Please see http://members.aol.com/FranzGall/yello.htm for a b/w scan of the leaflet. First impression: terrific, gorgeous. Plenty of new sounds, no techno speed. Some the songs remind me to intros of SF space operas. Also Jean-Michel Jarre says hello. Choruses, strange rhythms, even songs with no rhythms. I am very happy, this sounds much more better than the single release. I just thought I'd give some facts on the new album, which was released today in Europe. Title: Pocket Universe Release date: 24 Feb 1997 Cat no: Mercury, 534 353-2 Tracks: 1. Solar Driftwood 1.51 2. Celsius 5.59 3. More 6.39 4. On Track 5.33 5. Monolith 6.21 6. To the Sea 5.46 [longer than single version] 7. Magnetic 5.53 8. Liquid Mountain 2.58 9. Pan Blue 5.31 10. Resistors 7.13 11. Beyond Mirrors 5.49 12. To the Sea 3.52 (radio version/northern mix) [remixed by Steve B-Zet] Track 12 is not mentioned on the cover or in the booklet, it was obviously a last-minute decision to include it. There's a tiny sticker on the cover "incl. bonus track to the sea remix by Steve B-Zet". There are no guest players on this album (Chico Hablas, Beat Ash etc), and no space between songs. One thing I noticed was the absence of the usual amount of humour, surprise and craziness that at least I expect. This is an album that has a lot of seriousness about it, at least compared to their earlier albums. No sudden "real" drum solos, or "real" guitar solos. It's cooler and darker. (My favourite is Celsius!!!!!) If you liked Zebra, you will probably like this one too. If you expect another 'Baby' or earlier - forget it. I guess those days are over... In the last years he often lost hope to bring the project to an end; so he put pressure to himself: He's now on a post-production-situation, which is so expensive that now, it's existential to complete the movie... Now he doesn't work alone anymore but with "Hollywood"; i.e. he want that "Lightmaker" (is NOT the final title) should have commercial chances. Dieters problem is, that he lost himself in 160km (!) of celluloid; structure of the story is clear for a long time - it's about classic Orpheus-subject. Story: A musician from N.Y. is seduced by his love to the underworld where she had been kidnapped. This world is placed in a mountain where a forgotten kingdom is vegetating around. To have new life they need the musician, because only he is capable to open the centre - a big crystal - and to enlighten the empire of darkness. The musician has been deceived with fair words that the only way to find again his love is to make music, i.e. to illuminate the underworld. He starts playing but the evil powers have their own interests; they need the music to survive... (Story will have a happy-end!) It looks like Boris is decreasing the quality because there are lousy mixers coproducing songs on the album. I have Carl Cox's album and it basically is lousy, both artistically and technically -- it is mastered to contain much bass frequencies, never heard such mastering before. Nice samplelibrary, I bet. From earlier interviews there are 20000-30000 sounds. I wonder how many samples there are here in the network. Quite much. There are many synth sounds and I'm sure there are many samples of the old analog synths. Unfortunately my network connection is a floppy disk connection with respect to downloading. Hi! Maybe some of you are unaware of why Pocket Universe isn't released in the US/UK yet. I'll tell you why: because the record companies in question have other things to do right now. They have other artists that need promotion first - they don't want their own releases to compete with each other. It's that simple. In short: money. That's what's it all about. Did someone mentioned the word "music" here? Or "art"? No, no, no, then you have a lot to learn about the music business. Because that's what it is: bu$ine$$..... Do I sound cynical? Well, maybe, but not compared to most record companies... No wonder some artists (*many* artists) get fed up with it, and start to release their own records via Internet. Like Prince. He will soon release a 3-CD with "previously bootlegged material" - ONLY via Internet. And that's how it's gonna be in the future. You order your music directly from the artist. Maybe with Yello too. Probably you'll be able to buy rare stuff in this way. The future will tell.
