At closing time, as everyone came out, he spotted his potential quarry. The man was so obviously inebriated that he could barely walk. He stumbled around the parking lot for a few minutes, looking for his car. After trying his keys on five others, he finally found his own vehicle. He sat in the car a good ten minutes, as the other patrons left. He turned his lights on, then off, wipers on, then off. He started to pull forward into the grass, then stopped. Finally when he was the last car, he pulled out onto the road and started to drive away. The Patrolman, waiting for this, turned on his lights and pulled the man over. He administered the breathalyzer test, and to his great surprise, the man blew a 0.00! The Patrolman was dumbfounded! "This equipment must be broken!" exclaimed the Patrolman. Naturally I will only comment on Yello's Motion Picture, because after all this is the Yello mailing list. Well, very briefly let me express that I'm quite satisfied with this new album. Here's my story of woe to finding Motion Picture: I first noticed that MP was listed on Amazon.com for the outrageous price of $29.95 plus shipping and handling, wanting the disk very badly I decided to go ahead and order it. It was immediately backordered. Ok I thought most Amazon backorders are only a few days. Days turned into weeks, nothing. Then in this very group I saw someone say CD Universe has MP, so I go to CD Universe and yes they do have it, and it says "In Stock" it was also about $5.00 cheaper, great I thought as I ordered it. Then returned to Amazon and cancel my previous order. When I get my confirmation my heart sank as I saw those dreaded words ON BACKORDER. Again a few days turned into a couple of weeks, as I was cruzing on CDNow to my surprise they now list MP (this was a surprise because CDNow have not carried the past couple of releases). Again I check availability and they list In Stock. So once again I order MP and go to CD Universe and cancel my order. Sure enough patient reader CDNow also backordered the disk but within two days I got a confirmation on shipment. So after three tries I finally get MP. My thoughts on it? It's a good album, equal to but not better than PU, in fact I really think I like PU a little better (with the exception of the dreadful To The Sea). But now I was in CD Now this morning and saw they are now listing Squeeze Please, of course I ordered it and of course it's backordered. So after all this and carefully listening to the album several times a question to the group, and an observation. Question; Which comes first the music or the lyrics? Observation: This is going to rub some people the wrong way, and if so I apologise in advance, it would appear to me that Dieter is writing the lyrics before Boris is writing the music. This would IMHO explain the blandness of the last couple of albums. Dieter appears to be stuck in his mini-movie mode, Boris is doing the best he can with what little Dieter is offering. I'll state this after reading the song notes in the CD booklet. Dieter has been doing basically the same thing since Flag. I believe Dieter should sit down and write a novel and really flush out his thoughts, or perhaps a screenplay, something and clear this current line of thought out of his mind. Boris is obviously ready to move on to more challenging music. I dearly love Yello and have been a devoted fan for more than 20 years, however it seems that Yello has gone lower and lower on Dieters priority list. MP sounds like parts of the last 5 Yello albums all rolled into one. It sounds like he spent maybe a day working on these lyrics. Anyway I'm looking forward to hearing your thoughts! My reply: I remember reading an article many years ago where Dieter states that generally, he meets with Boris, listens to the music he's been working on, and if he sees a movie in his head, he'll write lyrics for that movie. The songs that don't 'inspire' a cerebral cinematic event wind up as the instrumentals. I think this does explain how many of their lyrical elements carry over album to album. Deiter and Boris have a wonderful way of working together, and if it's a formula, my own opinion is that they shouldn't change it. I do agree with you that Dieter should write a novel. That would be very cool! # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info yello" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email yello@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. # Yello discography available at http://www.swcp.com/lazlo-bin/discogs?yello ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: FGriego@aol.com Subject: Re: (yello) Motion Picture/Squeeze Please Date: 29 Dec 1999 19:14:29 EST There seems to be a thought process in place that lends itself to sameness or at least similarities. He must pigeon-hole thoughts that he feels are lyric worthy and pull out his notebook whenever summoned by Boris. This would dull the spontaneity that was apparent in earlier efforts. I think I read of Dieter, "taking a typewriter into the studio & writing the lyrics as he heard the music." An optimist (smelling a bed bug), "This bed bug smells like cognac!" I wish you to stay such optimists forever in spite of any differences! I found a copy of the "Live at the Roxy" CDS last night. I must warn you= , it is a bit scratched, and the cover has been bent (as if a previous owne= r shoved it into a normal jewel-box). Aside from that, it is fine, and not easy to find these days. Rather than trying to sell it on EBay, I'd like to trade for some Yello items I may not have. I can think of: the 7" or 12" with "I.T. Splash" "Squeeze Please" CDS "On Track" DJ-pack (this is probably not an even trade; let's work something out) other oddities that may be of interest Lastly, I found _Motion Picture_ as well locally (Chicago) after all this time. However I got home too late to be able to listen yet. Thank you, and good evening, and Gl=FCckliches Neues Jahr! --Mark # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info yello" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email yello@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. # Yello discography available at http://www.swcp.com/lazlo-bin/discogs?yello ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Mark Pulley Subject: Re: (yello) Motion Picture/Squeeze Please Date: 31 Dec 1999 23:20:46 +1100 >>I remember reading an article many years ago where Dieter states >>that generally, he meets with Boris, listens to the music he's been >>working on, > >Sometimes music follows the lyrics quite well. If I recall, Dieter first came up with the drum rhythm heard in the opening, and the music came after that. I'll have to see if I still have the article somewhere.
