Any sale wouldn't affect his ownership of the Texas Rangers, his major league baseball team. ``As much as I love hockey and the Stars, I have met and exceeded the goals I set six years ago,'' Hicks said in a statement Monday. ``After much thought and private discussion with my family, I have decided this is an appropriate time to become a one-team owner rather than a two-team owner.'' Hicks purchased the Stars in 1996 for $84 million, and the team won the Stanley Cup three years later. The Stars missed the playoffs last season for the first time under Hicks' ownership, which resulted in the firing of coach Ken Hitchcock midway through the season. J.P. Morgan Securities Inc., the company hired by Hicks, declined to specify a proposed purchase price for the Stars and the half-ownership in the Center Operating Company that operates the $420 million American Airlines Center that opened last year. A sale could take months to complete. ``We will take as long as needed to explore a sale, and if the right owner does not step forward, I won't sell,'' Hicks said. Hicks said the sale of the Stars would help him concentrate more of his efforts on the Rangers, who will finish last in the AL West for the third straight season. ``I am totally committed to transform the Texas Rangers into a team that competes every year for the division title and eventually win its share of World Series championships,'' Hicks said. ``Hopefully, this alignment of my personal interests and schedule will accelerate our strategies and tactics for the baseball team.'' The Stars and Rangers are owned through Hicks' Southwest Sports Group, which controls his personal sports and entertainment investments. Southwest Sports also owns the Mesquite Championship Rodeo, a half-interest in a minor league team that begins play in Frisco next year and is the developer of a 75-acre sports complex and mixed-use project where that team will play. The result is a Utah training camp roster featuring 19 players who weigh 200 or more pounds and are 6-foot-2 or taller. Adding their combined penalty minutes from last season would be like trying to figure out how much money Enron officials got away with. "I'd like to have somebody to go in and play a more physical role," Hay said Wednesday after the first day of Grizzlies training camp at the Acord Ice Center. "He may not always be in the lineup, but against certain teams, you like to have somebody like that." The Stars and Canadiens, like many other NHL teams, have cut their numbers of the tough and physical players, frequently referred to as enforcers. But not everybody has done away with the intimidation-by-brute-force strategy. Several times last year, other AHL teams used physical play to slow down the Grizzlies. Apparently, it worked more than Hay wanted to admit. "They are looking for me to bang some bodies and get real physical," said 6-foot-7, 234-pound forward Jeff Ewasko. "They said they were changing their philosophy from last year and were looking for an enforcer." Despite all those big bodies on the ice, there were no fights Wednesday. Hay put a leash on the players, explaining they would have time to show their pugilist skills during scrimmage games later this week. "I told them no fighting for the first two days because I just want to evaluate their skill level," Hay said. "To be a tough guy is great, but if you can't get on the ice at our level, then it doesn't matter how tough you are. Unless you can skate and have some hockey sense, you won't make this team. I'm hoping to find a guy to fit that description." Among the candidates: * Ewasko: He had eight goals, 32 points and 259 penalty minutes playing for the Long Beach Ice Dogs of the WCHL last season. * Petr Suchanek: The 6-4, 220-pound defenseman had one goal, 14 points and 190 penalty minutes with Idaho of the WCHL last year. * Mike Sgroi: In addition to compiling 207 penalty minutes, nine goals and 21 points, the 6-5, 210-pound forward is a former Toughman Contest competitor. There are others, but perhaps the most interesting big man in the Utah camp is 22-year-old Justin Pehrson. A native of West Valley City, he just started playing hockey five years ago and drew the attention of former Grizzlies president Tim Mouser in a hockey game last spring. Pehrson has a scoring touch, albeit in adult recreation league games, but he is also 6-5 and 240-pounds. "My size is a definite plus. I wouldn't have this opportunity if I was smaller," said Pehrson, who attended Valley Crest Elementary across the street from the Acord Ice Center. He said his first day of training camp was pretty much what he expected. His biggest kick came from answering inquiries into his hockey past. "They asked where I played last year and I said 'Nowhere.' They asked where I lived and I said 'Up the road.' " Because he has never played in a professional, let alone a junior hockey or college game, Pehrson is a little nervous about getting physical, but he is not about to let it stop him from his chance to crack a pro roster. "I have to do what I have to do," he said. Infamous Grizzly Utah winger Brett Draney is getting some unexpected and late attention for an incident that happened last week at the Dallas Stars' camp in Breckenridge, Colo. Apparently angry at Draney for a check, new Dallas superstar Bill Guerin swung his stick like a tomahawk, hitting the young player on the shoulder near his neck. Draney turned to face his foe and they had to be separated. Guerin later apologized and the incident was forgotten. But a camera crew from Canada was there and caught the ugly episode on tape. While it has been playing on TSN, Canada's version of ESPN, since Sept. 15, it only made it to U.S. television Wednesday. Draney was surprised to hear that some had called for Guerin to be suspended for slashing his own teammate and that it was being brought up again. "It shocked me when it happened, but it wasn't that bad. He got me right on the top of the shoulder pad. My neck was a little sore the next day, but it was nothing serious," Draney said. "He apologized and I hung out with him after that. I haven't even thought of it since it happened." Briefly Dallas assigned forwards David Gosselin, Barrett Heisten, Jim Montgomery and Gavin Morgan and defenseman Dan Jancevski to Utah on Wednesday. Hay said players assigned by Dallas and Montreal will not play in the scrimmage games Friday and Saturday at the Acord. Father Dan has had the same job with the Jazz for 32 years. (Leah Hogsten/The Salt Lake Tribune) BY BRETT PRETTYMAN THE SALT LAKE TRIBUNE "Bring 'em on out, how about these Grizzlies?" Don't worry, the new public address announcer for the Utah Grizzlies hockey team promises not to use the trademark call of the Utah Jazz, even if it was created by a family member. After listening to his father bellow out that cry at Jazz home games for the last 22 years, Jeremy Roberts will get his own microphone and opportunity to produce his own catch phrase Friday when the Grizzlies open the home portion of the 2002-03 AHL schedule against the San Antonio Rampage. "I'm his biggest fan. I brag about my dad all the time. Everybody has heard him," Jeremy Roberts said of his father Dan, whose voice has been echoing throughout the Delta Center, Salt Palace and the Special Events Center for the last 32 years. "It flatters me when people say I sound like my dad, but I want to have my own style." Like all sons who follow the career paths of their fathers, Jeremy Roberts does not want people to think he rode his father's coattails to land his current job. Like all fathers whose sons decide to pursue a parent's footsteps, Dan Roberts could not be more proud of his son. "Jeremy would come and listen to his pops basically make a fool of himself," Dan Roberts said. "I had no idea he wanted to follow in my footsteps. It never occurred to me, but he did it." As a child, Jeremy Roberts proudly told people his father was a "pronouncer." Without any encouragement, 8-year-old Emma has started introducing her father the same way. Jeremy Roberts began his announcing career as a 16-year-old by working his sister's hunter and jumper horse shows. The next step was covering baseball games at Hillcrest High School. He couldn't handle announcing the Hillcrest hockey games because Jeremy Roberts was too busy leading the team in scoring. "Our team scored 84 goals one season and I had 70 of them," he said. "I wasn't the best skater, I just tried to think ahead of the play." That is a trait that will help Jeremy Roberts as he takes his seat next to the glass at center ice 40 times this season. It is also one of the reasons he was was picked ahead of 29 other would-be Grizzlies announcers. "That hockey knowledge really put him over the top," said Sarah Price, in charge of game-day operations for the Grizzlies. "We felt like he wouldn't really need a lot of teaching. Of course, he also has a great voice that just fills the arena." Jeremy Roberts honed his announcing skills working for the Rocky Mountain Revue and then providing play-by-play for the Salt Lake Community College basketball team. "I went with him up to Rexburg for a game to kind of give him support and fill any dead air that might have come up," Dan Roberts said. "He was pretty dang good. Play-by-play is something I always wanted to do and I'm proud of him." David Allred is not surprised by Jeremy Robert's drive to sit behind a microphone. Allred has been with the basketball team from the beginning in 1980. He sat next to Dan Roberts for years and watched as a starry-eyed Jeremy Roberts studied his father. "Jeremy always had, and continues to show, a lot of admiration for what his dad does and the role he plays in the Jazz organization," said Allred, vice president of public relations for the NBA team. "Jeremy and I always used to try to lower our voices and talk the way Dan does. He is pretty close to his dad [voicewise]." Basketball fans first heard Dan Roberts at the Salt Palace announcing ABA Utah Stars games. He then went to University of Utah to handle games at the Special Events Center. While working at the university, Roberts' voice also carried fans through the NCAA finals, featuring Larry Bird and Magic Johnson. Dan Roberts has plenty of advice for his son, but is reluctant to share it all with him because, he says, it is important to learn most of it on his own. But he did encourage Jeremy to lay off the hyper stuff. "It has a taken a lot of time to find a way to become part of the background ambiance of the Delta Center. I just try to be part of the atmosphere and to keep it that way," Dan Roberts said. "Some guys get so carried away they are screaming and trying to sound different. I did a little of that in the beginning, but I sounded so stupid, I gave it up. It is OK to use a little humor now and then, but you can't get carried away." Although most people don't know his name, Dan Roberts is a vital part of the Jazz identity, Allred said. "Dan is like Larry Miller, Hot Rod Hundley and Jerry Sloan. He has been a consistent part of our organization through all of these years," Allred said. "Every fan who has been to a Jazz game knows his voice and would recognize it as the voice of the Jazz." If anyone understands the dedication it takes to be a PA announcer for a professional team, it is the son of one. "I've watched how much time my dad spends working before a game studying pronunciation sheets. He truly cares what the fans and the players think of him," Jeremy Roberts said. "To be mentioned in the same breath as him is completely flattering. It is also kind of surreal for me. I have always been Dan Roberts' son. Now, I feel like I have stepped up another level and I've done it on my own." But he will always remain the son of the man who coined the phrase Jazz fans hear in their sleep. "If you know Dan's voice, then you can hear him in Jeremy," Price said. "There is no doubt where his voice came from." bpretty@sltrib.com [ To quit the utah-grizzlies mailing list, send to majordomo@xmission.com ] [ the command "unsubscribe utah-grizzlies" (don't include the quotes) ] ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 15 Oct 2002 10:40:53 -0600 From: "Bob Hoffman" Subject: [UG] Bateman Re-Called by Grizzlies (Oct. 15, 2002) GRIZZLIES RE-CALL BATEMAN FROM LEXINGTON=20 WEST VALLEY CITY, UTAH - The Utah Grizzlies re-called forward Jeff Bateman = from the Lexington Men-O-War, Utah's East Coast Hockey League affiliate.
