was a real band, where you have nine months of touring and then you record and then you go tour Europe, I think that would take a lot of the buzz out of it. It's so intense because it's limited and right now we have nothing planned beyond this tour.'' Yet Copeland expects Oysterhead will figure into his future. ``I think Oysterhead will be very long-lived but sporadic, so that keeps it intense,'' and he proclaims, ``we're happy as clams.'' Um, shouldn't that be oysters? - To unsubscribe to police, send an email to "majordomo@xmission.com" with "unsubscribe police" in the body of the message. Also, was there a new version of After the Rain released with the new video on it? I think he contradicts himself here because the fact that he is concerned that the Police went out on Top seems that he is nostalgic. One of the single most frustrating things to come from this never-ending hiatias for me was a statement Sting made in the BTM on Vh-1 when he said, and I quote: "I'm not a nostalgic person, particularally...but I never said I wouldn't... I ranted and raved about THAT for a week! I am happy for Stewart, just as I am happy for Andy, that they both have "gotten on with it" because, though it pains me to say it, to want for Sting to reform is an effort in futility. I hope that Oysterhead really takes off and the praise on Stewart continues - Sting is such an egomaniac that he would probably WANT to reform The Police, just to prove that HE can get Stewart to play his best! Stewart Copeland has a energy level that I cannot recall in orther drummers, You really get the feeling your watching an athlete at work , as well as and artist. Stewart's band is far more exciting to me than Sting's current project, although I hear good things about this live album/dvd. I know Sting has the ability to go back to playing with top musicians exclusively and get rid of this compaq/computer techno driven pop. What has happened to him? How can you play with a band of musicians like Blue Turtles, The Police and then move into this techno cheeze thing. The Bottom line is Stewarts band is Kicking Ass, in his words, and the Last time Sting was Kicking Ass Stewart Copeland was by his side. I am much more aware of Stewarts role in the Sound of the Police now after this Oysterhead album, If the Police get back together someday great, but the new feeling of Oysterhead will never be achieved with a Police reunion. Sting needs a good dose of what Stewart Copeland is offering. And what else did Sting play in Newcastle? Track listing is, I believe, as follows: 1: Mad About You (5:31) 2: Ain't No Sunshine (5:05) 3: Island of Souls (8:27) 4: The Wild Wild Sea (6:03) 5: The Soul Cages (6:18) By checking the file sizes, you should be able to work out which files are Island of Souls and which are The Wild Sea - about half of them are mislabelled, if my memories of Napster a year ago are anything to go by. First of all, I hope nobody of us is injured in the tragic event of Queens today! Sting entered the charts at number 4 in Italy, that means a great success, considering the amount of new releases of last week, including a lot of Italian acts! Well done Sting, once again!
