I'm glad I decided to wait until right before I left for England to cancel-- mine has shipped as well. :) So those of you outside of the UK who didn't cancel-- your patience has probably been rewarded. My order was still listed as 'Processing' and we are in the saving every penny mode (even though I finally justified catching up on the DVD's)... so I actually cancelled my order and replaced it. (After writing and asking if it was possible to get the new price without cancelling.) So my questions are... Was the price lower (27.99) before the September release date went up? IOW, was that just part of the typo? And more importantly... *How long are these things usaually in 'processing'?* Now that I started my wait over, I'm curious. I'm waiting on season two and three here... but I did also send for The Vanishing Earth from Benson World (worked out cheaper to get the single there and the box sets MVC) and it has shipped. So I'll have something new to drool over soon. :) Kristy The Sap Friend _________________________________________________________________ MSN 8 helps eliminate e-mail viruses. I agree with some that is not as good as some of the others. Infact, I think it is a below average story. First of all, I thought the woman Meave was annoying through most of the whole story. Another thing was bad was these creatures who sounded like the little people in the Wizard of Oz. All they seemed to want to do was wear a mask or flash a plastic spider at people in order to obtain fear. The story seemed to have bits borrowed from the Vanishing Earth, A Man For Emily, and the Thargon Menance except the story was worse than all of them. Since we have commentaries for the DVD's, mabye we need some for the audios, or at least get some questions answered about them at the Tomorrow People convention in May. Although the story was not that good, I believe the next two stories should be good since they are being written by the writers of the stories Mendez and Atlantis. Let's hope so. To be precise about things... IRC is the name of the type of chat you're referring to; mIRC is only one of dozens of different clients one can use to access that sort of chat - rather like you can use Netscape, Internet Explorer, Opera, et. al. to browse the Web. (Pure opinion moment: I wouldn't use mIRC if someone paid me to -- I much prefer other clients.) IRC is really a description of "how it works", just like the HTTP standard for WWW servers allows you to access web sites all over the world. The idea I'm trying to get across here is that unlike "closed" chat systems like AIM, ICQ, Yahoo! IM, and so on where there's one set of servers run by the company that controls that chat system, there are actually many different independent sets of servers in the world that any standard IRC client can access, but are set up with varying purposes and rules for use. Sorcery is the collection of servers that the Tomorrow People IRC channel uses. It's not the best analogy, but you could think of the collection of servers you connect to -- Sorcery, EFnet, Undernet, etc. -- to be akin to selecting a radio band -- AM, FM, shortwave -- and then the chat channel on that network as the particular station you want to listen to in that band. If your radio is set to AM, you can't listen to an FM station, just as if you're hooked up to (say) an Undernet server, you can't participate in a channel on Sorcery. > I would like to join in one of the chats. I got my Apex AD-1500 for $86.55 ($79.95 plus tax), with a $20 mail-in rebate, for a final cost of $66.55. Now, I realize money's tight for a lot of people -- but if you can afford the cost of the Tomorrow People DVDs, my guess is that another $70 for a player that does a truly AMAZING job of playing PAL DVDs back on NTSC televisions shouldn't be a huge hardship. On top of that, if you're interested in other material only available on imported DVDs, the Apex unit I have can have its firmware "upgraded" to turn of region-coding entirely. We are a member of the Commonwealth of Nations, which is made up of former British colonies. We are a sovereign nation (despite what George W. thinks). Being so close to the US we're pretty much stuck with whatever you get in terms of television and video formats, and our supply of British stuff is not much better than yours. I had to order my DVDs from Britain and buy a converting DVD player, just like everyone else in North America. On the other hand, the DVD player I got (based on the recommendations of TPDIS members) was very cheap (I think it was $89 Canadian, which at the time was about $56 US) so I didn't feel I had to wait for a special occasion. My 11 and 13 year old sons actually like the TP in spite of the cheesy effects, and keep asking me when the next set of DVDs will arrive (what's the point of having kids if you can't warp their little minds?). ******************************** Jane (Edmonton, Alberta, CANADA) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: "Kristy Fahrenwald" Subject: Re: TPDIS: MVC.co.uk - Good news! But I think his biggest objection is how much of it he's seen lately. As my DVD's come in I'm going to be sending my tapes to one of my former (college) students who lived in the UK when her kids were little. They are in the 'preteen' age range now and really miss British TV! I gave them two tapes when I had her in class last summer and she told me they just ate them up. She watched on with them and then put the other in while she worked elsewhere in the house and they ran in every couple of minutes in a panic to update her on the action. But I think his biggest objection is how much > of it he's seen lately. The TP is definitely not my kids' favourite show - that position is currently held by Buffy and The Simpsons - but they do like it. The 11 YO (Will) is not quite as keen as the 13 YO (Thomas), who also likes the audio cds, and will quite often take them upstairs to listen to at bedtime. He was very impressed that John, TIM and Stephen were played by the same actors as in the TV series. Stephen is their favourite character so far, with Kenny as runner-up. I don't think they can relate to John yet but they like him well enough. They both disliked Carol, but like Elizabeth. Elizabeth reminds them of Will's wonderful grade 3 teacher (even the kids who weren't in her class love her and the parents think she walks on water). Will has an excellent teacher this year in grade 5, but Mrs. P. will always be #1 (the less said about the grade 4 teacher the better). **************** Jane in Edmonton ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: "Jackie Clark" Subject: TPDIS: Michael Standing Date: 08 Apr 2003 19:34:05 +0100 Hi Folks I've received an email enquiring about Michael Standing and I know that the name sounds familiar but can't recall what part he played in the show. I don't recall precisely, but I believe he's mentioned in the commentaries for "The Blue and The Green" as they're talking about Chris Chittel, who was hired to play Chris Harding after Mr. Standing suffered an injury that prevented his returning as Ginge. It's more of a mention in passing, with no more detail than is needed to explain why Ginge is gone and Chris is there. Thanks! mike ------------------------ TP DVD FAQ Q1: So, what?s this about the Tomorrow People being on DVD? A1: A company by the name of Revelations Films Limited has licensed the rights to produce DVDs of the original 1970?s Tomorrow People series. Q2: Which episodes are available on DVD? A2: Currently Series 1 and 2 have been released both singly and as box sets. A Series 3 box set has been released in limited numbers in MVC retail stores in the UK, and has apparently been available to order online at mvc.co.uk. This box set is supposedly not set to be released officially until September, 2003, and until recently the MVC online site had removed the release date of March 28, 2003 from its preorder site and listed the September date. Members of TPDIS have since been informed that their order has been processed and the site now lists March 28, 2003 as the release date. No one as of this FAQ has reported receiving the box set from MVC online. The first serial from Series 3, ?Secret Weapon? is set to be released singly on April 28, 2003. Q3: Will all of the serials be released on DVD? A3: Revelations has indicated their intent to release the entire run on DVD. In some cases more than one serial will be on one DVD disc (the disc listing for Series 3 has ?A Man for Emily? and ?Revenge of Jedikiah? on the same disc). Q4: How often will the DVDs be released? A4: So far the DVDs have been released for the most part on a quarterly basis (3 to 4 months). Q5: Will I be able to watch the DVDs on my DVD player? A5: A qualified maybe. The DVDs are in Region 0 with respect to region encoding but are in PAL color video format. Q6: What?s region encoding? A6: Region encoding is a method of coding DVDs to prevent them from being played in a region outside of their production/release. The world is split into six regions ? Region 1 is North America, 2 is Japan, Europe, Middle East, and South Africa, 3 is Southeast Asia, 4 is Australia, New Zealand, Mexico, Central and South America, 5 is Northwest Asia and North Africa, and 6 is China. Region 0 means that there is no region encoding, the DVD is regionless and should be playable on any DVD player. Q7: If there?s no region coding then I should be able to play the DVD, right? A7: Logically, that would make sense, but isn?t necessarily true. Some DVD players have been manufactured to only play DVDs that have a specific region encoding. This is one way manufacturers try to prevent bootleg ?rips? of commercial DVDs or to prevent people from hacking DVD players to either be region free or capable of switching region. These DVD players, although uncommon, may refuse to play regionless discs. Q8: Why are the Tomorrow People DVDs listed on-line as being Region 2? A8: The DVDs are being produced and sold for retail in the UK. The UK is in Region 2, so it makes sense that if the DVDs were encoded they would be in Region 2. However, the DVDs themselves are marked as Region 0 and so far as anyone has been able to determine, really are regionless. Q9: What is PAL color video format? A9: PAL stands for Phase Alteration Line, which is a color video format used in the UK and other countries. The United States uses a color video standard known as NTSC (National Television Systems Committee). PAL improves on NTSC by using double scanning to reduce ?scatter? in hue from the signal. The two formats are not compatible. In order to view a show in PAL format on an NTSC television you will need an NTSC-PAL converter. Q10: Where can I get an NTSC-PAL converter? A10: Try a local electronics store (i.e. Radio Shack), or else online. There are NTSC-PAL converters available for about $30 (US). Q11: Are there any DVD players that convert PAL to NTSC? A11: Yes, there are. One brand that has been recommended by multiple people on the list is Apex. They have a line of DVD players that have built in PAL-NTSC conversion and are very cheap. There are other brands that have PAL-NTSC converters, but they tend to be pricey. Q12: Can I view the DVDs on my DVD-ROM drive? A12: Another qualified maybe. As computer displays operate differently than television displays there should be no need for converting the signal. The DVD should simply play on your computer using its DVD player program. There have been a number of people who have reported no problems viewing the DVD on their computers, with both PC and Macintosh users. If there is a problem with you viewing the DVD on your computer it is most likely a software/driver issue. Q13: What special features do the DVDs have? A13: There are commentaries track from many of the actors from the show. In particular, Nicholas Young (John) and Peter Vaughn-Clarke (Stephen) have commented on all the releases thus far. Philip Gilbert (TIM, Timus, Tikno) contributed to the first series of DVDs. Elizabeth Adare (Liz) contributed to the second series of DVDs. Anne Curthoys (Tricia Conway) provided commentary for Secret Weapon and presumably Revenge of Jedikiah (we?ll have to wait and see). The credits for the commentaries on the DVDs and online listings for them have been notoriously inaccurate. The DVDs have also included Character Biographies, Photo Galleries, and an Episode Guide. Q14: What is the quality of the special features? A14: Well, the commentary is pretty entertaining. The production of the remaining special materials seems to lack quality control and proofing. Numerous errors have been seen with regards to information in character biographies (including a picture of Mike used in place of one of PVC?s for the character of Stephen as well as elements from Mike?s character being ascribed to Stephen), episode descriptions, and credits. In addition, Revelation has used material from TP fan sites without the site authors? permission, or in some cases even knowledge, and has given credit for that material to other people. After complaints were made regarding one of these instances that particular material was removed from their website (however, the DVDs that had that content on them obviously are already out and unlikely to be recalled or re-pressed) Q15: Where can I purchase these DVDs outside of the UK? A15: There are a number of online stores that sell the DVDs and ship worldwide. Two of the largest and most often recommended on the list are MVC (mvc.co.uk) and Blackstar (blackstar.co.uk). They offer very reasonable shipping rates worldwide and have good return and guarantee policies. You may also run across the DVDs in specialty shops, but will likely pay more for them as they are considered ?imports?. You may also find copies of the DVD available over E-bay, but as always with things like E-bay, be wary of what you see. Someone was selling ripped ?NTSC? versions of the TP DVDs saying that a friend had given them a copy of it and they already had a copy and wanted to sell it to share with other fans. There is NO official NTSC version of the DVDs, so this person?s ?friend? very likely didn?t give them a copy and they most certainly didn?t already have one of their own. __________________________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? But if I'm right they also state that this is the first mention of Earth being a closed world... I thought Carol had mentioned that in SoJ. My real question... where did they get this info? Was this from someone's site like their other info or did someone actually do this up just for the DVD? 2. It does sound very much like Nick Young believes Michael Standing to be dead. He is preparing to tell a few tales from off the set and says something like "I can say this now since he is unfortunately no longer with us." Date: 17 Apr 2003 14:15:56 -0400 Have I missed something? What is Mind Music?   Mind Music is a spanking new all Tomorrow People gen fanzine based primarily on the original series - I have been planning it for years but only got to working on it full throttle after last Thanksgiving and it's finally ready for "consumption" We pick the beastie up on Saturday and start binding then shipping. We'll also have copies for sale before and after the 30th anniversary party or anytime folks can catch us while we're in England. I'll also be bringing copies of our other TP crossover fanzines: "The Mind Over Matter Affair" TP/Man from UNCLE "Cooperative Venture" TP/Zorro I'll also have a few copies of "Who Knows" our Doctor Who fanzine available in England as well. Just a reminder to the folks coming to the party, I will be able to bring fanzines from other universes with me for sale before or after the party. Please shoot me an e-mail off list if you want anything in particular so I can pack it up. I always get confused with what plug goes where). On a related but slightly different note: I got my Series 2 DVD box set in the mail the other day! As such, I don't really need my series 1 or series 2 tapes any more. These are multi-generation (likely third) dubs that I got back when the tape tree was still active (thanks Wendy!). The quality is decent, but obviously not as high quality as the DVDs. As such, I'm offering them free to whomever would like them, providing they're willing to reimburse me for the postage costs (if it's in the US, it'd probably come out to $4 or so, country zone depending). So if there's anyone out there who doesn't have the $$$ for the DVDs but would like to see what all the fuss is about this Original Series, let me know. mike __________________________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? If anyone's interested in this please tell us when you arrive. Unfortunately I do have work on the Monday morning and other things to do before then! I hate how reality gets in the way of my plans don't you? The Thames studio is ten mins drive away from the hotel, as is the bridge and waste land used in AMFE, The school used in B&G is five mins around the corner from that too! I'd suggest that a group of you go by train to see the Lab, Tower Bridge, Tower of London Cleopatra's needle and Canary Warf (and Greenwich too) as driving into London with the congestion charge etc is terrible and not recommended for the faint hearted. Clacton on sea is in Essex and would take about a two hour drive to get there! Torquay is in Devon and it would be difficult to get there and back in a day! Don't forget to add Victoria Station. The shoppes on the upper level there served as the "American Airport" in the origin story for the new series. From the Old Greenwich Observatory you can get a nice view with Canary Wharf (Rameses Ak'hara's headquarters) in the distance, just like in the serial. I was disappointed that there is no observation deck in the Canary Wharf tower. It seems the pyramid part is where the utilities and services for the building are located. The Docklands Light Railway stops right at the base of this building. I also think it may have since been extended to Greenwich. When I was there I had to walk under the Thames. There is/was a separate rail line to Greenwich. Also worth adding if you have lots of time and an interest in museums: The British Museum. If I remember correctly, it's near Royal Albert Hall in Kensington. I think it's one of the best museums in the world... That's an interesting observation. They do seem to be largely sane, which is very nice. Maybe it's because there was less money involved? The typical paycheck for an actor on a regular show in the US is considerably larger in the States than the UK, and brings with it a host of temptations and "dangerous corners" where it's possible to go off the rails. In the UK about the most you could do on the money at the time was buy a fast car. They haven't in the episodes I've seen (up to the end of season three) unless you count Worlds Away but there they are taught the Pyrie language at the Trig (which is what got me thinking about this) and presumably by some complicated method. Languages are one of those things usually associated with telepathy in fiction so it strikes me as curious that it doesn't seem to have been mentioned. I seem to remember from the books that when Tsui Tai breaks out they end up in Tibet so are they automatically able to speak the language there or is it just never discussed? Can anyone enlighten me? Hello.

I was wondering: do the Original Series TP's ever show any particular
talent for languages? They haven't in the episodes I've seen (up to the
end of season three) unless you count Worlds Away but there they are
taught the Pyrie language at the Trig (which is what got me thinking
about this) and presumably by some complicated method.

Languages are one of those things usually associated with telepathy in
fiction so it strikes me as curious that it doesn't seem to have been
mentioned.

I seem to remember from the books that when Tsui Tai breaks out they end
up in Tibet so are they automatically able to speak the language there or is it just never discussed? Can anyone enlighten me?

Just curious.

Unless the Time Guardians are more highly evolved and think on a different 'wavelength' or something? Then the pyramid wouldn't affect them because it was aimed at a different type of telepath. Thanks for the reminder about the languages in 'A Rift in Time'. So even if the device stopped working the day the left the planet, TPs wouldn't suddendly pop up - biological evolution hadn't run its course, like it did on Peerie. So assuming the Kultan device was placed in the pyramid right after completion -- it had been there roughly 2500 years by 1 AD; that's quite a while. :) Granted, the Kultan device was intended to last a long time, but even the best designs can have one component go bad or the like, especially without any kind of maintenance. I mean, why build a machine to last 10,000 years by itself if you expect to BE there to maintain it -- the whole point of the Kultan psi-damper was to ensure no telepaths were able to challenge their control. It's not inconceivable to me that by 1 AD, the device was at least in some stage of breaking down (perhaps limiting its range), if not completely inert. What I found puzzling about _A Rift In Time_ was that when the TP arrive, they discover all their powers are gone; the effect apparently vanishes when the Time Pump implodes, implying that it was some piece of Gaius' equipment producing the effect -- but he later seems surprised when the TP jaunt away, and makes that remark about getting something to block that ability. If Gaius didn't know about teleportation, why did he have a device operating to block it from the beginning? :) And if it was the Kultan device causing the trouble at the beginning, why didn't it continue to do so? One could argue he had the first device to ward off Time Guardians and/or to keep Peter there -- but if he knows about Time Guardians, why doesn't he know they can teleport? It's never really clear exactly what Gaius knows about Peter at first, other than he probably suspects Peter of being a fellow time-traveller of some kind. Well -- as I recall, John said something like all his powers *except* the ability to interpret language were gone. For instance -- we know that Roger Price really did NOT want to drop Stephen/PVC, but was forced to; many people have enjoyed his commentaries on the DVDs (including his humorously disparaging comments on his own performance), and we know from various sources that PVC's fond of the TP fans and a basically nice, friendly person. It seems clear that sort of thing will work to his favor, while the "attitude" Mike Holloway has shown probably works against him. Not to say this sort of thing is the main factor, but if someone likes a character to begin with and then finds out the actor portraying that person is likable separate from the character, it seems to me only reasonable to like the *character* even more. Sometime close to twenty plus years ago I watched the Tomorrow People on Nickelodeon. It was unlike anything seen then or since. Not quite a kid show, but not quite for adults either. It came about at a time of life when fitting in seemed to be more important than who you actually were and maybe that is why it has remained important to me all of these later years because these kids were not like anyone else and they accepted themselves for what they were, apart from the general society. The online community is great, it is good to know I was not the only one to watch the kid sister's nickelodeon. I know I have missed many episodes, but hope to order some of the audio CD's soon Thanks, Gabriel _________________________________________________________________ Add photos to your messages with MSN 8. Even if I really didn't like PVC (how I would form this opinion, I dunno), I just preferred his character to Mike's. Actors come in three stripes; good, competent, and bad. I don't like Charlton Heston, but credit him with being a competent actor. I like Eartha Kitt, but her Catwoman was like stripping paint. I think the address is http://www.timeslip.org.uk/ Re: the survey - one TV show I forgot to add as a favourite is "Timeslip", which is well overdue for the DVD treatment. Most of the colour episodes were wiped decades ago (sacrilage!) but b/w copies still exist, they were released on VHS some years ago. Did anyone else on this list enjoy this show? johnny ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: "Jackie Clark" Subject: TPDIS: Happy anniversary TP Date: 30 Apr 2003 18:56:25 +0100 Well folks, I've uncorked my bottle of wine (But please don't tell John), settled myself at the PC and prepared to celebrate the official 30th anniversary of the first broad date of The Tomorrow People on Thames TV. I now know why, as a child, I missed the first ever episode. Today is also my sister's birthday but on this occasion she is celebrating with her family and not me! So come on everyone, either join me in chat on Mirc (usual channel) or prepare a drink for yourself and raise a toast to another 30 years of TP and many more years of TPDIS. The long-deleted ITC videos of the series now sell second-hand for silly money - up to £40 or £50 per double-pack. Strange really when I picked at least 2 of these out of the Virgin store bargain bucket not long after they were out for around £8. Recent efforts going through the ATV 2" tape collection have reportedly turned up a considerable amount of material that was thought lost. So there may still be hope for colour Timeslip episodes to be found, although it is sometimes said that the tapes were never lost but damaged. Anyway, time will tell ... Jez --
